stream Yamantaka // Sonic Titan's new album 'Dirt'

The unique and highly theatrical Canadian collective Yamantaka // Sonic Titan are releasing their new album Dirt this Friday (3/23) via Paper Bag (pre-order), and we’re premiering a full stream of the album ahead of the release. As we’ve come to expect from YT // ST, Dirt is an ambitious, genre-defying mix of pop, prog, indie rock, noise, metal, folk, choral music, and more, and it all blends together seamlessly. The album is soft and delicate at times, and crushingly heavy at others. It’s a wild ride, and it’s really not the kind of thing you hear every day. Here’s what the band tells us about it:

Dirt is the death knell of the human race. Greed, hubris, apathy and ignorance have brought us to the end. The story is basically about a gamble that ends in futility.

We wanted Dirt to reflect the kind of violence and rage – against the world, against ourselves – that is destroying us. The album incorporates all these influences that have shaped our identities into something that captures the complexity of our experience.

If there’s a sense of urgency it’s because there’s a feeling that we’re reaching a critical tipping point. The haudenosaunee creation myth, the genre melting, the narrative of Aentsik striving to save a flooded world, these are all critical tools we’re using to say, ‘There is injustice, we are suffering, and we’re running out of time to do anything about it.

Having just played a few SXSW shows (including the Pop Montreal showcase at Swan Dive right after Lido Pimienta), the band are currently on a North american tour that lands in Brooklyn the day after the album comes out at Baby’s All Right (3/24). That show is with Weeping Icon and tina-hanaé. Tickets are still available. Updated dates are listed below.
