Iron & Wine, Nick Lowe and more @ Beacon Theatre

[Sam] Beam sang, in his gentle high tenor, about memories and connections, families and lovers. His songs, at their core, are folky ballads that mingle storytelling with more abstruse thoughts. But he has embellished them in various ways through the years: with folk-rock, country, jazz, even a little R&B. The "In the Reins" EP was his first experiment with horns -- Calexico's pair of mariachi trumpets -- but not his last; two horn players from his current Iron and Wine band, Curtis Fowlkes on trombone and Stuart Bogie on saxophone and flute, were also on hand, giving some songs a nudge toward jazz.

Calexico carried [Kathleen] Edwards's "Soft Place to Land" from a pensive hush into sorrowful peaks, and it stoked the rhythm just enough behind two incantatory songs from [Beth] Orton, the chugging "Call Me the Breeze" and the enveloping "Mystery." It was just retro enough for [Nick] Lowe's wry, elegantly turned novelty song "Christmas at the Airport" and straightforwardly pop for his "Cruel to Be Kind."

For [Glen] Hansard, the Irish songwriter behind the musical "Once," Calexico was attentive to the songs' dramatic arcs of loss and redemption. [NY Times]

The WFUV Holiday Cheer benefit went down at Beacon Theatre last week (12/10) with Iron and Wine and Calexico (who collaborated on 2005's In the Reins EP) plus Kathleen Edwards, Beth Orton, Nick Lowe, Glen Hansard and Amos Lee. The show saw the artists doing different collaborations throughout the night, and there were parts where the entire bill shared the stage at once. In addition to teaming up for each other's original songs, the artists did some covers, including Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." Pictures of the show are in this post.

One of the other songs covered at the show was The Pogues' holiday classic, "Fairytale of New York" which Iron & Wine, Calexico, Glen Hansard, and Kathleen Edwards also covered later in the week on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. You can watch a video of that performance, along with more pictures of the Beacon Theatre show, below.

Beth Orton at LPR in July (more by Robert Altman)
Beth Orton

Earlier this year, we mentioned that WFUV would be doing their Holiday Cheer benefit at Beacon Theatre, which happens TONIGHT (12/10) with Iron & Wine, Calexico, and Nick Lowe. As if that wasn't already a fantastic lineup of folk/singer-songwriter type stuff, since we last spoke, more great atists were added, including Glen Hansard (The Frames, The Swell Season, Once), Kathleen Edwards, Beth Orton, and Amos Lee. Tickets for tonight's show are still available, but ticketmaster is saying "not many left."

UK singer Beth Orton will also bring her folktronica back to NYC for Lincoln Center's American Songbook series on February 14 in The Allen Room. Tickets for that show are still available. All Beth Orton dates are listed below...

John, Willie, Pete, Dave and Neil @ Farm Aid 2013
Farm Aid 2013
Farm Aid 2013

"Friends, I'm ninety-four and don't have much voice left," said surprise Farm Aid guest Pete Seeger when he took the stage near the end of the annual benefit concert. "Here is a song I think you may know. I think if we sing it together we'll make it a good song." He wasn't kidding about the state of his voice, but he projected as much as he could and 26,000 fans joined him in a sing-along rendition of "If I Had A Hammer," a tune he wrote with Lee Hayes a stunning sixty-four years ago.

Seeger, making one of his first major public appearances since the death of his wife Toshi in July, then invited Farm Aid board members Dave Mathews, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Willie Nelson onstage for a rousing "This Land Is Your Land." None of them brought guitars, allowing Seeger and his banjo to take the lead. He guided the crowd, and the four music icons huddled beside him, through the oft-ignored "private property" verse (causing Young to raise his arms in victory). They even introduced a new verse about New York state that culminated with "New York was made to be frack free." - [Rolling Stone]

Farm Aid 2013 happened on Saturday (9/21) at Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY and this year's benefit concert featured sets from founders Neil Young, Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp, plus Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Charlene Carter, Pegi Young (Neil's wife -- he sat in on few songs), and more. The highlight, as mentioned in the quoted article above, was a surprise appearance by folk legend Pete Seeger. Pictures from the whole day are in this post.

Money raised at Farm Aid goes to help keep family farmers on their land. Lots more pics below....

Prince

As mentioned, City Winery founder Michael Dorf is presenting a tribute to Prince at Carnegie Hall on March 7, his next in a long line of tribute shows he's done at the historic Manhattan venue. Since we last spoke, the lineup of great musicians that will be performing at the show has been expanded. It features Elvis Costello, The Waterboys, Talib Kweli, Booker T, DeVotchka, Bettye Lavette, Sandra Bernhard, Bilal, Blind Boys of Alabama, Bhi Bhiman, Amos Lee, Citizen Cope & Alice Smith, Maya Rudolph's Prince tribute group with Gretchen Lieberum, Princess, house band The Roots, and perhaps most excitingly, R&B singer D'Angelo (who we're still waiting on that new album from). Tickets are still available and proceeds will benefit underprivileged youth.

Meanwhile, Prince recently posted a lyric video for a new song, "Screwdriver," to his website and revealed another new track, "Chapter & Verse," which you can stream below. You can buy "Screwdriver" and a remix of that song, AND another new song that came out today called "Breakfast Can Wait" at a mysterious website called 3rd Eye Girl. According to Questlove, "#BreakfastCanWait is WOW." Check it out.

In other related news, Elvis Costello and The Roots, who are both on the lineup for the Prince tribute, are releasing a collaborative album this year according to an interview that Questlove did with Billboard. Questlove says of the album, "We had 13 or 14 songs, but then we said, 'Ooh! Wait a minute! Let's replace four of these songs with four better songs! And now we have the tightest 12-14 song collection out of about 20 songs that we made." No release date, title, or any other info has been revealed yet, but Questlove assures us, "I can just say that it is brilliant."

Elvis Costello also plays a cancer benefit with The Who at The Theatre at Madison Square Garden on February 28.
