Bridget Everett - 'Rock Bottom' at Joe's Pub 9/12/2014
Bridgett Everett

Mr. Shaiman, who pounds away at the piano keys during the show, and Mr. Wittman, who directed it, and her other collaborators, Adam Horovitz and Matt Ray, have not attempted to impose a demure superego on the rampaging id that is Ms. Everett. On the contrary, "Rock Bottom" lets her run as loose and sing as loud as ever, celebrating the louche life and flaunting her flair for exhibitionism -- sexual, emotional and physical -- across 90 minutes of hair-raising, jaw-dropping and, yes, sometimes cringe-making performance. This unbridled performer makes the breast-baring, mouthy Bette Midler of the 1970s seem like Julie Andrews trilling and twirling on that mountaintop in "The Sound of Music."

Ms. Everett performs 10 songs in the show, at least three of which feature titles that are not fit for print. One of the funniest finds her making sport of her own ample dimensions while using a festively colored sex toy of considerable size as a prop to help detail her rapacious exploits around the globe. - [NY Times]

Bridget Everett seems to be everywhere in NYC lately, with the official debut of her new show at Joe's Pub, Rock Bottom (which has been in previews for a while). In addition to the New York Times review, she was also on the cover of the 9/10 issue of The Village Voice. The very bawdy show, which also features frequent collaborator and Beastie Boys member Adam Horovitz, plays select dates through October 16 at Joe's Pub. Tickets are on sale and all show dates are listed below. We caught Rock Bottom last Friday (9/12) and pictures from that are in this post.

There's no Rock Bottom show tonight, but you can catch Bridget Everett tonight (9/18) at The Bell House as part of the kickoff event at the 2014 Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival. Tonight's show is 'The Talent Show Presents: Gowanus Idol' and has a stacked lineup of talent, also featuring Amy Schumer, Dave Hill, Ira Glass, Bobby Tisdale, Derrick Brown, Amber Tamblyn, Joseph Keckler, Eliot Glazer, Giulia Rozzi, THE ENGAGEMENTS and hosts Elna Baker and Kevin Townley. Tickets are still available.

The Julie Ruin @ Bowery Ballroom 9/3/2013
The Julie Ruin - Bowery Ballroom, NYC - September 3rd, 2013

She conceived the group as what she called her "dream band," with players from different walks of her life: on bass, her Bikini Kill band mate Kathi Wilcox; on guitar, Sara Landeau, an instructor at the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, where Ms. Hanna occasionally teaches; on drums, her friend Carmine Covelli; and Kenny Mellman, Herb of the cabaret act Kiki & Herb, as a keyboardist and songwriter. They rehearsed casually around town and at Ms. Hanna's New Jersey home -- "I can't call it jamming, because I hate that; I don't jam," she said -- without considering where it would lead.

According to Ms. Wilcox, "When she approached me to join the band, she was sort of like, 'We may never tour, we may never make a record, but we're just doing this now for fun, because I need to.' "

But Ms. Hanna arrived with some songs intact -- including one, "Just My Kind," written for Christina Aguilera -- and though she didn't have an overarching sound in mind, she knew what she liked. "I know I love sexy surf guitars, I know I love loud snare," she said. "I love really simple repeating bass lines, and I love weird mad scientist keyboard sounds."

Mr. Mellman, a musical savant and a voracious consumer of new bands, gave himself the task of keeping the Julie Ruin up-to-date. "The last thing I wanted was for it to start sounding like a '90s revival," he said.

With The Julie Ruin, Kathleen Hanna finds herself back on indie rock terra firma, but Tuesday night's album release show at Bowery Ballroom (9/3) , the band's other roots -- which might be summed up as the Joe's Pub drag-cabaret scene -- were proudly showing. Kiki & Herb's Kenny Mellman plays keyboards and their drummer Carmine Covelli also plays in Bridget Everett & the Tender Moments which also sports Hanna's hubby Adam Horovitz (who was at Bowery too, photo below) as a member. The Bowery show was hosted by everyone's favorite drag king comedian Murray Hill (who has also shared stages with Kathleen before).

Most people in attendance (a crowd that included Dave Hill and Kim Gordon) were probably too busy dancing and enjoying themselves to think about such things. While the show was a celebration of The Julie Ruin's debut album (out this week) and most of it was played, their set featured a number of Le Tigre songs. A picture of the setlist is below. The show was the kickoff to their tour and opening were sonic and cultural descendants, Swearin'. Photos from the show are in this post.

If you missed it, the tour finishes in NYC as well with a show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 25. Tickets for that are still available.

More pictures from Bowery, and video of The Julie Ruin's performance one night later on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon (aka last night), below...

Dave Hill, Phil Anselmo, a goat
Dave and Phil

Who are Bridget Everett & the Tender Moments? To quote the NY Times:

Multiply the mouthy, flesh-jiggling early Bette Midler by one hundred, give her the super-plus-size figure and fashion sense of Divine, the John Waters diva, and the manners of a Flintstone, and you've got a rough approximation of Bridget Everett, the alt-cabaret star who roared around the stage of Joe's Pub...
That's a review from a recent Joe's Pub show and if you missed it, you have three more chances including tonight (7/31).

Who are the Tender Moments? Well, they would be Bridgett's band members: Mike Jackson on guitar; Adam Horovitz, a k a Ad-Rock of the Beastie Boys, on bass; Matt Ray on piano; and Carmine Covelli on drums. The bassist needs no introduction. You might recognize some of the other names from Ad-Rock's wife Kathleen Hanna's new band The Julie Ruin (who announced a small show of their own today).

What does Dave Hill have to do with this? He also happens to be a regular guest at Bridgett Everett shows! He joined them at their last two Joe's Pub gigs and will do so again tonight. He'll also join the Tender Moments on stage at Outside Lands in San Francisco on Saturday, August 10th. It's one of three performances Dave is doing at the California fest on The Barbary stage, and only part of his whole Outside Lands itinerary which also includes hosting the SoundWave stage with us like he did at Firefly Fest (but won't be doing at Lollapalooza).

Why is Dave Hill pictured with Phil Anselmo and a goat on the top of this post? Because Phil (when not promoting a new music project) and Dave (when not investigating the royal baby) are currently filming a new sure-to-be both metal and hilarious online series for Adult Swim! it's called Metal Grasshopper and it will premiere later this year!

Where can I meanwhile see Dave Hill rock out? As mentioned, you can catch him at Joe's Pub, but for a more proper Dave Hill rock show, head to Mercury Lounge on Friday night (8/2) where his band rock band Valley Lodge will be performing. You can listen to their power pop hits at Soundcloud.

P.S. Paperback lovers take note: Dave's book "Tasteful Nudes" comes out as a paperback on Sept 3.

Another glorious pic of Dave and Phil and Phil Anselmo tour dates, below...

Portlandia
Portlandia

Initially announced in November with more dates added in January, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein have been bringing their funny/offensive IFC show Portlandia to live stages across the country over the past month. They started at the end of December with shows in Portland, Seattle and San Francisco (where Thao & Mirah joined them for a song). January's run started in LA, continued to Chicago (where guests included Jeff Tweedy's kids), and then hit NYC for two shows: 1/20 @ Music Hall of Williamsburg (pictures in this post) and 1/21 @ Bowery Ballroom (pictures HERE).

The Brooklyn show, pictured here, included special guests Adam Horovitz (aka Beastie Boy Ad-Rock) and Hugh Cornwell. The live band included Carrie's Wild Flag bandmate Rebecca Cole.

Wild Flag were all in the audience at the same venue just over a month earlier to see Eleanor Friendberger perform. Eleanor opened for Wild Flag on their October tour, and is joining Portlandia on their February run of dates that kick off 2/19 at the Trocadero in Philadelphia. All dates and more pictures from the Brooklyn Portlandia show, below...
