Superchunk & Aparna Nancherla joined Yo La Tengo for Hanukkah night 5 (setlist, video)
For indie rock fans, the fifth night (12/16) of Yo La Tengo‘s Hanukkah celebration at Bowery Ballroom may have been the best, biggest yet. Superchunk, whose new album What A Time to Be Alive is out in February and who would sell out Bowery on their own, were the surprise openers. Next up was comedian Aparna Nancherla, who you may know from Bojack Horseman, Crashing, The Big Sick, or her weekly NYC comedy show Butterboy, performed an AV-oriented set.
Mac from Superchunk joined Yo La Tengo for their whole set, as did percussionist Amy Garapic on vibraphone and drums. Mac took lead vocals on a cover of Maxine Brown’s “Oh No Not My Baby.” The special guest for the encore was Marky Ramone…which was actually Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster in a leather jacket and a wig. He joined them on drums for Ramones songs “I Can’t Make it On Time” and “Sheena is a Punk Rocker.”
Antietam made the night’s mix CD and proceeds from Saturday benefited ACLU NY. Check out pictures from Saturday’s show in the gallery above, and the setlist (via Jesse Jarnow) and Instagram pics and video below.
Night 5 of Yo La Tengo's 8 nights of Hanukkah run was even better than last night! The ever amazing Superchunk started off the evening, followed by the hilarious Aparna Nancherla. Mac from Superchunk and Amy Garapic sat in with YLT. Faux Marky Ramone (aka Jon Wurster) was the surprise encore guest and played drums for 2 Ramones songs. Looking forward to the last night on Tuesday!
