The annual post-SXSW Aussie BBQ is happening March 25 at the Bell House in Brooklyn, with a whopping 14 performers throughout the all-day event: Big Scary, Bonfire Nights, Busby Marou, Jonti, Jordie Lane, Oh Mercy, The Jefferson, Teeth & Tongue, Voltaire Twins, Wazu, Luluc, Pets with Pets, Traveller & Fortune, and Saskia Sansom.
With the only determining factor being country of origin, it's a disparate lineup, ranging from gentle folk (Jordie Lane, Luluc, Traveller & Fortune and Saskia Sansom), wide appeal pop (Big Scary, The Jefferson), psych rock (Bonfire Nights, Pets with Pets), synth/glitch/electro (Voltaire Twins, Jonti, Wazu), indiepop (Oh Mercy) and Teeth & Tongue, who is a little like Anna Calvi. Literally something for everyone. Unless all you like is jazz or metal or some other genre not listed above.
At the bottom of this post there's videos and music streams for every artist on the bill. Tickets are $12 -- that's less than a dollar per band. Pretty good deal and a fun way to spend a Sunday.
In addition to playing SXSW and the Aussie BBQ, Big Scary and Teeth & Tongue are going on more extensive North American dates (though not together) and those dates can be found at the bottom of this post. For Big Scary they included gigs at Mercury Lounge and Glasslands.
You can also grab a Big Scary tracks as part of a free mixtape they're giving away on Bandcamp, and as part of a free Family Records SXSW 2012 mixtape. The mixtape also contains songs by Savoir Adore, We Are Augustines and 10 others.
While not part of the BBQ, Australia's Twerps (who made one of my favorite albums of 2012) will be over for SXSW too. After Austin, they're coming to New York for two shows: March 29 at 285 Kent with Ducktails and March 30 at Mercury Lounge with The Mad Scene. After playing here, Twerps hit the road with Real Estate for an extensive North American tour and those dates are at the bottom of this post, along with a new video for album track "Through the Day."
Speaking of Hamish Kilgour (who is in the The Mad Scene), The Clean also just announced dates that bring them to Le Poisson Rouge this year.
Click through for videos and streams by all the Aussie BBQ bands, plus tour dates for Big Scary, Teeth & Tongue, and Twerps.

Pictureplane @ 285 Kent
Class Actress and Pictureplane teamed for a show with Dog Leather and Beige at a sold-out 285 Kent on February 3rd. The show, which was followed by tunes from selectors Neon Indian and Joel Ford, was a one-off East Coast date for both headlining bands. Here are some pictures from the Brooklyn show (though we missed both openers.)
Look for Class Actress on the road and at SXSW this year, and from the looks of his tour dates, possibly Pictureplane in Austin as well. Check out a remix Pictureplane just did for for Black Marble, HERE.

Blouse @ 285 Kent
Captured Tracks took over 285 Kent Tuesday night, featuring three bands from their roster, as well as one that they merely liked a whole lot. I'm not sure if it sold out, but it was a full house by the end of the evening and a pretty fun night all-around.
Last time Blouse were in town, the band were a five-piece with a lead guitarist who really had that early U2/Chameleons sound down, which took the band into more "rock" territory than what you hear on their synth-heavy debut. Last night, Blouse were a quartet with the keyboards back in the forefront. Charline Hilton is charismatic front person who is no slouch, on guitar and the whole band are pretty tight in general. Blouse are best when they break out of the dreamy midtempo sound that makes up so much of their album: the driving "Time Travel" is probably their best song, but it's the cinematic "They Always Fly Away," that really impresses. In 285's airplane hangar acoustics, the song goes widescreen.
Cosmetics probably were the most successful group of the night at least as far as marriage of sound to space. The Montreal duo's icy, desolate beat -- made by vintage synths and sequencers cranked really loud -- sounded great bouncing off the metal ceiling and concrete walls, and fit the overall bombed-out Berlin warehouse vibe of the place. (The duo, all popped collar leather jackets and model-pretty, looked the part too.) From the bathroom they sounded like a munitions factory...in a good way.
Not that successful were The New Lines, the one non-Captured Tracks band on the bill, who haven't quite figured it out live. Their album, one of my 2012 favorites, is chilly baroque pop densely layered with harpsichord and all manner of analogue synths. It would be hard to pull off even under the best of conditions, something 285 Kent doesn't exactly afford, but even harder when you're only three members strong and your very good drummer can't hear the backing tracks. While they don't necessarily need the sonic precision their studio recordings have, a live bassist laying down the record's grooves would help immeasurably towards filling things out sonically. They did, however, have really cool psychedelic projections.
I got to 285 just a hair late to catch opener Heavenly Beat, the solo project of Beach Fossils bassist John Pena whose second single "Faithless" is like a lost 7" from some early-00's Swedish indiepop band. I think both sides are terrific. From what I was told, Heavenly Beat live is currently just Pena onstage with a laptop/ipod backing and not doing a whole lot, so maybe I didn't miss much. He plays this Saturday (2/4) at Cake Shop with fellow C/T band DIVE, plus Caged Animals and Fabric which is a pretty good bill overall.
More pictures from all the bands, including a shot of Blouse's setlist, below.
Pictureplane at PS1 in 2011 (more by Erez Avissar)
ex-Altered Zones publication AdHoc.fm, who presented a NYE show at 285 Kent, are presenting another show there this Friday (2/3) with Class Actress, Pictureplane, and Beige. Tickets for the show are on sale now.
Earlier this month, Pictureplane released a free remix album, Dimensional Rip 7: Thee Physical Remixes with remixes from Grimes, Tearist, Physical Therapy, and others. You can stream and download that whole album below.
Physical Therapy DJs Santos Party House (2/3) the night of the 285 Kent show. Pictureplane was initially going to DJ at that show too, but has since dropped off the lineup, which also includes Andrew W.K., Bad Rabbits, $hayne, Diamond Black Hearted Boy, and Mykki Blanco. Physical Therapy also DJs Blood Orange's now SOLD OUT release show at Glasslands.
Speaking of Beige, they also play the Captured Tracks show at 285 Kent TONIGHT (1/31) with Blouse, Cosmetics, The New Lines, and Mosaics.
Next week Class Actress heads to California for some shows with Superhumanoids who will be going on tour later this year with Active Child. All CA dates are listed below.
Speaking of AdHoc.fm, they're raising money on Kickstarter to launch the new publication.

DOWNLOAD: Dustin Wong - "Here We Come 2012" (MP3)
As mentioned, Akron/Family are currently on a tour with Bad Weather California that brings both bands to NYC on Saturday (1/21) at 285 Kent. Since the Brooklyn show was announced, Dustin Wong (ex-Ponytail) was added to the bill and advanced tickets went on sale. Bad Weather California (more about them below) also play Mercury Lounge with Woodsman while they're in town (1/22).
Dustin Wong is releasing his second LP, Dreams Say, View, Create, Shadow Leads on February 21 via Thrill Jockey. The album art and tracklist is below. He recently posted a song to his soundcloud titled, "Here We Come 2012." It's unclear if this has any ties to the new album but you can stream it below and download it above.
Dustin has also been added as an opener to Hospitality's record release show at Glasslands (2/3). That bill also includes Glass Ghost. Tickets are still available.
Speaking of Akron/Family, member Dana Janssen who creates solo material as Dana Buoy, has been added as an opener to some dates on Youth Lagoon's headlining tour. Dana will open the Bowery Ballroom show on March 27. There is still no opener announced for the MHOW show (3/28). Both NYC shows are sold out (but you can still get tickets to Youth Lagoon's upcoming show with Death Cab). All Dana Buoy dates below.
Akron/Family's tourmates Bad Weather California will be the first band (other than Akron/Family) to release a record on Akron/Family's Family Tree Records, when their album Sunkissed comes out on the label on February 21. The album was produced by Akron/Family member Seth Olinsky. Stream the album track, "You're My Friend," HERE and check out a Brass Tree Sessions video and an album promo video below. The artwork and tracklist are also below. After the Akron/Family tour, BWC have a bunch of dates of their own, including SXSW. Those are all listed below.

DOWNLOAD: Mac DeMarco - "Baby's Wearin Blue Jeans (MP3)
Brooklyn label Captured Tracks is presenting a show at 285 Kent on January 31 with Blouse, Cosmetics, The New Lines, Beige, and Mosaics. More details on this show are below.
Blouse, who we said to check out when they made their NYC debut this past September, released their excellent self-titled debut LP this past November on Captured Tracks (you can buy it on eMusic). The 285 Kent show is Blouse's last North American show before heading out on a European tour in February. All dates are listed below.
In other Captured Tracks news, they launched The Shoegaze Archives in late November, a new series where the label will reissue some of the more obscure releases of the '90s shoegaze era. So far, they've reissued releases by Should, deardarkhead, and Grabbel and The Final Cut. Reissues by Medicine and Half String are on the way. All of these releases are/will be available at the Captured Tracks webstore.
In more Captured Tracks news, last week, they announced their most recent signing; Mac DeMarco, who previously recorded under the moniker Makeout Videotapes. He'll release his debut EP under his own name for the label, Rock and Roll Night Club, on March 20. Mac's guitar has a real '60s garage rock feel to it but he sings with a seductive baritone that recalls '80s new romanticism as much as it does a '50s rockabilly croon. Grab the track, "Baby's Wearin Blue Jeans," from the EP above, and stream two more tracks at bandcamp. You can also stream the track below.

Speaking of The Babies and Real Estate, they're going on an east coast tour together in January. That tour doesn't include any NYC dates yet, but it kicks off the day after Real Estate plays Terminal 5 with Girls and King Krule (1/14). Tickets for that show are still available.

AraabMuzik at Moogfest in October (more by Diana Wong)
When Altered Zones announced last month that they would no longer be operating, editors Ric Leichtung and Emilie Friedlander also announced a new project, AdHoc.fm, which will be "a 100% independent, daily music and visual culture publication" and is "coming in 2012."
Ad Hoc are throwing a New Year's Eve party at 285 Kent (12/31) with sets by AraabMuzik, Balam Acab, Light Asylum, Laurel Halo, Run DMT, a special guest, and Weird Magic DJs. Tickets for the show are on sale now. More details and dates are below.
Laurel Halo will also be DJing in NYC on New Year's Eve at Zebulon with DJ Hiro Kone and a band TBA. They'll be spinning "Italo Disco, House, Soul, Techno, Postpunk; whatever makes you move."
Another similar electronic-filled NYE option is the Nosaj Thing show at Glasslands (12/31). When we first discussed the show, no openers had been announced yet. We now know that the bill also includes El Topo (aka Dave Harrington of Nicolas Jaar's Darkside project), Archie Pelago, and DJIlirjana (Pop Manifesto/Typical Girls). Tickets are still available.
Speaking of AraabMuzik, he released the deluxe edition to his album Electronic Dream last week. The album features six new tracks, including the Deadmau5-sampling "I Remember," which you can stream below. We recently spoke to Gang Gang Dance engineer Sean Maffucci who is in New Moods, and he said "I don't think I've heard a record like this before. It seems to break every production rule and yet sounds so sweet and pleasing to the ears."

Some recent Total Control cover art
Australian synth-punks Total Control are currently on tour with Thee Oh Sees, where they'll be in Texas for the Fun Fun Fun Fest this weekend, and then touring the rest of the country, with two stops in NYC: November 17 at 285 Kent and November 18 at Le Poisson Rouge. (For ticket links, click the dates.) All Oh Sees/Total Control tour dates are at the bottom of this post.
Although their web presence is minimal and enigmatic, Total Control's lineage is not: Daniel Young is in Straightjacket Nation, and Mikey Young spends time in Eddy Current Suppression Ring and both are also in UV Race. (Fellow UV Racer Alistair Montfort, plus Zephyr Pavey and James Vinciguerra round out the live line-up.) After a string of 7"s the band released Henge Beat back in August, a real corker of a debut album. It divides its time between motorik synth workouts, jittery post-punk and more Eddy Current style stormers, with a nice layer of repetition repetition repetition coating the whole shebang. You can stream one of the album tracks at the bottom of this post.
Thee Oh Sees' Carrion Crawler / The Dream
Most recently, Total Control released a split 12" with their current tourmates Thee Oh Sees on John Dwyer's Castle Face label which is worth picking up too. It is probably no surprise to learn that there's another Oh Sees album on the way, Carrion Crawler / The Dream, due November 15 on In the Red. Recorded live to tape over a few days this past June, it's a return to the more familiar Oh Sees sound after the demented psych folk that was Castlemania which came out back in May. You can download the two tracks that make up the album title at the top of this post.
Don't forget, this current line-up of Thee Oh Sees features Lars Finberg of The Intelligence and recent, well-deserved recipient of The Stranger's Genius Award for Music. Not that you need any more reasons to go to either (or both) of these shows.
Oh Sees / Total Control tour dates and a Total Control audio stream are below.
