stream Red Baraat’s new LP ft. Heems, John Hodgman & more

Red Baraat at BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival
Red Baraat with Heems in Prospect Park in 2016 (more by David Andrako)

Brooklyn Bhangra ensemble Red Baraat are following 2017’s Bhangra Pirates with a new album, Sound The People, this Friday (6/29) via Rhyme & Reason (pre-order). The band’s own Sunny Jain co-produced the album with Run the Jewels collaborator Little Shalimar, and the title track features Queens rapper Heems (who they’ve collaborated with before). The album also features comedian John Hodgman on “Punjaub March,” Pakistanki singer Ali Sethi (who is one half of Resident Alien with Sunny Jain) on “Kala Mukhra” (a rework of the traditional “Gora Mukra”), and poet/activist Suheir Hammad on “Vibrations.” In addition to their usual Bhangra style and bits of hip hop (see: Heems’ guest verses), Sound The People sees Red Baraat bringing in Trinidadian Chutney music, jazz, psychedelia, and more. Here’s more via Sunny Jain:

“It’s hard to escape saying something about the time we’re living in,” says Jain, who began writing the album just weeks after Trump’s victory. “So in a sense, the record is a call to action against the various inequalities and injustices that we’re seeing. We desperately need citizen engagement in response to those injustices.”

Ahead of its release, a full stream of the album premieres below.
