The 15th Annual Del Close Marathon went down in NYC from 6/28-6/30, and it was certainly "bigger than ever." With 420 shows on seven different stages, the marathon had no problem filling 56 straight hours with improv. As always, there were college teams, indie teams, local house teams, and mind-blowing team reunions with legendary lineups.
The Press Conference
The weekend kicked off with a press conference at the UCB Chelsea theatre (UCBT) with the original four UCB members (Amy Poehler, Matt Besser, Matt Walsh, and Ian Roberts). Amongst other topics, they premiered the illustrious Comedy Improvisation Manual, a dense comedy "textbook" written by Besser, Walsh, and Roberts. As Roberts put it, "The book took tremendous time to put together because we were painstaking in making sure that this could be understood by someone who's never seen improv and never had improv classes. So, we constantly challenged ourselves to look at it with naïve eyes."
At the DCM party space, other improv celebrities stopped by to hang out, take pictures, and discuss their hopes and fears for the festival. Matt Besser talked about the proliferation of improv culture since the beginning of DCM, saying that "it used to be something where you almost had to explain what it was; now it's something that even our parents know about." Poehler, looking in her element in a UCB Comedy shirt, gave advice to young girls, saying that improv could teach them that "being silly is okay and fun; there's power in enjoying yourself. No one looks stupid if everyone's having fun." Indeed, that mindset certainly set the tone for the rest of DCM15.
AC Newman w/ New Pornographers at Terminal 5 in 2010 (more by Greg Cristman)
NYC comedy duo Wrestling Team (aka Mark Bisi and Andy Beckerman) do a live taping of their Beginnings interview podcast at UCBEast on the second Tuesday of every month, and new episodes premiere every Thursday (listen for free on iTunes). This month's live taping, which is TONIGHT (9/11) at UCBEast, will feature Mark and Andy talking to Lizz Winstead (co-creator of The Daily Show and Air America Radio) and David Rees (Get Your War On, How to Sharpen Pencils), and the musical guest will be New Pornographer AC Newman. $5 tickets for tonight's show are available.
Tonight's show happens about a month before AC Newman begins his tour with The Mynabirds which comes to NYC on October 22 at Bowery Ballroom (tickets) and October 24 at Maxwell's (tickets). Newman's new album, Shut Down the Streets, is out October 9.
Meanwhile, you can also catch Lizz Winstead in NYC when she brings her Free Or Die book tour to Brooklyn's Galapagos Art Space on September 24 (tickets) and Manhattan's 92YTribeca on October 3 (tickets). She'll also do her 'Bang The Dumb Slowly: The Year In Politics' show at Gramercy Theatre on November 5, the day before Election Day. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
David Rees has other upcoming NYC appearances too. He'll be coming to Union Hall on September 19 and 20. The 9/19 show is a free 'Comedians With Books' show with Janeane Garofalo, which is part of the Brooklyn Book Festival, and the 9/20 show is a 'Librarian Olympics' show, which tickets are on sale for. David will also do a BCRG-presented show this week a bit outside of NYC at Beacon, NY's Hudson Valley Auctioneers on September 15 with Bobby Tisdale (writer for Late NIght with JImmy Fallon among other things), Beth Hoyt, and musical guest Eleanor Friedberger. The Beacon, NY show is Eleanor's only upcoming show at the moment.
