The Vaccines

NME coverstars The Vaccines played a bunch of shows last week in Austin during SXSW. On Wednesday morning at like 10am I accidentally caught them playing/soundchecking on an outdoor AOL stage surrounded by GIANT Vaccines and AOL banners and a giant camera crew and AOL employees and security guards and lots of other people working at the early morning high budget production (you can watch the results HERE). I was actually on my way to the BrooklynVegan day party at Emo's where we had them playing later in the afternoon (and where they ended up playing a super short set due to worry about the singer's voice being strained or something). The pictures in this post are from a show they played later in the week at Filter's Cedar Street Courtyard.

The Vaccines were last in NYC when they made their U.S. debut at shows at Bowery Ballroom and Glasslands. They'll be back when they hit the road to support the Arctic Monkeys whose previously announced tour brings both bands to a sold out Central Park Summerstage on May 24th, a week before the Vaccines LP "What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?" drops via Columbia Records here in the U.S. The Vaccines play Letterman on June 7th.

Band of Horses

"Friday I worked until 6 and after went to Grand Central Station to try to catch a free Band of Horses concert, but of course by the time I got there it was full, so I hung around outside for a while trying to listen, but I couldn't hear too well so I left. Huge bummer, I would have loved to see them. Then I met up with my friend and we walked around the East Village, hung out on the roof of her apartment, and went and got Peruvian food- it was verrrrry yummy." [Forever Young]
As I type this, Band of Horses have already finished playing their Sunday night headlining set at Williamsburg Waterfront in Brooklyn (and their Saturday night set in Toronto), but this post is about their Friday evening AOL pop-up show at Grand Central. Some more pictures, officially & unofficially shot video (including an interview) & the setlist from that one, below...

Band of Horses @ SXSW (more by Bryan Bruchman)
Band of Horses

Band of Horses play this Sunday at Williamsburg Waterfront with Grizzly Bear and Karen Elson. That's sold out. On Saturday, Band of Horses are playing as part of Broken Social Scene's Toronto Island concert along with Pavement, Beach House, Timber Timbre and others. That show is now part of NXNE, and they'll be letting in 250 badgeholders from the fest. Tickets are still on sale.

And Friday (6/18), Band of Horses will be playing a free AOL-sponsored show at an as-of-now-secret location in Manhattan at 6:30pm (which means Band of Horses are playing NYC, then Toronto, then NYC again this weekend). The Manhattan location is expected to be revealed Thursday at noon. We'll of course post it as soon as it is. The band so far tweeted a map of midtown (which has Radio City in the center of it) so the show might be somewhere in that area or not (presumably not South Street Seaport). The tweeted pic is below.

The free show is following in the pattern of what AOL did at SXSW for their secret/surprise parking garage show with Broken Bells and a different band each day that March week.

Broken Social Scene's concert-scored film This Movie Is Broken, directed by Bruce McDonald and soundtracked with footage from BSS's Toronto Island show in 2009, is screening on Thursday (6/17) at 92YTribeca (it's a fictional story, part of which takes place at the show, with music and clips from the gig throughout). That screening is sold out, but "a limited number of tickets for sold out events may be available one hour before curtain." Broken Social Scene play NYC's Rumsey Playfield in September.

The trailer for that film, the above-mentioned BoH pic and some videos below...

Broken Bells
Broken Bells

There's been a lot of buzz around the festival about Broken Bells, the new project of the Shins' frontman James Mercer and artist-producer Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton).

Now, reaction to the debut disc has been mixed (we thought it fell short of the hype), but seeing them live is making us think we need to take another listen. It's woozy psych-influenced pop, with a bit of hip-hop swing to the beats, and while their songs didn't initially hit us that hard, they're starting to grow on us.

We caught their final performance of SXSW Saturday afternoon, on the patio at Mohawks, which had been at capacity since at least 1pm, with a line up down the street bigger than the crowd inside, which should give you some idea of the attention they're getting. [Now Toronto]

After leaving NYC, Broken Bells ended up playing at least four times during SXSW. The first of those shows was this semi-surprise AOL pop up show in a parking garage on Red River (right down the street from the BV party at Emo's happening at the same time) on Wednesday, March 17th. The second Broken Bells show was that night Stubb's (right down the street from the BV show at Club DeVille). More pictures from the AOl show below...

Grizzly Bear

When they weren't busy talking to the NY Times, Fader, New York Magazine, The New Yorker, or one of the many other publications who wrote about them this month, Grizzly Bear stopped by the AOL studios for a session with the Interface. MP3 and picture from that above.

The band also visited WNYC the other day. The results of that session can be streamed at WNYC's site (or downloaded here).

Their new album Veckatimest was released Tuesday, and last night (5/28) was the first of two shows for the band at Town Hall in NYC. Tonight (5/29) is the second. Here We Go Magic is the opener on the whole tour. Pictures are coming, but in the meantime, last night's setlist is below...

Annuals

"Since we first welcomed Annuals on the [AOL] Interface in 2006, a lot has changed. For starters, most of the members are able to legally enter the 21+ venues that they play in. Still, while their sound has also matured, the band's inspirations remain the same, particularly when it comes to visuals. "It comes from these fantasy books that I've been reading since I was twelve or thirteen by Terry Goodkind," keyboardist Anna Spence tells Spinner. "He's really awesome. We always wanted to be animated 'cause we're really bad actors. We're not good in videos."

The North Carolina sextet has been touring relentlessly behind their latest album, 'Such Fun,' but stopped long enough to unload their equipment into our Los Angeles studio, replete with two drum sets and four percussionists, for some drum-laden chaos." [Spinner]

Annuals are on tour now and hit Bowery Ballroom in NYC TONIGHT (January 28) with Jessica Lee Mayfield and What Laura Says. All dates below...
