Turn To Crime
Turn To Crime

As mentioned, Deep Time (formerly YellowFever), who teamed up with The Babies (featuring Vivian Girl Cassie Ramone) for a Union Pool show last night (8/15), will play 285 Kent tonight (8/16) with Cassie Ramone again, though this time Cassie will be playing with Julie from K-Holes. Turn To Crime, Weird Rivers and I'm Turning Into are also on the bill, as is a DJ set from Serpent (aka Devin from DIIV).

Turn To Crime is the solo project of Derek Stanton from Brooklyn psych rockers Awesome Color. He has a new album, Demonstration I, which you can stream or download for $8 at his bandcamp. It dives into psych rock, shoegaze, lo-fi and other subgenres that love reverb and distortion.

Turn To Crime and K-Holes also share a bill at Union Pool on Saturday (8/18) as part of the Summer Thunder Series with Viva L'American and Death Ray Music. It's a free outdoor day show with "free booze" and (not free) El Diablo tacos.

K-Holes also open for Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees when their tour hits NYC for a show at The Well on September 22. Tickets for that show are still available.

All K-Holes dates are listed below.

Jemina Pearl @ Union Pool...
Jemina Pearl

The audience was left to wonder exactly what happened when Jemina Pearl walked off stage less than 30 minutes into her headlining set Saturday night (2/13) at Union Pool. The question wasn't the shortness itself, but the abruptness of her departure: after getting increasingly frustrated with something, she kicked the drum set, gave the one-finger salute to her band and left, to the stunned then embarrassed faces of her supporting trio. The show was really just getting started. "As long as everyone had fun, that's what matters," said the bass player sheepishly before getting a lit cigarette thrown at him by the singer, in a brief return to the stage.

They did manage to get through "I Hate People," a cover of "Band on the Run" and a handful of others (though not "Heartbeats" which one of the most enthusiastic fans requested as a not-to-be encore). It was an awkward hometown end to nearly a month of touring.

Openers Harlem were admirably sloppy and enthused (it's hard not to think of a less manic Black Lips). Their animated, banadana-ed singer/guitarist and more straight-laced drummer swapped roles halfway through the set, which brought out a different dynamic for sure - round two was cleaner with more of a focus on pointed guitar riffs and less on effusive vocals. The Austin band's second album is due this summer on Matador, and they'll be touring the West Coast for the next few weeks.

Jemina's next scheduled show/shows are SXSW. The full Ecstatic Peace SXSW showcase lineup (Thurston Moore, J Mascis & Andrew WK included), more Union Pool pictures, a video and Harlem tour dates are below...

Pissed Jeans at MHOW (more by Chloe Rice)
Pissed Jeans

Including their recent appearance at WFMU Fest, Pissed Jeans have booked three shows in NYC in the month of October. The first is part of the Sub Pop/Hardly Art showcase at Mercury Lounge which will include a stellar lineup of Male Bonding, Obits, Golden Triangle, The Dutchess & The Duke, Moondoggies, Dum Dum Girls, and Unnatural Helpers. $12 to get in and there are no advance tickets.

Compare/contrast that lineup, which covers a wide spectrum of styles, with Pissed Jeans' show on 10/30 at Le Poisson Rouge billed as "NYU Halloween Punk/Hardcore Fest". Pissed Jeans will headline with support coming from Awesome Color, Drunkdriver, My Mind, The Sleepies, and Ex-Wife. Tickets are only $2 if you have an NYU ID and $5 without and, um, costumes are highly encouraged.

Sub Pop CMJ set times, and a live video of Pissed Jeans below...

The Homosexuals

Matador Records helped Sonic Youth celebrate the release of their new record The Eternal with a party at Home Sweet Home on the Lower East Side of Manhattan last Friday. The semi-private show had local bands playing Sonic Youth covers while the actual Sonic Youth was hanging out in the crowd.

Bands included The Antlers, Tiny Masters of Today, Apache Beat, The Homosexuals (backed by members of Fiasco), and "The Goo Believers" (at least that's what I think they called themselves). They were Chris Brokaw (Come, Codeine), Jemina Pearl (Be Your Own Pet, Ecstatic Peace label), Matt Krefting (Ecstatic Peace label), Zachary Cale, John Maloney (Sunburned Hand of the Man), and Jaiko Suzuki (Electroputas). You can see Thurston Moore watching them from the sidelines in some of the pictures below...

HEALTH's new disc, GET COLOR, comes out September 8th on Lovepump United. A single for the song "DIE SLOW" came out in April. It's now streaming with its b-side/remix on the band's site.

USAISAMONSTER

sad but triumphant night

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2009 4:47 AM

Was it as epic as the Bjork/Dirty Projectors show? I mean will it live on in infamy like that show? I mean will you be telling your kids 20 years from now how you were at this show?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2009 5:18 AM

fuck your kids. :) USAISAMONSTER was great.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2009 2:29 PM

USAISAMONSTER's final show happened Saturday, May 9th at the newly-decorated Market Hotel in Brooklyn. The bill included Awesome Color, Juiceboxxx, Eloe Omoe, Tunnel of Love, Bow Ribbons, Jason Crumer, Animental, Hot Box and Buck Gooter. At one point the show was stopped and the cops showed up because someone passed out. They left the club in an ambulance (I hope he is OK!), but the show went on. More pictures (including the ambulance) below...

DOWNLOAD: Iran - "Buddy" (MP3)

Iran @ CMJ 2008
Iran

Iran (WITH Kyp Malone) will play a show at Glasslands Gallery in Brooklyn, TONIGHT (12/18). Also on the bill: Fakers and Lone Wolf and Cub (Ryan Sawyer of Tall Firs and Stars Like Fleas - not the metal band). Presumably, Iran will, uh, run... through tracks from their upcoming record Dissolver, due on Feb 3, 2009 via Narnack.

Back to CMJ for a second....before 2 Live Crew played, a Kyp-less-and-still-named-after-a-'rogue-nation', Iran, played a renamed-The Soft Pack-less (they cancelled) and Lee "Scratch" Perry-less (he cancelled) Narnack Showcase this year, at Santos Party House, with the Sundelles, Vaz and Restavrant. Check out the overdue pics from that show above and below, and note - that's Doug Anson that sat in for Kyp. That probably won't happen again though, as we're told that Kyp plans on playing many more shows with the band, including as part of a 2009 tour out of NYC.

In related news, Kyp Malone's other band TV On The Radio, is garnering accolades-a-plenty including album of the year from The Onion AV Club, and from everyone's favorite weirdo Eric Wareheim of Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!. The Onion AV Club also cornered Santos Party House co-owner Andrew WK about his favorite record of the year.... Lee "Scratch" Perry's Repentance. Hmm... didn't he have something to do with that record?

In more related-to-Glasslands-tonight news, Tall Firs have teamed up with Awesome Color to play the Knitting Factory on Dec 19th (tickets here). Ryan Sawyer's other band, Stars Like Fleas, are recording a new record and have scheduled a show at Le Poisson Rouge on January 24th with Au (tickets here).

A whole bunch of pictures from the Narnack CMJ showcase, and tonight's Glasslands flyer, below...
