We were just talking about the new Dog Party album, and while we were looking at recent Asian Man releases, we noticed the new compilation from Richmond, VA’s Sundials, Always Whatever, also just came out this month. It collects “songs from 7″s and other totally unreleased material,” and the whole thing can be streamed over at Punk News.

On that compilation and other recent material like the 2012 LP, When I Couldn’t Breathe, Sundials make the kind of raw, honest pop punk we’ve also been getting lately from their labelmates Joyce Manor or Cheap Girls. Their sound owes a lot to the melodic punk/emo bands of the late ’90s, but Sundials are also very much an indie/DIY band, and it makes sense that they’ve shared bills with groups like Speedy Ortiz and Shellshag. And when they boast hugely catchy choruses with lines like “Oh, but you’re way too pretty and I’m a fucking total wreck,” it’s an excellent reminder that sometimes nothing goes together like feelings and power chords.

Sundials only have a few upcoming shows scheduled at the moment, including a hometown show this Thursday (8/22); hometown festival Fall Line Fest in September with Hop Along, Pity Sex, Dads, Inter Arma, Cold Cave, Woe, Big Freedia, Neon Indian (DJ), and more (tickets); and Gainesville’s The Fest in October/November with Circle Takes the Squre, Titus Andronicus, Torche, White Lung, Ceremony, The Menzingers, Lemuria and more (tickets).
