Cat Power & Angel Haze played Terminal 5 (setlist), teamed up for a Ryan Hemsworth remix (stream it)
Cat Power @ T5, 1/29/2013 (via @theconstantwanderer)

...the lights went down and Cat Power's backing band wound up with a slight guitar line that seemed to bring Chan Marshall out of the shadows. She had let her Mohawk grow out--no photographs were allowed during the set, so please bear with textual descriptors--but her hair was still short and bleached-blond, with darkly imperious eyebrows that arched over the back of the room. If you've never heard it before (I hadn't), Marshall's voice in person is only slightly less burnished than on record, not necessarily always the magnificent, ineffable thing I had been expecting. It was also difficult to hear contours and nuances due to Sun's stickier beats ("Sun"), vocal distortion ("Silent Machine"), and the simple fact that her voice was often sunk low in the mix ("Cherokee" and "Human Being"). When you could hear it above everything else, however, on older piano-driven cuts like "I Don't Blame You" or "Bully," it rose in her throat raw and untrammeled, transfixing everyone enough to shush themselves. - [Village Voice]Cat Power's current tour hit Terminal 5 last night and we've got the setlist to the sold-out show below. Also on the bill was rapper Angel Haze, who also appears on a new, Ryan Hemsworth remix of Chan's single "Manhattan" which you can stream below.
Openers for the evening were SISU, the band fronted by Sandra Vu who also plays drums in Dum Dum Girls (Jules Dum DUm is also in the bad). You can catch them Thursday night (1/31) at Glasslands with "duo" versions of Crocodiles and Punks on Mars, as well as a solo set from Cassie Ramone. Tickets are still available.
You can catch Ryan Hemsworth live on his upcoming tour with Daedelus and Salvia.
Cat Power remix and setlist are below...
Angel Haze on "Werkin' Girls" set (more by Guy Eppel)

Brooklyn rapper Angel Haze, having survived a Twitter fight with Azealia Banks, will open for Major Lazer on U.S. tour in March. While there are no NYC dates announced, Angel will be playing out city fairly soon, opening for Cat Power at Terminal 5 on January 29. Tickets are still available.
Other than her spat with Azealia, Haze has been having a pretty good run the last few months. She was one of the longlist nominees in BBC's Sound of 2013 poll and worked with Erikah Badu on her Classick mixtape (streamable here).
All Angel Haze tour dates are below...

Jacques Renault

Pitchfork posted a story yesterday on The New Electronic Brooklyn Underground, where they highlighted the thriving dance parties, labels, and producers that have been coming up in Brooklyn for a few years now and have been experiencing even greater success lately. Some of what they highlighted, like record label UNO and especially their artist Mykki Blanco, have been working their way up so much, they may not even be able to be considered "underground" anymore.
Mykki Blanco is also part of NYC's rising underground rap scene, and along with Angel Haze, CJ Fly, Kirk Knight, and The Underachievers, Mykki is being featured in Spit Gold Under An Empire, a new documentary on the NY rap scene directed by Montreal's Emily Kai Bock, who directed Grimes' "Oblivion" video (via FACT). You can watch the trailer video below.
But back to the electronic stuff. UNO is also responsible for putting out releases by other great artists like Jacques Greene, CFCF, Fatima Al Qadiri, Arca, Gobby, and more. Jacques Greene, who resides in Montreal, is on tour of the US now and he'll be in NYC for a show on February 9 at 88 Palace with Dark Disco and Martyn. All Jacques Greene dates are listed below.
Another party highlighted in the Pitchfork article was Let's Play House, which is a party run by Jacques Renault (not to be confused with Jacques Greene) and Nik Mercer. They've got two upcoming events this month -- first they'll do a free one on January 24 at The Woods (48 S 4 St) with Stockholm producer HNNY (who also plays Le Baron on 1/22 while he's in NYC), and then a co-presented party with The Dog & Pony show at Le Poisson Rouge on January 26 with The Revenge (UK), Mark E, Jacques Renault, and Paul Raffaele (tickets). The flyers for those shows are below. Jacques Renault also has a show tonight (1/18) at The Counting Room (44 Berry St) with Miss Sabado and Son of Sound. Admission is $10 at the door or $5 with RSVP to resonate@misssabado.com.
Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin

The article also highlights the Mister Saturday Night party, which is run by Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin. They have a bunch of parties coming up, and one of the most interesting ones is FaltyDL (who has an album coming out next week) at House of Yes on January 26. More info on that show and a list of all upcoming Mister Saturday NIght events are below.
The article also talks about Aurora Halal's Mutual Dreaming party, which doesn't have any upcoming events at the moment, but you may remember it from the Hieroglyphic Being show at 285 Kent over the summer.

Angel Haze

As you may know, Angel Haze and Azealia Banks got in a Twitter fight yesterday (1/3) which resulted in Angel Haze releasing a diss track aimed at Azealia. Azealia Banks responded today with the Machinedrum-produced "No Problems" and tweeted, "Lol I def used that energy to write a fly new jam tho. It's not even really a diss anymore! Haha !!!"
...well Angel Haze thinks it's still a diss because she already responded with a second diss track called "Shut the Fuck Up" and the message, "you get an unmastered diss...you aint worth my studio time." Choice lyric: "How much twitter feed does it take to wanna make you get into the studio and come up with a different flow, not try to recreate '212,' the only shit you know." Damn.
Listen to both tracks below...
Haim (with Palma Violets) on the cover of this week's NME

Los Angeles sisterly trio Haim have topped the BBC's Sound of 2013 poll, beating out competition like AlunaGeorge (#2), Angel Haze (#3), Laura Mvula (#4) and CHVRCHES (#5), not to mention The Weeknd, Savages, Palma Violets and others. Previous BBC Sound Of poll winners include Michael Kiwanuka (2012), Little Boots (2009), Mika (2007), The Bravery (2005) and 50 Cent (2003). You can watch a half-hour BBC special that features the top 5 acts from the poll below.
Meanwhile, Haim, who played a headlining Brooklyn show in December, have a few tour dates opening for Mumford & Sons, including two shows at Camden, NJ's Susquehanna Bank Center on February 16 and 17 (both are sold-out), and their second of two Barclays Center shows (2/12) (also sold out). Dates are listed below, along with that video.

Things move quick on the internet, including fights. It was just this morning that Azealia Banks tweeted, "Seriously, if you were not born and raised in NY.... DON'T CLAIM NY. YOU ARE NOT A NEW YORKER." Angel Haze apparently took this to be a direct shot at her and her track "New York" and a Twitter fight ensued. (Some of the exchange was deleted, but Complex has the whole thing here.) Angel Haze posted a new track at 4PM on her SoundCloud called "On the Edge," a dis track absolutely pointed at Azelea, following up by saying she banged it out in, "20 minutes. It took me nothing but a hairflip...a real one." Zing! You can stream it below. A comeback track by Banks seems likely, no?
Meanwhile, Azealia Banks recently released a new track, "BBD," from her oft-delayed debut album Broke with Expensive Taste (currently due out February 12), and you can stream that below too.
by Bill Pearis

Pitchfork just posted their much anticipated list of the top 100 tracks of 2012. The #1 slot went to... Grimes! Whether you thought the whole of her album Visions was good or not, it was hard to deny the charms of "Oblivion." (Having that great video didn't hurt either.) Do you think it deserved to top the list? If not then what song should've?
You can check out P4K's entire hot 100 of 2012 below.

Savages @ BVCMJ 2012 (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)

The 15-name nominee "longlist" is up for the BBC's "Sound of 2013" poll that includes The Weeknd, Savages, HAIM, King Krule, Palma Violets, AlunaGeorge and Angel Haze. Full list is below. If you're wondering how The Weeknd, who have sold out Terminal 5 here in NYC, can be up for something like this, here's some of the criteria:
They must not have had a UK top 20 single or album by 11 November 2012.The nomination/voting panel is made up of " newspaper and magazine editors and critics, producers and presenters from music radio and televison, website editors and bloggers" if you were wondering. Last year's winner was Michael Kiwanuka. They can be from any musical genre and any country.
They must not already be famous i.e. generally known by the UK public, (e.g. member of a hit band going solo, or soap star). They must not have got through to the quarter, semi or final rounds of UK reality shows such as X Factor in the last 3 years (i.e. 2010 onwards).
They must not have featured in the BBC Sound of list previously (See an alphabetical list of previous nominees here)
"New" means new to the general public. They may have been around for a while if you believe they are ready to step up to the next level of quality & recognition.
You can catch nominees HAIM at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday (12/15, sold out) and Palma Violets will be in NYC next month.

What else?
by Andrew Sacher
Angel Haze at Villain - 10/19/12 (via @wolverskulkbrecht)

You already know what I thought of Merchandise's set at the Pitchfork showcase at Villain in Brooklyn on Friday night (10/19). Here's a bit on the rest of the stuff I saw.
Rapper Angel Haze was on when I walked in and she was probably the best act I saw at the whole show. She delivers with a fast, fierce flow and is a way confident performer. She has a style that will definitely appeal to hip hop purists, eschewing the slow flow of cloud rap and only using pre-recorded vocals if it benefited the song, not as a vice. But though she ignores current trends, she isn't overtly a throwback rapper either. Angel Haze is just a refreshing reminder of the levels that rap can be taken, something that really comes across in her powerful new song.
Hundred Waters at Villain - 10/19/12 (via @twodegreesinbebop)

Up next was Hundred Waters, one of my most anticipated bands for this year's CMJ. I'm not trying to draw any grand conclusions about their signing to Skrillex's label, which I'm still scratching my head about, but I will say that after seeing them it makes a little more sense why he would be interested. Though their album reminds me of a slightly more electronic Joanna Newsom, they're a lot louder and bassier at their shows. There's a noticeable split on stage -- the two girls stay on the left and if it was just them, they'd sound like a forgotten psych folk duo from the late '60s, and on the other side of the stage, the three guys handle drums, bass, and synths, vibing like an edgy jamtronica band. It's a weird mix, but it often meshes really well.
Hundred Waters were followed by Le1f, who I had seen the night earlier at the Studio at Webster Hall. Le1f fit in a lot better on this lineup than he did with the mostly hardcore rap lineup of the Studio show, and the larger crowd were way more into him in this environment. I'm still more a fan of his head knockers and the slower ones wash over me a bit, but still a fun set to watch.
Daughn GIbson was up next, and like Hundred Waters, his strong point is his eclectic mix of sounds. He played mostly off of his debut album, All Hell, which came out earlier this year via White Denim (he's since signed to Sub Pop) and combines gothic country with downtempo electronic music. While other beatmaker/singers like James Blake prefer to sit at their piano and let the music do the talking, Daughn is a natural born frontman and couldn't help but perform like a melodramatic barroom singer.
Then Merchandise played, after which I stuck around for a few songs by Holy Other. His new album, Held, is one of my favorite electronic releases of the year and Holy Other is really on some next level shit, but admittedly isn't much of a live act.
After I left, the crowd was treated to sets by METZ, DIIV, Joey Bada$$, and Death Grips. You can watch some videos from the show below.

Main Attrakionz at BV-SXSW 2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

Earlier this month, we mentioned that iPhone/Android app Mobli was throwing a CMJ party with Heems, Sasha Go Hard, Kitty Pryde, Weekend Money, SAFE, The Underachievers, and Party Supplies. That party was supposed to happen today at Delinquency but that venue has since been shut down so the whole lineup (minus The Underachievers and Party Supplies) is merging with the Young One Records showcase, which happens tonight (10/17) at 285 Kent. That showcase, in addition to including the names mentioned above, will have Main Attrakionz, Kool AD, Deniro Farrar, Supreme Cuts, Cities Aviv, Bryant Dope, Ryan Hemsworth, and CBG. SAFE and Ryan Hemsworth are DJing between sets, the rest of the acts are playing live. The show flier and set times are below.
That 285 Kent show is a pretty stacked bill for hip hop, and if you're into stacked hip hop shows like that one, you'll also probably want to check out the Mass Appeal party at Gramercy on Friday (10/19) with Asher Roth, Prodigy (of Mobb Deep), The Alchemist, Large Professor, Mr. Muthafuckin' exquire, Roc Marciano, Boldy James, Ninja Sonik, Bodega Bamz, Alexander Spit, Angel Haze and Timeless Youth. That one's free with RSVP to RSVP@massappeal.com but entry is based on capacity. The flier for this show is below.
As mentioned, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire also plays SOB's on Thursday (10/18) and an MTV Studio at Webster Hall the same day. That studio show is with Big K.R.I.T. and LE1F, and when we first mentioned it, a "special guest" was billed who has since been revealed as Killer Mike. Tickets for that one are still available.
That MTV show is an early show (5:30 doors) and after that there's a late show with Chuck Inglish (of The Cool Kids), Ninjasonik, ASAP TyY, Blvckalfred, Vault Boys, MopTop, Chase N Cashe, GDP, Vyle, and Curtains. Tickets for that one are still available.
Cities Aviv, in addition to the Young One show, has other CMJ shows, including the Flowerbooking CMJ showcase at Knitting Factory on Friday (10/19) with Unicorn Kid, Ki:Theory, Devin, Ghost Wave, and Talk Normal (tickets) and the Bond Music Group/PopGun show at Cameo Gallery on Friday (10/19) (late show) with Steven A. Clark, Lushlife, Dark Sister, and Pegasus Warning (tickets).
He also plays the free BrooklynVegan day party at Public Assembly on Saturday (10/20) with The Orwells, Eternal Summers, and the rest of the lineup coming soon!
While we're talking about good hip hop shows during CMJ, don't forget the Converse Rubber Tracks/Fool's Gold 5th anniversary show at Music Hall of WIlliamsburg on Saturday (10/20) with Ghostface Killah, A-Trak, Flosstradamus, Donnis, Nick Catchdubs, World's Fair, Troy Ave, and special guests. That one's totally free, first come, first served.
Showcase flier and set times for the Young One/Mobli show are below.
Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire

Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire is set to release the Power & Passion EP on November 6 via his new home at Universal Republic Records. That EP includes lead single, "Telephuck," which features El-P (who eXquire recently toured with) on the beat and Gucci Mane with a guest verse. You can stream that track below. The EP also features production by SpaceGhostPurrp, Harry Fraud, and others.
Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire will be playing some local shows during CMJ including the previously discussed Leaders of the New Cool CMJ party at SOB's on October 18 with Casey Veggies and others (tickets). That same day (10/18), he'll play an MTV-presented show at The Studio at Webster Hall with Big K.R.I.T., LE1F, and special guests. And on October 20, he'll play the Tumblr CMJ showcase at Knitting Factory with Doldrums, Troy Ave, Prince Rama, and The So So Glos. Tickets for the Studio show and the Knitting Factory show are on sale now.
eXquire also plays a free Mass Appeal party at Gramercy Theater on October 19 with The Alchemist, Prodigy, Roc Marciano, Ninjasonik, Bodega Bamz, Angel Haze, and more. You can get in with your CMJ badge or if you don't have one, just RSVP to rsvp@massappeal.com. The flier for this show is below.
As mentioned, Big K.R.I.T. also plays the Cinematic Music Group, Ecko Unltd & XXL Mag showcase at SOB's (10/18), the night of the Studio show, with Joey Bada$$ & Pro Era, Smoke DZA, Fat Trel, and others. K.R.I.T. also produced and is featured on the new Big SANT song, "Say That Shit," which you can stream below.
All lists of dates and song streams are below.

Angel Haze just released the video for her single "Werkin Girls" that is equal parts cute and creepy. The clip was shot on location in Queens by two young directors, Alex Lee and Kyle Wightman, who make up a production outfit called Brthr Films. You can watch the video below and check out a gallery of shots from the set.
As mentioned, Angel Haze will be performing next week at Pitchfork's CMJ showcase at new Williamsburg venue Villain that goes down October 18 and also has Death Grips, LE1F, DIIV, Joey Bada$$, Holy Other, METZ, Merchandise, Daughn Gibson, and Hundred Waters on the line-up.
Death Grips at Coachella 2012 (more by David Andrako)

As mentioned, Death Grips are also playing a NPR-presented CMJ show with Flying Lotus at Le Poisson Rouge on October 17. That bill also includes Ali Shaheed Muhammad (of A Tribe Called Quest) and since we last spoke Buke & Gase were added as well. The show is free with "confirmed RSVP", which opens TODAY (10/9) at 10:45 AM (aka really soon). Act quick.
We already mentioned that Death Grips and LE1F are playing Pitchfork's CMJ showcase at new Brooklyn warehouse venue Villain on October 19 (50 N 3rd St). Now the full lineup is out and it also includes DIIV, Joey Bada$$, Holy Other, METZ, Merchandise, Daughn Gibson, Hundred Waters, and Angel Haze. The show goes from 8PM to 3 AM and is totally free to the public, but there will also be 200 priority tickets being given away at the Topman store (478 Broadway in SoHo) "on Wednesday and Thursday between 10 AM and 9 PM."
Pitchfork is also teaming up with MoMA PS1 to present a show in the VW Performance Dome on October 20 (22-25 Jackson Ave, Long Island City) with Andy Stott, Chairlift, and Doldrums, which runs from 3-6 PM. That show is free with museum admission.
Pitchfork's metal column, Show No Mercy, is also presenting an unofficial showcase during CMJ.
The fliers for both Pitchfork shows are below...

Screaming Females made a video for their song "It All Means Nothing" in which Marissa Paternoster's shredding skills expand to human flesh. Zombies! Watch it below.
Speaking of Screaming Females, you can see big prints of them in action and other artists at the BV photo exhibit "480 Pixels" which is currently on display at 92YTribeca through September 6. Gallery hours today are till 3 PM.

Kreayshawn is set to release her debut album, Somethin 'Bout Kreay, on September 18, instead of August 14 as originally planned, via Columbia and it will feature guest spots from 2 Chainz, Diplo, Sissy Nobby, Kid Cudi, and others. That's the cover art above and you can check out the tracklist below. In support of it she'll be going on the ALL GIRL aka GROUP HUG TOUR with Rye Rye, Honey Cocaine, and Chippy Nonstop. That tour hits NYC on November 15 at Irving Plaza. Tickets for that show are on sale now. The full list of dates is still TBA.
In related news, Azealia Banks, who dissed Kreayshawn on twitter earlier this year, recently apologized, tweeting, "I apologize for coming down on you so hard earlier this year," and Kreayshawn responded, "It's all G! I fux with you music above all!" Kreayshawn then spoke to MTV about the apology:
"I went to her Mermaid Ball show in LA because a lot of my homegirls were performing," Kreayshawn said. "She ended up hitting me up a couple of weeks after and said, 'I really wanna publicly apologize,' and I [thought that was] really dope."Azealia Banks also hinted at collaboration with Kreay, and wants to throw Angel Haze in the mix too."I think it's cool because there's so many girls looking up to everyone that all the beef tears our fans apart," the rapper continued. People feel like, 'I have to be this person's fan and hate on this person.' So I think it shows that you can forgive people, you can apologize to people, you can realize you're wrong and it shows camaraderie for all girls. It's for girl power."
Angel Haze, like Azealia Banks, got her start in NYC on a Beggars-related label (Azealia on XL, Angel on True Panther), and she recently announced that she has signed to major label, Universal (Island in the UK), making her labelmates with Azealia Banks. As mentioned, Angel Haze's next NYC show happens on August 29 at SOB's. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
Meanwhile, Azealia Banks' debut LP for Universal, Broke With Expensive Taste, which was supposed to come out this fall, has been pushed back to February, 2013. Check out her recent video for "Van Vogue" off the 1991 EP, which was released in June, below.

Azealia Banks has also recently made a fan out of Shirley Manson of Garbage (who are reunited with a new album and have been touring all year). In an interview with IFC, Shirley was asked about her opinion on the rise of female rappers:
My favorite out of those is Azealia Banks. The first time I heard "212? I almost died. It felt dangerous and exciting and really fresh and I have a little crush on Kreayshawn, too. But I don't know if those girls are getting time on the radio. It's great that they are getting played via YouTube or Tumblr, but I want them on the radio. Like in the 90s when Missy Elliott was getting played. You know, it's hard out there right now for women with attitude.Garbage's remaining tour dates, which include some shows with Screaming Females, are over at BV Austin.

Speaking of rappers getting played via YouTube or Tumblr, Kitty Pryde (pictured with Doom above) is on tour and she plays NYC TONIGHT (8/22) at Santos Party House (she hears Andrew WK owns it). Since we last spoke, Lakutis (who also plays as part of a stacked lineup at Glasslands in September) was added to tonight's bill. Tickets for the show are still available.
Also, next week at Santos (8/30) is the next Shortcuts party with Kreayshawn collaborator Riff Raff and Meyhem Lauren (Angel Haze played the last one). Tickets for that show are still available.
Speaking of Meyhem Lauren (a man) and rappers signing to major labels (Action Bronson), Action Bronson, Meyhem Lauren, and Tanya Morgan (a group of men) play a free NYC show this week and we're giving away VIP tickets.
House of Ladosha, who play 285 Kent on Saturday (8/25), also play Santos next month (9/20) with SSION and TEETH (tickets).
LE1F has been added to the upcoming Big Freedia show on a boat. Tickets are still on sale and stay tuned for a ticket contest for this show coming later in another BrooklynVegan post.

As mentioned, NYC rapper Angel Haze dropped her new EP, Reservation, earlier this month. It's a great and listen and you can stream or download the entire thing for free HERE. Sounds like she's not wasting any time on its followup though, because according to a post on her facebook page, she's "in the studio with Rudimental out in the UK."
Angel Haze played a release party for the EP at Santos earlier this month (7/19) (how was that?) and now she's set to play a Hot 97-presented show in NYC at S.O.B.'s on August 28 hosted by Hot 97 DJ Peter Rosenberg. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
The official video for "New York" drops this Wednesday (8/1). A stream of that track and the SOB's show flier are below.

Das Racist cohort Lakutis, who appeared on Das Racist's 2010 LP, Sit Down, Man, and who released a free EP last year on the group's Greedhead label with production and guest spots from the members, will be opening the two NYC area shows on Das Racist member Kool A.D.'s upcoming tour with Fat Tony. We already mentioned that the tour includes Mercury Lounge on July 30, and more dates have since been revealed, including a NJ show at Stanhope House on August 5. Tickets are available for the Mercury Lounge show and the Stanhope show.
Like Das Racist, Lakutis doesn't rap without a sense of humor. If you can't tell from song titles like "I'm Better Than Everybody" or "Ja Rule," then lend your eyes to the music video below of "Pool Party," during which Lakutis spends the entire time smoking a blunt behind a giant roll of toilet paper while delivering tongue-in-cheek sexed up lines about "hanging with Mila Kunis in the pool" into a cell phone. Lakutis' EP, I'm In The Forest, can be streamed and downloaded for free at the Mishka bandcamp.
As mentioned, Kool A.D. was orginally scheduled to play the Shortcuts party at Santos tonight (7/19) with Angel Haze but has since dropped off. Angel Haze's Reservation EP is out now and can be streamed/downloaded for free HERE.
The "Pool Party" video and a list of all dates are below...
