Ty Segall has added a Bowery Ballroom show on September 29 after a long string of previously announced dates. The show, like many on the tour, will be opened by Mikal Cronin (of The Moonhearts), with whom Ty recorded the album Reverse Shark Attack in 2009. Tickets go on sale Friday (5/27) at noon.
Goodbye Bread is Ty's first album for Drag City and comes out June 21. He's revealed the album art and a slow, bluesy track from the album "You Make The Sun Fry" (both above). All tour dates below...

Yo La Tengo @ Pitchfork Fest 2009 (more by Joseph Xu)

What, it's Tuesday already? CMJ is here and I'm not really ready. Can we postpone for a week? No? All right. Here we go. Let's not go too crazy tonight (10/19), there's still four more days of this to come.
DAYTIME
Pretty much all the free daytime action happens on Ludlow St. today. Biggest among them is The Music Slut's party at Pianos, which features the dark synths of Brahms, the cheery synths of Hooray for Earth, plus Oberhofer (who play our day party on Friday), Young the Giant, Pearl and the Beard, and more. Party starts at noon, with the first band (Vancouver's Yukon Blonde) on at 1PM.
Moving down the street, Paper Garden Records has a showcase at The Living Room, with Denmark's Alcoholic Faith Mission, two bands from Toronto (Freedom or Death, Kidstreet), Emmanuel and the Fear, Motel Motel, Young Mammals and Saadi. First band is on at 1PM.
And then at Cake Shop, it's the Flower Booking/CapeShok party with Million Young, Sunglasses and Azalia Banks. This one starts a little later -- first band is on at 4PM.
And somewhere between day and night is the free New Zealand showcase at Le Poisson Rouge which starts at 5:45PM. I especially recommend you check out Lawrence Arabia, whose material ranges from delicate folk to ELO style orch-pop. Also playing: electropop artist Zowie, Kids of 88, Street Chant, Ruby Frost and Electric Wire Hustle. Did I mention it's free? You do need to RSVP if you don't have a badge.
NIGHTTIME
Big ticket shows for tonight: Yo La Tengo play for free at the official CMJ kickoff show at Brooklyn Bowl with Screaming Females (who play our showcase Thursday night) and DOM (who play our Friday day party); Former Afgan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli is at Bowery Ballroom with Craig Wedren; and Jenny and Johnny, Wild Nothing, Times New Viking, Happy Birthday and La Sera (Kickball Katy of Vivian Girls) at Irving Plaza;
If you wanna dance, you might want to head to Highline Ballroom for a night bands that sound like they could be on a Kitsune Maison compilation: the electro-soul sounds of Dan Black, Italo-disco lovers The Golden Filter, helium voiced Neon Hitch, Denver's The Chain Gang of 1974, and more.
UPDATE: "Chain Gang has dropped off tonight's show due to food poisoning. All other shows are set to occur as scheduled." (10/20 @ Maxwell's, 10/22 @ Cameo, 10/23 @ Santos)
For hip hop, it's Duck Down Music vs. Blacksmith at LPR.
And tonight at Cake Shop is your only chance this week to catch The Billy Nayer Show (11PM), the live band behind such cool sci-fi western musicals as The American Astronaut and last year's Stingray Sam. (Frontman Cory McAbee also directs and stars in them.) They're a one-of-a-kind, and playing as part of the Panache Booking showcase that also features Audacity, Dinowalrus, Onra, Janka Nabay, O'Death and Gary Wilson.
There's tons more shows, obviously. But that's what looks interesting to me. What are you going to see? Flyers and day party set times are below.

Audacity @ the FYF Fest Fan Appreciation Day in May

What are you doing over Labor Day weekend? Beach? ATP New York? Black Army Jacket? Chances are that if you live in LA and like your indie peppered in with a bit of stoner doom and hardcore, that you'll be at FYF Fest on September 4th at Los Angeles State Historic Park. The event will feature performances from The Rapture (who recently played a surprise show at Union Pool), Panda Bear (who is playing Governor's Island), Sleep (who play ATP the day before and NYC a few days later), the return of Unbroken (wow), !!! (who also play a Pool Party), 7 Seconds, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists (who isn't retiring, is playing Siren), Screaming Females (them too), Aerial Pink's Haunted Graffiti (on tour now), Titus Andronicus... the list goes on and on.
Full lineup is below and early bird tickets ($5 cheaper) are still available, with regular sale and VIP tickets up as well.
On May 8th, FYF Fest held a Fan Appreciation Show at the Glasshouse in Pomona, and in two other locations that were right next door (including the Glass House Record Store). BV LA correspondent Rachel Carr was there. Her pictures from that show along with the full FYF Fest lineup, videos and more, below...

Steve Brooks of Torche is all smiles

OK, guilty as charged. Though there were a zillion other incredible bands all rockin across Austin at that exact same moment, but I chose to see Torche a SECOND time at Beerland on 3/18 (the first was at the BV Day party). The party was called Kill Your Idols and its lineup proved to be much more eclectic, featuring various strains of punk (old school, indie, bratty, garage, post) amongst the lineup with bands like Off! (featuring Keith Morris of Circle Jerks, Mario of Earthless & others), Gun Outfit (80s Sonic Youth-y style post-punk currently on Post Present Medium, owned by Allen Spunt of No Age), Audacity (super bratty punk featuring Damian Edwards of Crystal Antlers), and Charlie & The Moonhearts (garage-y melodic punk).
Off! (by Brian Reilly)

Hey All!I missed Off! at this show (Brian was there though), but caught them later at MWTX (pics for the latter still to come). Their short blasts of riffy 80s punk rock bliss were awesome. Hopefully this band is real, and not just a one off project. I arrived at the show in time to see Gun Outfit who featured some excellent song-writing but lacked in the live show department; I'd be curious to hear their full-length. Audacity were unhinged with energy -almost irritatingly so. Charlie & The Moonhearts struck a balance between the two with both fun stage energy and catchy songs. Torche, well they whipped the crowd into a frenzy.Keith Morris has a new band.......OFF! which is made up of Steve McDonald from REDD KROSS on bass, Dimitri Coats from the BURNING BRIDES on guitar, Mario Rubalcaba formerly of HOT SNAKES,CLIKITAT IKATOWI,ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT and currently in EARTHLESS on drums, & Keith on vocals.
Add OFF! to your friends & check out their upcoming shows @ SXSW in Austin,Texas!
Thanks!

Crystal Antlers @ CMJ 09 (more by Paul Birman)

Crystal Antlers are in the middle of their two-night NYC run opening for The Big Pink at Bowery Ballroom (Thursday night) and Music Hall of Williamsburg (Friday). They'll cap it off Friday night by walking across the street to play a second Brooklyn show at Cameo with Soren Well and others.
UPDATE: Crystal Antlers say the Cameo show isn't happening.
The Big Pink tour runs until December 6th in Philly. From there Crystal Antlers team up with Audacity for a bunch more touring before the end of the year. All dates and the Cameo flyer below...

Crystal Antlers @ Pianos, CMJ 2008 (more by Leia Jospe)

We're happy to welcome Crystal Antlers to the lineup of the free BrooklynVegan day show at Fontana's on 10/23! This will be the second year in a row the LBC band played a BrooklynVegan day party during CMJ, and this completes our Friday day show lineup, which looks like this:
* NebulaSet times TBA, flyer below,and for those keeping score at home, that's FIVE bands playing a FREE show with FREE Miller beer (and Vitamin Water) (while it lasts)! No-brainer?
* Crystal Antlers
* Naam
* Goes Cube
* Ume
Stick around after the show because the BV-BBG/Relapse Records showcase happens at the same venue 30 minutes later.
Crystal Antlers are currently touring (their asses) off in support of Tentacles, their LP from Touch n Go that dropped earlier this year. The band has dates scheduled through the end of the year and are playing quite a few CMJ shows in the coming days including a late night Vice Party with Cold Cave. And these shows are in addition to their upcoming dates with The Big Pink which include shows at Bowery Ballroom (12/3, tix) and Music Hall of Williamsburg (12/4, tix).
Full Crystal Antlers dates, as well as a video for "Andrew" below...
