Rob Fish of Ressurection, playing Cake Shop in 108 (more by BBG)
108

Ressurection walked the line between metal, noise, and hardcore in the 90s, carving out a distinct path before succumbing to the success of vocalist Rob Fish's (then) new project 108. The band's catalog has been given a once over by the venerable Kurt Ballou for the previously discussed I Am Not: The Discography and the results are astonishing. Stream "Culture" below and "Build" at Deathwish who breathe new life (get it?) into the I Refuse material that first surfaced via New Age Records. Deathwish says "A release date and Pre-ordering information will be announced shortly."

Resurrection is scheduled to play This is Hardcore on August 13th in Philadelphia, but have also added a Brooklyn show at Saint Vitus on 8/14. Details are sketchy at best so far, but lets hope it isn't a 21+ show. UPDATE: maybe the show is actually in New Brunswick instead.

Rob Fish recently played at the East Coast Tsunami as part of 108. Ressurection song and cover art below...

After a triumphant showing at Cake Shop, 108 ripped Death By Audio a new one later that night (1/8) with support from Primitive Weapons, Heavy Breath, and Black Kites. Was Death By Audio 108's last NYC show ever? Only time will tell.

More pictures from Death By Audio are below.

108

A hiatus, a reformation, a break-up, a departure and another reformation all were the prelude to 108's return to the stage on Saturday (1/8). The band played the first of two NYC shows that day (the first of three overall) at Cake Shop. The show took place earlier in the day, and was followed by the ill-fated Forgetters show that eventually led to the the Cake Shop basement being closed down by police (due to capacity concerns).

Cake Shop was predictably packed for 108 too, and the band easily delivered the best set of all the bands on the bill, much like they reportedly did a few hours later at an also-packed Death By Audio. Each show featured different sets and different support: Ensign, Incendiary, and Torchbearer opened Cake Shop, while DBA got Black Kites, Heavy Breath, and Primitive Weapons.

More pictures from the Cake Shop show below...

Unearthly Trance at Union Pool (more)
Unearthly Trance

A few notable updates to some previously announced shows.... Unearthly Trance, who released the incredible V (one of my faves of 2010), has been added to the previously discussed Doomriders/Sweet Cobra riff-a-thon happening February 12th at Union Pool. Tickets are still available.

On the much more imminent tip, Mortals and The Ominous Order of Filthy Mongrels have been added as support to the Toxic Holocaust show at Acheron on 1/12. Mortals recently returned from tours with Mutilation Rites and Wizardry and have a new album out now called Savanager. Stream that below, and pick up a copy via their bandcamp. TOOoFM recently dropped their demo on Chainsaw Safety Records, and are currently writing their first full-length LP.

108 play TWO shows today, Saturday, 1/8. Cake Shop during the day (at 3PM) and Death By Audio at night.

A full list of great shows in the coming weeks and that Mortals stream is below.

Government Warning
Government Warning

Tons of great hardcore and punk shows in the coming months!

Richmond hardcore rippers Government Warning will hit the road for a string of dates with Night Birds in late February, hitting NYC for a pair of shows on Feb 19th. The day of old-school hardcore madness begins at an early show at Cake Shop (5PM) with Perdition and Ex-Humans and continues into the wee hours at a late show (11PM) with 0megas at 538 Johnson, # 201. Full tour dates are below.

As previously mentioned, 108 teams up with Ensign, Incendiary, and Torchbearer at Cake Shop at 3PM on Saturday (1/08, yeah I know). Tickets are still available, but this 21+ show WILL sell out. As a result, 108 has added a second ALL AGES show at Death By Audio with Primitive Weapons, Heavy Breath and Black Kites that will kick off at 9PM. No advance tickets, and $10 gets you in.

And now for all of you who missed them on their first go around, you're in luck. Tear It Up have reunited and will play Europa on March 25th with Last in Line & The Cell Mates.

Since forming out of the ashes of Dead Nation in 2000, Tear It Up has become a mainstay of the American DIY hardcore scene. Their aggressive fast hardcore sound and intense live performance won over legions of fans from the start. Tear It Up toured the US and Europe constantly, and when not on tour still played as many as 4 shows a week anywhere within a days drive of their native New Jersey. Tear It Up survived several line up changes most notably Paul went on to form Cut the Shit and John was drafted from Down in Flames. Tear It Up broke up shortly before [their final record Taking You Down With Me] was released... Let it be known that Tear It Up went out at the top and never put out a weak record or put or a lame half hearted show.
Tickets for the Brooklyn show are on sale.

Most Precious Blood are back, and will play Cake Shop on January 30th with Suburban Scum & Spectators. Advance tickets are available now.

The previously discussed 'Steve Ignorant plays Crass' show at Santos Party House on March 10 has added Leftover Crack and Thulsa Doom to it's ranks. Tickets are still available. Leftover Crack played Music Hall of Williamsburg on the day after Christmas 2010, but not with Bouncing Souls in Asbury Park that same week.

Reverend Horton Heat has a pretty impressive set of tour dates laid out for the first half of the year, and one of thise is scheduled for The Bell House on May 6th. Tickets are on sale. Full tour schedule is below.

Though Stiff Little Fingers still exists as a band, original guitar player Harry Cluney will play Europa to perform "Stiff Little Fingers Classics" on Feb 11th. Tickets are on sale.

Supertouch has reunited, and will play Santos on Feb 12th with Sweet Diesel. The show originally had 1.6 Band on the bill, but they have since been removed. Tickets are on sale.

Reagan Youth will team up with Yuppicide, Beer & Cable, and Agitator to play Europa on January 23rd. Tickets are on sale.

The Brooklyn venue will also host a monsterous hardcore lineup two months later featuring Urban Waste, Ultra Violence, Step 2 Far, Down Low NYHC, Darkside NYC, Kincaid, Fed Up, Caught In A Trap, Chesty Malone & The Slice Em Up's, Not Without A Fight, Sexual Suicide, Olde York, and Yo Scunt. The March 26th show will begin at 1PM and tickets are on sale.

Tour dates and some video below...

Rob Fish OF 108

After a bit of a false alarm, Rob Fish is BACK in 108 and BrooklynVegan and 1000 Knives are proud to present their return with Ensign and Incendiary at Cake Shop on January 8, 2011! Tickets are on sale, and going FAST. The show is part of a short tour that will be announced soon.

The band released the excellent 18.61 earlier this year on Deathwish Records.

Rob Fish now EX-108
108

OK, so 108 ISN'T breaking up...

Eventually, the remainder of the band decided that we desired to keep doing 108 even though Robert did not. We realized that we could try to do the band, but that without Robert we would need to go in a very new and different direction sonically and, to some extent, ideologically as well. Robert's contribution to the band was so vast and touched so many aspects of 108, that we fully realize can not "replace" him. We don't plan to try. Instead, we will do something very different from what we did as a band with him.

Whether you like it or not is up to you.

We will like it. If it turns out that we don't we will end it.

It is still called 108 because it is still about what 108 is all about. If this doesn't make sense to you, I apologize. It makes sense to us. We are already writing new material and are eager to share it with you as soon as we can. In the meantime, we hope you really get into our latest recording: 18.61.

For the full story, check out a statement from guitarist Vic DiCara. 108's new album, 18.61, is on the way via Deathwish.

108

... Aside from the practical side of being in a band with members spread throughout different continents I have found myself struggling to find my place within 108 due to the personal evolution I have gone through. I still find myself, at my core, aligned to the spirit of 108 but I am no longer comfortable with what 108 represents to most people and how that aligns to who I am. Over the years I have tried my best to disregard that aspect of being in 108 but I am tired of answering the questions about it and, more importantly, wrestling with how I address it personally without misrepresenting the rest of the band. We are a band with meaning but not a band defined by a meaning. What does that mean exactly?

... 108 has been a critical part of my life and helped me navigate many personal traumas and crises. Triv and Vic are two of the most honest, sincere and heartfelt people I have ever had the honor of knowing and creating music with. They are two of my best friends and I hope to always have them as a part of my life. We wrote some songs that will always be at the core of my being and for that I am grateful. Many other people played a role in what 108 was and all that we created and to those people I will always be grateful. It is just time. In my heart I hope that in the near future we have the opportunity to play those songs again, at least one last time, and honor what the band and the songs have meant to us. Only time will tell if that happens. If it does great, if not I will have many amazing memories.

Thank you for caring.

With love...
Robert Fish

Read the full statement here. 108 will reportedly make a final live appearance, though details on that remain to be seen. The new album, 18.61 is due on Deathwish soon.

108 at Burning Fight Book Release (photo by Matt Miller)
Rob Fish of 108

New album from a reunited band. Its easy to be skeptical, and before I heard a note of their 2007 reunion LP A New Beat from a Dead Heart, I was. But hardcore greats 108 quickly extinguished the flame of doubt and proved that not only did they still have something to say, they could say it with a fury not dissimilar from their pre-breakup incarnation.

Now 108, the crew will serve up another platter of furious hardcore with their new LP 18.61 laid down "in the analog domain of Alex Garcia Rivera (ex-Give Up The Ghost)" with Kurt Ballou mixing down the proceedings. The record is due on Deathwish and the tracklisting is still to come, but the title track makes it's first appearance here and is downloadable above, along with "Forever Is Destroyed" which recently appeared on the Deathwish Sampler. Stream more at their Deathwish audioplayer, including the supremely discordant/badass "God Talk". The record marks the first appearance of former-and-now-current The Red Chord drummer Mike Justain. (Justain also did time with Trap Them, Unearth, and Backstabbers Inc, among others)

In other news, Rob Fish recently announced his involvement in Eshas a new project featuring Aaron Edge (Iamthethorn, Himsa, etc). "Your Empty Dying Days" (above) is the first song to bubble to the surface with "more to come, whenever the urge hits".

Rob Fish's old project Ressurection will get a deluxe discography treatment via Deathwish. Look for I Am Not: The Discography to appear on the label later this year. Members of Ressurection has gone on to feature members of Lifetime, Deadguy, Floorpunch, The Van Pelt, Paint It Black and many others.

Album art and some live video, including video of 108 performing "18.61" live at Santos last year, is below. For more info on some of the ideas behind 108, check out guitarist Vic Dicara's blog.

Orcustus
Orcustus

Orcustus, a vile and caustic black metal crew that at one point featured Infernus and Tormentor of Gorogoroth, have released their long-time-coming LP via Southern Lord. Try and choke back the vomit while you check out "Asphyxiokenisis" above, and pick up the LP here.

While we're on the BM tip, a misanthrope who released my second favorite record of last year, Leviathan, has dropped a new split entitled Sic luceat lux with Greek black metallers Acherontas. Pick it up at Zyklon-B Productions.

Converge is currently in the studio recording their new album, fingers perched with on twitter. Meanwhile, Nate of Converge dropped some details on the new Doomriders record, Darkness Come Alive, which he professes to be "not as [much of a] party record" and a "little more serious". More in an interview here.

Speaking of Doomriders, Boston's Disappearer (also featuring Jebb Riley) have released The Clearing on Magic Bullet Records in CD and 2LP formats. Pick it up here, and dig on the MP3 for "A Skull Full Of Bats" above!

20 Buck Spin is repressing one of their greatest releases, the Graves At Sea / Asunder split. Pick that up here.

Red Sparowes have announced that they will hit the studio in August to record their LP follow-up to Amorphisms EP. Follow Red Sparowes on Twitter.

UK doomers Moss have a new 10" EP, Tombs Of The Blind Drugged, due this month via Rise Above Records. Preorder info isn't available yet, but when it is, you can pick it up here.

Black Arrows of Filth & Impurity. I know, the name is kind of a mouthful... but the names of the bands that are associated with this death/grind/ambient crew are pretty common around these parts: Demiricous, The Dream Is Dead, and Racebannon. BAOFAI drop their new album 1984 (Eternal) on Gilead Media and are streaming four tracks at their myspace, but have dropped off "Damn, Girlfriend, That Napalm Exfoliates As It Burns" and "If Shit Were Gold, The Poor Wouldn't Have Assholes" above! Pick up 1984 (Eternal) here.

Call me a loyalist, but I had the feeling that after being somewhat disappointed by In The Absence Of Truth, Isis would come back as strong as ever. Make sure and check out Wavering Radiant on May 5th or now, if you are a record fiend or feel like streaming it all at their myspace. Look for Isis at Irving Plaza on June 2nd with Tombs & Pelican (tickets here), and check out the video for "Holy Tears" below!

That video, Subrig Destroyer, Beherit, Velvet Cacoon, sunn 0))), Nattefrost, and more, as This Week in Metal continues!

Yob
yob

The mighty YOB have revealed details on their upcoming new album for Profound Lore! In a blog post entitled "Tracking And Mixing Is Done", the band offered the following update:

The new album has been tracked and mixed. It will be mastered at the end of the month by Billy Barnett at Gung-Ho Studio in Eugene, Oregon. Sanford Parker did such a fantastic job and was so easy to work with. Truly professional and amazing at every turn. We are confident our friends worldwide are going to dig our new vibes channeled through Sanford's engineering wizardry.

The album will be titled The Great Cessation with 5 songs clocking in @ 62 minutes... The tentative release date is late July... The titles: Burning The Altar, The Lie That Is Sin. Silence Of Heaven, Breathing From The Shallows, The Great Cessation

DOOM!

I second Mike Scheidt's last statement.

As we mentioned before, 108 will be in NYC on April 25th, bringing along with them the mighty Pulling Teeth, who just dropped their new album Paranoid Delusions, Paradise Illusions. Tickets are still available, or you can win a FREE pair of tickets and a copy of Pulling Teeth's new CD! Details on how to win are below, before the tour dates.

Black Kites
Black Kites

Black Kites have dropped their new LP, Advancement To Ruins, and it is a manaical chunk of crust-laden hardcore that reminds me of Acme, Cursed, Disembodied, and a ton of other bands that I WISH the hardcore community would look up to. Comprised of ex-members of The Assistant, This Ship Will Sink, You and I, and current members of Zhenia Golov, check out the title track available for download above, and pick up the record at Ride The Fury Records. In the meantime, look for the NJ trio to play June 13th at ABC No Rio, as well as a few other shows around the tri-state. Full tour dates are below.

Pentagram will team up with Nachtmystium for a handful of dates on the west coast and in Blake's native Chicago. Nachtmystium's new EP Doomsday Derelicts drops on May 15th via Battle Kommand/Century Media. Pick it up before one of them gets killed in a drive-by. Pentagram played Webster Hall earlier this year.
