The Body

Now that it's opened its doors and begun to regularly unleash a formidably awesome show schedule unto the unwashed masses, the Acheron may very well be one of Brooklyn's coolest new venues. Last Thursday, the Bushwick practice space-turned-DIY stronghold hosted a wicked lineup that brought locals Curandera, Bad Dream, and Atakke together with Providence's heaviest export, The Body.
Curandera started things off to a crawl with their black'n'white (fast'n'slow) grinding sludge violence, as Justin Ennis (also of NYC black metal horde Mutilation Rites) pounded his drums like they owed him money [ED: the band also features Monty of the much lamented ASRA]. Bad Dream came floating straight out of 1975 with their hypnotic, psych-tinged doom (think Pentagram with two clean-cut dudes on bass/guitar, a killer female drummer, and lots of delay). It may be 2010, but this power trio sure hasn't noticed! Thrash/death ragers Atakke brought the energy levels up about a billion percent, whipping up a perfect storm of headbanging, moshing, beer-soaked fury overseen and egged on by formidable frontwoman Chloe Puke (who recently got back from a touring adventure with me & some sweet bands - part 1 and part 2).
I'd personally never had the pleasure of seeing The Body before, so was stoked to join them as they kicked off an extensive US tour tonight. The burly two-man wrecking crew hauled out a collection of mammoth doom riffs from their new album (the viciously excellent All the Waters of the Earth Turn to Blood, out now on At A Loss), sweating buckets all the while. The Acheron rules, but god DAMN does it get hot in there! The Body's drummer Lee looked about ready to sweat his beard off, but plowed through their set with manic determination anyway. After laying down almost forty minutes of unsettlingly heavy, desolate, feedback-worshipping doom, the two men looked about ready to escape the heat - but were persuaded by the rabid heshers down the front to sit back down and bang out an encore (which totally ruled!).
Check out the rest of their tour dates below, look for them in NYC again on September 16th (more details on the way!), and go buy their goddamn record...
