someone let Witz on the stage last night @ Roseland Ballroom in NYC
My Bloody Valentine @ Roseland

The Wounded Knees (with special guest J Mascis), My Bloody Valentine and Le Volume Courbe played Roseland Ballroom in NYC last night (9/22). The above picture is proof.

Formed in Dublin in 1984, [My Bloody Valentine] developed its initial sound as a reaction against what other bands were doing, Mr. Shields said. Most were using the cushy sounds of flangers and chorus pedals; My Bloody Valentine, using an effect called reverse reverb, strove for something "ambient but upfront, with a dryness," Mr. Shields said. Later the band would pile up countless other effects -- loops, echoes, distortion boxes -- creating the sonic onslaught that has been cited as an influence by virtually every collegiate or indie-rock band that knows how to set off feedback. [NY Times]
Le Volume Courbe (here from the UK initially to play the MBV-curated day at ATP Sunday) will play two more NYC shows before they leave. Those, and other dates are below.

Friend-of-MBV Gemma Hayes plays the Virgin Megastore in NYC today (9/23). Last night she was at Mercury Lounge. On Sunday she was at ATP. More pictures from her ATP performance are below too.

My Bloody Valentine do it (Roseland) again tonight (9/23) with Lilys. From there MBV move on to Toronto. MBV ATP setlist & pics are HERE (along with lots of Roseland reviews in the comments). More Lilys ATP pics are, also, below...

Growing (Joe Denardo and Kevin Doria) are an experimental/drone duo originally from Seattle that have relocated to Brooklyn. Growing's music resides on a very specific plane that embraces intense rhythmic patterns and quirky experimentation. Ranging between pedal-heavy loop collages and electronic ambient explorations, they are equally at home opening for Boris (as they did in April) as they are opening for Hot Chip, which is what they're doing on their next tour that hits Pop Montreal October 1st and NYC two and three days later.

Like Boris, their catalog is incredibly varied. Their new record for The Social Registry, All The Way, is an unrelenting panorama of looped effects and mesmerizing drone at very determined pacing. The new single, "Wrong Ride" (video below), sounds like the soundtrack to a nitrous high under a radiator. I haven't stopped listening to All The Way since it dropped a couple weeks ago and I'm looking forward to their next live show.

This past weekend they played the ATP festival in upstate NY. Download their set as an MP3. More ATP pictures, the video, and all tour dates below...

After a great (and late) Saturday-night, morning (3pm) bloomed with Robin Guthrie (co-founder of Cocteau Twins) and his shimmering ambient soundscapes in the main room. Backlit by projections of fractals and waves, it was the perfect way to ease into Sunday. Le Volume Courbe and Wounded Knees (both opening for MBV tonight at Roseland) had already played on stage two, but sadly, I missed them.

While Guthrie shined on, I scooted on over to stage deux and caught a few minutes of sunny pop by The Lilys (opener for MBV in NYC night two).

"We are sad to announce that we have had to cancel our remaining American and Canadian shows due to ill health. Our other dates in Europe and Japan will be going ahead as planned. We will re-schedule the shows in 2009.

I [Martin] was taken into hospital last night almost immediately after the show at ATP. I've been having some problems with my pacemaker for the duration of the tour and it unfortunately culminated in me being sent to the emergency room. The doctors there initially thought i would have to have corrective surgery at a larger hospital nearer NYC but i have been given the all clear to travel home on the understanding that i go straight to my cardiologist on arrival back in Scotland.

Tbh, i'm really bummed about having to go home and feel for the folk who had bought tickets for our upcoming shows but i can honestly say it would be almost impossible for me to carry on at this point as my pacemaker has broken skin and the surrounding area has become infected.

Get well soon Martin. Did you rock too hard at ATP? It is quite possible.

Fuck Buttons were touring with Mogwai. No word on if the band will scramble to put together some dates or just head on home.

My Bloody Valentine

On my way back to stage one from Brian Jonestown Massacre, ATP staffers were passing out a specific type of earplug chosen by My Bloody Valentine for distribution at their performance. Dope. After much fanfare, and a loooot of stage set-up and waiting, My Bloody Valentine entered the stage to chants of "MBV!" around 12:40 AM (Sunday night, Monday morning).

One word. Devastating.

Gemma Hayes

My Bloody Valentine chose Irish singer/songwriter Gemma Hayes to perform at ATP in upstate NY this past Sunday. Now she's is in NYC to play two shows. The first is tonight (9/22) at Mercury Lounge - it's the early show before Low (who also played ATP). The second is free at the Virgin Megastore on Tuesday. Her new album The Hollow of Morning is out September 30th via Second Motion Records.

My Bloody Valentine, who headlined Sunday at ATP, also play NYC on Monday and Tuesday, and though Gemma is not opening those shows, she is opening some of the other dates on MBV's US tour. All GH dates below...

My Bloody Valentine

My Bloody Valentine played their first US show in 16 years last night at ATP NY @ Kutscher's (9/21/08). It was also the final, headlining performance of a three day weekend full of musicians playing at the old resort in the Catskill Mountains - many of them chosen by MBV to play the festival. My Bloody Valentine's next shows are Monday and Tuesday night in NYC. Stay tuned for the setlist and more about this show, and the entire ATP day three. But for now, more pictures from MBV @ ATP, below...

British experimentalist Alexander Tucker kicked off ATP day two (9/20) with looping pedals and acoustic instruments (cello, guitar). A very interesting artist to start my day with and worth further investigation.

Next came ATP's own Apse and their triple guitar attack. They had some truly soaring moments.

Growing and their effects-laden noise drones sounded great on stage two, though sometimes I find it hard to watch a knob-twiddling live show.

Probably my biggest surprise of the day was The Drones who were urgent, angular, and punky. I was familiar with some of their work through a certain Vegan pal of mine. I will be familiar with more and won't miss them next time they make it to NYC (Philly, Richmond & DC have the chance over the next three days).

Shellac @ ATP NY

Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland will release his second solo album on November 18, a decade after his first solo outing hit stores.

"Happy," which will be issued on Weiland's own Softdrive label, boasts guest appearances from three members of No Doubt: bassist Tony Kanal, guitarist Tom Dumont and drummer Adrian Young. It was co-produced by Weiland and Doug Grean, with Steve Albini also engineering a handful of songs. [Billboard]

After Tortoise and Thurston Moore played, Built To Spill performed Perfect From Now On to close out the "Don't Look Back" portion of ATP in the Catskill Mountains on Friday (Sept 19)

Built to Spill inadvertently signaled the "all clear" to the soundman, Doug kinda shrugged and said "let's just go for it". Of course, that meant on stage technical issues plagued their set, but to the audience (and me), it had no outward effect on their performance, nor did it change the sheer emotional power behind the songs on Perfect From Now On. Great way to start the weekend, and I would say if you are a fan of the record and missed this show, catching them at Terminal 5 is a must. Hell, maybe I'll go.

After the show, the party came alive in the multiple lounges and especially The Deep End, a gawdy 70s-style disco with a DJ until closing time (6AM). With a view of the pool, it was only logical that a few people in The Deep End reportedly found their way into the pool after 6AM for a skinny-dip.

The rest of Friday's pictures below....

Part one HERE. Part two below...

Tortoise @ ATP NY

Friday night (sept 19) was the "Don't Look Back" night of the All Tomorrow's Parties festival at Kutscher's in upstate NY. That means bands on the bill played one of their older, well-regarded albums in its entirety.

Tortoise played Millions Now Living Will Never Die, sounding super tight and extremely impressive. Dueling xylophones were heavenly against the backdrop of synth/noise looping, and Doug McCombs definitely knows his way around a baritone guitar and bass.

Thurston Moore
thurston moore @ ATP NY

Thurston Moore was up next, and if you have ever seen Sonic Youth or happened to read our recent review of Thurston's solo show in MA, you know what to expect.... Thurston wailing on the guitar, hand sliding up and down the neck like he's jerking it off, and feedback squalls even for a record which I found to be relatively poppy. Joining him on stage was "the only remaining member of the Psychic Hearts" band, Steve Shelley.

"Do you realize this record was written in a day?" Thurston said somewhat incredulously. "Recorded that day and mixed that night." Yeah, we can't believe it either.

I cut the Thurston Moore set a tad early to catch the last 5 minutes or so of Eugene Mirman's set (I completely missed Joe DeRosa and Maria Bamford) followed by Patton Oswalt. The comedians were playing the second stage, more of a ballroom-conference room-y space adorned with odd crystal chandeliers and lots of chairs set up for the comedy set. It might be tough to see the bands there, I guess I'll find out Saturday.

The final recap from Friday, not to mention Saturday and Sunday, is on its way. Listen now on WFMU. Try and score a last-minute free ticket, Look at more pictures of Tortoise and Thurston below...
