"We make to-do lists, shopping lists, wish lists...but somehow our lists just don't ROCK. The ones in this new book do....The Official Punk Rock Book of Lists is the handiwork of Handsome Dick Manitoba of the Dictators and Amy Wallace of the original Book of Lists. They're billing this book as "Essential bathroom reading!!!! " but we like it at the breakfast table, actually. We loved learning how about The Pogues got their name and what Mario Batali's favorite pizzas in the world are. (What does that have to do with punk rock? According to this tome, pizza is the MOST punk rock food of all.)" [beatrice]* Market Hotel opens

LCD Soundsystem's Sound of Silver topped the Idolator 2007 Idolator Pop Critics Poll, and now it has won the 35th Annual Pazz & Jop Village Voice one as well. Pitchfork had it at number two. I'm an idiot and never posted my list, but when and if I do, it will also be in my top three.
Amy Winehouse was voted "No. 4 & 19 tracks", "No. 5 Artist", and "No. 5 Album" in Idolator's poll. The Village Voice poll has her at 4th best album, and #1 single. I'm not going to lie. I listened to that album a lot too. It just sucks what has happened to her since it came out - including the crack smoking video that just came out, which is being investigated by the police, and which has apparently (hopefully & luckily) also has her back in rehab.
The above art is from Idolator. The Voice cover is below....
Mark Ronson and blonde Amy Winehouse
"The 24-year-old, whose husband Blake Fielder-Civil is being held on remand accused of inflicting grievous bodily harm and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, went to a London police station to be arrested in agreement with police." [Reuters]
....Beck, Wilco, White Stripes, Kanye West, The Shins, Common & Jay-Z too
Amy Winehouse receives the nomination for Best Record (Mark Ronson), Album of the Year (vs Kanye West), Song of the Year, Best New Artist (vs Feist!), Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (vs Feist!), Best Pop Vocal Album (vs Feist!), and Producer of the Year (Mark Ronson)! I guess it's not weird she was on the cover of the Post.
Now Feist has something else to talk about.
It didn't shock me that Amy Winehouse was found (in the UK) walking around barefoot and shirtless in the middle of the night. I am kind of surprised that the story made the cover of one of NYC's most visible newspapers yesterday though. I would say I was confused by the Post's decision, but obviously they do what they think will sell papers.
Amy Winehouse, 14 years old, on TV (CRED)
So, The Woodie Awards happened last night. Amy Winehouse was supposed to play, but didn't due to visa complications, but then she got the visa and didn't play anyway, and she's supposed to play SNL this weekend, though she probably wouldn't show up to that either - even if there wasn't a writers strike. She also just didn't show up to a video shoot, and now her house was raided, her husband arrested...
Amy Winehouse's husband Blake Fielder-Civil was sensationally arrested in front of her last night over a claimed £200,000 plot to fix a trial. In related news, maybe you haven't seen the video of Pete Doherty shooting up yet. Happy (10 days after) Halloween. The new Babyshambles video is below...
As eight plain-clothed officers manacled Fielder-Civil and led him off to cells, the tearful jazz diva begged hysterically: "I want to go with him."
Then she stood on tiptoe, threw her arms around his neck, hugged and kissed him and repeatedly said: "Baby, I love you. Baby, I'll be fine." Finally, weeping and hyperventilating Amy, 24, ran out of the flat and shouted to Fielder-Civil in the courtyard below: "I'll be fine. Baby, I love." [Mirror]
Rilo Kiley's Street Team (CRED)
Calling all Rilo Kiley fans in the NYC area!!I wonder if it's better to have seen them before, or to not have seen them before. Lupe Fiasco is also rumored to be playing (along with Tokyo Police Club, Spank Rock and The Academy Is). Annie Lennox is being honored and will be there. Amy Winehouse will not (though I can't speak for the many impersonators).
Rilo Kiley will be performing at the 2007 MTVU Woodie Awards this Thursday, 11/8/07 at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC. We need true, dedicated COLLEGE fans to be part of this show. For FREE tickets send an e-mail ASAP to firstname.lastname@example.org and please include the following info:
-Where do you go to college?
-What is your favorite Rilo Kiley song?
-Are you available from 6pm to 10pm this Thursday evening?
-Have you seen them in concert before?

You probably heard: some writers are on strike. That means no new late night TV right now. That means Band of Horses didn't get to play Conan last night, Kanye West didn't get to play Letterman, and it means that Grizzly Bear don't get to play Conan tonight (Nov 6, 2007). They'll probably reschedule the performances, but Grizzly Bear misses out on a TV appearance that was going to synchronize perfectly with the release of their new EP. Friend (the latest addition to the 8.0 club) is out now. Order it from Insound to get a free limited edition silkscreen poster.
Speaking of Grizzly Bear, they performed at the Society of Ethical Culture in NYC on Saturday night (Nov 3, 2007) - part of the Wordless Music Series - to an audience that included Paul Simon (an artist that Grizzly Bear is known to cover, and who they did cover also that night). It was the same night that GB's "friend" Feist was playing right across town on Saturday Night Live. And speaking of SNL, that's another TV show that might not air this week if the writers don't get what they want. That means Amy Winehouse won't get to play it....or maybe she's not playing it already....I'm confused (she is definitely not playing the Woodies though - for "visa issues" related to the drug stuff).
Grizzly Bear @ Wordless Music Series, NYC - NOV 3, 2007 (CRED)
As Ed pointed out early in the set, this show was an unofficial end of tour celebration of sorts, as the band had been on the road for most of the past year and a half. Usually when this is the case, the performance can go one of two ways. One option is that the band is so drained and sick and tired of playing the same songs that they launch into a sort of auto-pilot self parody (see the Strokes at the end of their "Room on Fire" tour). The preferable option, however, is that the combination of having become so technically in control of one's material coupled with the euphoria of playing a hometown show with the finish line in sight will make for something altogether different and spectacular. [read the rest @ Ear Farm]Sigur Ros @ Wordless Music Series, NYC - Oct 5, 2007 (CRED)
Secondly, beautiful show not just the sigur ros part. And yes Sufjan was there. I was sitting right in back of him along with 2 of the guys from The National. They were all impatient and left right before Sigur Ros came on. Poor Sufjan was complaining he had to get out of there. Hard to blame him cause it was a sauna in there. Also there was Superwolf Matt or Chavez Matt however you like supporting his buddy Will. Great show and got to see Sigur Ros play the same amount of songs they are playing tomorrow night for umm lets see 35 dollars less. [Anonymous]But wait, what is that photo on the top of this post you ask? Oh yeah, Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear has been named one of this year's Out 100 ("the men and women who made 2007 a year to remember") - a list that also includes James St. James, Beth Ditto (The Gossip), Bianca Casady (Cocorosie), Marc Almond, Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy), Nico Muhly, Casey Spooner (Fischerspooner), and Antony. That's Casey and Antony in the picture with Ed (some new "friends"?). Nico isn't pictured on the Out site yet, but he did recently play the same Wordless Music Series show that Sigur Ros played (the "not just the sigur ros part")....
Nico Muhly @ Wordless Music Series, NYC - OCT 5, 2007 (CRED)
Grizzly Bear are playing one more NYC (mini) show before taking a break for a long time - it's tomorrow (Nov 7th) @ the Virgin Union Square Megastore in NYC (7pm, free).
And in case you missed it, the friends that appear on Grizzly Bear's new EP are Beirut, Dirty Projectors, CSS, Band of Horses, CSS and Deerhunter. Will Oldham is not one of Grizzly Bear's friends, but Will ("his buddy Will" in the review above) did also perform at that now-legendary "Wordless" show in October too...
I have to finish what I started, and I guess that would be compiling the world's biggest collection of people dressed as Amy Winehouse for Halloween. I was already up to 92 pictures. By the end of this post you'll have seen another 166. Some are great, and more than a few paired Amy with her boyfriend Blake Fielder-Civil. This photo falls into both of those categories....
Even more looked less like Amy, and then there were many Amys that decided to hang out with Pete Doherty instead of Blake - a pairing that makes a lot of sense from the English musician drug addict tabloid point of view. This picture falls into both of those categories....
Pete Doggerty & Amy Doghouse
In related news,
After Amy Wino's hideous performance at the MTV Europe Awards last night, she was booed when she accepted an award for Artists' Choice. Pete Doherty immediately came to her defense. Then there was Amy with Lily Allen...
He was asked what advice he would give Wino, "I wouldn't give her any. She's fine. It's all bollocks. People should leave her alone. I went for a drink with her earlier today and she's totally fine. Perfectly healthy and happy.
"People are saying she's out of control, but she's not. She's a sensible girl and she knows what she's doing. She ain't doing nothing wrong." [dlisted]
and even Amy with M.I.A....
Now we'll get to more Amy's in a second, but first: To answer my own question, "no", Amy is no longer playing the MTVu Woody Awards or Saturday Night Live due to visa issues. Oh well - not a big loss considering how scary her last live appearance was. That video, and a zillion more Amy impersonators, below.....

Amy Winehouse's father Mitch has claimed that his daughter cannot get into the USA because she was duped into signing a drugs possession confession.I guess "What else is new?" would be good to say here. Maybe they'll clear it up in time for her performance at the Woodies @ Roseland on November 8th. In related news, Tokyo Police Club has been added to that bill that also includes Spank Rock. They don't sell tickets, but I'll be giving a bunch away (stay tuned).
The singer's father told 'This Morning' that Amy was asked to sign a form after her recent arrest in Norway but she did not know what she was signing. Winehouse and her husband Blake Fielder-Civil were arrested for possession of marijuana but the singer's father claims that this was a mistake. "It didn't belong to her, it belonged to someone else on the tour. They arrested Blake, Amy and the person who was responsible."
"They only released them after they signed a form, which they were told was a release form," he said.
"It was in Norwegian. It was actually a confession, so this is being dealt with now by the Norwegian authorities and the British consulate because the ramifications of that are that she now cant get into the States and she was meant to go next week."
Amy is also scheduled to play Saturday Night Live on November 10th. More TPC tour dates below..

Amy Winehouse with The Olson Twins in London, Oct 9, 2007
Amy Winehouse never made it to NYC last time she was supposed to (a lot of times actually). Let's see if she makes it next time - to the 2007 MTVU Woodie Awards taking place at Roseland Ballroom on November 18th. Spank Rock is playing too. More info, and nominees, below....
2007 Mercury Prize winners the Klaxons opened for Bjork at Madison Square Garden the other day. What were they wearing? I don't even recognize them. Is this Lovefoxxx's influence? Tickets are on sale for their Webster Hall show (which Shitdisco is no longer playing).
Speaking of funny outfits, Bat For Lashes - sometimes compared to Bjork (and I'll admit that Natasha Khan does do a mean Bjork) didn't win the Mercury Prize. They did play Bowery Ballroom this week though.
New Young Pony Club (also nominated) are playing Studio B on Thursday October 18th for CMJ. It's the Modular Records party. Muscles & The Cool Kids are also playing live, and Simian Mobile Disco are DJing. I saw NYPC at the Oya Festival in Norway this summer, and I didn't like them nearly as much as I did when they last played Brooklyn.
I didn't love Fionn Regan (also nominated) when I saw him at Austin City Limits. I was also saying he must have fans here though - because he's headlining the Gramercy Theatre. I knew that statement would come back to haunt me. The show was moved to Mercury Lounge. Tickets are on sale.

Due to the rigours involved in touring, Amy Winehouse has been advised to postpone her upcoming September US and Canadian tour dates. All ticket holders may obtain refunds at their point of purchase. Amy's European and UK tour dates in October and November remain in place. Plans are being made to reschedule her US tour for early 2008. Until then, Amy has been ordered to rest and is working with medical professionals to address her health. She also just cancelled her appearance at the Oya Festival in Norway, which kind of worked out for me because she was supposed to play at the same time as Nine Inch Nails, and so I wasn't forced to make any decisions. She also cancelled one of my SXSW shows in March, which even back then was barely a surprise. Now her cancelling a show I guess is just old news. Somehow though, I did manage to catch her at another SXSW appearance, and at Bowery. Her other successful NYC shows have been at Joe's Pub and at Highline Ballroom.
Amy Winehouse, Arctic Monkeys, Jamie T, Bat for Lashes, and Maps were among those nominated for this year's UK Mercury Prize. Amy Winehouse is playing Summerstage and touring. Arctic Monkeys are playing Summerstage and touring. Jamie T played a one-off show in Brooklyn last night, and Bat For Lashes and Maps both have upcoming tour dates that I've listed below along with all the nominees...

Tickets are on sale Friday for a September 12th Central Park Summerstage show starring the one and only Amy Winehouse with special guest (blah) Paolo Nutini. It's the first date of a short tour they're going on here in the United States. Can anyone recommend some good Chinese in the area?
Amy plays some festivals in Canada a few days earlier. All tour dates, and more pictures & video of Amy & The Rolling Stones, below....
I know nothing about this band, but file this in the "band that plays MSG may be playing a small venue" category. Somebody told me that "Exposed Youth" at Knitting Factory on June 4th is O.A.R. under a fake name. Google reveals that "Exposed Youth" was O.A.R.'s old name or something.
As you know, Duran Duran is playing a fan club show at Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC on June 17th. I have two pairs of tickets to give away. Do you want to win them? You don't even need to be in the fan club. E-mail BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (subject: Duran), and include a link to a YouTube video from the 80's that you think is awesome. Two winners will be picked and notified via e-mail. Contest ends June 7, 2007 @ noon EST.
And since this post started with an old Rolling Stone cover, here's a picture of that new Amy Winehouse one:

Mos Def @ Highline Ballroom, NYC - May 26, 2007
If you expected to hear Mos Def rip through 'Black on Both Sides', you left the Highline Ballroom disappointed, but if you did leave disappointed Saturday night, well, then you‘re officially excommunicated from the Mos Def community.Thx AC. And in related news, I guess Amy Winehouse is also already in
His performance was that kind of performance - provided you went in with an open mind, and permitted Mos and his band Black Radio the room to breathe, groove, and explore the different areas of funk and jazz that Mos has gravitated towards recently. Once their groove took hold, Mos Def rolled through inspired versions of 'Umi Says', 'Boogie Man Song' and 'Napoleon’s Dynamite'. He even threw in a batch of eclectic covers including a Stevie Wonder and Cyndi Lauper song, Bel Biv Devoe's 'Poison', and a portion of The Pharcyde’s 'Passing Me By'. The real fun and show stopper came when Mos brought out special guest, Q-Tip. Tip led the crowd through the chorus of 'Lyrics To Go' as well as 'Bonita Applebum' before jumping into 'Check the Rhime', with Mos picking up Phife’s lines. You on point Mos? All the time Tip!
“45th At Night” transforms MTV’s famed TRL studio into a nighttime club where cameras take a back seat to the performance and live music thrives. The inaugural episode features Amy Winehouse backed by The Dap-Kings and includes a sizzling collaboration with Mos Def and premieres Friday, June 8th at 11:30pm on MTV. Songs performed include: 'Rehab', 'Back to Black', 'Me & Mr. Jones', & 'You Know I’m No Good'I guess Mos Def called.

Those with Sirius satellite radio can tune into the Blog Radio Memorial Day weekend marathon going on right now on Sirius channel 26 - Left of Center. Nothing but Gorilla vs Bear, Productshop, My Old Kentucky Blog, It's a Trap, and Brooklyn Vegan Blog Radio shows all weekend long. We'd (Sirius, me, whoever) would also like to welcome Aquarium Drunkard to the roster of bloggers with radio shows on Sirius. He starts soon. My show is moving from Tuesdays to Wednesdays. This week my guest is DJ David Bruno (yes, that one). Last week I had on DJ Never Forget (we played a Maccabees remix). Two weeks before that I had on Ryan Freshbread who introduced me to the Amy Winehouse cover that The Arctic Monkeys did. I then meant to post it with his playlist, but I didn't, so you might as well get it at Stereogum who has the track up now. That's it. Thanks!
