Q-Tip leading protests in Times Square last night (photo via @alphajada)
Q-Tip

Last night it was announced that the grand jury decided not to indict Ferguson, MO police Officer Darren Wilson in the August shooting and death of 18-year-old Michael Brown. Protests sprung up all over the country. In NYC, Q-Tip lead protests in Times Square chanting "Whose streets? Our Streets!" and "Don't shoot! Hands Up!" Instagram videos of him in Times Square can be watched below.

Meanwhile, much much closer to the center of the story, Run the Jewels were performing in St. Louis, Missouri. Killer Mike, who sang about the police "terrorizing whoever, but mostly black boys" in his hyper-political song "Reagan," gave a moving, tearful speech during their set. "I knew it was coming...I knew it wasn't going to be good, but you motherfuckers got me today. You kicked me on my ass today, because I have a 20-year-old son, I have a 12-year-old son and I'm so afraid for them." You can watch it below.

Macklemore also took part in a protest in Ferguson, which Seattle King5 News has a clip of here.

Lots of other musicians expressed their feelings on social media. "I'm heartbroken over the news of no indictment in Ferguson. Let's all pray for peace," Pharrell Williams tweeted. Talib Kweli tweeted, "I feel really bad for the family of Mike Brown. To my brothers & sisters in Ferguson my heart is with you & I will join you soon."

A few more:

Azealia Banks also went on a long Twitter rant about it, saying, "What makes it even worse is the fact that I sleep with white men..... LOL" and "I might have to kill one of these crackers in their sleep !!" but then "Lol, I'm joking." She also got more serious and said things like, "But something seriously has to be done about this shit. I don't want to hear about another unarmed black kid being shot by the damn cops. It's so discouraging, just as a young black person, to know that people like me can be murdered and have there be no real justice." Read many more of her tweets here.

Not every musician was against the ruling. Gun expert Ted Nugent tweeted, "DarrenWilson did good MichaelBrown did bad justice is served."

Video of Killer Mike's speech in St. Louis and Q-Tip in Times Square, below...

Keep A Child Alive's 11th annual Black Ball benefit will go down at NYC's Hammerstein Ballroom on October 30 this year. Hosted once again by Keep A Child Alive co-founder Alicia Keys, the event will feature performances from Talking Head David Byrne, rapper Angel Haze, Keys herself and more TBA. About the event, David Byrne told Billboard:

Many many years ago my friend Leigh Blake, co-founder of Keep a Child Alive, approached me about being part of a charity record called Red Hot & Blue. It was a great experience, and it had the side effect of opening my ears to the music of Cole Porter! So, when she approached me about participating in this year's Black Ball, Keep a Child Alive's annual fundraiser hosted by Alicia Keys, I immediately said yes. I'm flattered and excited.
Tickets for the benefit are on sale now.

Keep A Child Alive "support[s] innovative, community-led responses that increase access to life-saving HIV treatment and care, nutritious food, and loving support for children and families living with and affected by HIV in Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, and India."

England's Glastonbury Festival is pretty much the forefather to all crazy worldwide "20,000 people standing in a field" festivals we have today. It includes Arcade Fire, Jack White, Dolly Parton (!), Elbow, Disclosure, Bryan Ferry, Massive Attack, Pixies, M.I.A., Dexys Midnight Runners, Kasabian, Lily Allen and loads more. Angel Haze at SXSW 2013 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Angel Haze

You may have heard that earlier this week rapper Angel Haze tried to pull a Death Grips and leak her new album Dirty Gold as a reaction to being unhappy with the way her label Island/Republic was handling its release. She uploaded the entire album to her Soundcloud page, but it was deleted pretty much immediately. Her angry Twitter rant (via Pitchfork) read:

It's so annoying that my label could tell me that if I fucking finished my album before the summer it would be out this year. I have gone to bat for this music. I have gone to bat for myself. I have literally sat fucking sleepless and starved crying over this shit. I turned down so much shit to be sure that I could finish this album because actually wanting something to me means doing all you can to be sure that it's attainable. I stopped arguing my point. Stopped giving a fuck about everything. Let these other ditsy bitches disrespect me. I turned my fucking cheek because MUSIC IS ALL I FUCKING HAVE. And I know that's the same for some of you. I did everything I could for you. I did not promise an album and not deliver, unlike every fucking one else. I sat my ass down and came up with this music WHEN I HAD NOTHING. Taking shit on the chin does not mean sitting back and letting the world beat and suck you fucking dry. It's knowing something is bigger than anything you are or will ever be and sitting the fuck down and complying to get shit done. I'm sorry if I seem angry. But these are my dreams. The only thing I have in my life. Imagine having the only reason you're alive being the very thing straining your existence. Ughhhh... So sorry to Island/Republic Records, but fuck you. I got here doing this for my fans and if you guys don't feel the same, it won't stop me. Idc what happens after this. They will get the music they were promised. And you guys JUST MAY LEARN TO KEEP YOUR FUCKING WORD.
This didn't entirely come out of nowhere either. A Billboard article from earlier this month reads:
[Angel's manager Nicola] Carson keeps checking Haze's SoundCloud page every morning. "If I didn't have Angel on lockdown, she'd just put [the album] up there," Carson says with a laugh. "She wants people to hear it now. She's so caught up in the moment and the creative space. She doesn't get caught up in the politics."
Even if Angel wasn't able to keep the leak on soundcloud, it looks like she got her wish to have the album released by the end of the year, as Island/Republic have now moved the release date from March 3 to December 30. Regarding the new release date, Angel writes on Twitter:
Behind every rebel is a fucking reason. Just want to say thank you guys for your support today. Thanks to those who heard the album and fucked with it. Thanks to everyone who stood up for me. My labels didn't think that I would do it, but I did. It's hard to put at risk everything I've spent this year working on but I had to for both me and you guys. No one should ever be afforded the opportunity to fuck with your dreams. REGARDLESS OF WHO THEY ARE. They do not own you or your faith or your future and because of what you guys helped me show them. My labels have agreed to release Dirty Gold December 30th. Uk & US. (Rest of the world, we are coming for you as well). Thank you all. Night
That makes three major releases for December 2013.

Listen to two songs from Dirty Gold below...

Angel Haze

Angel Haze's much-anticipated debut album has been a long time coming, but it looks like we'll finally be getting the record, titled Dirty Gold, in 2014. It was just given a release date of March 3 (via Island Records), and the album artwork (above) and tracklist (below) were revealed too. It features previously-released single "Echelon (It's My Way)" and the brand new single "A Tribe Called Red," both of which you can hear below.

Angel Haze at Lollapalooza 2013 (more by James Richards IV)
Angel Haze

Rapper Angel Haze has still not announced a release date for her much-anticipated debut LP, Dirty Gold, but last month she kicked off her #30Gold series, a month-long series of covers and freestyles over other songs to precede the album. The newest #30Gold installment is the cover of young British pop breakout John Newman's "Love Me Again." You can stream it below, along with covers/freestyles of Lana Del Rey, Miley Cyrus, Macklemore, A$AP Ferg, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Jay Z, and Kanye West.

In her "Same Love" (Macklemore) freestyle, Angel Haze addresses her sexuality, rapping:

At age thirteen, my mom knew I wasn't straight
She didn't understand, but she had so much to say
She sat me on the couch, looked me straight in my face
And said you'll burn in hell or probably die of AIDS
It's funny now, but at thirteen it was pain
To be almost sure of who you are and have it ripped away
And I'm sorry if it's too real for some of you to fathom
But hate for who you love is not exactly what you'd imagine
And I guess it was disastrous
Because everything that happened afterwards was just madness
Locked away for two years to keep me on the inside
Because she'd rather see a part of me die than me thrive
And it's tougher when it's something you can't deny
And ignorance teaches us it's something you decide
You're driven by your choices, an optical illusion
Here's to understanding it's not always confusion
Read the rest of the lyrics below. Following that song's release, she did an interview with Fusion TV, saying that if she to label herself (though she'd prefer not to) it'd be "pansexual." "To identify as pansexual to me means to just want love and to want a connection with anyone you can find it with," she said.

That freestyle isn't the only genuinely moving thing Angel Haze has done in recent memory. Last week, she posted a video of herself reading a poem she wrote titled "You Broke My Heart." You can watch that below, and to say the least, you'll feel her pain.

Later this month, Angel Haze will be appearing live in New York (you know, the city she runs) at Webster Hall on November 21 for a Girls Night Out party. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Streams, poem video, and "Same Love" lyrics below...

Lollapalooza Day 3 - 8/4/2013
Lollapalooza Day 3 - 8/4/2013
Lollapalooza Day 3 - 8/4/2013

Even Goth-rockers love singalongs. After the opening synth chords, the Cure's Robert Smith begins to belt out "Just Like Heaven" and is instantly joined by a Grant Park choir numbering in the tens of thousands. Smith and his bandmates sprinkle Cure classics such as "Pictures of You" and "Friday I'm in Love" through a set that continues the weekend's '80s nostalgia theme, begun by New Order and Nine Inch Nails. Smith is in fine voice, and he even pulls off a few interpretive dance moves -- a rare bout of friskiness from a singer who still sports frazzled hair, eye shadow and lipstick. It's become his trademark, and it's turned Smith somewhat timeless -- an ageless figure still singing about a type of loss, heartache and yearning that never dissipates. [Chicago Tribune]
Lollapalooza 2013 wrapped up yesterday (8/4) with sets from Cat Power, Phoenix, The Cure, Vampire Weekend, Alt-J, Angel Haze, DIIV, Bear Mountain and more. Pictures of those (and other) artists are in this post, and we've got a second set of Sunday pics HERE on the way.

Lollapalooza 2013 happens this weekend (August 2 - 4) in Chicago's Grant Park (and some of it will stream online). We'll be there watching bands on all the stages and hosting them in the Soundwave Tent every day from 1 PM - 3 PM (and from 12:40 on Saturday).

The Lolla line-up is pretty great this year, full of big names with a lot of choices (and the occasional tough decision to be made between competing stages). Here are thirteen bands (plus a few more) we don't want to miss....

Rudimental

UK dance quartet Rudimental aren't too far removed from fellow Brits Disclosure -- in fact, both groups have collaborated with singer Sinead Harnett (also, just listen to "Baby") -- though while Disclosure almost perfectly blend mainstream and underground dance music, Rudimental do tend to lean more on the pop side. Some of the production veers towards American EDM, and while they've got choice vocalists like Sinead Harnett, and even more interestingly, Angel Haze, they've also got a track with Internet Explorer commercial soundtracking dude Alex Clare.

That said, similarly to a group like Bear Mountain, Rudimental use their mainstream appeal well, and I'd rather see this tearing up the charts than some of the other EDM-inspired pop you see on there. Plus, while Rudimental do have elements of the current house craze, they also set themselves apart by throwing '90s-style drum n bass breakbeats into about half their songs.

Rudimental put out their debut album, Home, in the UK earlier this year, and it will finally be getting a US release next week (8/6) via Big Beat Records. You can listen to the entire album (and read a track-by-track interview) over at SPIN, and stream six of its twelve tracks below.

Rudimental are on tour this year, and they'll be heading to North America this August for some festival appearances at Outside Lands, Made In America, and Osheaga. They'll also be stopping in NYC to open for Emeli Sande (who sings on their album) at her Rumsey Playfield show (8/28) in Central Park. Tickets for that show are still available.

All Rudimental dates are listed, along with those song streams, below...

We're still waiting on the debut album from rapper Angel Haze, Dirty Gold, and while details are still sparse, Angel just released a "not final version" of a track that's supposed to appear on the album with production from Polaris Prize shortlisted A Tribe Called Red. Quicksand @ Webster Hall recently (more by Rebecca Reed) Quicksand

We get a lot of great free shows here in NYC (like The Walkmen and Solange as part of Northside this weekend) but we have to admit this week of free all-ages shows Converse has lined up at San Francisco club Slim's later this month is pretty crazy (though they may be pretty hard to get into). We'd happily spend the whole week there if we could. The line-ups are:

Converse Represent series in San Francisco

Jun 23 - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, DIIV, Metz, Tamaryn, The She's

JUN 24 -Deltron 3030, Juicy J, Blackalicious, Angel Haze, Special Guest

JUN 25 - Hot Chip, Tycho, Blackbird Blackbird, Social Studies

JUN 26 - Quicksand, Mastodon, High On Fire, Saviours, Hot Lunch

JUN 27 - Suicidal Tendencies, Rocket From The Crypt, Ceremony, Special Guests

The only way to go is to fill out the entry form before June 18 and "winning ticket holders will be notified via email soon after with instructions on how and when to retrieve their tickets." All events, "which lead up to the grand opening of the Converse San Francisco retail store on June 28", will take place at Slim's in San Francisco.

Meanwhile, for those in the Five Boroughs (and surrounding area) browse our NYC show calendar for more upcoming free shows.

Schoolboy Q at Best Buy Theater - 5/21/13 (via Kellen Dengler)
Schoolboy Q

Thanks to TDE's recent success, Q found himself as the most established performer at the Freshman show. With no one to accompany him on stage, he fared better in the larger crowd as a solo artist, breezing through tracks from Habits & Contradictions and throwback collaborations with A$AP Rocky. At one point, he asked Kendrick Lamar to join him but laughed at the audience members who fell for his joke. Fittingly, he won the crowd back with his charisma by asking them the title of his upcoming album. "Oxymoron!" they screamed back. And this was done four times over. [XXL]
The 2013 XXL Freshman Class, including Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson, Angel Haze, and more, all came to NYC for a show at Best Buy Theater last night (5/21). You can check out a video of Schoolboy Q playing "My Hatin' Joint" at the show, below.

As mentioned in yesterday's What's Going On? post, Action Bronson made a video for his Harry Fraud-produced song, "Strictly 4 My Jeeps." If you missed it, you can watch that video below. Riff Raff stars in the video, and as discussed, he plays a Scion A/V show in Brooklyn at Coco 66 tonight (5/22) with Stalley and Smoke DZA. Entrance to that show had to be gained through Scion's contest which has since ended.

Schoolboy Q and Ab-Soul are both members of the group Black Hippy (which also includes Kendrick Lamar and Jay Rock), and that whole group is playing the traveling Rock the Bells Festival which hits the NYC-area on October 4-5 at the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, NJ. Tickets for that festival are on sale now. The rest of the lineup includes Big K.R.I.T., Common, Danny Brown, Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler the Creator, Jhene Aiko, Juicy J, Rakim, Wu-Tang Clan, and many more.

Cat Power @ T5, 1/29/2013 (via @theconstantwanderer)
Cat Power

...the lights went down and Cat Power's backing band wound up with a slight guitar line that seemed to bring Chan Marshall out of the shadows. She had let her Mohawk grow out--no photographs were allowed during the set, so please bear with textual descriptors--but her hair was still short and bleached-blond, with darkly imperious eyebrows that arched over the back of the room. If you've never heard it before (I hadn't), Marshall's voice in person is only slightly less burnished than on record, not necessarily always the magnificent, ineffable thing I had been expecting. It was also difficult to hear contours and nuances due to Sun's stickier beats ("Sun"), vocal distortion ("Silent Machine"), and the simple fact that her voice was often sunk low in the mix ("Cherokee" and "Human Being"). When you could hear it above everything else, however, on older piano-driven cuts like "I Don't Blame You" or "Bully," it rose in her throat raw and untrammeled, transfixing everyone enough to shush themselves. - [Village Voice]
Cat Power's current tour hit Terminal 5 last night and we've got the setlist to the sold-out show below. Also on the bill was rapper Angel Haze, who also appears on a new, Ryan Hemsworth remix of Chan's single "Manhattan" which you can stream below.

Openers for the evening were SISU, the band fronted by Sandra Vu who also plays drums in Dum Dum Girls (Jules Dum DUm is also in the bad). You can catch them Thursday night (1/31) at Glasslands with "duo" versions of Crocodiles and Punks on Mars, as well as a solo set from Cassie Ramone. Tickets are still available.

You can catch Ryan Hemsworth live on his upcoming tour with Daedelus and Salvia.

Brooklyn rapper Angel Haze, having survived a Twitter fight with Azealia Banks, will open for Major Lazer on U.S. tour in March. While there are no NYC dates announced, Angel will be playing out city fairly soon, opening for Cat Power at Terminal 5 on January 29. Tickets are still available.

Other than her spat with Azealia, Haze has been having a pretty good run the last few months. She was one of the longlist nominees in BBC's Sound of 2013 poll and worked with Erikah Badu on her Classick mixtape (streamable here).

All Angel Haze tour dates are below...

Jacques Renault

Pitchfork posted a story yesterday on The New Electronic Brooklyn Underground, where they highlighted the thriving dance parties, labels, and producers that have been coming up in Brooklyn for a few years now and have been experiencing even greater success lately. Some of what they highlighted, like record label UNO and especially their artist Mykki Blanco, have been working their way up so much, they may not even be able to be considered "underground" anymore.

Mykki Blanco is also part of NYC's rising underground rap scene, and along with Angel Haze, CJ Fly, Kirk Knight, and The Underachievers, Mykki is being featured in Spit Gold Under An Empire, a new documentary on the NY rap scene directed by Montreal's Emily Kai Bock, who directed Grimes' "Oblivion" video (via FACT). You can watch the trailer video below.

But back to the electronic stuff. UNO is also responsible for putting out releases by other great artists like Jacques Greene, CFCF, Fatima Al Qadiri, Arca, Gobby, and more. Jacques Greene, who resides in Montreal, is on tour of the US now and he'll be in NYC for a show on February 9 at 88 Palace with Dark Disco and Martyn. All Jacques Greene dates are listed below.

Another party highlighted in the Pitchfork article was Let's Play House, which is a party run by Jacques Renault (not to be confused with Jacques Greene) and Nik Mercer. They've got two upcoming events this month -- first they'll do a free one on January 24 at The Woods (48 S 4 St) with Stockholm producer HNNY (who also plays Le Baron on 1/22 while he's in NYC), and then a co-presented party with The Dog & Pony show at Le Poisson Rouge on January 26 with The Revenge (UK), Mark E, Jacques Renault, and Paul Raffaele (tickets). The flyers for those shows are below. Jacques Renault also has a show tonight (1/18) at The Counting Room (44 Berry St) with Miss Sabado and Son of Sound. Admission is $10 at the door or $5 with RSVP to resonate@misssabado.com.

Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin
Mister Saturday Night

The article also highlights the Mister Saturday Night party, which is run by Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin. They have a bunch of parties coming up, and one of the most interesting ones is FaltyDL (who has an album coming out next week) at House of Yes on January 26. More info on that show and a list of all upcoming Mister Saturday NIght events are below.

The article also talks about Aurora Halal's Mutual Dreaming party, which doesn't have any upcoming events at the moment, but you may remember it from the Hieroglyphic Being show at 285 Kent over the summer.

Lists of dates, video, streams, and flyers below...

Angel Haze
Angel Haze

As you may know, Angel Haze and Azealia Banks got in a Twitter fight yesterday (1/3) which resulted in Angel Haze releasing a diss track aimed at Azealia. Azealia Banks responded today with the Machinedrum-produced "No Problems" and tweeted, "Lol I def used that energy to write a fly new jam tho. It's not even really a diss anymore! Haha !!!"

...well Angel Haze thinks it's still a diss because she already responded with a second diss track called "Shut the Fuck Up" and the message, "you get an unmastered diss...you aint worth my studio time." Choice lyric: "How much twitter feed does it take to wanna make you get into the studio and come up with a different flow, not try to recreate '212,' the only shit you know." Damn.

Listen to both tracks below...
