Rough Trade NYC on Record Store Day 2014 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
RT

As they usually are, Rough Trade Shops are one of the first this year to post their favorite albums of 2014 list. It's 100 albums long and mostly filled with the bigger indie and indie-related releases of the year, but there's a few surprises in there too. Mark Kozelek will not be happy to see that The War On Drugs placed #2, 8 higher than the Sun Kil Moon record. Mark should be proud that he made the list not once, but TWICE though. His Christmas album landed at #84. Run the Jewels, who are not on it all, have started a "Suck My Dick Rough Trade" chant. Check out their full list below and see more on each album here.

Meanwhile, Rough Trade the NYC venue is open this weekend with Sallie Ford / Crooked Fingers tonight, followed by two shows from The Dream Syndicate.

List below...

Pitchfork

Yesterday, Pitchfork posted their top 200 tracks of the decade so far, and today they've listed the top 100 albums to have come out between 2010-2014. There's some surprises on there. For example, I didn't expect to see Bon Iver's self-titled, their #1 album of 2011 and with a score of 9.5, rank as low as #27 on this list. I was also surprised to see Chief Keef make it but not, say, Shabazz Palaces or Schoolboy Q. And there's a few other glaring omissions: nothing by The National? Grizzly Bear? One thing that will surprise no one though, is their #1 pick.

You can check out the full list below...

Angels & Devils artwork
The Bug

UK producer The Bug has been talking about his guest-filled LP Angels & Devils for over two years now, and it looks like it's finally ready to come out this month (8/26) via Ninja Tune. Four of the album's tracks, the ones featuring Grouper (Liz Harris), Death Grips, Gonjasufi and Manga, can be streamed below. The LP also features guitar from Godflesh/Jesu's Justin Broadrick, vocals from Inga Copeland, and other collaborations including Israel's Miss Red who was here with him in March (a trip that included SXSW). Full tracklist below as well.

This fall, The Bug will be going on a North American tour, playing collaborative sets with LP contributor Manga. That tour kicks off in NYC on October 8 at Output for a show with The Bug's Ninja Tune labelmate Actress. That's a great double bill of leftfield dance music. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

All dates are listed, with those song streams and tracklist, below...

Actress
Actress

Actress recently released his newest album, Ghettoville, which seemed like it would be his last, but whether or not it is, he's still playing shows. The UK producer will return to NYC to hit Cameo Gallery on April 11. There's good local support on that bill too, including Dutch E Germ, who makes his "live debut" at this show (he's played other shows though), and Software-signed producer Huerco S. Tickets for that show are on sale now. All Actress dates are listed below.

Dutch E Germ, aka ex-Gang Gang Dance member Timothy Dewit, recently released his IN.RAK.DUST EP, which you can stream below. You can also stream his earlier single, "HBA War," which you may recognize as the song Kanye sampled on "New Slaves."

BEMF

The Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival is just around the corner, with a kickoff show tonight (11/7) and then starting in full this weekend, and the set times for the festival have just been released. Head HERE to check out the full, interactive schedule, where you can make your own personal schedule and also share it with others. You'll notice a couple things were switched too, like Pete Tong's show moving from 285 Kent to Music Hall of Williamsburg and Actress in turn moving from MHOW to 285.

Tonight's kickoff show starts at 10 PM at Output with Skream, MK, Oneman, and more. The rest of the festival continues from Friday (11/8) to Sunday (11/10) across multiple Brooklyn venues with sets from Evian Christ, Lunice, Actress, Oneohtrix Point Never, Kastle, xxxy and many more.

There's also been a few lineup changes: Todd Terje had to drop off due to a family emergency, and Letherette and Andre Bratten can no longer make it due to visa issues.

3-day passes and individual tickets are still available.

Actress

UK producer Actress has announced that he'll release the followup to his 2012 LP, R.I.P. -- though it's the "sequel" to his 2008 debut Hazyville -- Ghettoville on January 28 via Ninja Tune and his own Werkdiscs label. The album announcement comes with the following message:

Ghettoville is the bleached out and black tinted conclusion of the Actress image.

Where the demands of writing caught the artist slumped and reclined, devoid of any soul, acutely aware of the simulated prism that required breakout.

Four albums in and the notes and compositions no longer contain decipherable language.

The scripts now carry tears, the world has returned to a flattened state, and out through that window, the birds look back into the cage they once inhabited.

Spitting flames behind a white wall of silence.

The machines have turned to stone, data reads like an obituary to its user.

A fix is no longer a release, it's a brittle curse. Zero satisfaction, no teeth, pseudo artists running rampant, but the path continues.

R.I.P Music 2014.

Actress

You can pre-order the album now. There's a few different packages, including a 3-disc box set that includes a remastered release of Hazyville and a 32-page artbook. That's the artwork above, and the tracklist is below.

As discussed, Actress will be returning to the US for this year's Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival. He plays the fest on Saturday (11/9) at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Tickets for that show are still available, as are 3-day passes for the whole fest.

LP tracklist below...

Pitchfork Albums

Today Pitchfork posted the first half (well, first 30 albums) of their Top 50 Albums of 2012 list. There are some surprises on it, like Peaking Lights and Sharon Van Etten, who seemed more likely to end up on their Honorable Mentions list due to their relatively lower scores and the fact that most of the albums on this list were awarded Best New Music throughout the year. Cat Power and Hot Chip also make it, both of whose new albums seemed to have received less love from Pitchfork than previous releases by those artists. A Rustie Essential Mix also makes the list even though his actual album which came out last year didn't make their 2011 list. And of course the expected ones end up there too like Purity Ring, Julia Holter, Schoolboy Q, Miguel, and more. The remaining 20 will be revealed tomorrow (Friday, 12/21).

Check out their 50-30 picks below...

Kendrick Lamar

FACT is still one of the best sources for cutting edge electronic music, and I always look forward to their top 50 albums of the year list, which they've just published for 2012. As usual, it doesn't only contain electronic albums.

This year's list has a good deal of indie rap (Haleek Maul, Schoolboy Q, Le1f, Main Attrakionz, Spaceghostpurrp) and it's the only non-metal list I've seen so far with Black Breath's Sentenced to Life (!). And of course, to compliment the dancefloor records, it's got its fair share of electronic-tinged indie pop, forward thinking R&B, and outsider experimental music.

Check out the full list below.

The Faint at Webster Hall in 2009 (more by Tim Griffin)
121212

The Faint are currently on tour celebrating the 10th anniversary of their album Danse Macabre. The party hits NYC on Friday (12/7) at Terminal 5 with Toronto's Trust and Icky Blossoms opening the show. Tickets are still available.

If you've read the site over the last week or so, you probably know we've been asking a lot of bands and artists to contribute year-end Top 10s (like Animal Collective who play Terminal 5 twice this week), and here we've got ones from both The Faint and Trust. The Faint did a collective list of favorite LPs and were only able to whittle it down to 12, including albums by Liars, Actress, Twin Shadow, Grimes (who did a list for us too) as well as both of their current tourmates. Check out the full list below.

As for Trust, main man Robert Alfons lists his 10 favorite tracks of 2012 and the top three spots all go to the same artist. Any guesses who? Don't forget that Trust will DJ late night at Glasslands on Friday (12/7) after their T5 show. Black Marble will play live and tickets are still available.

The Faint and Trust's 2012 Top 10 lists are below.

Continue reading "The Faint and Trust list their Favorite Music of 2012; on tour, playing Terminal 5 this week"

Animal Collective

As mentioned, Animal Collective are playing two nights at Terminal 5 (12/4-5) to make up for their cancelled Williamsburg Park show. The first night (12/4) is with Traxman, and no opener has been announced yet for the second night. Tickets for both shows are still available and a portion of the proceeds will go to The American Red Cross to help Hurricane Sandy relief.

Like Amanda Palmer, Animal Collective just spoke to us about their top 10 things of 2012, some of which were albums, like the one by their tourmates Micachu & The Shapes and the new Madlib-produced Georgia Anne Muldrow album, whereas other things on the list were restaurants they had memorable dinners at and British sketch comedy shows. You can check out the whole thing below.

Actress

Bummer news: tonight's Actress show at Cameo has been canceled "due to Visa issues" and "will be rescheduled to a later date. For those who purchased advanced tickets, you will receive an email with the option for a refund within the next few days. New date will be announced soon."

Meanwhile, Werkhaus reports:

Moiré (soon to be releasing on Werkdiscs) & ACTRESS have been secretly working on a score, invited by Tate Collective and the infamous immersive theatre co Punchdrunk, to collaborate as part of a live event with art, performance art and music this Saturday, 22nd Sept. Punchdrunk have in turn choreographed a live performance to the score. A first for us!
Werkdiscs is the label co-founded by Darren J. Cunningham, aka Actress. As for Moiré, not much is known but you can check out his (her? their?) "A number of Patterns" mixtape below.

Moogfest 2011 (more by Diana Wong)
Moogfest

Moogfest, which is becoming one of the most intriguing US music festivals, is returning to Asheville, NC this year on October 26 and 27. Like in past years, the festival includes some legends like Thomas Dolby and GZA performing Liquid Swords (like he is in NYC and other cities), some of our favorite newcomers like Julia Holter, Trust, and Disclosure, electronic heavy hitters like Orbital, Four Tet, Squarepusher, Richie Hawtin, Mouse on Mars, and Prefuse 73 with Teebs, in addition to a diverse list of other artists like Killer Mike, El-P, The Magnetic Fields, Explosions in the Sky, Primus, Santigold, Divine Fits, Actress, Pantha Du Prince, Bear in Heaven, and more. Tickets for this year's fest go on sale Friday (8/10) at noon. The initial lineup is listed below.

Orbital, who released their new album, Wonky, this year, which featured a track with Zola Jesus, have a few other North American dates this year (still none in NYC though).

For Divine Fits, the new band featuring Britt Daniel (Spoon), Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade/Handsome Furs), and Sam Brown (New Bomb Turks), who recently made their live debut in Austin, Moogfest is one of the few shows they've got scheduled this year, including the Chicago show they played last night (8/5) and an upcoming NYC show.

Moogfest 2012 lineup is listed below.

Actress

UK producer Actress (aka Darren Cunningham) released his great new album, R.I.P., this past April on Damon Albarn's Honest Jon's label. At a quick glance, R.I.P. seems like a pretty minimal IDM record, but a little more time spent with it shows that there's quite a lot going on beneath the subdued exterior. The first two tracks veer towards the chilled, ambient spectrum, but once the album dives into the aquatic synths of "Holy Water," the first of many unexpected turns are taken. Actress experiments with the deep headphone dance music of tracks like "Marble Plexus" and "The Lord's Graffiti,", the gorgeous piano playing of "Jardin," the distorted sub-bass of "Shadow From Tartarus," and the addictive synth lines of "IWAAD." The whole thing is a great listen, and if you've yet to hear it you can stream it via a spotify widget below.

Actress will be in NYC for a show at Cameo Gallery on September 20. Tickets for that show are on sale now. It's the only show we're currently aware of besides a London show with Evian Christ (who will also be in North America this summer).

A list of all currently known dates and the spotify stream below...

Teengirl Fantasy's Tracer artwork
Tracer

Brooklyn duo Teengirl Fantasy have been having a pretty solid year. Back in January, they inked a deal with R&S Records (James Blake, Lone) who are putting out their killer new single, "Motif," on vinyl on June 25 and digitally on July 9. That single comes with the b-side "Eternal" and an Actress remix of "Motif." Check out the video for "Motif" below.

Now, the duo have just announced the release of their sophomore LP, Tracer, which will be out on August 21 via R&S/True Panther. They've roped in some pretty impressive guests for the album, including Panda Bear, Romanthony (aka the voice of Daft Punk's "One More Time"), Laurel Halo, and Kelela. The album won't include "Motif," but it will include "Eternal." The full tracklist is below along with a teaser video and that's the cover art above.

You can catch Teengirl Fantasy at a local show this weekend when they open for fellow Brooklynites/True Panther labelmates Lemonade at the previously discussed Music Hall of Williamsburg show on Saturday (6/2), which also serves as the NYC debut for Elite Gymnastics. Tickets for that show are still available. All TF dates are listed below.

Speaking of Laurel Halo, she put out her own (excellent) new album, Quarantine, in Europe this week and it will see a US release next week. You can stream that album in full below.

Videos, streams, tracklist and a list of all Teengirl Fantasy dates below...

Lindstrom is currently on a tour which brings him to NYC on Friday (5/25) for the previously discussed Webster Hall show with Simian Mobile Disco (tickets). That tour will also bring him to Detroit's Movement Electronic Music Festival this weekend where he'll play alongside Public Enemy, Actress, SBTRKT, Major Lazer, Gold Panda, Nina Kraviz, Matias Aguayo, FaltyDL, AraabMUZIK and more. Tickets for the fest are on sale now. The full lineup is listed below.

In related news, as mentioned, Apparat will come to NYC after Mutek for a show at Gramercy Theater on May 31. It's since been announced that Sleepyhead will open that show. Tickets for that show are still available and we're also giving away a pair. Contest details below, along with a list of all dates, song stream, and those festival lineups.

Julia Holter @ Le Poisson Rouge in March (more by by Amanda Hatfield)
Julia Holter

Unsound Festival New York, the Poland-based series of avant-leaning, ambient and experimental music, kicks off five nights in NYC with two events tonight (4/18): instrumental Warsaw band Baaba scores animations at BAM, while Julia Holter, Julia Kent and Jenny Hval playing a sold-out show at Issue Project Room.

Check out the festival's full schedule, which includes several free shows such as LXMP and Peaking Lights at Lincoln Center's David Rubenstein Atrium on Thursday 19th (both have amazing songs on the comp below). Issue Project Room hosts free day sets Saturday and Sunday (though only tickets for Saturday appear to still be available).

Dark ambient musician and repeat Unsound artist Lustmord recently spoke with Resident Advisor about the experience of seeing someone play a laptop live...

If somebody said "an ambient musician" was playing live in town this evening, I wouldn't exactly rush out, you know? I'd rather stay home and read a book. [laughs]

[he then goes on to describe how seeing Kraftwerk live changed his mind]

I hadn't seen them live for a long time, and they played in LA--four middle aged guys on laptops, how boring is that? But, fucking hell, it was one of the best gigs I've ever seen. That's when I really thought, yeah, you can stand there with your laptop and do your thing as long as you got the fucking sound.

Lustmord collaborates with ambient musician Biosphere at an Upper West Side church on Saturday.

Inner Tube were set to play Le Poisson Rouge on Friday, but have been replaced by Mark McGuire (solo). And:

a visual program has been added to Bass Mutations on April 21, showing the ways in which visual artists have helped shape the way we imagine bass music. Curated by "Big Up Magazine" Editor-In-Chief Katya Guseva in collaboration with Dave Q from Dub War NYC, it will take place in a movie theatre adjacent to the dancefloor at the venue for the night, IndieScreen. Live audio from Bass Mutations performers such as 2562, Teeth, Sepalcure, Distal, Throwing Snow and Nguzunguzu will provide the soundtrack.
Stream an excellent playlist of Unsound artists below...
