Puff Daddy

There's always a good amount of hip hop shows happening in and around NYC, but we don't get a chance to post about all of it. Here's a roundup of some cool stuff coming up that we haven't talked about yet, new music, and more:

Hot 97 is throwing a holiday show at Newark's Prudential Center on December 5 that's pretty stacked with both the old and the new: Busta Rhymes, Mary J. Blige, Puff Daddy, Lil Wayne, French Montana, Sean Paul, Jeremih and Fetty Wap. Tickets are available.

Speaking of, Puff Daddy is planning a sequel to his hits-filled 1997 debut No Way Out (called No Way Out 2), but in the meantime he just released the MMM mixtape ("Money Making Mitch") which features Jadakiss, Styles P, Pusha T, Lil Kim, Lil Wayne, Big Sean, Travi$ Scott, Ty Dolla $ign and more; and co-production from Young Chop, Mike Will Made It, Hit-Boy, Harry Fraud and more. You can stream the whole thing below.

For another stacked Newark show: the recurring 'Masters of Ceremony' concert, that brings a number of influential old school heads together, happens again on November 27 at NJPAC with KRS-One, The LOX, Ja Rule, Rakim, Mad Lion, Lords of the Underground and Black Moon. Tickets are available.

You can catch the legendary Rakim much sooner than that though. He plays TONIGHT (11/11) at SOB's in Manhattan in with Ceez, JSwiss and Lyricks. Tickets for tonight's show are available.

For more old school rap in NYC tonight, GZA, Afrika Bambaataa, Doug E. Fresh, Rhymefest, Ma Dukes and more are being honored at the Hip-Hop Education Center's first annual Extra Credit Awards at NYU's Kimmel Center from 6 to 9 PM.

Coincidentally (?) the same night as the 'Masters of Ceremony' show, Ja Rule's collaborator Ashanti plays a NYC show at BB King's (11/27). Tickets are available.

Another guy who was shaping the sound of mainstream hip hop around the same time as Puff Daddy, Timbaland, has a new memoir called The Emperor of Sound coming out November 17. The next day, he'll come to NYC for an interview/book launch at Highline Ballroom (11/18) (tickets).

Timbaland's also been putting out some new songs lately. He recently dropped "Them Jeans" featuring Migos and "UFO" featuring Future and Tink. Listen to both below. He's also teasing a new track with Pusha T.

Rap Tees

Speaking of rap books, DJ Ross One just released Rap Tees: A Collection of Hip-Hop T-Shirts 1980-1999. The description reads:

Beginning with the earliest rap concert shirts from the Sugar Hill Gang and New York Fresh Fest, circa 1980-84, and spanning the next two decades, Rap Tees includes rare shirts from a wide selection of the who's-who of the business including: Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, Beastie Boys, Eric B and Rakim, Wu Tang Clan, Jay Z, Nas, EMPD, and many, many more. Rap Tees bookends the golden age of rap with unique street-corner memorial shirts commemorating the deaths of The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur.
There's a sample of three of the shirts above, via MIke Nouveau's Instagram.

That Timbaland/Tink collab isn't the only new Future song. He just put one out called "Last Breath," produced by Metro Boomin and Ludwig Goransson, that will appear on the soundtrack to the upcoming Rocky spinoff Creed. Listen below.

The busiest band in rap, The Roots, can always be found as Fallon's house band and you can always catch Questlove's mostly-weekly DJ night at Brooklyn Bowl, and they'll play a Long Island show the Saturday after Christmas at The Paramount (12/26). Tickets are available.

Roots member Black Thought is on the brand new Freddie GIbbs song, "Extradite." That's one of two songs that Gibbs put out today, the other being "Packages," and both will appear on his Shadow of a Doubt mixtape due 11/20 via ESGN. Listen below.

A few other upcoming NYC shows: Key! plays SOB's on November 17 (tickets).

Loaf Muzik, who BV had open our recent Vince Staples show, play The Studio at Webster Hall on November 14 with Young M.A (tickets).

We're not crazy about G-Eazy, but we do want to let you know that A$AP Ferg is opening his Terminal 5 show on January 24. Tickets are on AmEx presale now, general on-sale starts Friday (11/13) at noon.

Oxymorrons play the Marlin Room at Webster Hall on 11/18 with Turquoise Jeep, Pants Velour and Kosha Dillz; and Knitting Factory on 12/9 (tickets).

We already mentioned the Curren$y show happening December 3 at Irving Plaza, and since we last spoke Bodega Bamz was added. Tickets are still available.

And a few more new songs: Ty Dolla $ign released "LA" (featuring Kendrick Lamar, Brandy & James Fauntleroy) off his new album Free TC, due out next week. Lil Durk & DeJ Loaf released "My Beyonce"; Atmosphere, Aesop Rock and Blueprint teamed up for "This Lonely Rose"; and Erykah Badu (who plays Brooklyn in December) released "Phone Down" off her upcoming But You Caint Use My Phone mixtape. Listen to all of those below.

Other previously-discussed shows coming up in and around NYC: Lupe Fiasco, Azealia Banks (NYC is her only not-cancelled tour date), Jay Rock, Joey Bada$$, the A Tribe Called Quest reissue party, Action Bronson, Angel Haze, Vince Staples, Kevin Gates, and more.

Odd Future

Tyler, the Creator is throwing his annual Camp Flog Gnaw festival at The Park @ LA Coliseum on November 14 this year. Despite saying over the summer that Odd Future wouldn't be performing as a group anymore, OFWGKTA is billed for this. The lineup also includes Snoop Dogg and Tha Dogg Pound (Daz Dillinger and Kurupt), A$AP Rocky, Danny Brown, Mac Miller, Atmosphere, YG, Trash Talk, Jhene Aiko, The Inernet, Domo Genesis, Hodgy Beats, Flosstradamus, TOKiMONSTA and more. Tickets go on sale today (9/15) at noon PST.

Tyler the Creator, A$AP Rocky and Danny Brown will also soon be on tour together with Vince Staples, and The Internet are touring too.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5

Countless band reunions, Wet Hot American Summer, and the '90s/early '00s revival continues when Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 comes out this fall. It's the first THPS game since 2002. As fun as the games were, the soundtracks were equally important and for people of a certain age they probably turned you on to a lot of stuff. Maybe playing those games was the first time you heard Agent Orange's "Bloodstains" or Gang Starr's "Mass Appeal" or Adolescents' "Amoeba."

The soundtrack for the new one has been revealed, and it's got a lot of cool stuff. There are great newer songs that weren't around during THPS' initial run, like Cloud Nothings' "I"m Not Part of Me," Bully's "Milkman," Cold Cave's "A Little Death to Laugh," Death From Above 1979's "Virgins," The Orwells' "Who Needs You" and Temples' "Shelter Song." Plus some more legendary stuff too, like Death's "Keep On Knocking." Check out the full tracklist and a playlist of the whole thing (via Wired) below.

The blanks have been filled in for the Riot Fest Toronto 2015 lineup. Most excitingly, Weezer is playing their two best albums (Blue Album and Pinkerton), and in addition to that, there's The Prodigy, Cancer Bats, Bleachers, Courage My Love and Ritual.

The new additions join Wu-Tang Clan, Rancid (performing ...And Out Come the Wolves), Motorhead (who announced a tour today), Echo & the Bunnymen, Thrice, Babes In Toyland, GWAR, Against Me!, Thurston Moore, and more. This year's Riot Fest Toronto happens September 19-20 in Downsview Park.

Tickets are back on sale. Updated poster below.

2015 Governors Ball

Surrounded by everything from peppy indie pop to trippy electronica, singer-songwriters can often get the short end of the stick at festivals. Decked out in all black and standing before a marquee that consisted solely of her name in giant Helvetica letters, Sharon van Etten wasn't trying to convert any Governors Ball attendees to her dark brand of folk-rock. No matter: Her gorgeous voice and highly capable backing band caught people's attention as she barreled through gems like "Tarifa" and "Taking Chances." Despite the brooding tone of her material, van Etten kept things light and talked about a personal milestone achieved that day for one of her guitarists [Doug Keith]. "His baby started walking today!" the singer-songwriter shouted, fists raised. "And my parents are at a festival! They're rock and roll!" [EW]
She also said sorry to her mom before singing the line, "then I shit in your bathroom", and it's true Sharon's set was great!

Day 2 of Governors Ball was almost perfect. Rain clouds Saturday morning gave way to the most beautiful weather with just a bit of mud to deal with when walking from stage to stage, or looking for something to eat at one of the many food vendors.

The lineup also featured some of the most anticipated sets of the festival, including Ryan Adams, Bjork (pics and review at the link), SBTRKT (whose set featured guest appearances from Ezra Koenig, Caroline Polachek and Sampha, but not Yukimi), Little Dragon, Future Islands, Conor Oberst, Sharon Van Etten, Atmosphere, Deadmau5 (who debuted a new light dome thing but was also plagued by technical difficulties at the start of his very popular set), White Lung, Kiesza (who I had to miss to see all of Sharon's set) and more. Folks who showed up early hopefully caught Kate Tempest's typically fiery, moving performance.

Ezra Koenig's performance of 'New Dorp New York' with SBTRKT was definitely a highlight of SBTRKT's set, and it was the 2nd artist in two days that Ezra performed with.

Pictures from day 2/Saturday (6/6) are in this post.

Pics from Governors Ball day 1 are HERE and Day 3 are HERE.

Foxing at Webster Studio in August (more by Amanda Hatfield)

The totally stacked Modern Baseball / Knuckle Puck / Foxing / Crying / Somos tour lands in NYC for its first of two shows tonight (12/12). Tonight's show is at Gramercy Theater and then they play Music Hall of Williamsburg on Monday (12/15). You can still get tickets to Monday's show but tonight is sold out. Updated dates are listed below.

If you haven't seen Foxing live, they're the kind of band you really have to see for yourself to get the full experience. But to at least get an idea of what to expect, you can check out the band's new live video for "Rory" that they filmed at The Fest this year. Watch it below.

Four Foxing members also gave us lists of their favorite albums of 2014. One of the lists includes Cymbals Eat Guitars who also included Foxing on their own list and also play NYC tonight. Check those out lists and the Fest video below...

2014 Outside Lands Festival Day 2
2014 Outside Lands Festival Day 2
2014 Outside Lands Festival Day 2

The best performance of the day, however, came courtesy of Haim. This increasingly popular pop-rock trio, which sold out two nights at the Fillmore in San Francisco in April, was absolutely dynamite onstage, roaring through tunes from the 2013 debut "Days Are Gone." The three sisters -- Alana, Danielle and Este Haim -- exhibited far more musical muscle in the live arena than they have in the studio to date. Danielle Haim, in particular, was a marvel to behold, delivering some of the most passionate, mesmerizing guitar work of the festival. [San Jose Mercury News]
Day 2 of Outside Lands in Golden Gate park featured plenty of heavyweights. There were sets from Tom Petty, Death Cab for Cutie, Haim, Local Natives, Deer Tick, Dum Dum Girls and many more. We've got pics from many of the awesome Saturday sets in this post. You can check out pics of Day 1 here.

Atmosphere at Outside Lands 2014 Soundwave tent
2014 Outside Lands Festival

Minneapolis rap duo Atmosphere are going on a long international tour in the fall in support of May's Southsiders. An August/September North American run was already announced, and now they've added a November leg surrounding their appearance at Fun Fun Fun Fest. The tour hits NYC at Terminal 5 on November 16. Support on that date and most others comes from Prof, Dem Atlas and DJ Fundo. Tickets for the Terminal 5 show will go on sale Friday (8/15) at noon with an AmEx presale starting today (8/13) at noon. All dates are listed below.

This past weekend Atmosphere played the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco where we were set up in the Toyota Soundwave tent, taking portraits and conducting fan Q&As among other things. Pictures from Atmosphere's visit to our tent are in this post.

Atmosphere also just put out a video for the title track of their new LP. Watch that, with the list of tour dates and more pics, below...

Foals at Terminal 5 in 2011 (more by Kurt Christensen)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...

Slint, Spires That in the Sunset Rise @ MHOW
It's the last night of Slint's 3-night run in NYC on their current reunion tour, which is their first US tour since 2007. The shows have been seeing the band play all of Spiderland, in addition to some cuts of Tweez and a couple outtakes as well, and the reviews all seem to be pretty positive. Tonight is sold out.

Foals, Cage the Elephant, J. Roddy Walston and The Business @ Terminal 5
Though they're best-known for their slow build anthems, Foals' twitchy anarchic beginnings rear their head live. Singer Yannis Philippakis is a fearless daredevil on stage, prone to flying leaps into the audience. Be prepared to catch him.

TOY, Heaven @ Mercury Lounge
TOY's record are good, but it's on stage where they excel, cranking the volume, and locking into a motorik groove.

Ben Kweller, Slothrust @ Bowery Ballroom
Ben Kweller has been a solo artist a lot longer that he was frontman of Radish though the two total over 20 years in the biz. He most recent album was 2012's Go Fly a Kite.

The Loom, Whiskey Bitches, Dead Stars, Ghost Punch @ Cameo Gallery
Neo-folk act The Loom headline this ecclectic bill that also features punky Whiskey Bitches and '90s loving Dead Stars. Presented by NYC-Taper, if you miss the show you can still listen to live recordings via his blog.

Endless Boogie, Degreaser, Call Of The Wild, Cyanide Tooth @ Death by Audio
Endless Boogie and Degreaser are both bands with helpfully descriptive names. Endless Boogie find a groove and ride it all day; Degreaser use thick distortion like an industrial solvent.

Jeremy Jay, Heavenly Beat @ Glasslands
Jeremy Jay has always had a penchant for '80s synths but on new album Abandoned Apartments, he dips into icier textures than we've heard from him before. It would be wrong to say he's gone goth, but you may have heard some of these keyboard sounds on Cure records.

Torres, Young Unknowns, Eastern Midwestern, Photo Ops @ Glasslands
Torres' confessional folk gets grungy on record, but live it's even more so, and main member Mackenzie Scott has an ace band to help her bring the songs to life.

Atmosphere @ Highline Ballroom
Alternative rap vets Atmosphere are still kicking and will release their seventh album (and first since 2011), Southsiders, this week via longtime label home Rhymesayers. Tonight's show is sold out.

Joan As Police Woman, Cuddle Magic @ Rough Trade
Joan's new album, The Classic, it finds her in classic (and classy) R&B mode and contains some of her most ebullient songs yet,

Laurie Anderson (violin), Okkyung Lee (cello) @ The Stone
NYC noise cellist Okkyung Lee begins her residency at The Stone tonight which continues through May 11. She's got some pretty impressive guests lined up for the whole thing, including art pop veteran Laurie Anderson at tonight's 10 PM set.

Jolie Holland, Kyp Malone @ Union Pool
With a new album, Wine Dark Sea, out later this month, Joelie Holland is playing Union Pool every Tuesday in May. Also on the bill: Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio.

RL Grime, Dubbel Dutch @ Webster Hall
Trap producer RL Grime knows how to get a room dancing, which probably explains why he's quickly playing increasingly large venues, tonight's Webster Hall show being his biggest in NYC yet.

For all of tonight's shows, and tomorrow's, check out our NYC concert calendar.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.

Riot Fest - 2013 - Day 1
Riot Fest - 2013 - Day 1

Not long after [Andrew W.K.'s set], on the Roots Stage, part-time UCLA professor and full-time punk rocker Greg Graffin joined his band Bad Religion. The great thing about the California punk veterans is that the majority of their songs (in true punk rock fashion) rarely pass the two-minute mark. We were treated to a nice variety of songs from their 30+ year career, including classics like "I Want to Conquer the World," "We're Only Gonna Die," and "Infected." They also performed a few tunes from this year's True North, such as "Fuck You," "Dharma and the Bomb," and the LP's title track. The members threw around some self-depreciating humor, poking fun at their age. "We've been around since the 80s!" said Graffin, now fully greyed. Their songs are timeless, and some are even more relevant now than ever. Just go re-listen to "21st Century Digital Boy." [BV Chicago]
Chicago's Riot Fest (the second of three Riot Fests this year) is currently underway. It's on its third and final day (9/15) as we speak (set times). The festival began this past Friday (9/13), and on the first day we caught sets by Danzig, Joan Jett, Bad Religion, Gwar, Atmosphere, Andrew WK, Smoking Popes, Saul Williams, Dessa, and more. Pictures from that day are in this post, and there's more pictures, plus a review, over at BV Chicago.

Update: Day 2 pictures are now posted here and here. Day 3 pictures are here and here.

Back in May, drill & bass master Squarepusher announced a North American tour which included a TBA NYC show set to happen on October 30. Well it turns out the NYC show will actually be on November 1 and it happens at Terminal 5 with a great list of openers; Bonobo (DJ), Holy Fuck, and Mount Kimbie. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (6/29) at noon with an AmEx presale starting today (6/27) at noon. All Squarepusher dates are listed below.

Squarepusher released his new album, Ufabulum, in May and it's a pretty solid one. It opens with "4001," which is just about the only song that sounds like classic Squarepusher, and is then followed by, "Unreal Square," which brings in a bit of brostep bass wobble. The rest of the album sees Squarepusher diving into nutty jazz fusion and unstoppable breakbeats. You can stream three of its tracks below.

Speaking of Mount Kimbie, they've signed to Warp, the label which Squarepusher also calls home, and currently at work on their second album which will be released on the label. The Terminal 5 show appears to be their only announced North American date at the moment.

Holy Fuck and Bonobo will be in NY even sooner for Camp Bisco, which goes down from July 12-14 at Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, NY. Passion Pit / Kud Cudi at Governors Ball - 6/23/12
Governors Ball
Governors Ball

Governors Ball went down in Randall's Island over the weekend (6/23-6/24) with 26 bands across two stages and no overlapping sets. Day 1 was "headlined" by Passion Pit (though Kid Cudi played after them) and also included Chromeo, Major Lazer, Atmosphere, Santigold, Duck Sauce (Armand Van Helden and A-Trak), James Murphy & Pat Mahoney (Special Disco Version DJ set), and more. Probably the most anticipated set of the day was Passion Pit's, who were playing their first NYC area show in about a year and a half, and first since announcing their new album and releasing two singles from it (both of which they played). NY Times didn't seem to approve much of their set though, writing:

Saturday played out as a party punctuated by angst; there were many, many calls for putting hands in the air. Party and angst mix in Passion Pit, who work in two main modes: the shimmering anthem and the pulsating dance-pop song, both with more cryptic lyrics than might be expected. Passion Pit stacked the anthems at the beginning of the set-among them a new song, "Take a Walk," about an immigrant who finds himself financially ruined-before revving up the dance tunes. But the stage didn't add much beyond subwoofers to Passion Pit's songs; Michael Angelakos's vocals, mostly falsetto, needs studio help.
They wrote similar criticism of Kid Cudi, mentioning that he also needs the safety net of the studio, but were very positive about Day 1's selection of dance music, including Special Disco Version, Duck Sauce, and Major Lazer. What did you think? Or did you just go on the (much better day) Sunday?

Pictures from Sunday are on the way. More from Saturday below...

"If you a real hip-hop head RT!! #RocktheBells2012" - Nas

Rock the Bells

Turing hip-hop festival Rock the Bells announces:

Boost Mobile in association with Guerilla Union have announced the return of the ROCK THE BELLS 2012 FESTIVAL SERIES powered by BlackBerry. The world-class platform will feature an array of seminal and flourishing artists over an expanded two-day period in four major North American markets, including headliners Kid Cudi, J Cole, Wiz Khalifa, Atmosphere and more, with special guests Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.

The only touring hip-hop festival will kick off in San Bernardino, CA on August 19 and 20 at the NOS Events Center. The festival will then make its way to Mountain View, CA on August 25 and 26 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre and will wrap on the east coast in Newark, NJ on September 1 and 2 at PNC Arts Center.

ROCK THE BELLS and non-profit organization Hip Hop and Hope for Haiti have joined forces to shine light on the disaster-stricken country and to provide continued relief efforts; that of which have progressively decelerated.

I'm pretty sure PNC Bank Arts Center isn't in Newark, and actually even farther from NYC (where the festival used to happen), but whatever.

In addition to what is listed above, Hit Squad is also playing. Full lineups TBA soon (possibly at the launch party happening in California tonight)
