Atakke played their final show at Knitting Factory (more pics)
Atakke

Atakke has decided to call it a day. It's been a great ride over the last 4 years. We've met a ton of great people, had the opportunity to play with more than a couple of our heroes and friends, and gotten to make some of the best music I've ever had the pleasure of playing. I've always said that my only goal in a band was to play music that I like, with people that I like, to people that I like. If nothing else can be said about this band, it is that we did just that... Thanks to everybody that played with us in one capacity or another, and most especially, we dedicate this band to the memory of our fallen friend and brother, Nick Poot. The LP will be released posthumously on vinyl if we can afford it, and on CD with all of the recorded material on it, including some live footage of the last shows we got to play with Nick. There is a new project in the works, with a demo and shows happening early 2011. We're thankful for what we've had, and excited about what the future holds.

For Victory.
Atakke

The above-pictured 10/30 show at Knitting Factory, where Atakke shared a bill with AGE, Hellshock, Perdition, and Cervix, wasn't advertised as Atakke's final show, but it was the last show they played before this announcement that, sadly, they've broken up. Their scheduled appearance with Toxic Holocaust at Acheron on 1/12 is cancelled.

In Atakke's statement, the band also took pause to honor Nick Poot, former bassist for the band (also Absurd System) who recently lost his battle with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. The punk community banded behind Poot, throwing benefit shows in his honor. RIP Nick "Poot" Mardanes.

Atakke have thus far released a pair of 7"s, the latter of which was produced by Philip Cope (Kylesa). No word on when their final and posthumous disc of new and unreleased material will be released.

The good news is, in addition to the new project they reference above, other Atakke-related projects are ongoing, including Mutant Supremacy (who played on 12/4 with Evoken and Gorephobia at Brooklyn Fireproof). MS will play Union Pool on 1/23 with Cannabis Corpse, the second time in three months that the pair have played together (the last was at Bowery Electric at the end of October). Mutant Supremacy released their new LP Infinite Suffering earlier this year.

Attake's full statement and some video is below.

Toxic Holocaust at Gramercy (more by Justina Villanueva)
Toxiv Holocaust

"DANZIG frontman and namesake has commented on the cancelation of the band's November 9, 2010 concert at the Cabooze in Minneapolis, Minnesota as part of the "Blackest Of The Black" tour. The show was reportedly called off an hour before the 6 p.m. showtime, with the rest of the bands on the bill -- POSSESSED, MARDUK, TOXIC HOLOCAUST and WITHERED -- going ahead and performing their scheduled sets.

Although there had been no official statement from the DANZIG camp regarding the cancelation, someone from the Cabooze told Secrets Of The City that the show was called off due to the fact that Glenn Danzig thought the stage at the venue was "too small."

When asked about the reasons for the Minneapolis cancelation during yesterday's (Wednesday, November 10) interview on Fargo, North Dakota's KQWB-FM (Q98 Rocks) station, Danzig replied, "Basically, we couldn't do our show there, but we had the other bands play . . . We tried to make it work, but at the end of the day it was a production call."" [Blabbermouth]

Toxic Holocaust, now finished with their tour with Danzig, will be in the Northeast next week, playing Philly and Boston next Friday and Saturday respectively. Unfortunately, the thrashy faves will bypass NYC, but the band will return to play Acheron on 1/12 with Atakke . More details, including opening bands on the BrooklynVegan/1000Knives-presented Brooklyn event are forthcoming, but for now save the date.

Hellshock

8PM marked the start of two killer back to back shows at Knitting Factory on 10/30, the first of which featured crusty Japanese hardcore band AGE with Hellshock, Atakke, Perdition, and Cervix. The show was one of two that night for AGE/Hellshock, as the pair ended up playing a surprise show later at Acheron with Kakka Hatta 77 and Acid Reflux.

Of the touring parties, Hellshock crammed the most kids into the room, but it was AGE that impressed me the most with their wildman hardcore antics and foul riffs. Hellshock's death metal vocals over thrash-y d-beat were also well executed, as was the always dependable Atakke. Perdition was probably the single most violent set of the night. They inciting frenzied moshing to go along with their vocalists' out-of control stage antics (whipping around the stage, swinging the mic stand and smashing things with its base).

It was an awesome (Mischief) night of crust-y punk extremity that continued as the clock struck midnight and it turned Halloween. That's when Krieg & Woe took over the venue to darken things a bit... More about the late Krieg/Woe show is on the way, but for now dig on the moshpits, the costumes, and the massacre that was AGE & Hellshock, below...

Mel has a few choice words with the audience
Fuck The Facts

Summertime is the perfect time of year to crawl into a dingy, poorly-ventilated basement, shove up against a couple dozen long-haired dudes, and take in the aural splendor of a down'n'dirty grindcore show. Spend too much money on beer (or sneak in some forties), forget your earplugs, scream along, then leave slightly sore and soaked in a sure-to-be-unhealthy amount of other peoples' sweat. At least, that's what the fine folks of 1000 Knives and Brooklyn Vegan thought when they summoned up this unholy lineup and unleashed it upon the Lower East Side on Saturday (Aug 7th).

Hometown hellraisers Atakke stormed the stage with a characteristically furious thrash/death assault, battling through some slight technical difficulties and bringing the mosh, hard.

I've somehow never seen Defeatist before, but am kicking myself for not making a point of doing so earlier. They absolutely slayed, dealing out raw, chaotic grindcore interlaced with shards of noise and broken glass, seething with hate, and buried by grime and crust. Do not miss their next show (w/ Black Army Jacket at the Cake Shop on Sept. 4th).

Magrudergrind were on their grind as usual, busting out a short'n'nasty collection of up-tempo, bottom-heavy punk rock beatdowns. Their music is a thrashing crusty filthy mess, and god do kids love it - the entire venue erupted into chaos upon every manic exhortation and wicked bass drop. Killer.

Fuck The Facts are a strange, unruly collective, and a force to be reckoned with in a live setting. As the crowd collectively lost its shit, the Canadian quartet sweated through a head-spinning set of twisted, off-kilter grind. Frontwoman Mel Mongeon stalked the stage like a caged lion, guttural roars and all. She also showed herself to be much cleverer than the average metalhead, as her summery ensemble of tank top and paisley skirt was undoubtedly a sight more comfortable than the filthy black t-shirts and jeans the rest of us were stewing in. The sound at the Cake Shop did the band plenty of justice, and Fuck The Facts played just long enough to drive their point home. Fucking rad.

Magrudergrind supporting Verbal Abuse (more by Keith Marlowe)
Magrudergrind

With all of the BrooklynVegan-related shows on the horizon, it can be hard to keep up. That said, we have some recent additions to some of our upcoming heavy music bills to report.

Atakke has been added to the upcoming Fuck The Facts / Magrudergrind / Defeatist destruction campaign THIS SATURDAY (8/7) at Cake Shop. Atakke recently roughed up the audience at Acheron supporting The Body. Fuck The Facts will have a new cassette entitled Live In Whitby available at the show, with the remainder showing up online after the tour. Get a copy and download one and pay-what-you-want.

Fresh off of wowing the crowd at Black Cobra, East of The Wall will support KEN Mode and Castevet at Acheron on August 17th.

Tombs have been added to the upcoming Black Army Jacket reunion at Cake Shop on Sept 4th. The show is just two weeks after the band plays Death By Audio on 8/22 with Planks.

And a reminder, Unsane/Keelhaul/Pigs/Disappearer take on Santos TONIGHT (8/5) (tickets) and Pollution, Megasus, The Love Below, and Judas destroy Acheron on August 13th at 8PM. Interested in seeing Unsane, Fuck The Facts, KEN Mode, or Pollution? I have two pairs of tickets available for EACH. Info on how to win, Pollution flyer, and some video is down below...

The Body

The Body

Now that it's opened its doors and begun to regularly unleash a formidably awesome show schedule unto the unwashed masses, the Acheron may very well be one of Brooklyn's coolest new venues. Last Thursday, the Bushwick practice space-turned-DIY stronghold hosted a wicked lineup that brought locals Curandera, Bad Dream, and Atakke together with Providence's heaviest export, The Body.

Curandera started things off to a crawl with their black'n'white (fast'n'slow) grinding sludge violence, as Justin Ennis (also of NYC black metal horde Mutilation Rites) pounded his drums like they owed him money [ED: the band also features Monty of the much lamented ASRA]. Bad Dream came floating straight out of 1975 with their hypnotic, psych-tinged doom (think Pentagram with two clean-cut dudes on bass/guitar, a killer female drummer, and lots of delay). It may be 2010, but this power trio sure hasn't noticed! Thrash/death ragers Atakke brought the energy levels up about a billion percent, whipping up a perfect storm of headbanging, moshing, beer-soaked fury overseen and egged on by formidable frontwoman Chloe Puke (who recently got back from a touring adventure with me & some sweet bands - part 1 and part 2).

I'd personally never had the pleasure of seeing The Body before, so was stoked to join them as they kicked off an extensive US tour tonight. The burly two-man wrecking crew hauled out a collection of mammoth doom riffs from their new album (the viciously excellent All the Waters of the Earth Turn to Blood, out now on At A Loss), sweating buckets all the while. The Acheron rules, but god DAMN does it get hot in there! The Body's drummer Lee looked about ready to sweat his beard off, but plowed through their set with manic determination anyway. After laying down almost forty minutes of unsettlingly heavy, desolate, feedback-worshipping doom, the two men looked about ready to escape the heat - but were persuaded by the rabid heshers down the front to sit back down and bang out an encore (which totally ruled!).

Check out the rest of their tour dates below, look for them in NYC again on September 16th (more details on the way!), and go buy their goddamn record...

Slang
Slang

Japanese hardcore hits the US shores when Slang crash lands at Chaos In Tejas 2010. Luckily for the rest of us, these headcases will hit the road for a string of dates including NYC twice as part of the ongoing Hardcore Gig Volume series! First up, Slang will team up with faves Mind Eraser, Nomos and The Rival Mob for a show at Death By Audio on June 9th. Three days later, Slang will join Perdition to support World Burns To Death (!) when the band plays Cake Shop on June 12th, their first NYC show in close to three years. Full tour dates and Slang tour flyer below.

Before that, Connecticut's The Pist will headline Europa with The Wankys, Chaos Destroy, Brain Killer, and Guilt Trip. Tickets are on sale.

Ceremony have a new album Rohnert Park due via Bridge Nine Records, and the band will be hitting the road hard over the summer as a result, doing their first pass at NYC with Blacklisted, Skin Like Iron, and The Men at Cake Shop on June 19th. The show will be an early show, and ending in time so that you can catch the previously scheduled Eddy Current Supression Ring/Pissed Jeans show at its new venue, Death By Audio (was Market Hotel). Ceremony will also be back in NYC with Punch for a pair of shows on August 7th and 8th at ABC No Rio and Death By Audio respectively.

Finland's Kyklooppien Sukupuutto are playing a pair of NYC dates as part of a larger tour for the Finnish band. Block off May 14th (Friday - TONIGHT) or May 15th (Saturday) to catch them at The Charleston (with Dry Spell, The Ominous Order of Flithy Mongrels, & Pollution) or ABC No Rio (with Acid Reflux, Staring Problem, & Crazy Spirit) respectively to catch this band before they scoot down to Chaos in Tejas 2010. Full dates are below...

In related Chaos in Tejas news, the Leatherface cancellation at Knitting Factory was just the beginning! The UK band has also cancelled their US tour including their appearance at Chaos in Tejas.

In other awesome festival news, the onslaught of post-MDF tours continue, as Mass Grave will play June 4th at new venue The Acheron (57 Waterbury St.) in Brooklyn alongside Atakke, HOG, Disma. The show originally included Bay Area d-beaters Stormcrow (and was at Rock Star Bar), who have since cancelled their appearance. Stormcrow will, however, team up with another MDF band, Coffins, for a split on 20 Buck Spin. The label doesn't have a release date, but is "hoping" to have it out by the time MDF rolls around.

Another pair of MDF'ers Jesus Crost and Rompeprop will hit the road for a tour as well, tagging Fontana's on May 26th with Ingrowing (who are also playing The Charleston on May 21st), before the festival. The show is the only other US date for the pair so far. Jesus Crost is currently streaming three new songs from their LP 010 at their myspace. Pick up that record via Bones Brigade. JC will also record a few songs later this year for a split with Phobia.

Texas terrors PLF have also scheduled an NYC show with Czech grinders Gride as part of a larger tour for the pair surrounding their MDF appearance. Power Cup, Unmen, and InTheShit will support the pair on the May 25th show at Bushwick Bike Shop.
