Slow Southern Steel blew into town on a typhoon-like Saturday night (8/13), bringing with it late night performances from Cough (with special guest/film director CT on vocals!), Apostle of Solitude, and Earthling. Though an unfortunate accident prevented the Jaegermeister from appearing as advertised, the show was an excellent night that both celebrated southern music and celebrated WITH it.

The main attraction was Slow Southern Steel, the oft-delayed documentary on the southern-fried metal phenomenon that has given birth to bands like Eyehategod, Buzzov*en, Rwake, Dark Castle, Kylesa, Zoroaster and more. Ninety minutes in length, the NYC showing was the first time that the film had been screened outside of director CT's (of Rwake) native Little Rock, Arkansas. While SSS does feature all of the usual suspects and pieces on the influence of bands like Eyehategod, the film focuses more on the people, culture, and the human side of southern rock. The influence of church, growing up with livestock, Katrina, and the hotly debated rebel flag were given as much attention as Buzzov*en. As a result, Slow Southern Steel is a broad but intriguing look into that music scene. With deliberate-pacing and an excellent sense of humor, this is a film for music fans of any genre or anyone interested in understanding the different cultures that exist within our own borders. Here's to hoping this documentary receives a proper release sometime soon.

Following the film, we were blessed by performances by Earthling (a Richmond thrash-meets-black metal crew), Apostle of Solitude (Indianapolis doom) and headliner Cough, who hadn't played NYC since The Charleston late last year. Earthling was a pleasantly-solid band and considering that they only have a demo to their name, they'll move quickly. Apostle of Solitude features Bob Fouts (ex-The Gates of Slumber) on low-end, and the band's traditional doom jams were much-better represented live than on their recent release. See them live if you can. Cough, as usual, delivered a killer performance of slow-crawling doom destruction and closed their set with a cover of "Tired of Being Alive" by Danzig with CT on vocals. It was an excellent end to an equally excellent night.

Apostle of Solitude

Everyone, I have some bad news: due to a serious illness in his family, Jason has had to go to Utah for a couple of weeks, and we have to drop off SHoD XI [Stoner Hands of Doom] and the Slow Southern Steel premiere in NYC. I hope that you all understand... it's not something that we wanted to do, frankly we'd hoped to start getting busy again... but family has to come first. - [Karl of The Gates of Slumber]

Quite the past few weeks for BrooklynVegan metal events, with Loss cancelling their appearance at Saint Vitus (and subsequently being replaced by Unearthly Trance) and now the cancellation of The Gates of Slumber. Luckily, we roll deep and The Gates of Slumber will be replaced by fellow Indiana doom breathren Apostle of Solitude!

Apostle of Solitude's last LP, Last Sunrise, saw release on Profound Lore Records last year, and the band recently released a pair of splits with Dawnrider, Rituals of the Oak, and The Flight of Sleipnir. For the unfamiliar, Check out some audio of the old-school doom band (featuring members of The Gates of Slumber) below.

As discussed, CT of Rwake will be in the house to present his film Slow Southern Steel, so expect this Arkansas madman to do some collaboratiing with either Cough, Apostle of Solitude or Earthling on stage. Doors are at 10PM, tickets are on sale (limited seats available), and there will be a bunch of free Jagermeister for all of you maniacs.

Cough, Apostle of Solitude and Earthling are all on board for Stoner Hands of Doom XI, an annual festival in Frederick MD. The show will feature numerous doom luminaries over its three days (August 12-14), including Earthride, Hour of 13 and Windhand among many others. Windhand is also scheduled to play Acheron on August 19th.

Now that they're finished beating down The Studio at Webster Hall with their 100db riffs, Hull will headline Ace of Clubs TONIGHT (7/20) as the band teams up with Iron Tongue (featuring CT and Reid of Rwake), The Dirty Streets and Flaming Tusk. Doors are at 7PM and $8 gets you in.

The Charleston will also host a deathgrind extravaganza tonight with the great Flourishing supporting Japan's Infernal Revulsion with Andromorphus Rexalia and Shiro-Ishii providing support. $8 gets you in that show as well.

Ace of Clubs will go two nights in a row with the brutality as well, as the venue will host another metal show Wednesday (7/21). As previously discussed, the great Apostle of Solitude will bring the doom to the venue alongside headliner Beauty Apes, Kings Destroy, Archon, and Alkahest. $8 gets you into the rage.

And last, but certainly not least, a reminder that the great Earthride and Valkyrie will play Ace of Clubs on August 7th as part of a larger tour for the duo. The Resurrection Sorrow will support.

The grotesquely prolific Thou is forever on the move, and in addition to their out-now Baton Rouge, You Have Much To Answer For EP and the upcoming studio LP Summit due in July on GIlead Media (CD) and Southern Lord (Vinyl), the band has a pair of splits on deck. First up is the band's split with The City Is The Tower entitled Dwell in the Darkness of Thought and Drink the Poison of Life. Thou contributes two songs of the five, both of which are available above. Preorder that record.

Last, but certainly not least, the band has split with fantastic UK sludge-doomers Moloch, due on Perpetual Motion Machine in 12" and cassette formats (preorder it). Download one Moloch track, "Dry Cough", and all of Thou's contribution to that split above. Moloch has a badass debut 10" on Feast of Tentacles and recently contributed a Rorschach cover to Clone Vol II (which also featured Thou, Shadow Of The Torturer, and many others)

Landmine Marathon have filled out the rest of their US tour dates which include two NYC shows, July 13th and Union Pool and July 15th at Cake Shop both with Salome. Meanwhile, Salome is currently working on their new LP, and debut for Profound Lore.

Profound Lore has signed Agalloch! The band is currently crafting their new LP in their lair in Portland through the end of July. More details are forthcoming. Aesop Dekker of another fantastic west coast black metal band, Ludicra, serves as their drummer. While we're on the subject of Ludicra's new LP The Tenant is out on 2LP courtesy Throne Records.
