Torche at Saint Vitus (more by Harriet Roberts)
Torche

On a freezing and snowy Saturday evening (3/2), Torche played Saint Vitus with the garage-y Dirty Fences (who play Cake Shop tonight) and supercrew Argonauts (mems Burnt By The Sun, Municipal Waste, Revocation, East of the Wall). The sold-out show did not feature an appearance from Iron Reagan, who cancelled due to scheduling conflict. More pictures are available at Invisible Oranges.

As mentioned, Steve Brooks's other project Floor will play a string of dates with Thrones including March 29 at Saint Vitus. Tickets are still available.

Turbonegro at House of Vans, Aug 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)
Turbonegro

No matter where you fall in the debates regarding their new vocalist, if there's one thing that's certain is that Turbonegro still put on a hell of a live show. So far the Norwegian band has mostly European shows in their calendar, a majority of which are in their home country. But the tongue-in-cheek band will hit the US in late May for a string of dates (including Punk Rock Bowling). While details are still emerging, look for Turbonegro at Irving Plaza on May 18 with guest Dirty Fences.  Tickets go on presale Thursday (2/28) at 10AM, and regular sale the following day (3/1) at 10 Am.

Dirty Fences WILL play another show though and in the near future. Look for the band to be first of four at Saint Vitus on Saturday (3/2) where they'll join the previously discussed Torche, Argonauts, and last night's guests at StV, Iron Reagan. The show is sold out.

All Turbonegro dates are listed, along with video, below.

Argonauts at Union Pool, March 2012 (more by Di Lynn Ring)
Argonauts

Let's be honest, supporting Torche is not the most enviable of positions when you've got a sold-out show. It takes a band with balls to play right before them, and luckily the first of two openers for the sold-out show at Saint Vitus on March 2 has been revealed. Argonauts (mems of Revocation, East of The Wall, Burnt By The Sun, Municipal Waste) will play direct support to Torche, with more bands still to be revealed. As stated above, tickets are sold out, but as sponsors of the show, BrooklynVegan will be giving away a few pairs for free. Details on how to enter are below.

BV and Invisible Oranges are also proud sponsors of upcoming shows at Saint Vitus with Deafheaven / Sannhet, Acid King, and most imminently, two nights with YOB that kick off on Sunday (2/10). Tickets for all of those shows are still available.

UPDATE 6PM: Tonight's St. Vitus show (Dept. of Health, ANASAZI, Blackboot, A Truth) has been cancelled due to Nemo.

In related metal news, as we just updated in our list of Nemo-related cancellations, we thought we'd let you know that tonight's scheduled Gojira / Devin Townsend / Altas Moth show at Irving Plaza has been postponed till February 19. That's one day after their show at Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Torche track stream and contest details are below.

Mastodon

While Coke Bust/Masakari/Sick Fix/Grudges was tearing down Acheron on 11/19, a much larger show was brewing at Terminal 5 featuring Mastodon, Dillinger Escape Plan and Red Fang as part of the trio's tour together. Mastodon's set covered their entire recorded output, including newer tracks like "Curl of The Burl" all the way to earlier favorites like "March of The Fire Ants" and, according to the set-list, "Iron Tush" (aka "Iron Tusk").

The sold-out show also featured an appearance from original DEP vocalist Dimitri Minkanakis (now a member of Argonauts) who joined the band on stage for performances of "Sunshine The Werewolf" and the classic "43% Burnt". Video of that is below.

While Argonauts have no upcoming dates, Brett of Argonauts will play Public Assembly on 12/14 with his other project East of The Wall. They'll be joined by Tournament (who play an Acheron benefit tonight with Hull/Naam), Family, and Fashion Week. The band is finishing up their US tour post-the release of their latest LP The Apologist.

Pictures, video and the Mastodon setlist from Terminal 5 is below...

Thou @ ABC No Rio
Thou

DIY mainstay ABC No Rio erupted on Saturday afternoon (10/8) when Thou played a cover of Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" (video below), though by the time they launched into said cover the packed and sold out room was already knee deep in great riffs. Kicking off with an awesome set from Argonauts, the show also featured an appearance from Thou tourmates The Body and locals Alkahest. The show is one of a select few remaining afternoon matinees at the space, with the building being torn down and rebuilt in 2012.

Argonauts, on their way to a Philadelphia show that night, opened the show. The band, comprised of John & Dave of Burnt By The Sun, Brett of East of The Wall, and Dimitri of ex-Dillinger Escpae Plan fame, had many elements in common with Burnt By The Sun; groovy, noise-dotted metal-core riffs are central to the band's sound. Argonauts have no recorded material thus far, but when those records do hit, I'll be on the hunt for them.

Alkahest's doom followed Argonauts who were followed up with booming two-piece doom juggernaut The Body. In the close quarters of ABC No Rio, my friend remarked to me that this was the first time that he could hear the vocals so clearly and I agreed; Chip's no-microphone screams are usually buried amongst the wash of vibrating 10-inch speakers. Another fun set from the band, who promised me that they'd be back soon with their collaboration with Braveyoung.

Its been quite a treat to see favorites Thou in NYC lately, and the swaying crowd definitely agreed. Said Beasties cover closed out Thou's set at ABC No Rio, which saw the crowd erupting into moshpits and swinging back and forth. Thou will be on the road a lot more in the coming months, so if you missed them, look for them on the road soon, and live vicariously through the video below.

More pictures and video from the show below...

Black Star on Colbert
Black Star on Colbert

Big night for music on late night TV last night (and lately in general). You may have heard that Portishead played their first TV appearance in 13 years on Jimmy Fallon last night. Black Star, as promised, also played a new song "Fix Up" on The Colbert Report (but not at Irving Plaza, or the rest of their tour for that matter). Mastodon performed "Curl of The Burl" last night on David Letterman. Video of the Mastodon and Black Star (aka Talib Kweli and Yasiin Bey) performances, as well as the hip hop group's interview with Stephen Colbert is below.

Speaking of new music by Talib Kweli, his other project Idle Warship has a new album coming. Check out one of the new tracks at Rolling Stone. See them live Saturday in Brooklyn, or at one of the other dates listed below.

Reminder: Mastodon's tour hits Terminal 5 with Dillinger Escape Plan and Red Fang on 11/19. Tickets are still available.

Meanwhile, as previously mentioned, former Dillinger Escape Plan vocalist Dimitri Minkanakis's band Argonauts (with Dave Witte & John Adubato of Burnt By The Sun, Brett Bamberger of East of The Wall) will play their debut NYC show at ABC No Rio on Saturday (10/8). They'll be joined by Alkahest, Thou, and The Body.

As also mentioned, Jeff the Brotherhood, now bros with Jack White, play Late Night with Jimmy Fallon tonight (10/6).

Crosses

Crosses is a new crew that features Shaun Lopez of FAR and Chino Moreno of Deftones, and the trio (Chuck Doom rounds it out) have released a new EP for download. Get it for the price of your email address. Though the pedigree of this might indicate something on the heavy side, Crosses definitely resembles Chino's Team Sleep or with moments of (gulp) witch house present. No word on what is next for the trio, but one thing is for sure, Ritualz, AKA †‡†, is not pleased. He tweeted "only thing i can think of right now is that if you have a blog post about that fat fuck stealing my shit to let people know please" and "woke up to attacks by deftones fans. basically they're mad because i came up with the crosses first and they hate everything not deftones?" No word on a response from Chino

Meanwhile, Dave Witte has gathered up an impressive crew of musicians for his latest project Argonauts. Witte will join The Dillinger Escape Plan vocalist Dimitri Minkanakis, East of the Wall bassist Brett Bamburger, and fellow Burnt By The Sun member John Adubato. Though the band has yet to post a new song (they will in the near future according to a recent Facebook post), they are scheduled to play the Gwar-B-Q in Richmond, VA on September 17th. There they'll join Gwar (duh), Darkest Hour, Kepone, Mensrea, DBX, Groundscore, Battlemaster, White Cross, The Occultist and Bloody Crackdown as part of the day-long affair.
