Cibo Matto at Brooklyn Bowl in March (more by Adela Loconte)
Celebrate Brooklyn, the people behind the ongoing BRIC House shows and the upcoming Prospect Park shows, will be throwing more shows in between, the Celebrate Brooklyn Dance Parties at Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pier 1. There's three shows, all FREE, happening for three consecutive Thursdays in May. Each show features "a varied lineup of bands paired with DJs, on a great lawn with spectacular views of the city, plus dance lessons, free valet bike parking, food trucks" (many with specials based on the show's music genre) and more, and runs from 7 to 10 PM. Entry to the pier is at Old Fulton Street at the Brooklyn waterfront or from the new Squibb Park Bridge.
The first show will be headlined by the Gogol Bordello-related Balkan Beat Box on May 8, and also features DJ Joro Boro. On May 15, it's veteran NYC band Cibo Matto who are fully back in action with Javelin and Le Tigre/MEN's JD Samson. Then, finally on May 22 it's Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars (who played The Apollo earlier this month) with Okayafrica's Electrafrique w/ Chief Boima & DJ Underdog.
Meanwhile, BRIC is throwing a 'dance party' this Saturday (4/12) at the BRIC House with AndrewAndrew and a DJ set from Neon Indian, whose collaborator Leanne Macomber has a new NSFW video for her Ejecta project. Tickets for Saturday's show are still available. Full upcoming BRIC House schedule here.

The fourth-annual Brooklyn Rock Lottery will happen December 7 at Knitting Factory. As before...
The premise is simple, but effective. Twenty-five hand picked musicians meet at 10:00AM at the evenings performance venue. These volunteers are organized into five groups through a lottery-based chance selection. The five separate groups are then released to practice at different locations. The musicians have twelve hours to create a band name and three to five songs (with a one cover-song limit). The groups will then perform what they have created that evening in front of a waiting audience. While the full participating musician list hasn't been released yet, look for this year's Rock Lottery to include members of Small Black, Here We Go Magic, Porcelain Raft, Balkan Beat Box, Oneida, The Make-Up, Rainer Maria, and Cave In. Tickets are on sale now and all proceeds benefit the Willie Mae Rock Camp.
I went to last year's Rock Lottery and thought it was a lot of fun. You can check out a video feature on it below.

Jimmy Cliff at Prospect Park - 6/5/12
JImmy Cliff is planning to release a full album with Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong this July called Rebirth. It follows the Sacred Fire EP that the two did together last year. Jimmy was just interviewed about that and going back to his reggae roots for Chicago Tribune:
"We were planning to look back," says Cliff, 64, by phone from a tour stop near Connecticut, "but when I arrived, it was really satisfying, and I felt, 'I have to tap into this again.'"Jimmy will return to NYC next month for Groovin in the Park.
What Armstrong and Cliff came up with, late last year, was "Sacred Fire," an EP with roots-reggae versions of The Clash's "Guns of Brixton," Rancid's "Ruby Soho," Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall" and Cliff's "Ship Is Sailing." It's the first glimpse of Cliff's new direction with producer Armstrong -- they're planning a full album, "Rebirth," in mid-July. "He made me reflect and remember the values of those things that we did then. He opened that for me and allowed me to look into that again," Cliff says. "There's a tendency to move on and create something new."
Celebrate Brooklyn continues this week with a free Laura Marling show TONIGHT (6/14). That show also includes Michael Kiwanuka and Willy Mason.
