Kaytranada & Vic Mensa
Kaytranada

Last year, Montreal producer Kaytranada signed to XL and said he'd be releasing an EP on the label. He since decided to turn that into a full album, and while details like a title and release date are still TBA, a new single came out not long ago featuring past collaborator Vic Mensa. It's called "Drive Me Crazy." You can listen, with previous single "Leave Me Alone" (ft. Shay Lia), below.

Kaytranda also has a bunch of tour dates coming up, including a few festival appearances. This month, he'll be at SXSW where he'll play the Ray-Ban/Boiler Room show which he curated. Aside from Kaytranada himself, the show also features sets from Madlib, Ghostface Killah, Rae Sremmurd, STWO, Shash'u and Badbadnotgood. No venue announced yet, but it goes down Wednesday (3/18) from 9 PM to 2 AM. Apply for a ticket here. Listen to the mix STWO made for the show, below.

After SXSW, Kaytranada heads to California for Coachella, and later on comes to NYC for Governors Ball. All dates are listed below.

Vic Mensa also plays SXSW, including the Chicagomade showcase with Twin Peaks and others.

Ferg

Late last year, A$AP Ferg returned with the new mixtape Ferg Forever, a nice tide-over while we wait for the followup to his excellent Trap Lord. In the past week, he's dropped videos for two of that mixtape's tracks. The first was for "Doe-Active," directed by Spike Jordan and featuring a cameo from Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig, and the second was for "Dope Walk," directed by Matt Starr and featuring appearances by Kanye West, Beyonce, A$AP Rocky, Big Sean, Haim, Rihanna and Justin Bieber. Watch both below.

In related news, this Sunday (3/1) at Brooklyn Night Bazaar, A$AP Nast and A$AP Twelvyy will play a free show presented by DXC/Dunkxchange. At the show, you can buy, sell and trade sneakers and apparel. There will also be performances by GRZLXMODE and GI Dara, and music by DJ Mpure and DJ Rob Cast. Unlike most BKNB shows this one is ticketed ($15 advance, $20 at the door) and the flyer is below.

Ferg also has shows coming up, mostly in Australia and New Zealand, but also a couple US festivals including Pitchfork. All dates are listed below.

A$AP Rocky's also on board for US festival BUKU Music + Art Project happening in New Orleans on March 13 & 14 with Passion Pit, TV on the Radio, Run the Jewels, BADBADNOTGOOD & Ghostface Killah, DJ Windows 98, Die Antwoord, Flosstradamus, RL Grime, Portugal. Ghostface

Toronto instrumental trio BadBadNotGood have teamed with Ghostface Killah for a new album, Sour Soul, which will be out Feb 24 via Lex Records. The band provide all the music -- the LP is 100% sample-free -- and was inspired by music from the '60s and '70s. Their styles go together well, judging from the two tracks have been released from the album so far. One of them, "Ray Gun," features DOOM whom Ghostface is collaborating on the long-planned/delayed DOOMSTARKS project. You can stream "Ray Gun," as well as "Gunshowers," featuring Elzhi, below.

Ghostface is busy these days. He released the 36 Seasons solo album last year along with the new Wu-Tang Clan album, A Better Tomorrow, and he said in a recent Reddit AMA that the DOOMSTARKS album would see release in 2015. There's also the other Wu-Tang album, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, which they're only making one copy of which will be sold via auction, and that's supposed to happen this year as well. We'll see. He and Raekown are also playing Coachella together.

Speaking of BadBadNotGood, if you didn't hear their reworking of Future Islands' "Seasons," that is worth seeking out.

Future Islands @ Death by Audio last week
dba-fi

Future Islands's "Seasons" topped NME's Tracks of 2014 list and will likely be on others before best-of list season is over. The band just released a "reinterpretation" of the song by avant-jazz trio BADBADNOTGOOD, who turn it into a '70s-style soul/funk jam. That band's bassist, Chester Hansen, talks a little about what they did with "Seasons":

We all love the original version of the song, and we were honored to have the opportunity to try and remix it. We heard Sam's isolated singing and realized how soulful and emotive it was and what seemed to sound the best was re-harmonizing the chords and taking it in a soul direction. We came up with a slow groove for the verse that let the vocals breathe, and played the chorus double time to make it more powerful. After we laid down the rhythm track, we overdubbed guitar, keys and a bunch of other parts to fill it out. We're very proud of it and so excited to share it with everyone.
You can stream BADBADNOTGOOD's "Seasons" remix below and you can download it from Amazon today for free.

Future Islands were one of the many bands who said goodbye to Death by Audio last week, playing last Tuesday (11/18) with The Immaculates (with Tim Harrington on one song), DJ Dog Dick and Adam Schatz & The Farewell to Death by Audio Suite. We already posted one set of pics from that show and we've got a second set in this post.

Future Islands' next shows in NYC are somewhere much bigger (with slightly nicer bathrooms), Terminal 5 on January 8 & 9. Tickets are still available for the 1/8 show (the 1/9 show is sold out). All tour dates are listed, along with the "Seasons" reinterpretation and more pics from DbA, below...

Rough Trade NYC on Record Store Day 2014 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
RT

As they usually are, Rough Trade Shops are one of the first this year to post their favorite albums of 2014 list. It's 100 albums long and mostly filled with the bigger indie and indie-related releases of the year, but there's a few surprises in there too. Mark Kozelek will not be happy to see that The War On Drugs placed #2, 8 higher than the Sun Kil Moon record. Mark should be proud that he made the list not once, but TWICE though. His Christmas album landed at #84. Run the Jewels, who are not on it all, have started a "Suck My Dick Rough Trade" chant. Check out their full list below and see more on each album here.

Meanwhile, Rough Trade the NYC venue is open this weekend with Sallie Ford / Crooked Fingers tonight, followed by two shows from The Dream Syndicate.

List below...

Heat @ Union Pool during CMJ (more by Amanda Hatfield)
M for Montreal

M for Montreal was just here for CMJ, hosting a nine-hour showcase on Friday (10/24) at Arlene's Grocery with Lydia Ainsworth, HEAT, Homeshake, The Muscadettes and more. If you went, how was it? Those artists and a lot more will also be playing the ninth edition of the actual M for Montreal festival which happens in the Quebec city from November 19-22. Like the last few years, the first two days of M are more of an industry event with only "official selection" showcases, including performances by Operators, BADBADNOTGOOD, Ainsworth, July Talk, HEAT and more. Then on the weekend it moves into proper festival mode with shows all over the city and bands from all over the world, including Thee Oh Sees, Wrekmeister Harmonies, Toro Y Moi side project Les Sins, The Blind Shake, Nils Frahm, PyPy, Moon King, and lots more.

Badges are on sale now, as are tickets for many individual shows. Full line-up for M for Montreal 2014 below...

BBNG at BV-SXSW 2014 (more by Tim Griffin)
BBNG

Canadian jazz hop trio BadBadNotGood just dropped a new track, "Velvet," which has a bit of a retro feel as far as BBNG's stuff is usually concerned. You can check it out below. They've also got tour dates coming up on the west coast this month, and a couple Northeast dates have been announced for December. Possibly more TBA, but we know they'll play NYC on December 6 at Bowery Ballroom. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (10/10) at noon.

Black Milk at FFF 2011 (more by Fred Pessaro)
Black Milk

Detroit rapper Black Milk put out a new collaboration with Toronto jazz hop trio BADBADNOTGOOD this week, "Now or Never," which will appear on Converse's forthcoming Cons EP Vol. 2 EP. BBNG's dark production is an excellent backdrop for Black Milk's sinister rhymes, as you can hear for yourself by streaming or downloading it below.

Black Milk is also releasing a new album, If There's A Hell Below, on October 28 via his own Computer Ugly label. Tracklist for that hasn't been released yet, but album artwork is below. Leading up to the release, Black Milk will go on a tour backed by the Nat Turner Band. That tour hits NYC on October 17 at The Studio at Webster Hall. Tickets for the NYC show go on sale today (8/8) at 10 AM.

All dates are listed, with the LP artwork and BADBADNOTGOOD collab, below...

BrooklynVegan SXSW Thursday Day Party - Red 7

Though everyone was shaken up from the previous night's tragic events (which happened not far from and during the official BrooklynVegan showcase on Wednesday night), SXSW moved forward on Thursday morning, when we began our first of three day parties at Red 7.

Our day shows took place on the indoor and outdoor stages of Red 7, with the indoor stage on Thursday staying (mostly) on the folkier/quieter side with San Fermin, Sylvan Esso, Rhett Miller of the Old 97s, Torres, Nicole Atkins, Cate Le Bon and Basia Bulat. Meanwhile, the outside that day was crazier and a little more random with Little Dragon, Roosevelt, BadBadNotGood (joined by Odd Future's Tyler, the Creator), Nothing, Trash Talk, Overdoz, Cities Aviv and Calvin Love.

Basia Bulat was a nice start to the day where she performed solo with an autoharp, ukulele, and keyboard. Cate Le Bon did a fine job following with her full band who got pretty intense at the end. Then it was singer/songwriter Nicole Atkins who played songs from her new Slow Phaser (catch her on tour with Nick Cave), followed by the grungy folk of Torres (who previewed some new material), followed by Old 97's frontman Rhett Miller who had a ton of fun with the show and did a bunch of covers like Tom Petty's "American Girl" and Pixies' "Wave of Mutilation." After Rhett, Sylvan Esso, the duo of Mountain Man's Amelia Meath and Megafaun's Nick Sanborn, had the indoor crowd moving more than anyone else that day with their synthy pop and Amelia's dance moves. And San Fermin wrapped things up with their orchestral pop.

BrooklynVegan SXSW Thursday Day Party - Red 7

Outside, Calvin Love and his band woke everyone up with their indie rock, which was followed by the noise rap of Cities Aviv and the weed-obsessed rap of Overdoz. Then things got kicked up ten notches for Trash Talk, who opened up the entire floor outside at Red 7 for a circle pit and kept egging on the crowd, Damian of Fucked Up included, the whole set. Nothing followed, keeping the heavy vibe in tact, but in more atmospheric ways. Then the vibe totally changed as jazz hop trio BadBadNotGood played (including a Flying Lotus cover). Their set was instrumental... until the last two songs when they were joined by Odd Future's Tyler, the Creator (who's collaborated with them before). Tyler and BBNG really got the crowd going, and though many filtered out after their set, a new batch of people quickly filled it back up for Roosevelt and the Swedish electro party that was Little Dragon.

Thanks to Life or Death for helping make things happen, and to all our sponsors. We served complimentary drinks courtesy of Jameson, and had Shiner beer specials all day long, free Veri organic soda, Frito pies courtesy of HomeState, and free popcorn at the Marshall Headphones booth where you could win headphones every hour on the hour if you tagged your Instagrams #BVMarshall.

Little Dragon

Nokia MixRadio was on site educating us about their free music service and playing the BrooklynVegan MixRadio SXSW playlist between bands. Indiegogo was there with free earplugs and conversation. Songboard, a new "music destination that offers artists and bands essential services and unique capabilities to maximize potential" was there too and with free thumb drives and education. We let in 20 people each day who were taking advantage of Esurance's SXSW-wide #EsuranceAccess program.

Special thanks to all of our bands and everyone who helped make it all possible, including you. Thanks everyone who made it out, and sorry to everyone who waited on line but didn't get in (the fire marshals were cracking down on venues more than ever this year.).

One set of pictures from this party is posted over at BV Austin. Check out more pictures from the whole day (by Amanda Hatfield except where specified), below...

flyer

After a Wednesday night official showcase at the same venue, BrooklynVegan will take over both stages of Red 7 during the hours of noon-6pm each day on Thursday (3/13), Friday (3/14) and Saturday (3/15) of SXSW Music. Saturday's lineup is announced. Friday is on the way. Here is Thursday!

THURSDAY, MARCH 13, 2014 @ RED 7 (FREE)

INSIDE
12:00 Basia Bulat
12:45 Cate Le Bon
01:45 Nicole Atkins
02:30 Torres
03:30 Rhett Miller (of the Old 97's)
04:30 Sylvan Esso
05:15 San Fermin

OUTSIDE
12:00 Calvin Love
12:40 Cities Aviv
01:00 Overdoz
01:30 Trash Talk
02:10 Nothing
03:00 BadBadNotGood w/ special guest Tyler the Creator
04:00 Roosevelt
05:00 Little Dragon

Please RSVP, and show up early to see all the bands and to ensure you get some complimentary drinks courtesy of Jameson (while supplies last).

We'll also have Shiner beer specials all day long, free Veri organic soda, free Frito Pies from HomeState (while they last!), and free popcorn at the Marshall Headphones booth where you can pose in our photobooth and where someone will win a pair of headphones every hour on the hour!

This party should be especially interesting since we managed to create a pretty diverse lineup across the two stages all in one day. Basia Bulat into Cate Le Bon into Nicole Atkins into Torres into Rhett Miller into San Fermin will be a dream for some who will probably not want to step outside at all during our two early rap sets (Cities Aviv & Overdoz) and the heaviness Trash Talk and Nothing will bring.

The outside stage on this party was a collaboration with Life or Death who work with many of those artists, including Trash Talk (excited to have Trash Talk back on a BV SXSW show again), Odd Futures's Tyler the Creator (ditto), and our outside headliner Little Dragon who they manage. Thanks to them for the support and for helping us present my favorite Swedish electro-band Little Dragon again.

Those who want to dance can hopefully make it from Roosevelt;s outside set to Sylvan Esso's inside one, and then back out for Little Dragon. If capacity doesn't allow that, it's still a winning situation whichever stage you end up at.

Nokia MixRadio will be on site educating us about their free music service. Indiegogo will be on hand to answer all your crowdfunding questions. Songboard, a new "music destination that offers artists and bands essential services and unique capabilities to maximize potential" will be there too to teach artists and fans more about their new company and what they can maybe do for you.

Again, this is one of three free BrooklynVegan day parties at Red 7 this year. Please RSVP once for entry to all three. SXSW badges are also welcome and be sure to stop by the Esurance Glove Box at the Austin Convention Center or their Fuel Lounge at 6th and Trinity to pick up an Esurance Access Pass. Then follow @esurance on Twitter to find out when and where you can hop the line for our party and others around Austin...

BBNG

Jazz hop trio BADBADNOTGOOD have announced they'll release a new album, III, on May 6 via their new label home, Innovative Leisure (Bass Drum of Death, Classixx). You can get a taste of the new album with first single, "Can't Leave the Night," which is streaming below.

The trio first caught our ears partially because of their covers of Odd Future, James Blake, My Bloody Valentine and more, in addition to collaborations with Odd Future. Those collaborations haven't stopped (they produced a track on Earl Sweatshirt's 2013 album, Doris), and they'll be joined by Tyler, the Creator as a special guest when they play the BrooklynVegan SXSW day party at Red 7 on Thursday, March 18. BBNG have other SXSW shows too, and their whole schedule is below. Stay tuned for BrooklynVegan's full SXSW day party lineups.

Bonde Do Role at Bowery Ballroom in 2008 (more by Bao Nguyen)
Bonde Do Role

Back in June, we mentioned that the Mad Decent Block Parties were returning this summer and then earlier this month, they revealed a list of artists, but didn't say who was playing each city. Now venues have been revealed for all five parties and the lineups for NYC Philly, and Toronto have been announced as well. The FREE NYC party will happen on August 5 at WIlliamsburg Park (in previous years it was at the South Street Seaport) with Major Lazer, Erol Alkan, Bonde Do Role, Lunice, Riff Raff, Mr Muthafuckin' eXquire, Reptar, Zebra Katz, Bosco Delrey, Baauer, Kito, and Paul Devro. The parties are free and all ages but RSVP is required. All announced lineups are listed below.

Speaking of Lunice, his collaborative project with Hudson Mohawke, TNGHT (pronounced "tonight") released their self titled debut EP this week (7/24) via Warp/Lucky Me. If you've yet to hear it, you can stream the entire thing below.

As for Bonde Do Role, the block party will be their first NYC show quite a while. You may remember that their original singer, Marina Ribatski left the band in 2007 and was replaced by two other singers, Ana Bernardino and Laura Taylor, who joined the band by winning an audition done with MTV Brasil. Ana has since left the band too and they are now a 3-piece fronted only by Laura Taylor. The new incarnation of the band put out their first album in five years, Tropical/Bacanal, last month via Mad Decent. The album was co-produced by Diplo and Filip Nikolic of Poolside (who have two NYC shows this week). The album features guest appearances from Caetano Veloso, Das Racist, Cecile, Rizzle Kicks, and The Death Set (who also has a NYC show coming up). The video for album track "Kilo" and a stream of another track, "Bang," which features Kool AD of Das Racist, are below.

Updated Mad Decent Block Parties info, the flier for the NYC party, video and streams are below.

Action Bronson at Red Hook Park in June (more by Eric M. Townsend)
Action Bronson

As I'm sure countless musicians who happened to have shows scheduled yesterday did from stage, Coldplay (at Hollywood Bowl and like they did at All Points West), BADBADNOTGOOD (at Brooklyn Bowl), and Bomb The Music Industry! Badbadnotgood

Jazz leaning instrumental hip hop trio BADBADNOTGOOD, made up of pianist Matt Tavares, bassist Chester Hansen, and drummer Alex Sowinski, released their second album, BBNG2, last month for free on their website. Their first album, live material, and singles, are also all available for free on their bandcamp.

The new album's got live instrument/jazzy takes on Odd Future (who they've collaborated with), James Blake, My Bloody Valentine, and Kanye West instrumentals, and a handful of originals as well. And if those covers just sound like a way for the group to get our attention...I can't say it isn't working. These kids (the whole band is under 21) can really play and the arrangements are tight. Also, somebody tell them to do a Death Grips track on their next record.

BADBADNOTGOOD have some dates coming up including a NYC show at TONIGHT (5/4) at Brooklyn Bowl with DJ Still Life. Tickets are available.

They recently played Coachella (but weren't part of the initial lineup announcement) and while they were there they also did some backing for Frank Ocean during his set. Check out videos of them from Coachella, along with music videos, other live videos, and a session with Tyler, the Creator below, along with all dates...
