Some recent Total Control cover art

Australian synth-punks Total Control are currently on tour with Thee Oh Sees, where they'll be in Texas for the Fun Fun Fun Fest this weekend, and then touring the rest of the country, with two stops in NYC: November 17 at 285 Kent and November 18 at Le Poisson Rouge. (For ticket links, click the dates.) All Oh Sees/Total Control tour dates are at the bottom of this post.

Although their web presence is minimal and enigmatic, Total Control's lineage is not: Daniel Young is in Straightjacket Nation, and Mikey Young spends time in Eddy Current Suppression Ring and both are also in UV Race. (Fellow UV Racer Alistair Montfort, plus Zephyr Pavey and James Vinciguerra round out the live line-up.) After a string of 7"s the band released Henge Beat back in August, a real corker of a debut album. It divides its time between motorik synth workouts, jittery post-punk and more Eddy Current style stormers, with a nice layer of repetition repetition repetition coating the whole shebang. You can stream one of the album tracks at the bottom of this post.

Thee Oh Sees' Carrion Crawler / The Dream

Most recently, Total Control released a split 12" with their current tourmates Thee Oh Sees on John Dwyer's Castle Face label which is worth picking up too. It is probably no surprise to learn that there's another Oh Sees album on the way, Carrion Crawler / The Dream, due November 15 on In the Red. Recorded live to tape over a few days this past June, it's a return to the more familiar Oh Sees sound after the demented psych folk that was Castlemania which came out back in May. You can download the two tracks that make up the album title at the top of this post.

Don't forget, this current line-up of Thee Oh Sees features Lars Finberg of The Intelligence and recent, well-deserved recipient of The Stranger's Genius Award for Music. Not that you need any more reasons to go to either (or both) of these shows.

Oh Sees / Total Control tour dates and a Total Control audio stream are below.

As previously mentioned, Black Star will return for a pair of dates at Best Buy Theater, and on the same night. Saturday December 3rd will see Yasiin and Talib Kweli perform their only LP in its entirety at an 8:00 show and an 11:30 show. Tickets are on sale for both. Talib Kweli joined Res and band to form Idle Warship, at the BrooklynVegan Day Party on Saturday (10/22) before heading to the Duck Down vs Blacksmith showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg next door. Pictures from the BV party are on the way, but we have a set of pictures in this post from the show Talib Kweli played at the Mohawk one night earlier (yes he was in Texas playing a show after midnight the night before he headlined our show at 5pm in Brooklyn!).

In related news, Wu-Tang Clan (billed as with Method Man, RZA, GZA, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, U-God, Inspectah Deck, and Masta Killa) will also head to Best Buy Theater in the coming months, hitting the venue on December 18th as part of a string of live dates that will also include Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ on 12/15 and Northern Lights in Clifton Park, NY on 12/17. Ponytail @ Williamsburg Waterfront (more by Bao Nguyen)

"We regret to inform you that the wonder group known as Ponytail have officially called it a day. After releasing their amazing album "Do Whatever You Want All the Time" they were unable to make the touring portion come to life as the members have dispersed across the country in search of other life experiences. It's a bummer the world will never see Ponytail live again because it was truly honest music that filled you with extreme joy. An experience like that is rare these days and if you did see Ponytail live consider yourself lucky. Hopefully more bands will come along like Ponytail and shed light on the fakers.
Much love to the future."

Xoxo. Sir james winnie
This message from the band comes just six months after they let everyone know that they did NOT break up. RIP Ponytail, sorry I'll never get to see you one more time.

One of those members they're referring to is Dustin Wong who happens to be playing a show at 285 Kent is Brooklyn tonight (9/22). His guitar playing skills are ace. Don't miss him. Dive and Heaven's Gate are both also on the bill.

Brand new Ponytail video (their parting gift) below...

Bjork

They describe it like this:

LiveMusicVideo Theatre Company will present BjorkBall, The Unofficial Biophilia CD Release Party: a Bjork-inspired multimedia retrospective celebration and dance party, at 285 KENT in Williamsburg, BK on Thursday, September 29th, 2011 at 7:00PM.

BjorkBall is a one-night-only event completely inspired by the life and work of Björk, and triggered especially by the jaw-dropping multimedia presentation of the upcoming release of Biophilia, her newest musical project and forthcoming full-length studio album. BjorkBall is a PARTY you won't want to miss; a costume ball; a DJ dance hall; a multimedia performance art retrospective of Björk's work featuring live performances that pop up throughout the evening, created specifically to represent one song from each of Björk's former albums and culminating in a large fashion installation inspired by the newest, Biophilia. Amidst Björk-inspired, interactive installations, DJs spinning sick remixes, and a party atmosphere where people are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite Björk incarnation, the larger pop-up performances will span the mediums of dance, video, projection, fashion, song, and more - a stimulating collision of the visual and the aural combining to make a massive, celebratory night in honor of music, dance, art, life, and... well, Björk!

Contributing artists include SOTU Productions, Natalie Johns (former Bjorkestra front-woman), Bluecrash Event Director, TAJ Dance, DJ Narcisse, Built4Collapse Theatre Company, and many more.

LiveMusicVideo (Stephen F. Arnoczy and Liz Alderfer) seeks to create a tangential music experience through the deconstruction and re-imagining of the art form of the music video. BjorkBall will be the inaugural evening-length event presented by LiveMusicVideo, founded in 2010.

BjorkBall will begin at 7:00PM. Tickets, priced at $10, are available for advanced purchase at http://bjorkball.eventbrite.com/ or at the door on the evening of the event.

Biophilia was supposed to be out that same week, but the release date has been pushed back to October 10th (UK) /11th (US). Get the app now though.

Pictureplane at 285 Kent (via Steven Read)
Pictureplane

Pictureplane played 285 Kent on Saturday (7/23) as part of his tour with Teengirl Fantasy. The show was the album release party for Thee Physical, which was available as a cassette. Despite Todd P's valiant efforts to provide A/C at 285 Kent, they weren't able to cool down the extremely hot venue. Todd P retweeted Mookie Singerman of Lovepump Records (home of Pictureplane) who said, "AC IS ON AT 285 KENT!!! WATERSHED MOMENT IN DIY TODD P HISTORY." with the added, "Somebody spoke too soon!" And they did. Pictureplane said the show "was a high point in my 'career' as a performer. I didn't know my body could sweat like that." Those in attendance (tweets above) suffered the heat too, but feedback was still positive as ever.

I wonder what the A/C situation will be at 285 Kent tonight (7/26) for the Silent Barn Benefit. with Bomb the Music Industry and secret guests.

There are a few more dates on the Pictureplane/Teengirl Fantasy tour which culminates at the end of the month in Buffalo, NY. Each artist will also play their own Warm Up show at PS1 in August. Pictureplane's is on August 20, after he finishes a tour with Javelin. The PS1 bill also includes Juan Maclean, Blood Orange, Solange, Grimes, and Ford & Lopatin (DJ). After that, Pictureplane will play two more NYC shows. The first is on September 1 at Cameo Gallery. Lineup and ticket info coming soon. He'll then play a Jelly RockBeach show on September 3 with Wise Blood and others.

Pictureplane's tour with Javelin doesn't hit the east coast at all, but Javelin play their own NYC show at 285 Kent on September 17.

Updated dates below...

Javelin at Mercury Lounge in May (more by Chris La Putt)
Javelin

We recently mentioned that Mount Eerie will play September 26 at Le Poisson Rouge (tickets). He's since announced a Brooklyn show happening a few days earlier on September 21 at 285 Kent Ave. Still no full tour announcement.

Javelin will also play 285 Kent, but on September 17, after finishing up a short West Coast tour in August with Hollagramz and Pictureplane, whose Brooklyn show with Teengirl Fantasy and Gatekeeper was just moved to 285 Kent.

The Javelin/Pictureplane/Hollagramz West Coast tour intersects with the previously announced Tri Angle tour on August 16 at Echoplex in LA. That tour was scheduled to have Holy Other, oOoOO and Tri Angle DJs, though due to health issues Holy Other has had to cancel his US shows, Mercury Lounge and PS1 included. A message on Tri Angle's site reads:

"We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but regretfully it's our job to announce that Holy Other has had to cancel all of his upcoming US dates due to ill health. Holy Other is still planning on playing shows in the US in the foreseeable future, but circumstance has unfortunately made it impossible for Holy Other to fulfill the shows he had scheduled for July / August. Consequently Tri Angle DJs have also had to pull out from the forthcoming shows. oOoOO will still be playing, and a suitable replacement support act is currently being figured out. We hope you understand. Thanks."
oOoOO plays NYC (without Holy Other) on August 11 at Mercury Lounge and August 13 at PS1 with Tri Angle labelmates Clams Casino, Ayshay, and Water Borders. Tickets for the Mercury show are still on sale and advanced tickets for the PS1 show are available at locations listed below.

All dates below...

Coco66 in October 2010 (more by Andrew St. Clair)
Coco66

As mentioned, Coco66 was shut down on July 9 so SBTRKT couldn't DJ after his PS1 show. We also recently mentioned that the July 23rd Pictureplane, Teengirl Fantasy, Gatekeeper show originally scheduled at Coco66 has been moved to 285 Kent. That's because Coco66 never reopened after the SBTRKT incident...

It seems that Greenpoint music venue and bar Coco66 was raided by both the NYPD and SLA for operating without a liquor license last weekend. According to reports at Paper and New York Shitty, the authorities showed up at some point Saturday night and arrested the venue's owner David Kelleran and in a scene out of prohibition, all of the booze was destroyed by the SLA when they made the bartenders pour out every last drop of about $20,000 worth of alcohol. What a waste! The bar's problems began in October, 2010 when the NYPD conducted an initial raid and lost its liquor license. Kelleran had been buying booze at retail shops for the bar's events and apparently wants to try to reopen the bar without a liquor license. [Eater]
No events are currently scheduled at Coco66.

Fucked Up

285 Kent was super sold-out. There seemed to be a lot of hype around Iceage, who started the show. I'm not really sure why.

Jeff the Brotherhood followed and Jake kept getting shocked from the mic, so he put his sock over it to dampen the effect. Given how hot and sticky it was in there, that had to be kinda gross to put his mouth against. Nobody ever said rock'n'roll was easy. Or wouldn't involve singing into your sock.

Fucked Up soundchecked with the Game of Thrones intro song, which was really badass. It reminded me of when Slash played the Godfather theme at Guns shows. Damian seems to be on a workout regimen of powerlifting audience members to stay in shape. He also passed out waterbottles to the crowd to give him a shower, which had to be refreshing because it was motherfucking hot in that place. It seems to be cooled with a single air-conditioner in the back wall. It read 60 degrees, which I assume was celsius.

It was one of those shows that when it's over everybody in the front is literally drenched in sweat, and most of it other people's. Some guy wiped his face all over Damian's stomach pretty far into the set, and I could see Damian's gut sweat running off the dude's face after he did it. I honestly can't imagine ever being drunk enough to think doing that is a good idea, but whatever, it's a party.

Oh yeah, also, some dude was stagediving barefoot. Just for the record, dudes' feet are totally gross. If some guy is up on the crowd barefoot, and his toe goes in your eye or mouth, it is completely justifiable for you and your friends to stomp the ever-loving shit out of him to discourage any type of that hippie behavior in the future. Dudes' toes have absolutely no place at rock shows, unless you are taking your sock off to put it on a microphone......

More pictures Saturday night's show at 285, and a video, below...

Bush Tetras
Bush Tetras

New York's Bush Tetras had a no wave link, via guitarist Pat Place's association with James Chance, but the band's sound was neither frantic nor disjointed enough to be properly categorized with those bands. They played scrappy post-punk, with fellow Americans Pylon and Konk and Brits Delta 5 and Au Pairs as close contemporaries. If there's any one song the Bush Tetras are known for, it's 1980's "Too Many Creeps" -- the band's most representative song and also the catchiest, made by the kind of jagged rhythms, slicing guitars, and sniping vocals that were used throughout their short lifespan. -[Allmusic]
One listen to "Too Many Creeps" (which was recently reiussed on wax) and it becomes evident how many bands followed in the footsteps of this NYC band who originally called it quits in 1983. Since that initial break, Cynthia Sley has stayed fairly active while the Bush Tetras have reunited on and off, most recently playing at Le Poisson Rouge and The Kitchen in NYC. The reunion continues TONIGHT (6/24) in a very different space, 285 Kent Ave, as the band will team up with Friends, Coathangers, and Religious to Damn for a show that kicks off at 8PM ($10). Yes, Bush Tetras are that "special guests TBA" last time we mentioned this show.

Tonight's date at 285 Kent is one of two NYC shows for the touring Coathangers, who also play Cake Shop Saturday (6/25) with Teen Witch and The Nec. Teen Witch also recently played Death By Audio with Heavy Cream.

285 Kent holds a different and equally compelling show Saturday: Fucked Up, Jeff The Brotherhood, & Iceage.

Bush Tetras recently popped in to WFMU to play a set. Stream it.

Check out some video and show details below.
