Afghan Whigs

After the reunited Afghan Whigs announced they were coming back for ATP, followed by the news that they'd be playing Lollpalooza this year after a string of European dates, the band announced a big October 5th NYC show at Terminal 5 to which tickets are still available.

But the band just announced that their first show in 13 years will happen at Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday, May 23, one night after they appear on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. Tickets go on sale Friday, May 11 at noon though a "Fanclub presale" starts Wednesday at 10am (password: whigsnyc). Joseph Arthur opens.

Lollapalooza (more by Grant MacAllister)
Lolla

Chicago Sun Times reports:

Lollapalooza has revealed its official 2012 list of performers -- a typically wide-ranging smorgasbord of genres and styles topped by nearly a dozen mainstage headliners: the Red Hot Chili Peppers, freshly reunited bands Black Sabbath and At the Drive-In, the Black Keys, Jack White, Florence + The Machine, the Shins and Passion Pit, plus spotlighted electronic music including Swedish house titan Avicii, French dance duo Justice and DJ-producer Bassnectar.

The annual music festival is scheduled for Aug. 3-5 in Chicago's Grant Park.

Rumored lineups have circulated widely, as they usually do, and Lollapalooza itself stoked the speculation in recent weeks via a series of CTA and online advertisements that seemed to hint at who would be playing.

The ads featured lyrics from such acts as Sigur Ros, Santigold, Jack White, Kimbra, Twin Shadow, the Weeknd, Bloc Party and more -- all bands that wound up on the bill.

Check out the full list below...

Afghan Whigs
ATP

They say:

ATP are very pleased to confirm our return to Asbury Park, New Jersey USA with a new I'll Be Your Mirror event, the Saturday night of which will be headlined by The Afghan Whigs (who have reunited after a 13 year hiatus) and curated by their frontman Greg Dulli. Formed in 1986, the bands career from then until 2001 saw them release six critically acclaimed albums during their career. Fusing classic rock with grunge-era distortion and a heavy soul influence, The Afghan Whigs were one of the most renowned live bands of their time and ATP is excited to be a part of this long awaited reformation.

We are also very excited to present Grammy Award winner LOUIS C.K. (handpicked by Greg Dulli) who will be making a rare festival appearance, the fantastic THE ROOTS, JOSE GONZALEZ, a show from the reformed THE MAKE-UP and many others, see below for full line-up confirmed so far.

After previous years in upstate New York, ATP moved to the iconic Asbury Park waterfront in 2011 for a hugely successful I'll Be Your Mirror event co-curated and headlined by Portishead, and we are very happy to return to this very special location in September. The Convention Hall has seen the likes of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Doors and Rolling Stones grace its stage and the Paramount Theatre has welcomed stars such as Tony Bennett who often insists on playing a song with all the electrics turned off to demonstrate the amazing acoustics of the room. Once again the ATP experience will be taking over the boardwalk, with the main shows taking place at the Convention Hall and Paramount Theatre, and other events happening at the Berkeley hotel (former home of Johnny Cash).

As well as the live music line-up of 35+ acts across the weekend, Friday will feature a Comedy stage, and we're very pleased to announce that our friends at The Criterion Collection will return to run the Cinema across the weekend. All three days feature DJs and other activities to be confirmed in the months ahead. Performances take place indoors with great soundsystems, so you have no need to worry about the weather, and Asbury Park is easily accessible via public transport from nearby cities.
Tickets, which were slightly delayed from original estimates, go on sale Monday at 10am (but are on PRESALE NOW). Initial lineup below...

Greg Dulli of The Afghan Whigs (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
Twilight Singers

On Sunday 27th May 2012 Alexandra Palace will host the first show in 13 years from Cincinnati's rock legends THE AFGHAN WHIGS. Formed in 1986, the bands career from then until 2001 saw them release six acclaimed albums highlighted by the classic Gentlemen LP in 1993. Fusing classic rock with grunge-era distortion and a heavy soul influence, Afghan Whigs were one of the most renowned live bands of their time and this long awaited reformation will no doubt be a very special event.

ATP are also pleased to confirm their return to Asbury Park, New Jersey USA where they will follow last year's debut in that city with a 2012 I'll Be Your Mirror event, the Saturday night of which will be headlined by The Afghan Whigs and curated by the Whigs' frontman Greg Dulli.

The second year of ATP I'll Be Your Mirror in Asbury Park will take place September 21st-23rd...

Afghan WhigsI am usually not a fan of compilations or career retrospectives, but the Afghan Whigs': Unbreakable: A Retrospective 1990-2006 is my most anticipated release of the week. Hands down, the Afghan Whigs are the most dynamic live bad I have ever seen, and I am first in line to pick up any Greg Dulli-related release.

Other releases I can strongly recommend this week include Architecture in Helsinki's single Heart It Races (single), Carina Round's Slow Motion Addict, Get Him Eat Him's Arms Down, Hallelujah the Hills' Collective Psychosis Begone, Long Blondes' Someone To Drive You Home, The Ladybug Transistor's Can't Wait Another Day, Moviola's Dead Knowledge, Pelican's City of Echoes, and Pissed Jeans' Hope for the Men.

Plenty of reissues are out this week, including the Pretenders' Get Close and Learning to Crawl (both remastered), David Bowie's The Best Of 1980-1987 and Young Americans (both remastered), and the Beach Boys' Live at Knebworth.

What new releases can you recommend this week?
