Boy 8-Bit

Last week in dance I only made it out one night, but had an absolute blast! Friday night I headed to Public Assembly around midnight to see Boy 8-Bit. While he didn't go on for an hour or so, his 1-1/2 hour long set was well worth the wait. From about 1:30 until 3, he played a UK-influenced, yet diverse set. He opened with his track "The Suspense Is Killing Me" which he manipulated to be a little more subtle than usual - a great starting point and indication of what was to come.
The rest of the set was a pretty current mix, punctuated with some of his own tracks (including some from the Baltic Pine EP which I strongly recommend - info on the release in last week's post) as well as Boy 8-Bit's own impressive take on some already awesome tracks. From a remix of Fake Blood's "Mars" (a track I thought couldn't get any better) to Bumblebeez's "Rio" (a track I never thought I'd be glad to hear) to what might have been (but I'm not certain) an extremely messed with, instrumental only remix of TTC's "Travailler"...Boy 8-Bit's set at Public Assembly was easily one of the most unpredictable, exciting, dance-able sets of this year.
While I find this week's dance prospects a bit less exciting, there certainly is a lot going on:

Sorry for the interruption in the Week In Dance...there were some foreign dancefloors I needed to explore. Hopefully you were able to get down without me. As much as I'm dying to tell you what I did...there's way too much happening this week (and I need to go through some photos).
Before we get to that, one quick heads up that Fatboy Slim (also more recently known as Brighton Port Authority) is DJing Terminal 5 on June 24th. Tickets are currently on American Express presale, with the regular sale starting Friday at noon.
Now here's to making up for lost time (Thursday & Friday night events & more):

Trevor Jackson @ Studio B

Last week in dance was a lot of fun despite only going to one event - Primetime meets Fixed at Studio B. I caught most of Eamon Harkin's set in which he masterfully mixed up some disco, house, and techno. House of House, who I hadn't seen before, truly lived up to their name in terms of their selections. The Studio B crowd was feeding off of the duo's enthusiasm as House of House animatedly delivered track after track. As much as I enjoyed their set I was extremely excited and anxious for Trevor Jackson to begin. The set Trevor finally delivered at nearly 2:30 was well worth the wait. For the next hour an a half he played an excellent set that was heavy on house and disco, with some modern subtleties. Despite only being able to identify "Heaven's In the Backseat of My Cadillac" by Hot Chocolate, "Situation" by Yaz, and "Use Me" by Runaway out of the entire set, it was easily one of the better dj sets I've witnessed in '09 thus far.
I have to admit I'm more excited about seeing David Byrne than getting down this weekend, but here are some options if you'd rather not leave the dancing to the man in the big suit:

M83 @ Webster Hall - Nov. 14, 2008 (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)

Last Friday I had a frustrating, puzzling experience at the M83 show at Webster Hall. M83 is easily one of my favorite bands and I'd enjoyed many of their shows prior to last week's including the one they played just a few months ago at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Despite playing a similar set Friday night, I just wasn't having my typically awesome M83 experience. For some reason, I had no patience for their more mellow and slow songs and when they finally would play something more upbeat or poppy (like Don't Save Us From the Flames or Graveyard Girl) it didn't pack as much of a punch as I wanted. The encore of Couleurs was amazing, but overall something just seemed to be missing. That said, one of my friends loved it, the another (who had never seen M83 before and was only slightly familiar with their music) shared thoughts similar to mine. I also watched some videos of the show THE following morning and got goosebumps, so who knows...Check out one of M83 performing Teen Angst below (more here):
