Super Snake

Super Snake (Jerry of Trophy Scars) releasing debut LP (stream "Big Seize")

Morristown, NJ’s Trophy Scars started out as a challenging post-hardcore band, ended up as a bluesy psychedelic rock band, and touched on plenty of interesting and unpredictable sounds in between. They took a break after their 2015 shows (they’re not broken up though), and singer Jerry Jones is now focusing solely on his band Super Snake, which formed back in 2012 and have a couple EPs out. They’re set to release their debut album, Leap of Love, on Valentine’s Day (2/14). They recorded it with Kevin Antreassian, who previously worked with Trophy Scars and recently joined The Dillinger Escape Plan as a guitarist (and plays on their 2016 album Dissociation).

We’re premiering the album’s lead single “Big Seize,” which is a heavy dose of doomy psych, complete with wah solos and the Tom Waits-esque growl that Jerry Jones adopted with late-period Trophy Scars. It’s a hell of a track, and you can check it out below. Jerry talked to us a bit about the new song, and also the state of Trophy Scars and the different goals of that band and this one:

This album took almost three years to make. This song was the reason it got made. I’ve been playing music for 15-years between Trophy Scars and Super Snake. I have been a part some pretty wild things; the album “Leap of Love” happens to be the craziest and “Big Seize” is a wonderful introduction to it.

Trophy Scars is not an entity that is ending, it’s just not active at the moment. I think there is still a bright future ahead of TS, albeit a less “lively” one, and that’s all i can really say about that at the moment. Super Snake is my main creative focus right now and is very different from TS. Instead of the dramatic blues-oriented psychedelia found on TS’s last few outputs, this is more of a blistering whirlwind of heavy psychedelia. Where TS was jamming Hendrix, Floyd, Waits, and Clapton – SS was jamming Sabbath, Butthole Surfers, Swans, and Slowdive.

Super Snake are playing a release show for the new album on February 3 at Mexicali Live in Teaneck, NJ with Will Wood & The Tapeworms, Don’t Upset The Bear, Trü and Trü. Tickets are on sale now.
