Diamond Head in the early 80s
It is an undisputed fact that one of the key players in the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal movement of the late 70s was the UK's Diamond Head. And though the reactivated band may only have original member Brian Tatler (lead guitar/backing vox) amongst their ranks, you can still see the band bash through Diamond Head classics like "Am I Evil?" (most famously covered by Metallica) while on their current US tour. Catch Diamond Head on tour now and in NYC at BB King's on September 1st with Shitkill & Livesay, tickets are on sale. All dates are below.
In semi-related news, Metallica & Lou Reed have given a name to their forthcoming
abomination? LP: Lulu (out November 1 in North America, October 31 everywhere else):
"Lulu" was inspired by German expressionist writer Frank Wededkind's plays "Earth Spirit" and "Pandora's Box," which tell a story of a young abused dancer's life and relationships and are now collectively known as the "Lulu Plays." Since their publication in the early 1900's, the plays have been the inspiration for a silent film ("Pandora's Box," 1929), an opera, and countless other creative endeavors. Originally the lyrics and musical landscape were sketched out by Lou for a theatrical production in Berlin, but after coming together with the 'Tallica boys for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concerts in New York in 2009 all guilty parties knew they wanted to make more music together. Lou was inspired enough by that performance to recently ask the band to join him in taking his theatrical "Lulu" piece to the next level and so starting in early May of this year we were all camped out recording at HQ studios in Northern California, bringing us to today and ten complete songs.Metallica are scheduled to play Yankee Stadium on 9/14 with Slayer, Megadeth & Anthrax; tickets are still available.
In other news, Anthrax play a "secret show" at Best Buy Theater on September 12th as "cover band Satan's Lounge Act" according to a report from Blabbermouth. The show is the day before their latest LP (and first with original singer Joey Belladonna since the early 90s) Worship Music drops and you can get your free ticket by pre-ordering a copy of their new CD via Best Buy.
And lastly in an also semi-related but nowhere-near-as-classic note, Anvil just played Bowery Ballroom on 7/30, but will return to NYC and hit Highline Ballroom on Nov 7th with Shitkill. Tickets go on sale 8/23 at noon. Meanwhile you can catch Anvil on August 26th in Buffalo with Alice Cooper. Their other dates include a European tour with Saxon, and Maryland Deathfest 2012.
All tour dates and some video is below.
INXS, complete with the guy who won his way into the band on vocals, are touring this summer and playing Wellmont Theater on August 3 (on sale now) and Beacon Theatre on August 4 (Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 AM).
In happier news, Joey Belladonna will in fact be back fronting Anthrax when they take the Yankee Stadium stage in September.
What's the most unfortunate example of a band replacing their lead singer instead of just breaking up?
They hit the west coast last weekend, and now "The Big 4" will make the journey east for their second show together in The Bx. Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth & Anthrax will play Yankee Stadium on September 14th. According to Metallica's site, "tickets go on sale Friday, May 6 at 10:00 AM via www.ticketmaster.com. Met Club members should log in for more information about a special pre-sale starting on Wednesday, May 4. Yankees season ticket holders will have their own pre-sale, also on May 4, starting at noon."
Hopefully by the time the NYC show rolls aroundm Slayer will have founding member Jeff Hanneman back in the fold, though he did made a brief appearance in Indio last weekend...
Slayer hit the stage and even the sun appeared slightly scared as it sank behind the mountains. They were the hardest and most relentless band of the day. Dave Lombardo's double bass drums were thunderous, not so much supporting but propelling the music as Kerry King delivered frequent guitar-shredding solos...They played a new song "America" (sp?) that fit right alongside the classics. As he has been since February, Gary Holt of Exodus sat in for guitarist Jeff Hanneman who is suffering from necrotizing fasciitis in his arm. To the crowd's great delight, Hanneman appeared and played during the last two songs of the set, "South of Heaven" and "Angel of Death". -[Seattle Post-Intelligencer]Check out a video of "Angel of Death", one of "Am I Evil" and a trailer for "The Big 4" show, below...
Coachella sold out in less than a week, but the festival that is going to occupy the same fairgrounds exactly one week later, goes on general sale Friday at 10am (presales happening now), and that is "The Big 4" which will bring together Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax ("together for the first and only time in the US") for one big Indio, California classic metal show on Saturday, April 23rd .
One week after that, Goldenvoice (also responsible for Coachella and The Big 4) will host its annual Stagecoach Festival at Empire Polo Field (same place). "California's Country Music Festival" is being headlined by people you probably don't care about, but will also include sets by names like Wanda Jackson, Loretta Lynn, the Punch Brothers, the Secret Sisters and Phosphorescent who is also playing Coachella. Tickets are on sale.
I unfortunately could not find a ticket link for Brochella. Full lineup (real poster) for Stagecoach, and a Big 4 video trailer, below...

"It has been a really long time since Long Island experienced a real heavy metal show. In fact, it is flat-out embarrassing and insulting to the fans and bands that it has been this long. Thanks to the demonic forces of the dark lord, Long Island was the place to be on Friday night when Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax invaded the Nassau Coliseum.Slayer and Megadeth brought their classic LPs back to the NYC area, just two months after their appearance at the Izod Center in NJ. Friday's Nassau Coliseum date (10/8) was identical in scope to the Izod one (Slayer playing Seasons In The Abyss, Megadeth on Rust In Peace detail) with the difference being that the now-Joey-Belladonna'd-Anthrax supported the pair (as opposed to NJ's support, Testament). In addition to classic material, Anthrax played "Fight 'Em 'Til You Can't", a new song performed for the first time with Joey, during their eight-song set. Video of that is below.
The "Big 3 of Thrash" performed on the Island together for the first time ever under the heading of the "American Carnage Tour" presented by Jagermeister. The artists, Dave Mustaine in particular, did not let fans forget that as he made at least 5 references to the sponsor during Megadeth's set."
Going into the show, one would think that Anthrax would be the weakest link. Let's face it, Anthrax is awesome but not of the same caliber as Slayer. The band must have had this in mind because Anthrax annihilated the Coliseum. Original frontman Joey Belladona could not have sounded any better. He was dead on. [Gears of Rock]
The meeting of the thrash titans is ongoing through the next two weeks. Check out more pictures from the Nassau Coliseum stop, with videos and setlists, below...
Slayer, live in Poland
Though tickets are still available for their date at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, NJ, the second leg of the American Carnage tour (Slayer + Megadeth) has been announced. That leg includes Nassau Coliseum on Oct 8th, and though tickets go on regular sale on July 23rd, they are currently on Live Nation presale through Thursday at 8PM. The password is "venue". Testament wont open the Nassau Coliseum show like they will at the Izod Center in August, but Anthrax will!

"We want to apologize to our fans who came out to the Red Bull event last night in the hellish cold to see us play. Originally, we were to go on just before 9PM and play for 45-minutes. One of the snowboarding events ran very late which caused us to delay the start of our set. That, and a curfew we were not informed about until 9:30PM snowballed into an unfortunate situation that was beyond our control . As we were walking to the stage, we were instructed to cut our set to three songs, and no one was more surprised than us when they cut the PA before we could finish the third song. We are particularly mortified that this happened when our good friend, Chuck D, had just taken the stage for "Bring the Noise". We extend our apologies to him.
Nothing like this has ever happened to Anthrax before, and we regret that it happened last night. Thank you to those who came out to support and once again our sincere apologies"

Valient Thorr bundled up, a snowboarder & Chuck D w/ Anthrax
Over the last three weeks, a massive snowboard ramp has risen in East River Park, in the shadow of the Williamsburg Bridge. Nine stories tall and 150 yards long, it required more than 100 workers to build, and it has lured 16 of the world's top professional snowboarders to compete in Thursday's Red Bull Snowscrapers, billed as the largest urban snowboard event in North America. That NY Times article came out before yesterday's event (2/5). Musical guests included Valient Thorr (seen above bundled up after he/they played) (and who are performing again tonight/Friday in Brooklyn), Black Gold (who play/DJ again outside today/Friday at South Street Seaport), and "Anthrax" who were joined by Public Enemy's Chuck D (as seen above). Bring the Noise.
Riders, including the 2006 Olympic snowboarding gold medalist Shaun White, Travis Rice, and Terje Haakonsen, will zip down the ramp and soar 50 feet while performing aerial maneuvers before touching down on either side of a 36-foot-long ramp. A panel of judges will rate the best moves and style. The winner will get $50,000 of a $100,000 purse. [The NY Times]
