In honor of Shark Week on The Discovery Channel: metal album covers featuring sharks. We compiled the same list and added some more. There's two by M.O.D. (who are active lately) including the one above. Check out the rest below...
This does not include shark-featuring album covers in other genres, like Ride's "Vapour Trail" single, Gallows' In the Belly of a Shark EP, or Great White's discography (which, admittedly, has some spectacular (ly awful) shark-featuring covers). I feel like I'm missing an obvious one or three. If you know, care to share?

In other metal book news, a new Slayer biography has emerged, titled Slayer 66 2/3: The Jeff & Dave Years. A Metal Band Biography. The book was written by DX Herris, who previously has written about Slayer in his 33 1/3 series entry, Slayer's Reign in Blood. The book clocks in at a whopping 628 and here's a description:
This timely rock biography answers burning questions, shatters popular myths, and uncovers new truths about Slayer, the iconic group that became the embodiment of heavy metal. This full-length, exhaustively researched account of the thrash kings' career recaps and reevaluates the years guitar hero Jeff Hanneman and drum legend Dave Lombardo were in the group. Over the course of 59 chapters, 400 footnotes and three appendices, it profiles the members and presents dramatic scenes from 32 years in the Abyss: A fresh look at the group's early days. Reign in Blood tours. A European invasion. The Palladium riot. The seat cushion chaos concert. Newly unearthed details from Lombardo's turbulent history with the band. Historical artwork and photos never seen in public before. The entire diabolical discography. Hanneman's hard times. The Big Four's big year. Lombardo's final exit...And a lot more -- sounds pretty thorough. It's currently available in an interactive e-book edition for... $6.66.
Slayer recently rolled through Madison Square Garden with Gojira on their first tour since the passing of Jeff Hanneman. We'll have photos soon -- did you go?

Last week we debuted a song by Sandrider called "Gorgon" from the band's forthcoming (11/19) album Godhead over on Invisible Oranges. We liked it so much we thought we'd share it here, but first, here's what we had to say about it:
A day after Link Wray and Nirvana were nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it's only fitting that we premiere a riffed-out song from a Seattle band. Here's Sandrider's "Gorgon," the first debuted track off of their forthcoming album album Godhead. As I've been listening to Godhead over the past few days, the noise/southern sludge has taken hold. Some of the tracks on the album crunch along at mid-tempo; others have lofty ambitions and culminate in epic crescendos. "Gorgon" is here to party.I failed to mention in that writeup that two of the members of Sandrider used to play in the now defunct Seattle sludgy hardcore band Akimbo. You can listen to Akimbo's posthumous final release, Live to Crush, below.
Sandrider takes their name from the Frank Herbert novel Dune, and Godhead is the three-piece's second album. Fans of bands like Red Fang and Black Tusk (sticking to bands with colors in their names here) will dig Sandrider.
I did say that fans of Red Fang would find something to like in Sandrider. As previously mentioned, Red Fang recently hit the road with The Shrine on a tour that lands in NYC at Bowery Ballroom on 12/10 with Cancer Bats and Indian Handcrafts (tickets). On that tour, Red Fang will also play a single show with Sandrider in Vancouver (without the regular tour support, but with Bison B.C.) at the Rickshaw Theater on 11/10. See below for the rest of Sandrider's dates, none of which, sadly, will be in NYC.

Inter Arma have signed to Relapse Records. The band is planning a new LP for the label in the new year, and will head out on a string of tour dates that will kick off with their appearance supporting Pallbearer at Knitting Factory on September 11 (tickets). Full tour schedule is listed at the bottom of this post. Inter Arma played our 2010 CMJ showcase alongside another great young band, Royal Thunder (who will also play the Knitting Factory bill).
Barn Burner will head out on a string of dates supporting Gallows that will include a stop at The Studio at Webster Hall on November 3. Tickets are on sale and all other dates are listed at the bottom of this post. The band recently released the new NSFW video for "Scum of the Earth," which you can watch below.
And finally, Akimbo have called it quits. The band has "half of a record completed" but so far no plans to release that material... who will step up to the plate?
All suggested shows for the next two weeks are below along with other listed tour dates and videos. What did I miss?

Akimbo unfortunately did not make it to the stage of the Brooklyn Vegan day party on Oct 25th due to some equipment issues, but damn if they didn't burn the house down with Trash Talk and The Bronx at Fontana's on Oct 21st (our CMJ night-one 'heavy' pick). Akimbo's new record Jersey Shores dropped on October 28th. Stream the whole thing here.
Bison BC's great new record Quiet Earth was released on September 30th. Tim took some pictures of the band at the post-CMJ Beasts of the East Fest at Europa on Sunday (11/2). That's what you see in this post. More of them below...

Mookie Singerman of Genghis Tron in Belfort (Photo Rod | Le-HibOO.com)
Good News: Genghis Tron announced another tour of the US.
Better News: It's a headlining tour.
Best News: The band has lined up one NYC date, October 25th (during CMJ), at Schmarket Schmotel (where they have played before) with an absolutely killer lineup of DMBQ, An Albatross, Akimbo, and Monotonix with more TBA.
When Genghis Tron finishes with their previously mentioned dates with Baroness in Canada, the trio will hit the road with checkboard-obsessives Yip Yip playing dates with Black Cobra, Behold The Arctopus, and Lovepump United labelmates (Mookie Singerman's label) Clipd Beaks.
Monotonix are also playing Knitting Factory on October 24th (one night before Market Hotel & also during CMJ). Monotonix are also on tour as we speak. All Genghis Tron dates below...

Folkin' black proggers Agalloch has announced that they are at work on their fourth LP, the follow-up the the critically acclaimed Ashes Against The Grain! The band recently parted ways with The End and "have received several offers ranging from the ridiculous to the very interesting" with respect to a new home, but no decision is expected until 2009. Meanwhile, Agalloch also announced the release of The Demonstration Archive, a retrospective of songs from 1996 - 1998 before they signed to the label. For more info on The Demonstration Archive, including how to pick it up, head here.
As we announced a couple weeks ago, doomy instrumental trio Capricorns have released River Bear Your Bones in jolly old England, but the US will see the record on September 30th. Have no fear, as we have posted 25% of the whole record (above) for you to download!
World, Black Anvil. Black Anvil, world. I wish it was that easy, because word needs to get out on these grim lords constructed from ex-members of Kill Your Idols. Drawing from early black metal and thrash and with only an occasional foray into Emperor-style tremolo picking, their new LP Time Insults The Mind is an unholy creature of shadow. Check out "Ten Talons Deep" available for download above and the video of the band tearing through "Deathsomnia" (also from Time...). and pick up the record at Momentum Records when it drops. The band is also playing Traxx in Ronkonkoma on August 23rd and The Charleston on Sept 30th.
That video, plus Neurosis, Coalesce, Converge, Municipal Waste, Rosetta, sunn 0))), Corrupted and more after the jump...

Intronaut is about to get prehistoric on dat azz, when the new LP Prehistoricisms (full tracklisting below) hits the shelves on September 16th via their new label Century Media. Metalkult has a preview in the form of "Australopithecus" which is downloadable at their site. .Tickets are still on sale for their show at Knitting Factory on August 8th with Behold The Arctopus, Mouth Of The Architect, Deadsea, and Wetnurse (one helluva bill). Mouth Of The Architect drops Quietly this week and Wetnurse drops Invisible City on September 30th. Deadsea's S/T record is out now, catch it at their myspace. "Prehistoricisms" album art there to the right.
I have heard from a very credible source that the mighty sunn 0))) will return to NYC to play a special show in celebration of the ten year anniversary of The Grimmrobe Demos. Um, yowsers. As details come in, you'll get em.
Sweden's Burst have posted two new tracks from and announced a release date for (September 16th in the US) their new record Lazarus Bird. Dig on "Cripple God" and "(We Watched) The Silver Rain" streaming at their myspace. The band has commented "Expect an album that will NOT be Origo Part 2, but something new", and if this is any indication, should be a good 'un.
Speaking of good 'uns, the Bowery Ballroom show on July 25th featuring Early Man, Valient Thorr, and the mighty Monotonix should be a grand ole time. Wanna get in gratis? Email us at BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (subject: Denim Vests) with your first & last name, and we'll randomly pick two winners and drop 'em a pair of tickets each.

Lemmy Is God (Rui M Leal)
I haven't even seen it yet, but I have hereby declared the following as one of the most metal movies of 2008. It's called Lemmy: The Movie. A feature-length documentary on the man, the legend, Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead. In case you had some doubt about how amazing this will be, check out this video of Lemmy and his then drummer "Philthy Animal" trashing a hotel room. Motorhead are one of the Metal Masters, and tickets are still available.
Downloadable above, check out the first tasty nugget from Akimbo, pulled from their upcoming Jersey Shores LP! Akimbo's new concept album, about how "sharks.... will totally fuck you up" is due later this year on Neurot Recordings. Akimbo are scheduled to play Jello Biafra's 50th BDay party with the Melvins.
While all of us are getting riled up for Monticello, All Tomorrow's Parties have announced the curators for 2008's Nightmare Before Christmas.... Melvins & Mike Patton! Info is limited so far, but we do know it'll take place between December 5 - 7 at Butlins Holiday Camp in Minehead and you can expect to see the following confirmed performers: Melvins, Isis, Neil Hamburger, Dälek, Big Business, The Locust, Zu, and Fantômas performing The Director's Cut! More deets are available here. Melvins will drop Nude with Boots this July on Ipecac. Mike Patton recently released a soundtrack to a short film, A Perfect Place.

Fugazi @ Gilman 1988 (acrofish)
Alternative Tentacles released a trailer for their upcoming documentary of the legendary punk venue 924 Gilman in Berkeley, CA. Check it out down below. For those of you east-coasters who aren't up on Gilman, here's a little bio courtesy of the world's most accurate encyclopedia:
The 924 Gilman Street project, alternately the Alternative Music Foundation, is the Berkeley, California street address and official business name of the all-ages, non-profit, collectively organized music club usually referred to by its fans simply as "Gilman.".... On December 31, 1986, the club held its first show. Since then, 924 Gilman Street has been one of the longest-running independent music venues in the United States..... 924 Gilman... was started in part because of the lack of punk venues in the San Francisco Bay Area during this era, particularly all-ages venues.Pretty much every major punk/hardcore act has passed through Gilman and some of it's regulars, like Green Day, Rancid, & AFI, went on to become major arena-filling acts.
Fugazi went on to break up which I'm really only mentioning so I can remind you again that you can catch one of their members live in NYC tonight (May 27).
