As always, the metal and hardcore universe continues to exist unabated. Here's a roundup of some stuff coming up...
There's a bunch of heavy festivals here in the states. Besides the always-great festivals like Maryland Deathfest, there are a few recent metal fests announced that lean more towards mall metal but do have some good stuff. First of all there's New England Metal and Hardcore Festival, which goes down in Worcester, MA On April 15-16. This year's lineup includes headliners The Black Dahlia Murder and Killswitch Engage, plus Earth Crisis, Ringworm, Rivers of Nihil, Old Wounds, Fallujah and various others. Tickets are on sale now.
There's also Heavy Montreal for the border-crossing metalheads. That one happens on August 6-7 and involves Mastodon, Ghost, Sabaton, Carcass, Suffocation, Inquisition, Kataklysm, Biohazard, Mantar and again, Killswitch Engage. Tickets are on sale.
Also, in upstate NY, there's Rock'n Derby Festival on May 20-22 with Lamb of God, Megadeth, Clutch, Wolfmother, Wild Throne, Anthrax and Ghost. Not to mention Dokken and Scott Stapp! This fest will also involve a demolition derby and pro wrestling. What are you waiting for? Buy tickets now.
In terms of NYC shows coming up, tech-death monsters Revocation are going on a short run of dates and hitting Saint Vitus on March 17. Support for that has yet to be announced, but tickets for that are on sale now. Dates below.
Old-school evil black metal band Archgoat are touring with Valkyrja, and they'll be stopping in NYC for a show at Saint Vitus on March 20. Tickets for that are on sale now, and you can check out all tour dates below.
Heavy, catchy punks Angel Du$t are playing a few east coast dates with Higher Power and Soft Grip, including NYC at The Acheron on March 18 with support from Liberty. Tickets for that are on sale now, and you can check out those dates below.
There's some new music making the rounds, including a new single from locals Prong. That's called "Cut and Dry," it's from their upcoming album X - No Absolutes, which is out today (2/5) and you can stream it below. The whole album is on Spotify.
San Francisco doom duo Black Cobra have a new album on the way called Imperium Simulacra and they recently debuted the title track. It's a stellar piece of riff-mongering, the likes of which we've come to expect from this band, and you can stream it below. Imperium Simulacra is out February 25 via Season of Mist.
Canadian power-metal band Striker just premiered their incredibly fun new LP Stand in the Fire over at Invisible Oranges. You can stream that ripper below. As always, keep an eye on IO for a steady stream of good metal.
Now on to the reminders. Since we last spoke much has been announced. There's Amon Amarth/Entombed A.D., The Sword/Purson, Dylan Carlson, Weekend Nachos, Kvelertak/Torche/Wild Throne, and Grim Reaper.
And of course there's more. You've got five (five) Killswitch Engage shows, Magrudergrind/Mutilation Rites, Cauldron, Tau Cross, Unearth/Ringworm, Dragged Into Sunlight/Primitive Man/Cult Leader/Churchburn, UXO/Primitive Weapons, Behemoth/Myrkur, Ghost, Cannabis Corpse, Pig Destroyer/Dropdead/Full of Hell, and Whores/Fight Amp.
Also: Dysrhthmia/Artificial Brain, Poison Idea/Child Bite/Iron Reagan AND Poison Idea/Child Bite/Sheer Terror, Rivers of Nihil Krallice/Sabbath Assembly/Gnaw, Coffins/Noisem/Ilsa, Bell Witch/Wrekmeister Harmonies, Black Tusk, Taake, Young and In the Way, Vattnet Viskar, and Bongzilla/Black Cobra.
And, to give you a fourth paragraph of links (because 4th time is the charm), there's Abbath/High on Fire/Skeletonwitch/Tribulation, Abigail Williams/Fleshgod Apocalypse, Melvins/Napalm Death/Melt Banana, Cannibal Corpse/Obituary/Cryptopsy, Voivod/Vektor/Eight Bells, Megadeth/Suicidal Tendencies, Black Sabbath, Slayer/Testament/Carcass, AC/DC, and Iron Maiden.
That about does it. What did we miss? Stream new Black Cobra, Prong, and Striker, and check out the new Conan video below...
Trey Azagthoth of Morbid Angel
May 26th was a day of firsts for me at the tenth annual Maryland Deathfest. It was the first time I saw Confessor, Deviated Instinct and Haemorrhage. The first time I heard "new" material from death-doom godsWinter. The first time I saw Noothgrush with new live vocalist Dino Sommese (Ghoul, Dystopia, etc). And maybe most memorably, the first time I witnessed a man whip out his junk out on stage, piss in his cupped hand and wipe his face with it.
The latter first came care of Horna, who's lead singer Spellgoth performed the "urine baptism" at center stage (pictures below, NSFW?) and was one of several notable black metal-influenced performances (Archgoat, Tsjuder, Black Witchery) on that brutally hot Saturday. The moment wasn't noticed by many, but the foul stench of old blood and human fluids left a trail throughout the indoor stage.
My mid-afternoon arrival at Sonar meant that I sadly missed sets by Infernal Stronghold, Bloody Phoenix, and Looking for an Answer, and not-so-sadly missed October 31 (members Deceased) and Anvil (the former being eons better than the latter). The remainder of the sweltering hot day was largely a string of successes with stellar sets from crusty thrashers Hellbastard, UK's Dragged into Sunlight, deliciously obnoxious goregrind from Haemorrhage, death-doom pioneers Winter (who played unearthed songs at MDF), thrash from Morbid Saint and an impressive set from the reunited technical-doom crew Confessor.
Reunited crust-death metal crew Deviated Instinct wins for my favorite of the daytime performances (they played at close to the same time as The Devil's Blood), and though bassist David Vincent gave me a bit of a Nikki Sixx douche-chill during Morbid Angel's headlining set, the band's performance of the early classics absolutely murdered. Brujeria, the supercrew made up of members of Napalm Death, Carcass and more, were great headliners for the opposing outdoor stage but I opted for Noothgrush.
Rorschach at The Charleston (more by Ryan Muir)
While we wait for the Maryland Deathfest lineup to expand, one of those bands have slipped past the goalie! Rorschach will play Maryland Deathfest
and will presumably be announced with their final batch of artists in the coming weeks. Final bands announced! and they are: AGALLOCH, ARCHGOAT (Finland), BRUJERIA (Mexico), YOB, BLACK WITCHERY, DYING FETUS, UNANIMATED (Sweden), MORGION, RORSCHACH, NEEDFUL THINGS (Czech Republic), DIE PIGEON DIE (Australia), and EXTERMINATION ANGEL.
Show No Mercy returns with an interview and a new song from Leviathan. The interview is short and Whitehead doesn't exactly delve deep, but it and the song are both definitely worth a listen.
Vanishing Leper is Justin Detore (Mind Eraser/Rival Mob/Righteous Jams etc) and Jordan Darby (Dry-Rot), and the band is currently streaming a new EP and are preparing it for a limited release on Cold Vomit. Listen below.
Kvelertak is coming.
Absu added more dates since we first posted. Original post updated.
Rise And Fall have a new 7" on the way entitled "Deceiver", alongside a reissue of Hellmouth. Look for both on Deathwish.
Portal are currently tracking their new LP.
Mastodon's Remission has been repressed on 2xLP.
Have a fun weekend. More NYC shows listed below. What did I miss?
