Surfbort go to the beach in “Trashworld” video (watch), on tour now

Brooklyn punks Surfbort are getting ready to release new album Friendship Music which they made with Eaters’ Jonathan Schenke (who’s worked on records by Parquet Courts, Bodega and others) and Chad Ubovich of Meatbodies. It’s out October 26 via Cult Records / Fat Possum, and the new single from the record is “Trashworld” which singer Dani Miller told us about.

Trashworld started as a discussion about what people should care about more…Gender identity? Racism? Sexism? The environment? It’s frustrating to come across people who stand for one thing but don’t acknowledge another… like a xenophobe who cares about the environment. People are mobilized into struggle by what directly affects them but it’s important to have equal concern for other’s oppressions. That said, we’re all trashing the planet with our need for comfort and convenience…so the video shows burners and clueless punks partying at the end of the world. Trashworld is our anthem for moving forward with love and compassion for each other in order to plant flowers in the trash piles we’ve created on mother earth.

We’re premiering the video for “Trashworld” which was made by rising filmmaker Kansas Bowling, who directed that Death Valley Girls video with Iggy Pop, and has made memorable clips for Collapsing Scenery. The video stars Troma horror icon Tiffany Shepis and Bowling says, “the concept for the ‘Trashworld’ video was to make a 2 minute Muscle Beach Party meets Street Trash exploitation films.” Dani, meanwhile, says the shoot was no day at the beach. “The ‘Trashworld’ shoot was hell: 120 degrees, no shelter, the roll of film with our death scenes melted. We basically put ourselves in end of the world conditions in Bombay beach. There was nothing fake, convenient, or comfortable about the filming of this toxic beach party. Convenience is killing the planet.” It turned out pretty cool, though, and you can watch it below.

Surfbort are currently on tour with The Growlers and will soon be opening on the Iceage/Black Lips tour, and will head to Australia for this year’s Gizzfest. They’ll also play a free Friendship Music release show at Brooklyn’s Baby’s All Right on October 27 with Promiseland, Ruby TM, and Fascinator (RSVP) and will be at Gonerfest too.
