Sandro Perri In Another Life

stream Sandro Perri's gorgeous new album 'In Another Life' (ft. Dan Bejar)

Toronto pop experimentalist Sandro Perri has been making music for nearly 20 years, first as Polmo Polpo and then under his own name from 2006 onwards — and he’s also been a member of Dot Wiggin, Glissandro 70, Continuous Dick, and a handful of other projects. His latest album is the recently released solo LP In Another Life, which is his first solo album in seven years and follows the great Impossible Spaces. Sandro has gotten a handful of comparisons to Arthur Russell (who he was on a tribute album to in 2012), and that comparison comes across very strongly on the uniquely structured minimalist pop of In Another Life, which Sandro calls “an experiment in ‘infinite’ songwriting.” The album is broken up into two halves. The first half is the nearly-25-minute title track, and the second half is the three-part song cycle “Everybody’s Paris,” which has lead vocals and lyrics from Sandro himself on part one, André Ethier of The Deadly Snakes on part two, and Dan Bejar of Destroyer on part three. Sandro says the song cycle was “designed to accept any lyrical variation fed into it: a fill-in-the-blanks questionnaire in the form of a song.” It’s a gorgeous album that doesn’t sound like a lot of other music — especially not like much other music coming out at the moment — and if you haven’t heard it, it’s worth changing that. You can stream the whole LP below and pick up a copy from Constellation Records.

Sandro’s got a handful of October and November shows coming up — all in Canada — including a couple with both Destroyer (solo) and André Ethier on the bill. Hopefully we can expect some collaboration at those. All dates are listed below.
