shoppers at Other Music on #RSD13

So how did you fare on Record Store Day 2013? I was surprised that I found most of my big wants, including Ty Segall's Ty Rex 2 (found at Academy Annex in Williamsburg), the Trouble in Mind four-way split and Stephen-Malkmus-plays-Can 12" (acquired at Cake Shop), the first two Orange Juice albums (Turntable Lab) and Pulp's "After You" 12" (Co-Op 87 at midnight). Did anybody spot the No Alternative reissue? That was the only thing on my list I didn't find.

The busiest store was probably Other Music which still sported a 40-person line to get in when I went by around 2:30 PM. Kim's still had a lot of exclusives left when I swung by around 3 PM, despite being open at 8 AM. Customer Service Award goes to the nice folks at Turntable Lab who actually came out and asked people on line what they were looking for and then pulled it for them!

I also enjoyed hanging out at In Living Stereo, which had free PBR and live performances from Alex Bleeker & the Freaks and Prince Rupert Drops. They didn't have the most RSD stuff, but they do have one of the better curated used sections I've flipped through in a while. Didn't make it to Generation for their in-store performances, but Andrew did and said it was a good time. (It was, Swearin' (pictured below) played an especially great set including some new stuff that I'm hoping means a new record is coming - Andrew.)

line to get in Other Music on Record Store Day 2012

As you are probably aware, this Saturday (4/20) is Record Store Day. We've already told you some of our picks from the myriad #RSD13 exclusives, but many of NYC's record stores are having special events that day. While this guide is pretty thorough, it may not be comprehensive. If you know of cool Record Store Day happenings that aren't in this post, let us know in the comments. But here's the stuff we found:

We already told you about Greenwich Village mainstay Generation Records who are having live performances from Forgetters, Doug Gillard, Swearin' and Livids as well as DJ sets from WFMU's Tom Scharpling and Forgetters' Blake Schwarzenbach. Generation will open at 10 AM, with bands starting at 2 PM. Schedule still TBA.

While you're in the area, take a second to walk over to Bleecker Bob's where you won't find any records for sale, but as of Wednesday you could still at least take one more look through the window at the somewhat-still stocked shelves of the closed store.

Over at In Living Stereo on Great Jones, they'll have live performances from Alex Bleeker & the Freaks and Prince Rupert's Drops, plus free PBR from noon. More info here.

Wild Nothing at Other Music, RSD2012 (more)

Other Music isn't big enough to have bands play while people shop, so they have bands DJ during RSD, and this year's line-up will have Parquet Courts, Sharon Van Etten, Jonathan Toubin and more on the decks. Other Music opens at 10:30 AM with DJs starting at noon (schedule is below).

Also having DJs spin on #RSD13, as mentioned, is East Village shop Turntable Lab. Their line-up also includes FaltyDL, as well as Nomi Ruiz, Justin Strauss, Eli Escobar and many more. DJs spin from 10 AM - 8 PM.

Kim's Video & Music promises "DJ sets from some of your favorite local artists and DJ's" but they don't name names. They are, however, open at 8 AM.

Another EV store, Good Records, won't have RSD exclusives, but they will have a bunch of rare used vinyl they'll be putting out that day, including albums by Brian Eno, The Fall, Blur, Pink Floyd, The White Stripes and more. They'll also have free food and beverages. More details are here.

Some of you may not remember when Cake Shop back lounge was a record store, but they still carry a few a few new releases and they'll have a selection of RSD exclusives on Saturday. Additionally, they'll have "lots of deals, lots of old stuff we've been holding onto forever etc! Plus: tons of fun, possible balloons and maybe Eddie!" That night Record Store Day moves downstairs with an extremely stacked indie rock/pop line-up, with Literature, Grand Resort, Sparxx, Cascading Slopes, The Hairs, a short solo set from TPOBPAH's Kip Berman and Scott and Charlene's Wedding. Kip and Maria Sherman will also be on DJ duty. Doors for the night show are at 8 PM and is a mere $5 entry. A pretty weird, funny video hyping Cake Shop's RSD fun is below.

Downtown at J&R Music World, Anthrax will be in the house at 12:30 PM signing records and anything else you want their John Hancock on, and they generally have a good selection of #RSD13 exclusives too.

Meanwhile in Brooklyn, Record Store Day will be the last day ever for Williamsburg's Sound Fix, which is probably enough for them (read a new interview with the owner HERE). Last year they had doughnuts and coffee, if memory serves. They're open at 10 AM and in addition to RSD exclusive, their fire sale (which is happening now) includes "25% off all CDs, 10% off all LPs."

Williamsburg stores in general don't seem to be doing a whole lot of special events on Saturday, though both Academy Records Annex and Earwax will have #RSD13 exclusives, and East Village Radio will be streaming live from Academy Records at 4pm.

Co-Op 87 (via)

For the second year, the tiny but well-stocked Co-Op 87 in Greenpoint will be open for the entirety of Record Store Day, meaning midnight to midnight. No in-store performances or celeb DJs, but they are making a special offer for the truly insane record buyers out there:

"If you are tuff enuff to come to Co-Op 87 Records ONCE an hour, EVERY hour of Record Store Day (24 visits!) and spend $10 on a record (not multiple records) at least ONCE for EACH of those hours, you'll be entitled to an INCREASING percentage off, starting at 4% and increasing BY 4% each time on ANY one record UP to $100! That means he or she who braves this madness could by the final hour, buy ANY $100 or less record for a WHOPPING 96% off!"

DUMBO's Halcyon Records will have "instore DJs" and are open at 10 AM.

As for the general NY area, Vintage Vinyl in Ford, NJ will have a full stock of RSD exclusives but no in-stores announced,

And if you happen to be in Philadelphia on Saturday, Main Street Music will feature a special RSD performances by Billy Bragg, the Joy Formidable, Generationals and more.

And if you're in the Windy City, BV Chicago and Saki Records are throwing a RSD party with live performances from Pink Avalanche, The Beets, Twin Peaks and more.

Woods @ MHOW, Nov. 2012 (more by PSquared Photography)

Brooklyn's Woods will be spending most of the summer on tour and to commemorate the jaunt they'll be releasing a new single via their Woodist label. The b-side of that 7" is a very faithful cover of The Kinks' "God's Children" which originally appeared on the soundtrack to the 1971 penile transplant comedy, Percy. You can stream it below.

The North American leg of Woods' tour wraps up here in NYC for a show at Bowery Ballroom on July 27 with openers Alex Bleeker and the Freaks. No word on advance tickets but you can keep checking Ticketmaster if you like.

Woods' last NYC show was at Music Hall of Williamsburg back in November. All upcoming tour dates are listed below.

Quilt at Mercury Lounge in 2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

Brooklyn venue Glasslands will a feel a little more like late '60s San Francisco on February 17, when they host Real Estate side project Alex Bleeker & The Freaks (who are way more psych/blues than Alex's other gig), the Summer of Love vibes of Boston's Quilt, and the drone folk of Weyes Blood. Tickets for what should be an all around great show are on sale now.

In related news, Alex Bleeker just interviewed Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham for Relix. One of the things they spoke about was Fleetwood Mac's influence on Alex and the surrounding indie culture:

AB: I have my own opinion on this, but have you noticed a younger audience showing up at your shows or showing an appreciation for not only Fleetwood Mac records but your solo work? Have you noticed any increase in that [demographic] in the past couple of years?

LB: Well, you know, I guess you can qualify anything I say by saying, "The longer you're around, [the] younger people start to look." But yes, I'd say that it's probably true. Even if you were to take the solo work out of the equation and just talk about the body of work that Fleetwood Mac has. Sometimes it takes sowing those seeds and letting things take root and seeing what is going to make sense to people down the line. What's going [on] in an album like Rumours makes sense to any number of generations on a mainstream level, but then you've got something like Tusk which is going to make sense to people that have a more indie sensibility. That's been very gratifying because that's what that album is all about.

...

AB: Well I don't know if [ Relix ] told you anything about me, but I'm not a journalist or writer. I'm 26, I play in a rock band and I can confidently tell you that Fleetwood Mac and of course your solo work has had a tremendous influence and is particularly popular with musicians right now in a more countercultural community.

LB: You know, that's one of the lessons you start to learn. And again, why being in Fleetwood Mac is so helpful and so meaningful is because I can go out there and undermine the brand, if you will.

The Allman Brothers are playing ten shows at Beacon Theatre between March 1 to March 16. Tickets for all ten nights are on Fan Club presale now, go on AmEx presale today at noon, and general sale starts January 11 at 10 AM.

The Black Crowes are playing four nights in the NYC area this Apirl, with shows at The Capitol Theatre on April 2 and 3 and Terminal 5 on April 5 and 6. Tickets for the Capitol Theatre shows and the T5 shows go on sale January 11 at 10 AM.

The Big Pink are playing an Encore! Session at Le Baron Chinatown on January 7.

Denitia and Sene were added to the Memory Tapes show at Glasslands. Tickets for that show are still available.

Kria Brekkan is playing the newly reopened Silent Barn on January 8 with Aaron Roche and Gabrielle Herbst & Swoon Shop. No advance tickets for this one, more details at the facebook event.

Machinedrum, who just played Le Poisson Rouge on 12/30, will play a free show at Tammany Hall on Saturday (1/5) with Allies for Everyone (DJ), Evan MIchael, Dan Wender, and Sheepshead.

Zs, Mick Barr, Hubble, Kid Millions/Jim Sauter Duo, and DJ Ripley are playing Public Assembly on Sunday (1/6). No advance tickets, more details at the facebook event.

Alex Bleeker & the Freaks, Lux Perpetua, and Scott & Charlene's Wedding are playing Death by Audio on January 19. Admission is $7 at the door.

Deer Tick & friends @ Brooklyn Bowl

Deer Tick have been up to a lot this month, and after just posting pics from their set at the Capitol Theatre last night (12/27), where they were supporting My Morning Jacket, we've got a slightly belated set of pics of the third and final night of their Brooklyn Bowl residency, where they performed an album and an EP in its entirety each night. Night 3 (12/19) saw the band, who were joined by a horn section, playing Divine Providence and the Tim EP. Here are those pictures.

Like the first two shows, Deer Tick's Ian O'Neill opened the show (no pics of his set), and for this one he was followed by Real Estate side project Alex Bleeker and the Freaks whose bluesier (than Real Estate) sound had them fitting in with Deer Tick a lot better than Real Estate or Ducktails would have. Then Yaps (whose Top 10 Albums of 2012 list is below) introduced author/comedian Dave Hill (who just gave us his Best of 2012 list) who introduced Deer Tick (shirtless, obviously) before they went on to play a booze-soaked set of Divine Providence, Tim and covers of Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues," Paul Westerberg's "Mr. Cigarette," Elliot Smith's "Between the Bar," Jim Croce's "Bad Bad Leroy Brown" and Beastie Boys' "Fight For Your RIght (To Party!)," plus a few other original tunes worked in. Members of Delta Spirit also joined for the encore.

As mentioned, Deer Tick play a sold out show at Maxwell's tonight (12/28) and NYE in Boston with Two Gallants.

Real Estate in a church in Brooklyn last month (more by Greg Cristman)

Mini have teamed up with RCD LBL to present the Normal Crashing Tour, which brings a different band to a secret location in different US cities. The "tour" began in Chicago on Monday (12/3) with Twin Shadow and comes to Williamsburg, Brooklyn this Friday (12/7) at 5:30 for a free Real Estate show in a TBA location. More info on that show at the facebook event but RSVP is not required. The "tour" will also come to Austin and LA soon. Stay tuned.

In related news, Real Estate member Alex Bleeker (and The Freaks) will open the third of three shows in Deer Tick's upcoming Brooklyn Bowl residency, where Deer Tick will be performing an album and an EP in full each night. Alex is on board for the December 19 show where Deer Tick is doing Divine Providence and the Tim EP. Ian O'Neil of Deer Tick is also playing an opening set. Tickets for that show are still available, or you can also pick up a three night pass, which gains you access to all three shows, the first of which is tonight (12/5).

As mentioned, the other Real Estate side project Ducktails (led by Matt Mondanile) will play a guest-filled record release show for their new album, The Flower Lane, on January 23 at Le Poisson Rouge (tickets). Matt just dropped a new song off that album, "Letter of Intent," which features Jessa Farkas (of Future Shuttle) on vocals, Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never, Ford & Lopatin) on synth, and Joel Ford (Airbird, Ford & Lopatin) on bass. You can stream that song below. Jessa and Joel are both on board for the release show at LPR and it wouldn't be a surprise if Oneohtrix Point Never, who just played MoMA PS1 with Ducktails, shows up too.

As mentioned, the Squarepusher, Bonobo (DJ), Holy Fuck, and Mount Kimbie show at Terminal 5 isstill on, and for what it's worth, there will be drink specials before Squarepusher's headlining set.

The Meat Loaf show at Beacon Theatre, which was supposed to happen on tonight has been postponed to a later date: "Fans are encouraged to hold onto their tickets as we work to reschedule the show. An announcement about a new date will be forthcoming."

Woodkid was forced to cancel his dates in NYC, San Francisco, and LA due to the hurricane and its effect on major airports. The NYC show was supposed to happen tonight (11/1) at Irving Plaza and will be rescheduled to a TBA date. Tickets are refundable at the reseller.

As mentioned, the ESG show at Bowery Electric with Sinkane has been postponed to a later date TBD in December/January. The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black show that was moved to tonight from Tuesday (10/30) has been cancelled.

As mentioned, all Dita Von Teese shows have been cancelled.

The Freelance Whales show at Webster Hall has been postponed.

Todd Barry's show at the Bell House is postponed. The Bell House is closed tonight.

Union Hall, however, is open as a bar... but tonight's Communion NYC has been cancelled. UPDATE: Union is now hosting a fundraiser with Riot Fox & Mount Sharp - 8:30pm/$10 proceeds to benefit Red Hook Initiative.

Littlefield is open with the Chris Gethard Show, featuring "the weirdest bands we know": Big Digits, Stumblebum Brass Band, Naked Heroes, and Mindtroll. Tickets are still available.

Over at Carnegie Hall, the performance by the Orchestra of St. Luke's with conductor Nicholas McGegan that was to be in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage, has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 1 with soloist to be announced. And the performance by pianist Wael Farouk, that was to happen in Weill Recital Hall, has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 1. Tickets for both November 1 performances will be honored at their new date.

Real Estate at Bomb Fest 2011 (more by Eric M Townsend)

Congrats to Real Estate (and new live drummer Jackson Pollis), as well as offshoots Ducktails (Real Estate's Matthew Mondanile) and Alex Bleeker and the Freaks, who have all signed to Domino! The label will release the forthcoming Real Estate LP, currently in the throes of production, in October. Details are forthcoming. Meanwhile some new live shows were announced.

With the heat starting to crank up even though its only early June, there may be some reconsideration regarding show choices based on venue coolness and comfort. We already knew that The Feelies will play Maxwell's three times in early July in addition to their FREE outdoor appearance at Prospect Park with Times New Viking and Real Estate. But now comes word that Real Estate has hopped on the air-conditioning train too, by adding a show at Maxwell's on July 24th (the day after the Prospect Park show). Tickets for Real Estate are on sale, and Feelies tix are all still available too: July 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

The Maxwell's show, like most of Real Estate's July dates, will be with Dent May. They are all listed below.

Both Real Estate and Ducktails will also hit the Woodsist Festival in Big Sur on July 30th and 31st, where they'll meet up with Woods, Sic Alps (new/old drummer Ty Segall included), The Fresh & Onlys, Woods/Fresh & Onlys Big Band, and many others over the two days. Individual day tickets are still available.

BOBBY @ Knitting Factory

"If you were at Knitting Factory last night, you got a trio of entertainment forms. You have the experimental musical stylings of BOBBY, you have projected artistic images and the celebration of Cinco de Mayo. As we know, Cinco de Mayo is when St. Mayo drove five big snakes out of Tijuana using a mariachi band while wearing a big sombrero.

The Massachusetts-based collective are a fairly new band as founded by Tom Greenberg and featuring Molly Sarle of the popular vocal group Mountain Man. When I use the term experimental, that's a code word for "I have no idea what genre of music this lies under". Then I have to admit that music shouldn't need to be defined by genres. With the sparse guitars and a few electronic samplers, keyboards and processors, BOBBY does a fine of job making all that weirdness come together. It does help that Sarle's whoops and moans gives their set an other worldly quality." [Music Snobbery]

BOBBY played after a chill set by Real Estate side project Alex Bleeker & the Freaks (who covered a Mountain Man song). Detroit band Prussia opened the show and impressed with high energy and strong vocals. To quote Flagpole, "Imagine Flowers-era Rolling Stones colliding with Animal Collective while hanging out at Vampire Weekend's house and you're on the right track."

Right before the show we hosted a Hornitos Tequila-sponsored Cinco de Mayo party in the Knitting Factory front bar. 21+ ticketholders could choose between a free "Vegan Margarita" (named after the website more than the ingredients) and the "What about Bobb(by)" (or they could have both) (or as many as they could drink/hold in a 2 hour period). Which one did you like better? I thought I liked the "Vegan" better at first, but ended up partial to the "Bobby."

BOBBY return to NYC as part of a tour with Thao & Mirah. Prussia also played a show one night earlier at Mercury Lounge with Dominique Young Unique. Alex Bleeker's band Real Estate has a few shows coming up later this month.
