Aesop Rock in Austin in 2012 (more by Tim Griffin)
Bang On A Can's David Lang is the 2013-2014 season's holder of the Richard and Barbara Debs Composer's Chair at Carnegie Hall, and for the season, he'll be presenting his collected stories series. On the series, David says:
My series--collected stories--divides up the narrative world into topics so we can see how the music changes from subject to subject. Music from different cultures, times, environments, and sound worlds, plus some really exciting commissions, are placed next to each other, highlighting their narrative similarities and telling a larger kind of story about how we listen, experience sound and time, and use music to make sense of the world around us.The series includes a number of shows throughout the year, notably 'collected stories: love/loss' on April 24 with The Uncluded (aka Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson), Sam Amidon, Nico Muhly, Nadia Sirota and others (tickets); 'collected stories: (post)folk' on April 27 with guitar great Kaki King, the Alarm Will Sound ensemble, and others (tickets); and 'collected stories: spirit' on April 23 with Tuvan throat singers Huun-Huur-Tu and others (tickets). Full collected stories schedule below.
Speaking of Kaki King, she also plays the New York Guitar Festival this month.
And speaking of Bang On A Can, BOAC's marching band Asphalt Orchestra is performing the Pixies' Surfer Rosa in NYC at Le Poisson Rouge on Sunday (1/12). Tickets for that show are on sale now.

As mentioned, collaborators Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson have teamed up under the name The Uncluded to release an album and tour. The album, Hokey Fright, comes out on May 7 via Rhymesayers, and you can now stream it in full ahead of its release date at The Current.
Their tour comes to NYC for a previously discussed show on June 1 at Knitting Factory. Tickets for that show weren't on sale when we last spoke, but they're on sale now. It's also since been announced that Hamell On Trial will open the show.
Aesop Rock's pal El-P also has a new duo, Run the Jewels with Killer Mike. As we just posted, they'll be releasing a free album this June and going on a tour which hits NYC on August at 14 Webster Hall.
All Uncluded dates are listed, along with two videos, below...
Aesop Rock at Coachella 2013 (more by Wei Shi)

The duo are teaming up under the name The Uncluded, and the album, which is called Hokey Fright, will be out on May 7 via Rhymesayers. It features James McNew of Yo La Tengo on one of the tracks. You can watch the videos for its singles, "Earthquake" and "Delicate Cycle," along with the album art and tracklist, below.
The Uncluded will be supporting their forthcoming album with a tour of the US and Canada from late May into early August (via Pitchfork). That tour hits NYC on June 1 at Knitting Factory. TIckets for that show are not on sale yet but check Ticketweb for updates.

Passion Pit / Alt-J / Purity Ring & Danny Brown / crowd
Coachella 2013 is currently going down in Indio, CA for its second weekend after kicking off this past Friday (4/19). We've already posted pics of day 1 (HERE and HERE), day 2 (HERE) and day 3 (HERE) from weekend 1, and now we've got pictures of day 1 from weekend 2 in this post. This time around we caught sets by Passion Pit, Earl Sweatshirt, Polica, Youth Lagoon, Purity Ring, (who were joined by Danny Brown, whose new album they appear on), Foals, Modest Mouse, Alt-J and more.
Check out more pictures from 4/19, along with a "Coachellavated" video of the festival filmed from the top of director Chris Crutchfield's head and a video of Passion Pit's full set from weekend 1, below...
Stone Roses / How to Destroy Angels / Johnny Marr
Friday's lineup was teeming with such line-jumpers, performing with various degrees of laurel-resting. Early in the day came the Shouting Matches, a shambolic blues-esque outfit whose sales pitch is that it includes Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. The group took almost a half-hour for sound check, and its set was almost as loose. Mr. Vernon, such a precise and processed singer in Bon Iver, was here far more at ease, pushing his vocals no harder than the amiable songs demanded. There was also Divine Fits (Britt Daniel of Spoon + Dan from Wolf Parade), Deathfix (Brendan Canty of Fugazi on drums), Grinderman with Nick Cave, Johnny Marr of the Smiths, Trent Reznor of NIN in How to Destroy Angels (who made their live debut days earlier), Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys with his band The Guantanamo School of Medicine, and more. And of course reunions and britrock galore with Blur, The Stone Roses, Sparks, and Jurassic 5 all also playing Friday. Here are our pictures from day one (which do not include Polica, but check out our instagram for a shot of Justin Vernon joining them on stage).
Later, in the dance-centric Sahara tent, Dog Blood performed a loud but not thunderous set. It's a collaborative project of Skrillex and Boys Noize, and does not quite live up to Skrillex's typical punishment or Boys Noize's characteristic exuberance.

Aesop Rock in Austin in 2012 (more by Tim Griffin)
Hip hop producer RJD2, who was last in NYC for a New Year's Eve show, will be playing a few US shows this month, including a return to NYC this Saturday (2/9) at Brooklyn Bowl. Tickets for the Brooklyn show are on sale now. All RJD2 dates are listed below.
That show is the same day that fellow Def Jux associate Aesop Rock plays his previously discussed NYC show at Irving Plaza (2/9), which is part of his tour with Rob Sonic, DJ Big Wiz, and Busdriver. Tickets for the NYC show are still available. He recently had to postpone some dates on that tour due to a broken rib, but he's since recovered and has rescheduled those shows. An updated list of his upcoming dates is below. Aesop is also one of the few rappers playing Coachella.
In related news, Illogic (who is a member of Greenhouse Effect along with Blueprint, who is a member of Soul Position along with RJD2) and Blockhead (who has contributed production to much of Aesop Rock's discography) are set to release their first collaborative album, Capture The Sun, on April 16 via Man Bites Dog Records. The album will feature guest spots from Slug, Blueprint, and Abstract Rude. The album art is below. The duo haven't released any music from the album yet, but Illogic did upload two free EPs to his bandcamp that he did with Blockhead to "prepare for Capture." You can stream both EPs below or download them at bandcamp (name your price).
All lists of dates, album art, and streams below...
We briefly mentioned in our post of bands reuniting at Coachella 2013, LA hip hop collective Jurassic 5 are reuniting after breaking up in 2007 (one year after the release of their fourth album, Feedback). There's no insight yet as to whether or not this reunion will go beyond the Coachella slot but fingers crossed! They play on the Fridays (April 12 and 19).
Another big one on the lineup is Wu-Tang Clan, who play the Sundays of the festival (April 14 and 21). This one's not exactly a "reunion," like Jurassic 5 is, but it's worth noting that while Wu-Tang Clan members play shows a lot, it's not every day that they all join forces on stage.
Other rappers at the festival include Aesop Rock and Earl Sweatshirt on the Fridays, and El-P, Pusha T, Action Bronson, Danny Brown, 2 Chainz, and Theophilus London on the Saturdays. R&B singer Janelle Monae also plays on the Saturdays.

As mentioned, Aesop Rock was set to kick off a tour this month, which included some rescheduled dates that he had to cancel due to Hurricane Sandy. Now, he's unfortunately had to cancel some shows again, this time due to a broken rib. However, his East Coast shows in February, including the NYC show on February 9 at Irving Plaza, are still on. Tickets for the NYC show are still available.
Support on the tour comes from Rob Sonic, DJ Big Wiz, and Busdriver. A list of all cancelled dates and another list of all remaining ones, along with the video for "Cycles to Gehenna," are below. We hope you have a quick recovery, Aesop!

Aesop Rock in Austin in August (more by Tim Griffin)
Aesop Rock released one of the best (and by the looks of these year end lists, apparently underrated) hip hop albums of the year with Skelethon, his first solo release since 2007's None Shall Pass and easily his strongest since at least 2003's Bazooka Tooth. He supported that record with a tour which did make it to NYC, but had to be cut short due to Hurricane Sandy. He's rescheduled dates in many of the cities he cancelled on his recently-announced 2013 tour, which also hits NYC for a show on February 9 at Irving Plaza. The tour is with Rob Sonic, DJ Big Wiz, and Busdriver. Tickets for the Irving Plaza show are on sale now.
In honor of the new year, Aesop Rock revealed a previously unreleased song from the Blockhead-produced days around year 2000. The track is called "Hall of Game" and you can download it for free, plus check out a list of all tour dates, below.
Aesop Rock in Austin, August 2012 (more by Tim Griffin)
More Hurricane Sandy concert cancellations, though this doesn't affect a New York show, bad news from Aesop Rock:
***After consulting with venues, agents, managers, promoters, etc - due to the weather emergency, tonight will be the last show of this tour.A list of affected tour dates are below, and you can check out pics of Aesop Rock's show at Austin's Mohowk from back in August here.
We WILL play NC tonight, but VA, MD, MA, VT, RI, CT are going to be postponed. Check the venue sites for updates.
We don't know if we could make it to the cities, or make it out, or if y'all could make it to the shows. As is - some of us can't get home.***
In happier Rhymesayers hip hop news, we're glad to report that P.O.S.'s kidney transplant fund has exceeded its $25,000 goal and you can still donate to help. The emergency transplant forced the rapper to cancel his fall tour which would've hit Irving Plaza on November 7.

Baroness at Terminal 5 in May (more by Joe McCabe)
Earlier this week, we posted an update from Baroness showing that things were looking upwards for the band. Unfortunately though, with two members having broken vertebrae and frontman John Baizely having a broken arm and leg, it doesn't come as much of a surprise that Baroness have in fact cancelled some of their upcoming North American tour dates, including their NYC show at House of Vans and LA's FYF Fest. They will not be replaced on the House of Vans lineup, which happens on August 29 and now just includes Turbonegro, Doomriders, and Nightbirds. This is a bummer but it makes sense that the band takes the time they need to recover, and we wish them a speedy and successful recovery!
Meanwhile, FYF Fest, which Wild Flag also dropped off of, recently expanded its lineup. It now features The Faint (who just announced they'll be reissuing Danse Macabre and touring the album), Glass Candy, King Tuff, and newcomers The Orwells. Tickets for FYF Fest are still available. The updated lineup and flier are below.

Aesop Rock at McCarren Pool in 2008 (more by Jason Bergman)
Homeboy Sandman is set to release his first full length album on Stones Throw, First Of A Living Breed, which is due out on the label on September 18. The first single, "Watchu Want From Me," was produced by Oddisee and you can download it above or stream it below. The cover art and tracklist are below too.
Homeboy Sandman will be supporting the album on a tour with Brother Ali that hits NYC on September 27 at Bowery Ballroom (tickets), but before that both he and Oddisee will play a FREE day show in NYC TODAY (8/2) at Public Assembly with Immortal Technique and Tru Fam for a Last.fm filming. Doors are at 2 PM, the show is completely free and open to the public, no guest list.
If you stick around the Brooklyn venue, there will also be a hip hop DJ dance party at Public Assembly tonight (8/2) with Da Beatminerz and X-Ecutioners. Tickets for tonight's show are available.
In addition to those two Public Assembly shows, there's tons of other good hip hop shows going down in NYC tonight and this weekend. JSpace.com is throwing 'The Ultimate College Bar Mitzvah" at Highline Ballroom tonight (8/2) with sets from Talib Kweli, The Higher Concept, and The Rooks. It's a bit of an unusual show though. Highline's site reads, "This is THE event for all interns and college students in the New York area. Rock your college swag, bust some moves, and come ready to have a great time. From 8-9PM, professionals from large corporations will work the room, looking to meet college students." Tickets for the show are available.
Tonight's Bowl Train at Brooklyn Bowl (8/2), which is usually DJed by Questlove, will instead by DJed by Biz Markie. Tickets are available.
Nina Sky have a new album/mixtape out this week (7/31) called Nicole and Natalie (the actual first names of the twins that make up the duo), which you can download in full above or stream below. The track "Comatose" was produced by Brenmar, who Nina Sky will share a bill with in NYC tonight (8/2) at the Studio at Webster Hall. Chippy Nonstop, Roxy Cottontail, and Ferrari Snowday are on the bill too. TIckets for that show are available.
Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q's tour supporting Wiz Khalifa hits Jones Beach tonight (8/2). Tickets for that are still available. As mentioned, Kendrick will return to NYC on his tour which hits Terminal 5 on September 15 and Schoolboy Q will when his tour with A$AP Rocky and Danny Brown hits NYC on September 27 at Roseland Ballroom. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (8/3) at 10 AM.
Aesop Rock, whose new album Skelethon is at least his best since Bazooka Tooth and one of the contenders for rap album of the year, is currently supporting that album on a previously discussed tour with Rob Sonic, DJ Big Wiz, Edison, and Dark Time Sunshine which hits NYC this Friday (8/3) at Irving Plaza. Tickets for that show are still available. Dark Time Sunshine also just released a new album, ANX, which features Aesop Rock, P.O.S., Busdriver, and others. You can stream that album in full below.
Ghostface will play his own show in Clifton Park, NY on September 14 at Upstate Concert Hall. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
In other Wu-Tang news, Inspectah Deck will play NYC on August 24 at BB King's with Colt Seavers. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
We also just mentioned that GZA will be touring later this year with Killer Mike, Sweet Valley (aka Nathan from Wavves' new beat project), and Bear Hands. That tour hits NYC on October 18 at Irving Plaza.
Q-Tip's next Offline Party at Irving Plaza happens on August 17. Tickets for that are available.
Beanie Sigel plays S.O.B.'s on August 16 with KA. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Blockhead (left) with Aesop Rock
Blockhead (born Anthony "Tony" Simon) is an American Hip hop producer based in Manhattan, New York. Aside from his solo efforts released on the Ninja Tune label, he is most associated with producing for Aesop Rock, a rapper for the Definitive Jux independent hip hop label. He has also previously worked with rappers Mac Lethal, S.A. Smash, Slug, and Murs, and is also a member of the hip hop/comedy group Party Fun Action Committee.Along with RJD2 and Mr El-Producto himself (aka El-P), Blockhead has long been one of my favorite producers out of the extra thick Def Jux stable. More than just Aesop Rock's go-to, the NYC beathead has produced a few LPs of his own as well, including the recently released The Music Scene out NOW on Ninja Tune Recordings. Cop it, and cop one of the songs from the LP above.
