Sum 41

Sum 41 playing ‘Does This Look Infected?’ on tour and admit it, you’re excited

Sum 41 have released some pretty horrible music in the past decade, and actually there’s a pretty good chance that you think they’ve only ever released horrible music. But if you came of age in the early 2000s and were impacted by the pop punk boom of that era, there’s also a pretty good chance that you know every single word to every single song on their 2001 breakthrough All Killer No Filler and the superior 2002 followup Does This Look Infected?. They’re playing the latter in full on tour this year for its 15th anniversary, which is pretty amazing news for millennials who want to relive their preteen years (or anyone else who might care about this album). It’s got the band’s best song, “The Hell Song,” it’s got the “Master of Puppets”-inspired “Still Waiting” which probably helped introduce a bunch of kids to Metallica, it’s got the thrashy hardcore of “A.N.I.C.” and “Mr. Amsterdam” which probably helped introduce a bunch of kids to thrashy hardcore, and tons of sugary, earworm deep cuts that helped define the TRL pop punk era (with just a bit more aggression than most of Sum 41’s peers). Also, Dave “Brownsound” Baksh’s leads and solos on Does This Look Infected? are the real deal and he rejoined the band in 2015 so that’s good news too. (Early ’00s pop punk has been called punk’s hair metal era, and just like hair metal bands had killer lead guitarists, Sum 41 did too.)

The tour hits NYC’s Terminal 5 on May 12. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (2/16) at 10 AM with AmEx and VIP presales starting Wednesday (2/14) at 10 AM.
