Hunx as Gayracula

All things considered, we hope you had a Happy Halloween. You already saw what John Vanderslice and Freelance Whales dressed up as, and Dum Dum Girls' nun costumes (Crocodiles in there too). We also already posted Deap Vally, Those Darlins & the Mountain Goats in Halloween attire, and you saw Vampire Weekend all decked out for Kimmel. Here's a whole bunch more. That's Hunx and a punx above. See the rest (sort of NSFW), below...

We mentioned before that the new Hood Internet album, FEAT (out 10/2), was a sample-free, guest-filled affair featuring the likes of Class Actress, The Rosebuds, Hooray for Earth, Au Revoir Simone's Annie Hart, Cadence Weapon, Zambri... and AC Newman who lends his pipes to the breakbeat-driven "One for the Record Books" which we have the premiere of right here in this post. You can stream it below and watch the video for "Won't Fuck Us Over" that features Annie Hart and BBU.
The Hood Internet are currently on tour and will play NYC tonight (9/14) at Music Hall of Williamsburg. (Rescheduled and relocated from August.) Tickets for tonight's s how are still available. If you'd like to go for free, we're also giving a pair of tickets away. Details are at the bottom of this post. Playing with them tonight and at all shows on this tour will be Oscillator Bug who will serve as The Hood Internet's backing band for their new sample-free tunes.
Song stream, video, a list of tour dates, and contest details are below.
Beach Day at Knitting Factory, June 2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

Beach Day are staying busy on the road this year, having already visited NYC a couple times, and are preparing for another East Coast tour, that will bring them here for two shows next month: September 14 at Pianos and September 16 at Cameo. Tickets to the Cameo show are on sale now.
The Cameo show is with Blonds, who, as mentioned, will play the Rock Shop even sooner on August 28. That show, presented by Brooklyn Brewery, is the "Brooklyn, Sweden Sendoff" with Telepathe, So-So Glos and Teen Commandments all of whom will play the Brooklyn, Sweden Festival in Stockholm and Malmö over Labor Day Weekend (8/31 - 9/1). Blonde Redhead, The Hold Steady, Cults, Crystal Stilts, Phosphorescent, Au Revoir Simone, Dum Dum Girls, DIIV, Twin Sister, Widowspeak, Maluca, Prince Rama, Caveman, and DJs Finger on the Pulse will also be there, so if you're wondering why Williamsburg seems empty that weekend, that's why.
Tickets to the send-off party at The Rock Shop are on sale now: it's $15 bucks but includes free Brooklyn Brewery beer from 7:30 - 9:30 PM.
A flyer for the Brooklyn, Sweden Sendoff party, plus Beach Day and Blonds tour dates, are below.

Erika Spring (of Au Revoir Simone) will release her debut EP on the Cascine label next week (7/10) and is playing a record release show in NYC on July 12 at the Ivana Helsinki Space (251 Elizabeth St). It's a free show, 8 - 10PM.
Produced by Violens' Jorge Elbrecht (who also plays drums in her live band), the songs on Erika's EP are much more lush, rhythmic and slinky than the minimalist vibe of her band Au Revoir Simone though definitely similar melodically with Erica's distinctive, delicate vocals. You can download "Hidden" at the top of the post as well as the funky '80s vocodered Jensen Sportag remix of the song.
The only other Erika Spring dates we're currently aware of are a few west coast shows with Alt-J (who also have upcoming NYC shows). All of her dates are listed below, along with the EP cover art and streams of both versions of "Hidden."

Remix gurus The Hood Internet will release their new album, FEAT, on September 18. This will be the band's first album of completely original material, free of samples. To fill sample void, the Chicago duo brought in a bevvy of guest stars for the album, including AC Newman, Class Actress, the Rosebuds, Hooray for Earth, Au Revoir Simone's Annie Hart, Cadence Weapon, Zambri, and more. Tracklist with all the guest performers is below.
Before the album comes out, The Hood Internet are going on a tour which includes a stop in NYC at Brooklyn Bowl on August 11. No on sale date has been announced yet. All tour dates are listed below along with a video teaser for FEAT and a stream of the duo's latest mixtape.

The Hold Steady at Fun Fun Fun Fest 2010 (more)

Last month, we announced that Truck America is returning to the Catskills in September (the 9th through the 11th) and will be headlined by The Hold Steady and Okkervil River. The only other confirmed bands at the time were Ra Ra Riot and Wye Oak. The lineup has since been updated to include Fruit Bats, Vetiver, The Felice Brothers, CItay, Gary Higgins, Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, Takka Takka, Hospitality, The Low Anthem and others. Check out the full list below. Early bird tickets are still on sale.
For The Low Anthem, it's one of many dates they just announced including one at Terminal 5 with Iron & Wine.
Speaking of The Hold Steady, frontman Craig Finn posted to his Tumblr that he's making a solo album:
"I'm in Austin TX for a few weeks. Making a record. Staying in a friend's guest house. Got here yesterday. So far so good. I'll be tracking the progress here."He has also been tracking his progress on the Tumblr.
Check out the full Truck America lineup update below...

Psychedelic Furs at Wellmont in 2009 (more by Tim Griffin)

The Psychedelic Furs recently reissued their sophomore album Talk Talk Talk (home of "Pretty In Pink") in Europe, where they toured the album in its entirety. On Saturday (6/25), they kicked off a tour for the album in America. That tour doesn't hit NYC, but they will come through in October for a traditional show at Irving Plaza on October 3 with Tom Tom Club. Tickets are on sale now.
Both Psychedelic Furs and Tom Tom Club also have festival appearances scheduled in August and both are playing the Hamptons. As mentioned, Tom Tom Club play Music to Know Fest in East Hampton. Psychedelic Furs were added to Escape to New York at the Shinnecock Reservation in Southampton, NY on August 5 - 7. Tickets are still available. Other recently confirmed acts include Of Montreal, Savoir Adore, Reptar, Mates of State, Tiger Love, and Jolly Boys.

"Escape to New York, an art, music and interactive performance party from the creator of the Secret Garden Party UK is pleased to confirm their Friday and Saturday line-ups:Well, hopefully this festival doesn't need to sell as many tickets as Music to Know Fest which happens in East Hampton one weekend later (and just announced Vampire Weekend, Bright Eyes, Cold War Kids, Chromeo, Matt & Kim, etc). That said, with Escape to New York they're really trying to push the experience separate from the bands. In fact, a "Manifesto of the Party" on their website includes these lines:Patti Smith, Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, The Vaccines, Best Coast, Au Revoir Simone, Chairlift, Lissy Trullie, Graffiti 6, The Submarines, White Rabbits, Static Jacks and The Postelles.
The Sunday Main Stage line up and the weekend's DJ line up will be announced over the next few weeks........
Coming to the US shores for the first time, Escape to New York is the first pop-up destination community and independent experiential music and lifestyle festival to take place on Shinnecock Nation land adjacent to Southampton, New York, from August 5th through 7th, 2011.
Expect the unexpected. Imagine the unimaginable. This special event is unlike anything the east coast has experienced before including the world's biggest brunch at a live music festival, installation and performance art, experimental theater, high-end camping, aka "Glamping" and amazing culinary delights unlike any other festival event. Escape to New York will also feature a safe children play area so families can enjoy the festivities, shade areas to cool off in, traditional Shinnecock arts and crafts and food, and three days/nights of some of the best emerging artists and known heritage acts to be heard anywhere.
"Our goal is turn upside down the conventional music festival experience and recreate it in a way that makes each and every attendee walk away feeling they just had an incredibly unexpected and amazing VIP experience from the moment they entered our gates all the way through to when they pack up to return to their regular lives", shares Escape to New York Executive Producer, Fred Fellowes.
The location of Escape to New York on the sovereign Shinnecock Reservation land is also unique. The Shinnecocks have lived along the shores of Eastern Long Island for thousands of years, and in October 2010 became the 565th federally recognized tribe.
Thus upon entering the reservation you are both in and escaping New York.
"The Shinnecock Nation welcomes the Escape to New York festival that will take here in August and we are working closely with the festival team to assure a success," says Beverly Jensen, Shinnecock Tribe Member and Communications Director. "
What makes a good party? It ends with "Imagine a wonderland." Is this potential wonderland (and "the world's biggest brunch") worth $100 a day? Tickets are on sale.

DOWNLOAD: Princeton - To The Alps (MP3)

Princeton are visiting NYC from LA this week playing three times: an early show Thursday (2/24) at Mercury Lounge, then Friday (2/25) at Cameo and Saturday (2/26) at Union Hall.
Princeton have a new single out on Hit City USA called "To the Alps" that you can download above or watch a brand new video of below. More keyboard-oriented than anything on their 2009 album, Cocoon of Love, "To the Alps" is lush, groovy and austere in a Blue Nile kind of way. Whether this is a change in musical direction or just a one-off experiment, it suits them and let's hope they explore it further.
The Cameo and Union Hall shows are both with Bell and Erika Spring of Au Revoir Simone. Takka Takka also play the Cameo Show. At Mercury Lounge, The Front Bottoms open.
The flyer for the NYC dates, some Kisses dates (Jesse Kivel of Princeton's other project), and the new Princeton video, below...

Erika from Au Revoir Simone joined Neon Indian for a song @ Governors Island

Special guests are usually show highlights, and this time was no exception though Erika Forster's appearance on stage with Neon Indian on Governors Island was a bit marred by the fact that you could barely hear her at first. They played a live version of the Neon Indian remix of "Another Likely Story". The second half of the song was really good though, as was most of Neon Indian's headlining set. Some in the crowd held glo-sticks and wore headdresses as they danced along to the chill waves being transmitted over the multi-colored, lit-up palmtree-decorated beach that gives everyone a beautiful view of the Manhattan and Jersey City skylines (including the performers who made note of the view at least once).
The Converse-presented "Gone to Governors" show also included entertaining and free sets by Prefuse 73, Dom, Nite Jewel, and late addition, Arizona band Miniature Tigers who were kept secret until after their Friday night Mercury Lounge show with the Spinto Band. At Governors Island, they went on at 8 and played 6 songs. I missed them by a minute (I got there before Nite Jewel went on).
Neon Indian, who produced the track "Gold Skull" on Miniature Tigers' new album, will pair of up with Miniature Tigers again, for a fall tour, and for a semi-secret, private NYC show at The Studio at Webster Hall tonight (8/16). The intimate show will be taped and streamed live by MTV.com.
7:30 doorsI don't know if MT's opening set will also be streamed, but you can check it out if you attend the show which... you can go to for free if you win one of the three pairs of tickets I have to giveaway. Details on how to win those tickets below.
8pm Miniature Tigers
9pm Neon Indian
Neon Indian will be releasing "a newly mastered deluxe edition CD and double Vinyl" of their debut album Psychic Chasms "on September 28, 2010 and digitally on August 31 via FADER Label / Static Tongues"...
...The album's new version, which is augmented by Mind Ctrl: Psychic Chasms Possessed, contains nine bonus tracks consisting of exclusive remixes and cover versions by Toro Y Moi, DNTEL, Bibio, Javelin, YACHT and more. The full tracklist is below, with all Miniature Tigers tour dates, and more pictures from Governors Island...Psychic Chasms was first released on indie-label Lefse Records last October and has since been embraced by numerous critics...

Miniature Tigers, who played Mercury Lounge last night, has been added to the free show on Governors Island tonight. They go on first which I think is at 8. A member of Au Revoir Simone will be coming out as a guest with Neon Indian. Make sure you undestand how to use the ferry, and keep in mind that you can come late. What usually happens, is it reaches capacity early, but then people leave and they keep running boats back and forth all night. Neon Indian goes on around 11.
If you can't be there, stream the show live on Converseradio.com

Just like nearly every other Brooklyn band, Au Revoir Simone is playing this weekend's Northside Festival. Their show is Thursday (6/24) at Warsaw, where they play with The Hundred in the Hands and CALLmeKAT. The ladies are then heading off on a short summer tour of North America in July. All dates are at the bottom of this post.
Meanwhile, on July 6 Au Revoir Simone release Night Light, a compilation of tracks from last year's Still Night, Still Light that have been remixed by the likes of Neon Indian, Aeroplane, Angel Deradoorian, Jens Lekman, Your Twenties, Tanlines and more. You can download the Jens Lekman remix of "Shadows" at the top of this post which is one of the more idiosyncratic on the compilation, turning the 4/4 time song into a string-laden waltz.
Au Revoir Simone tour dates are after the jump...
Voluptous Horror of Karen Black (w/ more clothes on than usual)

"Like last year, everything will be taking place in Williamsburg and Greenpoint because walking long distances is a drag when there are bands to see and beer to drink, we mean seriously. Us here at The L Magazine will be booking a share of shows on our own, but, for a large chunk of the festival, we've once again handed over curatorial control to some of the most tasteful, talented and dedicated folks in New York's independent music scene -- record labels, bloggers, promoters and more -- allowing them to showcase the bands they think you need to hear. The Williamsburg Gallery Association is again on board to highlight special exhibitions and other events at over 25 art galleries in the neighborhood. And to celebrate Northside's second year, we've invited a few of the city's biggest aficionados of independent film to curate four nights of New York-made movies at Brooklyn's new, as-yet-unopened film house-music club-restaurant-bar, indieScreen."That message from L Magazine refers to the second annual Northside Festival, taking place in Brooklyn from June 24th through the 27th.
Music, art and movies will be happening at "30+ venues" and "dozens of galleries" over the course of four days in Greenpoint and Williamsburg. Like SXSW & CMJ, you can buy tickets to individual events, or you can get a badge which gets you in to everything that isn't already at badge-capacity. $50 badges are now on sale to those 21 and over. If you buy a badge, "Arrive to venues early - badgeholders are admitted on a first-come, first-served, one-out, one-in basis."
If you buy a badge you can take your chances at getting into one of the four Northside shows happening at Music Hall of Williamsburg (BrooklynVegan showcase included), Fiery Furnaces at Brooklyn Bowl, and WAVVES & Cloud Nothings at Knitting Factory. TONS more shows TBA, but the initial list of bands that will be playing has been announced (I'm especially excited to see The Wave Pictures, Fucked Up, Liars, Parenthetical Girls and Les Savy Fav on there in addition to what we've previously talked about) (and yes Titus Andronicus is on there). Check it out below...

The Sword @ IFC House in Austin

IFC House at SXSW this year was a venue dedicated to all things IFC. Bands performed in front of video cameras for webcasts and possible IFC channel tv coverage. They had everyone there from Neon Indian to Broken Social Scene to The Sword who played a show in conjunction with a Dinner With The Band party at the venue. Chef & DWTB show host Sam Mason, and show creators Greg and Darin Bresnitz, were among those in attendance at the packed metal and food event. Pictures from that show are above and below.
The IFC Channel's rock 'n roll cooking show, Dinner With the Band, kicks off its official first season, with ten new artists, on Tuesday, April 27th (it then airs on the cable channel every Tuesday at 10:30pm). That's still two weeks away, but another party in the show's honor will happen at Santos Party House in NYC tonight (4/12). The free event will feature DJ sets by Au Revoir Simone and Vega, and live performances by Gators! (they wrote the show's theme song - MP3 above), Bad Brilliance, and CX Kidtronik. Andrew WK, along with Sam and Thu Tran, host the night which simultaneously celebrates Thu's IFC show "Food Party" (whose new season starts in two weeks too). "There will be FREE Thu Tran inspired munchies, beer and Sam Mason signature cocktails from 7-8PM". The flyer, along with more pictures from the Austin show, below...

North 4th is the new bar/venue that took over the space at 160 North 4th between Bedford and Driggs. Somewhat low key at the moment (no website), the place has started having shows including this one that happens there tonight (4/9):

IFC is creating a cuisine-oriented programming block to air Tuesday nights.Ten artists will be appearing on the new season, among them Murder City Devils who will be here taping the show during the trip that also brings them to Nokia Theatre (NYC) and Theatre of Living Arts (Philly). Tickets for those (three) shows are still on sale. The full list of 2010 'Dinner With the Band' artists (which you have a chance to be in the audience for), and a video of Les Savy Fav performing on the preview season, is below...After a successful six-episode run of "Dinner With the Band" that began in November, Rainbow cabler is ramping up its episode order to 10 and teaming it with "Food Party" as an hourlong block.
"Band" teams chef Sam Mason and an indie band, which performs on the show, at a Brooklyn loft. Conversation ensues about life on the road and the food the musicians eat while touring.... Programming block will air from at 10 p.m. beginning April 27. [Variety]

Annie (left) w/ Uninhabitable Mansions @ Union Hall (irockiroll)

Au Revoir Simone had a very busy year, releasing their lovely third album, Still Night, Still Light, back in May. You can download the album's first single, "Shadows," at the top of this post. They toured almost constantly, and played one of the BrooklynVegan day parties at SXSW. They're DJing a party at the Madewell Store in Soho on Wednesday (12/16) from 7 - 9 with complimentary martinis (RSVP here) and will play Highline Ballroom on January 7 (with Alexa Wilding) (tickets are on sale).
ARS's Annie Hart also plays in Uninhabitable Mansions who, along with Sharon Van Etten, are opening for The Antlers at Bowery Ballroom on Tuesday (12/15). It's sold out. UM also play Cameo on December 20th, and Bruar Falls in January.
So, we asked a load of NYC-area bands to tell us how their 2009 went, via a handy questionnaire. As we get them back we're gonna post them. The first is from Annie Hart. Her answers below...

Field Music didn't make it, but there was a special reunion set by Pulsars, followed by the super duper Wye Oak who played before special guest Rumours last night at The Bell House in Brooklyn (12/3).
As advertised (at the last minute anyway), Rumours was a Fleetwood Mac cover band. Cover song experts Loser's Lounge made up the band and a rotating cast of singers came to the stage to play individual tunes. Those vocalists included Dave Hill dueting with Erika from Au Revoir Simone, Will Sheff dueting with Beth Wawerna, Matthew Caws, Britta, Sharon Van Etten, Wye Oak, and many more. The show was in honor of Bell House booker Skippy. Well, it was his birthday party, and he even came out to help perform "I Don't Wanna Know" with Mia Riddle. The full setlist (which did not include AC Newman or Eugene Mirman - both must be out of town) with a couple of videos below...
