Roger Miret w/ Agnostic Front at Power of the Riff 2012 (more by Greg Cristman)

We were just talking about Brooklyn's The So So Glos, who released their pop punk-y new album, Blowout, performed on Letterman, and are currently on tour with Titus Andronicus. That tour doesn't hit NYC (Titus plays a free NYC show in August though), but we said it probably wouldn't be long before The So So Glos announce their own NYC show. Well, they've just announced one and it happens right after that tour on May 26 at Knitting Factory with Heaven's Gate, Dinowalrus, and Trabajo. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (5/10) at 10 AM.
The So So Glos are also set to play a Northside show in the back room of Public Assembly on June 14 (only the front room will be closed) with Shapes and Le Rug. Tickets for that show are on sale now and Northside badges will also be accepted. Updated dates are listed below.
The Knitting Factory recently announced some other cool punk shows happening there soon too. Oregon Americana punks Larry and His Flask, who we wrote about when they released their Hobo's Lament EP and toured with Frank Turner, are releasing a new full length, By The Lamplight, on June 25 via Cascadian Records in the US and Frank Turner's Xtra Mile Records internationally. They'll support that album with a tour that ends on July 28 at Knitting Factory. Tickets for that show are on sale now. All dates are listed below.
Their pal Frank Turner meanwhile, will be on his own tour that hits NYC for two sold out MHOW shows in July. He just released a new video from his new album, Tape Deck Heart, which you can watch below.
Back to Knitting Factory shows: Agnostic Front frontman Roger Miret will bring his street punk band Roger Miret and the Disasters to Knitting Factory on August 24 with another Agnostic Front-related project, Stigma. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
As mentioned, Avail frontman Tim Barry will hit Knitting Factory on July 20 with Cory Branan and Des Ark. Tickets for that show are still available.
Other upcoming punk shows at Knitting Factory include power pop punks Cheap Girls (whose tour includes other NYC-area shows too) on May 17 (tickets) and post-hardcore rippers Coliseum on May 21 with the Dischord-signed Red Hare (mems. Bluetip, Dag Nasty, Swiz, Garden Variety, and more) (tickets).
All So So Glos and Larry and His Flask dates are listed, along with some videos, below...

Pentagram / Agnostic Front at Warsaw 9/1/2012

Saturday built upward from Alpha & Omega and Xibalba, young hardcore bands from California; the crowd endured Hoax, from western Massachusetts, a band with only a couple of EPs, whose volatile singer came down from the stage to the floor, inviting physical aggression and getting it. And the lineup worked toward the clomping meat-and-potatoes, early-'80s hardcore of Negative Approach -- established in Detroit 1981, reformed in 2006 -- and Agnostic Front, established in 1980, reformed in 1997, from New York and don't you forget it.Saturday (9/1) was the first night of the two-day Power of The Riff East extravaganza, filling up Warsaw with a mix of doom enthusiasts (there to see Pentagram perform all of Relentless), old school hardcore kids and others who like it loud. Pictures, setlists and video from the show are below.Agnostic Front's set was the hometown party: beefy guys from the old days at CBGB came out to support the band as it played uniformly streamlined versions of songs from the ratty old records "United Blood," "Victim in Pain" and "Cause for Alarm," responding to calls for circular mosh pits, pumping their fists to the generalized anti-authority chants: "We gotta stick together/and fight 'em all now!" And then many of them cleared out, leaving a sparser crowd for Pentagram, the early doom-metal band from Virginia whose prematurely ancient singer, Bobby Liebling, persists with effort. -[NY Times]

Agnostic Front @ Santos Party House

Agnostic Front are currently out on tour with Mongoloids in support of a somewhat new record...
"My Life My Way was released on March 22, 2011. The album features 13 new powerful and anthemic songs laid down by Erik Rutan (MADBALL, GOATWHORE, CANNIBAL CORPSE, etc.) at his Mana Recording Studio in Tampa, FL under the watchful guide of producer Freddy Cricien of MADBALL. The record was mastered by Alan Douches (NILE, MASTODON, etc.)."The tour hit Santos Party House in NYC on 11/4. Some pictures are in this post. More them with all remaining dates below.
Fellow DMS crew band H2O also has a new record coming out, but not of their own songs. As their own press release reads...
"H2O has been a mainstay in hardcore and punk since their inception back in 1995 and have had many influences along the way. The band is thrilled to pay homage to those influential artists by covering their songs on the forthcoming album, Don't Forget Your Roots, which will be available November 15th from Bridge Nine Records. No Agnostic Front on the tribute album, but there is Madball, Descendents, Bad Brains and many more. The full tracklist, all tour dates, and more Agnostic Front show pictures, below...Additionally, H2O will be playing the Gramercy Theater on November 19th [with Killing Time], with a special set consisting of cover songs and originals- both new and old. This show will be a celebration of H2O's covers album available just three days prior, as well as a re-release of their self-titled album, available on LP also on November 15th. Vocalist Toby Morse had this to say: "NYC is H2O's roots - where we started - and couldn't think of a more perfect place to release our covers album and the re-issue of our first record. We'll be playing old songs, new songs and cover songs for our fans there! They'll also be able to pick up copies of our self-titled album on vinyl - Bridge Nine is re-pressing that and we couldn't be more excited. It was originally released back in 1996 and has been out of print for a long, long time. Also Don't Forget Your Roots will be available as well!" He continued, "Our covers album is a big personal accomplishment for us - being able to pay homage to the bands that have influenced us so much since we got into punk rock and helped get us where we are today is an amazing thing. We think we've done them justice!"

Agnostic Front @ Webster Hall

While I was checking out the brutality at Maryland Deathfest 2011 back in May (pictures from day 1 HERE, day 2 HERE, day 3 HERE, and day 4 HERE), NYC was keeping it brutal in their own way, with the 2011 edition of the Black & Blue Bowl. The show featured a headlining set from a reunited Gorilla Biscuits. We already posted those pictures, but there was also sets by Agnostic Front, Sick of It All, Terror, Absolution, Antidote, Maximum Penalty, Backtrack, Down To Nothing, No Turning Back, Take Offense, and Bottom Out. It was a serious bill for the NYHC faithful. More pictures and video from the mayhem lie below.
In semi-related news, Cro-Mags have a show coming up with Fucked Up at House of Vans. Cro-Mags played Bowery Ballroom on July 1st.
In more related news, Roger Miret (of Agnostic Front) will hit the road for a string of dates with Roger Miret and The Disasters. The week long trek is in support of the new LP Gotta Get Up Now and will include a stop at Trash Bar on August 19th. Full tour schedule is below.

Agnostic Front @ Santos Party House

Agnostic Front headlined Santos on 10/16 as part of their Victim In Pain anniversary tour, the same occasion that brought them to The Bell House in late February. Inhuman, Mother of Mercy, Product of Waste, and Our Gang supported the NYHC legends, and along with the standard post-stage-dive bruising, pit scarring, and hurt feelings, the show went off without a hitch. Unlike the DC9 show in Washington DC just days earlier:
Hardcore punk band Agnostic Front played at nightclub DC9 on October 14 as part of their "Victim in Pain Tour." The title of their tour would take on dark irony at about 2:30 a.m., when, following their performance, police found Ali Ahmed Mohammed splayed on the sidewalk just down the street. Five men who work at DC9 are accused of putting him there, after Mohammed threw a brick through one of DC9's windows. Metropolitan Police chief Cathy Lanier called the alleged violence "savage" and "vigilante justice."Shitty. More details on the investigation as they arise. More pictures from the NYC Show are below......[Skip Coburn of the D.C. Nightlife Association is] careful to say everyone will have to wait for the facts to emerge, but Coburn repeats some of the rumors that have circulated within the pro-DC9 crowd: That the five men who chased Mohammed--Spieler and employees Darryl Carter, Reginald Phillips, Evan Preller, and Arthur Zaloga--after he shattered the club's window in retaliation for not being let in had merely tackled him. That they let him go after, and Mohammed walked away unharmed. That police arrived on the scene to arrest a conscious and alert Mohammed who somehow, later on, died in police custody. And, most importantly, that a recording of a 911 call placed to police that night would exonerate the defendants. The defendants' attorneys also say their clients are innocent of the charges the police originally made, and that once the facts are out, that'll be clear to everyone.
But a police source involved in the investigation into Mohammed's death says those rumors are likely wishful thoughts on the part of DC9 fans. (The source spoke on condition of anonymity because he's not authorized to talk publicly about the case.) He says it's unlikely that Mohammed died merely of a tackle, and that he would bet that a least one of the five arrested will face murder charges. He also claims, as do recently filed charging documents, that the first officer on the scene began administering CPR to Mohammed... -[Washington City Paper]

Agnostic Front @ The Bell House in March (more by Tod Seelie)

The previously-mentioned Agnostic Front / Mother of Mercy / New Lions / New Lows Product of Waste show taking place at Santos Party House on October 16th will be the end of a 2+ week tour for the three bands that kicks off September 30th at Popeye's Pub in Peekskill, NY. Tickets for the NYC date are still on sale.
Tickets are also now on sale for another upcoming NYHC show, one happening in pretty much the biggest venue possible for a hardcore show. I'm talking about November 14th at Terminal 5 when The Cro-Mags and Underdog open for Suicidal Tendencies who are playing the show as part of a larger tour. By the way, Cro-Mags are now being billed as "Cro-Mags" and not "Cro-Mags NYC" as they were at first. Drama.

Mother of Mercy in Warren, NJ

Agnostic Front will Victim In Pain it up once again, this time at Santos Party House on Oct 16th with a much younger cast of characters: Mother of Mercy, New Lows, and more. Tickets are on sale. The show looks to be part of a larger tour for the trio, though only four dates have surfaced so far.
Mother of Mercy are currently on the way to Chaos in Tejas, the monlithic hardcore/indie/metal/punk/all-of-the-above festival in Austin THIS WEEKEND (May 28th). The band recently played Warren American Legion in Warren, NJ alongside Foundation, Backtrack and Swamp Thing; pictures of that show adorn this post.
Foundation and Backtrack recently announced that will be back in our area when they team up with Terror for a string of dates that include Long Island and Clifton, NJ on July 2nd and 3rd respectively.

World War 3 I tell ya. Agnostic Front played all of their seminal Victim in Pain with moments of United Blood and even "Gotta Go" for the new-ish schoolers at Bell House on Friday (2/26). Snowstorm be damned, it was a packed house, with a decent crowd for Ultraviolence by the time I arrived at the venue (missed Sexual Suicide), although for my money I wish I had gotten there after the following band, Urban Waste whose live show I couldn't get into despite liking their recorded output.
One of the risks you run by being an older band in a younger-skewing genre (punk, hardcore, hip hop, etc) is coming off like a nostalgia act. I have seen this happen with countless bands who don't have the energy to keep up with either the songs or the crowd (see previously mentioned bands). But for every rule there is an exception. Cro-Mags. The Jesus Lizard. De La Soul. Add Antidote and Agnostic Front to that list.
Antidote hit the stage a shade after 11PM and ripped it, playing songs from their great Thou Shalt Not Kill, as well as covers by Minor Threat ("I Don't Wanna Hear It", Filler") and Black Flag ("Rise Above"). Stage energy was met with equal crowd energy. The original matieral was furious, and covers breathed new life into those hardcore classics. Any other night, I would have been content with Antidote as a headliner.
I wish I had enough fingers and toes to count the number of times that guitarist Vinnie Stigma yelled "This is Hardcore!" during Agnostic Front's set. The vets blasted through a short, but sweet set of material that covered their early years, joined by a chorus of AF fans and Sab Grey of the legendary Iron Cross, who helped with AF's cover of "Crucified". As advertised, Stigma and vocalist Roger Miret were joined on stage by drummer Dave Jones (also Mental Abuse) and Rob Kabula for their set of Victim In Pain material, with bassist Adam Moochie and Dave Jones sitting in for the departed Raybeez for the United Blood material. Killer show, though I wish I wasnt showered in beer as much as I was that night, and I am sure Miret and some stage divers agree; too many people to count slipped and fell on that slippery stage.
Some video of Antidote and Agnostic Front, as well as a ton of pics are below...

Agnostic Front at the last CBGB Matinee (more here)

Agnostic Front's seminal debut, Victim in Pain, arguably remains the ultimate document of the New York hardcore scene - an early-'80s movement which coincided with some of the most dire social and political crises ever to afflict the metropolis. By taking the rudiments of punk, then injecting enough energy and rage to elevate them to an entirely new level of primal aggression, Agnostic Front's piece de resistance ultimately succeeds because it transcends musical art form to create protest rock not necessarily at its most lucid, but definitely at its most visceral. With 11 tracks clocking in at a mere 15 and a half minutes, ..."Blind Justice," "United and Strong," "Power," "Society Sucker," and "Your Mistake" were literal calls to arms for New York City's disenfranchised youth, who faithfully trekked down on a weekly basis to CBGB's legendary Sunday hardcore matinees. Listen closely to these cuts and you can almost hear the hallowed Bowery venue's dilapidated walls sweat, blister, and peel from the onslaught... -[Allmusic]I will wholeheartedly admit to a soft spot for Agnostic Front, and it's pretty exciting that the 25th anniversary of Victim In Pain will be the basis for a show at the Bell House on Friday, February 26th, 2010 featuring all guilty parties from that album performing at the show.
Agnostic Front will have their original 1984 lineup in tow - Roger Miret, Vinny Stigma, Rob Kabula, and Dave Jones. "We haven't played together since '84, this is the CLASSIC lineup together again doing vintage AF songs and some classics. We couldn't be more excited to do this!" said vocalist Roger Miret.Tickets
The band has also lined up a US tour in January, as well as European dates in April that lead up to their appearance at Hellfest 2010 with the reunited Godflesh.
Victim in Pain was recently reissued (on CD and vinyl) by Bridge Nine, as was the United Blood EP.
In other old school hardcore news, the Cro-Mags show at Santos on 12/29 has added Death Threat and Last Call Brawl as support, with another act TBD. Tickets are still available.

Vinnie Stigma, guitarist, hardcore monument, and philosopher extraordinaire, has gone solo from the legendary hardcore crew Agnostic Front (temporarily), releasing his debut album New York Blood as Stigma for I Scream Records. In celebration, Mr. Stigma will lead audience chants at two NYC shows including an in-store at Generation Records on Feb 26th at 7PM and a second show at The Pyramid on Ave A on March 1st. Full tour dates are below.
The record comes only a month after the release of New York Blood THE MOVIE on DVD:
The latest project from writer, director, cinematographer Nick Oddo is a criminal slice of life starring Vinnie Stigma, guitarist of the legendary hardcore band Agnostic Front. Heavily-tattooed Vinnie (Stigma) is a mid-range mobster who works the streets of Manhattan's Lower East Side with various schemes, including up-and-coming boxers, Chinatown drugs and opening a new nightclub. Vinnie's father Lorenzo (Marvin W. Schwartz), has just been released from Sing Sing after a 12 year stint, and the only thing on Pop's mind is getting revenge... The laid back, rambling script mostly follows Vinnie, and sometimes Lorenzo, throughout their daily routine, capturing the rhythms (and occasional roadbumps) in Vinnie's life, as he juggles a young son and an ex-wife with his coke snorting criminal ambitions. But while Vinnie keeps a relatively level head when it comes to crime, Lorenzo is a major psychopath who's liable to ruin everything his son has built...Stigma playing a tattooed tough guy from the LES. Hmmm. How do you suppose he prepared for that role? Trailer is below.
- [Shock Cinema]
In other AF related news, the band is currently on tour, but announced that they are on the hunt for a new drummer... contact at their MySpace if interested. Roger Miret's (AF)'s brother band, Madball, also recently added some tour dates with Reign Supreme, though none in NYC. Full AF & Madball dates are below.

Walter Schreifels @ Fun Fun Fun Fest (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)

...And the punks will say "Oi To The World"! And by punks, I mean Walter Schreifels during a FREE live set at the Punk Slope "Xmess Party" at Bar 4 (444 7th Ave @ 15th St) in Park Slope on Dec 20th (not the first time Walter played that party). The shindig kicks off at 10PM and along for the ride on the wheels of steel are Chris Daly (ex-Texas Is The Reason, 108 & Jets To Brazil), Jay Gotrian (Eye For An Eye), and Josh Grabelle (Trustkill Records).
Walter recently completed a music video for a cover of Agnostic Front's "Society Suckers" from the hardcore landmark Victim In Pain (viewable below). Why cover a classic track from a classic album? Let the man speak:
Agnostic Front vs. MozartWord. Walter and Rival Schools recently played Mercury Lounge, Irving Plaza with Bad Brains, Fun Fun Fun Fest, and the Brooklyn Vegan Day Party during CMJ on Oct 25th. Walter also recently played The Studio At Webster Hall with The International Noise Conspiracy. Read part one of our interview with Walter and Sammy from the band, and stay tuned for part two (I swear).Victim In Pain by Agnostic Front is one of my favorite records of all time, it's classical music. If you don't know this album I highly recommend that you get familiar with it. Don't be scared away by the misleading artwork, although that's part of the album's "Power" (title of a song on VIP) AF's music fights against fascism and the attitudes of fascists ("Fascist Attitudes")
I think cavemen would have liked Victim In Pain better than anything Mozart ever came up with, or the Beatles. If you had to get psyched up to kill a Wooly Mammoth, would you listen to The Beatles with Sgt. Pepper on french horn or Victim In Pain with Vinny Stigma on lead? I can almost hear the cave men screaming (if they had developed language) STIGMA!!!
It's timeless music, post apocalypse Mad Max people will be rocking to it in a thousand years. Do you think anyone is gonna give a shit about The Shins when you could be raped, lit on fire, dragged by a motorcycle and killed for a liter of gas (which kind of defeats the purpose)? Shit, Apes from Planet Of The Apes would love AF, though the Chimps and Orangutans maybe not as much.
Anyhoo, it's not a music competition, I like The Shins and there is a place for them too but I think that Victim In Pain is more important and unique in the evolution of music, art, mankind, that it goes beyond indie rock and steps into Smithsonian Institute territory.
For that reason I covered AF's "Society Suckers" from Victim In Pain. My version doesn't approach the aggressive power of the original but I had fun interpreting it, an homage. I think of it as classic folk song like "This Land Is Your Land", I wish Woody Guthrie would do a version in the time/space continuum. -Walter

Cro-Mags (jam) @ Fun Fun Fun Fest (more by Tyler Nutter)

Knitting Factory closes its Tribeca location for good on New Years Eve. I think that's one of the reasons so many good shows are starting to pop up there, one of which is the Anticon anniversary party on December 18th, and another of which is the Cro-Mags (jam) show happening in the main space of the club on December 28th...

Agnostic Front @ Knitting Factory, 8/21/08 (hardcoreshutterbug)

Hardcore is always screaming about unity, and in times like these, it's admirable that those aren't empty threats. A gang of NYHC bands have teamed up for a benefit for two of their own, Dr. Tom and Walter "Monsta" Ryan of Subzero and Merauder who has liver cancer. NYHC legends Sick Of It All, Cro-Mags (jam), Murphy's Law, Maximum Penalty, Subzero, Jasta (aka Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed) and many others are playing a benefit show at Studio B (we'll let you know if that venue changes) on 9/27. Tickets are on sale, check out the flyer down below. If you can't make the show, there are two other ways you can help..... buy yourself a CD and/or sign up for a free website.
What the hell is a Cro-Mags (jam) anyway? No, it isn't Trey Anastasio playing a 25 minute version of "We Gotta Know" nor is it the latest concoction from Smuckers..... Cro-Mags (jam) is the throat of Village Voice cover star John Joseph with a crew of "No-Mags" providing the soundtrack (aka John is the only original member in the group. The other original members have toured as just "Cro-Mags") . The jam band is also on board for this year's Fun Fun Fun Fest along with ALL (who recently reunited), Dead Milkmen (who also reunited), Flipper, Adolescents, Integrity, Young Widows, Trash Talk, Walter Schriefels, Bad Brains, Bouncing Souls and many many many others.
Bad Brains are also playing a NYC show. It's at Irving Plaza on November 6th and tickets are still on sale.
Bouncing Souls AND Sick Of It All are also playing a NYC show, together, at Terminal 5, with Grey Area. Tickets are still available.
In possibly-related, possibly-NYHC news, Vision Of Disorder will put up their dukes with Indecision, Overcast, and Nassau Chainsaw on Nov 16th at Irving Plaza. Who is Nassau Chainsaw, you ask? NC is a collective of musicians from two very different NYHC bands, Neck and Locked in a Vacancy. Tim Williams (VOD), Sal Lococo (Sworn Enemy), and Mike D(Car Bomb) all lend vocals to their album. VOD's Dead in NY DVD is due on November 11th on Koch. Tickets go on sale 8/30 at noon. VOD's last reunion show was at the Crazy Donkey in Farmingdale. This will be their first NYC show in a while.
As we mentioned a couple weeks ago, the original line-up of Biohazard is playing Irving Plaza on Oct 5th. Tickets are on sale. The band recently did the same thing at L'Amours (which is now in Staten Island).
Absolution have also scheduled a second reunion date at ABC No Rio on 10/25, this time with Starkweather.
Walter Schriefels recently reunited with Rival Schools and is playing Maxwell's and Mercury Lounge as well as touring. Mercury Lounge is sold out, but Maxwell's isnt.
Subzero recently opened up for Body Count.

Sunday night (July 13th) at their BB King's show, Strong Island's own Suffocation confirmed it's participation in Carcass's "Exhume To Consume" tour (as we reported earlier). So let's recount, shall we? That makes Carcass, Suffocation, Necrophagist, & Aborted, but there are also rumors circulating that Rotten Sound (who still haven't confirmed) and 1349 are on board as well, bolstered by Sonar's (a club in Baltimore, MD) advertisement for "Carcass, 1349, Aborted, Rotten Sound, and special guest TBA". Considering that Necrophagist & Aborted have been confirmed for the tour, that should round out the lineup. We'll keep you posted, but just the thought of Carcass, 1349, Suffocation AND Rotten Sound... yikes. Sounds awesome.
Early Man have announced that they have signed with The End and will release a new EP this fall produced by Jack Endino! Early Man is currently on the road with Valient Thorr and are scheduled to hit the Bowery with Monotonix on July 25th. Tickets are still available. Tour mates Skeletonwitch have added a few headlining dates around the Early Man tour, including one at the Knitting Factory on July 26th with the mighty Titan and Krallice. Tickets are on sale. More Skeletonwitch headlining dates below. Skeletonwitch hits the road this fall on the Blackest Of The Black tour. Also available over at Metalkult, footage from their April show at BB Kings.
The mayhem-inducing Gaza have announced they will head into the studio, "hoping" to have their new record out in October. Gaza released their last record, the critically acclaimed I Don't Care Where I Go When I Die in 2006. Me = stoked.
