Triptykon

"Very late in the evening of October 5, 2010, Triptykon arrived at John F. Kennedy airport in New York, flying in from London. The very next day, we played the group's first concert on North American soil, at the Gramercy Theatre in Manhattan, thereby embarking on the Weltenbrand co-headlining tour of the US and Canada, together with 1349.

"The Gramercy was filled with long-time friends and new acquaintances alike. Painter/tattoo artist Vincent Castiglia, who is such a major contributor to Triptykon's first album, publisher Ian Christe of Bazillion Points, who gave me the astounding news that my second book Only Death Is Real will already go into its third printing run, the extraordinary Kim Kelly, HR Giger's US agent Les Barany, who photographed and filmed the concert, master sculptor Eli Livingston, the artist behind HR Giger's jewelry and Celtic Frost's pendant, who showed me the prototype of a proposed miniature sculpture based on 1984's The Sitting Death Hellhammer EP cover drawing. There were many more. How good it felt to return to touring in North America, finally, after the past three eventful years." [Tom G Warrior]

Ungh! Gramercy Theater echoed with the trademark Tom Warrior grunt as Triptykon played their first show on US soil in NYC on Wednesday night (10/6). The show, which featured appearances from 1349, Yakuza, and locals Immolith was the first for the Trip/1349/Yakuza package, which will last through the end of the month.

Although Triptykon did play some choice Celtic Frost material (setlist below... "Circle of Tyrants", no "Usurper"!), all three bands are touring in support of their latest recorded output: Triptykon has the new Shatter EP along with the Epistera Daimones full-length. 1349 unleashed Demonoir earlier this year, and Yakuza's Of Seismic Consequence is out now via Profound Lore.

More pictures from the show, including Triptykon's setlist, are below...

Triptykon

Triptykon's set was one of the most highly-anticipated of the entire fest. Would Tom G. be able to pull it off? As the curtains lifted and the first few notes were struck, my fears were immediately laid to rest. Warrior and his three compatriots tore through new material off their debut Eparistera Daimones like men (and woman!) with something to prove, and whipped the hundreds of longhairs in the audience into a headbanging frenzy by dusting off a handful Celtic Frost chestnuts ("Circle of the Tyrants", "Procreation of the Wicked", "Dethroned Emperor", and more), and bringing out Nocturno Culto (Darkthrone) to do some guest vocals. Here's hoping they make it overseas sometime soon! - Kim Kelly at Roadburn
The full tour routing hasn't been announced, but it looks like the US will get paid a visit from the great Tom Warrior and his new project Triptykon along with 1349 and Yakuza! Those dates include Gramercy Theater on October 8th (!!!) and tickets go on Live Nation presale at 10AM on 7/23, with regular sale 24 hours later.

Triptykon, 1349, and Yakuza have all released new LPs in the past year. Triptykon's year-end-list-topping LP Eparistera Daimones and 1349's Demonoir is out NOW via Century Media. Yakuza's Of Seismic Consequence is out now via Profound Lore. All three LPs are fantastic, with Eparistera Daimones in particular being an absolute must hear.

All known dates, as well as a few videos, are below...

The mighty YOB have revealed details on their upcoming new album for Profound Lore! In a blog post entitled "Tracking And Mixing Is Done", the band offered the following update:

The new album has been tracked and mixed. It will be mastered at the end of the month by Billy Barnett at Gung-Ho Studio in Eugene, Oregon. Sanford Parker did such a fantastic job and was so easy to work with. Truly professional and amazing at every turn. We are confident our friends worldwide are going to dig our new vibes channeled through Sanford's engineering wizardry.

The album will be titled The Great Cessation with 5 songs clocking in @ 62 minutes... The tentative release date is late July... The titles: Burning The Altar, The Lie That Is Sin. Silence Of Heaven, Breathing From The Shallows, The Great Cessation

DOOM!

I second Mike Scheidt's last statement.

As we mentioned before, 108 will be in NYC on April 25th, bringing along with them the mighty Pulling Teeth, who just dropped their new album Paranoid Delusions, Paradise Illusions. Tickets are still available, or you can win a FREE pair of tickets and a copy of Pulling Teeth's new CD! Details on how to win are below, before the tour dates.

Black Kites
Black Kites

Black Kites have dropped their new LP, Advancement To Ruins, and it is a manaical chunk of crust-laden hardcore that reminds me of Acme, Cursed, Disembodied, and a ton of other bands that I WISH the hardcore community would look up to. Comprised of ex-members of The Assistant, This Ship Will Sink, You and I, and current members of Zhenia Golov, check out the title track available for download above, and pick up the record at Ride The Fury Records. In the meantime, look for the NJ trio to play June 13th at ABC No Rio, as well as a few other shows around the tri-state. Full tour dates are below.

Pentagram will team up with Nachtmystium for a handful of dates on the west coast and in Blake's native Chicago. Nachtmystium's new EP Doomsday Derelicts drops on May 15th via Battle Kommand/Century Media. Pick it up before one of them gets killed in a drive-by. Pentagram played Webster Hall earlier this year.

"How about this fuckin' lineup man? Whoever put this thing together, I'd like to shake their hand" - CT of Rwake

Boris (Steven Brown)
Boris

I'd like to think it was the jawdropping lineup decreed by the gods upon Mt Scion that brought people out in droves to The Masquerade in Atlanta on February 28th, but I would imagine that some of it was also due to "free show" factor. Either way, there is something ridiculawesome about bands as great as Harvey Milk, Wolves In The Throne Room, and Coalesce having to turn people away due to reaching capacity. That is my idea of sweet metal justice... some of my current favorite bands in front of the audiences they deserve.

The Masquerade is a 2+ level club. The biggest stage, dubbed "Heaven", is located on the second floor and houses somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000 people. Two adjacent clubs on the main level, "Hell" & "Purgatory", house considerably less: "Hell" is primarily a dance floor, so there were some obstructed sightlines. "Purgatory" had multiple tiers, no elevated stage and very little room in front of the band. Behind the venue in a grassy area which was muddy due to the prior night's rain, a 4,000 person capacity tent was constructed for the main stage.

CT & Rwake in Tampa, FL (Nicole Kibert)
CT

Scion Rock Fest in Atlanta is just a few days away (Feb 28th) and until the opening tones of Kylesa's guitars, we'll present a series of discussions with some of the key artists taking one of the four stages at the Masquerade. Yesterday we spoke to Scott Hull of Pig Destroyer and Agoraphobic Nosebleed. Today it's CT...

I'll always remember the first time that I picked up Judge's Bringing It Down and saw..... "Mike Judge: Throat". Damn right. Conversely, Rwake's liner notes in Voices of Omens and If You Walk Before You Crawl, You Crawl Before You Die credit CT with "vocals". I beg to differ.

CT's rusty razorblade of a throat and his band of Arkansan hooligans, Rwake, have been around for more than ten years, trudging in sludge, doom, and wading in the generally unpleasant mucky southern marsh that birthed Eyehategod and Buzzov*en. Rwake dropped their last LP in 2007, the critically acclaimed Voices Of Omens. Since then the band has kept busy on the road, and CT has spent a good portion of his free time at the helm of a documentary examining the southern underground metal scene. It's called Slow Southern Steel.

With Scion Rock Fest right around the corner and Rwake set to hammer the Masquerade stages, We sat down with CT to discuss his band, the movie, and emerging artists on the southern metal scene.

===

Rwake released Voices Of Omens in 2007, since then have you guys been working on any new material? If so, any recording plans? What are they?

Yes, we have a few new songs, but we'll be holding off on playing them for a bit. We want them to be just right. One new song is 11 minutes long and it's called "It Was Beautiful, But Now It's Sour" we have about 3 more in the making that are almost finished. When we get em done, I'm sure we'll be headed right back to Sanford [Parker]'s to lay it all down.

Ocean
Ocean

My favorite of the two Oceans, the one missing a definite article in front of their name (Ocean of Maine), will be the next heavy band to headline Show No Mercy at Public Assembly (Feb 15th). As part of some sort of bizarre doom-off, Ocean will try to out rumble and underpace the mighty Salome, Riff Cannon, and Batillus who are also on board for the (anti-) festivities. Both Ocean (profiled here) and Salome (who we profiled in August) released full-length LPs last year... Pantheon of The Lesser and S/T respectively. Riff Cannon will drop their debut LP in 2009 and Batillus recently made their new self-titled EP available for free download here.

Speaking of Salome, lead vocalist Kat will make her first Agoraphobic Nosebleedappearance on Agorapocalypse, the latest LP from Scott Hull's pummeling grindcore project. Due April 14th, Agorapocalypse won't be the lone AnB in 2009; the band plans a series of splits for this year with a wide array of bands including Despise You, ANS, Agents of Satan and Thrones!

Mayhem, Marduk, Cattle Decapitation, and Cephalic Carnage have added a date together in Seattle Washington @ Studio Seven on June 5th. Pleasegodletitbeafulltour... Pleasegodletitbeafulltour... Cattle Decapitation's The Harvest Floor dropped on Jan 20th.

Brutal Truth recently announced their involvement in the Auditory Assault Festival (with Gadget, Kill The Client, Jig-ai and others), and now comes word that the band will have released their new record before then! Enter Evolution Through Revolution, recorded at Watchman Studios by Doug White (Psyopus) and due on April 14th via Relapse. Stokeage. Brutal Truth drummer Richard Hoak will do double duty at the Auditory Assault festival, also playing with his Total Fucking Destruction project.

Isis announced their new album, Wavering Radiant, due on May 5th via Ipecac Records! Produced by Joe Baressi (Tool, Queens of The Stone Age), look for the wax to hit the streets on Apr. 21. Tool's Adam Jones contributed guitar tracks to a pair of songs on Wavering Radiant.

Sweet do, Jared Big Business!
Big Business

Big Business have announced their new album, Mind The Drift due in April via Hydra Head Records. Produced by Phil Ek (The Shins, Earth, Fleet Foxes, Built To Spill), the record is the first to feature new guitarist Toshi Kasai. Stream the new track "Gold and Final" at their myspace.

Ahhh... NOW I know why 1349 are heading out on tour.... Revelations Of The Black Flame is the name of the recently announced new album by the black metallers! Recorded at StudioStudio Nyhagen in Bøverbru, Norway, 1349 have enlisted Tom Gabriel Fischer to help man the boards! Look for it sometime this spring. Meanwhile, Tom Gabriel Fischer's new venture post-Celtic Frost, Triptykon, is currently in the demo phase. 1349 will be at BB Kings on March 2nd, tickets are available here.

The sickos in Sourvein have scheduled a few new dates, including an NYC date that looks to be part of an upcoming US tour. No details just yet, but set aside April 19th until then. Tour dates below.

The previously announced Converge show at Europa on March 27th (tickets here) just got a little bit nuttier with the addition of Genghis Tron, Ceremony, Rise and Fall, and Pulling Teeth.

Lair Of The Minotaur's new DVD, WAR METAL BATTLE MASTER is out NOW at Southern Lord. Meanwhile, bassist Nate Olp (Demiricous) has been sent in to replace the departed DJ Barraca for live gigs. DJ recently left LOTM to joined Harpoon, who's new record, Double Gnarly / Triple Suicide is due on Feb 10th via Interloper Records.

WITTR

Happy New Year and Welcome Back to The Week In Metal! We took some time away, but believe me, the hate only grew STRONGER.

Wolves In The Throne Room have emerged from the dark forests of the Pacific Northwest to announce a pair of new releases and drop more details on their previously announced upcoming live LP, Live At Roadburn 08! First up, the Malevolent Grain EP will hit Southern Lord with a 180-gram LP bang, with Conspiracy Records dropping a small pressing of picture discs for the record (a limited batch of CDs will be available on tour). Full WITTR tour dates are below, including their date at Scion Rock Fest.

Obscura, an astonishing tech-death band from Deutchland that may or may not be named after the classic Gorguts LP, are streaming a trio of new tracks from massive and recommended upcoming LP Cosmogenesis. Relapse has been kind enough to allow one of those tracks to be made available here for download... check out "Universe Momentum" available above! Cosmogenesis impacts on Feb 17th.

Tombs is pulling double duty on Feb 21st, having scheduled a day show at ABC No Rio with Black Anvil, Woe, and Bastard Sapling and a Winter Hours Record Release show with Defeatist, Engineer, and The Wayward later that night at Death By Audio. Winter Hours is due on Feb 17th via Relapse.

YOB have announced that they will hit the studio in late March with Sanford Parker to record their new album of "5 songs hitting about the 60+ minute mark". Look for it to surface in late summer 2009. In the meantime, Northwesterners can catch the band at their first reunion gig on 2/28 at The Ash Street Saloon in Portland, Oregon.

Shrinebuilder
Shrinebuilder

Shrinebuilder is in progress! The band blogged through the weekend as they completed recording of their debut album for Neurot.

The previously announced Down/Weedeater/Evil Army tour has been postponed.

With a tagline like "2 stages + 2 days = Total Brutality", you better f'n deliver. That said, The LA Murder Fest will turn those sunny California skies black on May 9th & 10th when Coffins, Landmine Marathon, Ghoul, Stormcrow, Agenda of Swine, and Lack of Interest hit the stages of The Knitting Factory in Hollywood! Also on the bill are sickening sludgemeisters -16-, who's new record Bridges To Burn drops on Jan 20th. Check out "So Broken Down" available for download above from the record and to all y'all left coasters, support the band when they hit the road with Giant Squid! Tour schedule is below.
General Surgery will also report for duty at the LA Murderfest, and recently announced the release of their split with Butcher ABC. Look for it on CD via Obliteration Records on January 11 (email grindrock@hotmail.com for a copy) and limited-to-1,000 LP in February via Living Dead Society/Coperaction Records (email unsane_crisis@hotmail.com for a copy). The band will also hit the road with Ghoul following the Murderfest and leading up to Maryland Death Fest (thx SMNNews). Full tour dates are below.

Malkuth, an absolutely killer black metal band featuring members of No Neck Blues Band, have scheduled a show on 1/25 at Public Assembly with Villians, Castevet, and Ipsissimus. Malkuth recently released Mutus Liber out on Hospital Productions and are prepping their second LP for the label.

Converge have scheduled a show at Europa on March 27th! Tickets are on sale. Converge has been added to the Scion Rock Festival in Atlanta... yet one more reason to go! (Thanks Chris!)

Also recently added at Europa, Young Widows will team up with The Austerity Program, My Disco, and Tournament for a show on April 1st! Ticket info is forthcoming, full Young Widows tour dates below. Tournament is lined up to play with Kylesa, Tombs, and Black Anvil at The Charleston.

Satyricon's new record The Age of Nero drops on Jan 13th via KOCH Records, and I have to say that I definitely enjoyed it a hell of alot more than Now, Diabolical. Check out the video for "Black Crow On a Tombstone" below and dig on "The Sign Of The Trident", which the band has made available for download above! Satyricon will hit the road opening for Cradle of Filth at Starland Ballroom on Jan 15th (tix here) and have scheduled an NYC date at Nokia Theater on Feb 27th (tix here).

1349

1349 is a black metal band hailing from Oslo, Norway. The band's music is purposely similar in style and construction to that of bands from the Second Wave of Norwegian black metal of the early 1990s, and does not incorporate synthesisers. As a result, 1349 have been compared to the early incarnations of Enslaved, Emperor, Burzum, Gorgoroth, Darkthrone, Immortal, and Mayhem, being described as much heavier than most other black metal bands. The band has so far, rejected the more commercial style of black metal exhibited by some bands.

The name 1349 comes from the year the Black Death reached Norway. [Wiki]

I saw them at SXSW, at night in a field which was also a VICE party with not many people, but with very drunk people. The band takes the scary act to the next level. The scary faces never leave their faces, so between the scariness on stage and the scariness in the crowd, it was overall kind of scary scary (but very entertaining). Now the band is on tour with Carcass and that brought them from their lair in Norway to the heavily guarded and corporate Nokia Theater in NYC on Saturday night (Sept 6). Black Bubblegum was at the show and his full review is coming soon, but I can tell you now that he was less than impressed with 1349. Ryan also found them hard to take seriously, but did admit they do a good scary (and a good Kiss). More pics below...

Michael Amott & Jeff Walker (Carcass) @ Gods Of Metal, June 28, 2008 (shadowgate)
Carcass

Remember that rumored Carcass show line-up? The one with 1349, Suffocation, Necrophagist, Aborted, AND Rotten Sound? Confirmed, for at least some of the shows anyway (NYC being one of 'em). Let me explain....

The "Exhume To Consume Tour"(Carcass) will intersect with the "Pillage The Village Tour" which sees Necrophagist teaming up with Dying Fetus, Veil Of Maya and Beneath The Massacre. According to the band's individual myspaces and Blabbermouth's reporting on "Pillage" and the Carcass shows, that means that the date at the Palladium in Worcester, MA will get BOTH tours on a single bill and NYC will have Dying Fetus added to the already stupid-ridiculous lineup. So based on those sources, we have the whole thing all Encyclopedia-Brown-ed out for you, down below.

So NYC now gets a mini-festival of sorts..... as we can expect Carcass, 1349, Suffocation, Necrophagist, Aborted, Rotten Sound, AND Dying Fetus. Doors at 11AM (not really).

Dig on the ill flyer (STILL loving that Re-animator theme), and all tour dates, below.....

Tom Warrior, EX-Celtic Frost

Thomas Gabriel Fischer (aka Tom "Warrior"has announced that he is leaving experimental black metal pioneers Celtic Frost, the band he formed with Martin Eric Ain in the wake of Hellhammer's dissolution. From TGF's blog:

I have always seen the Monotheist album as a mere beginning, and a tame one at that......... Celtic Frost had become the unreserved focus of my life for the second time. I was looking forward immeasurably to working on the next Celtic Frost album. To me, it needed to be darker, heavier, and more experimental than "Monotheist".

And yet, Celtic Frost consisted of three individuals, and I was only one of them. In the end I had to concede to myself that there was no other option.

My friendship with and respect for Martin Eric Ain remain unaffected. Moreover, I am in the process of assessing my options to eventually complete, record, and release some of the ideas I originally created for Celtic Frost and the planned next album in the course of the past few years, and to take our distinctive music out on the road again.

There is no way back.

His departure comes as a shock in light of the amazing reception Celtic Frost has received from recent touring and their awesome, critically acclaimed comeback album from 2006, Monotheist.

Even Ted Leo and Dave Grohl are fans! (Fischer can also be found on Grohl's metal side project, Probot.
