"Agh. Free Black Keys concert tonight at the Classic Car Club but lines were CRAZY!" - quiet soliloquy

Black Keys

"Fans have overwhelmingly expressed, in 354+ comments on The Black Keys Facebook page, that the band has "sold out" following an announcement that a new song, "Chop And Change", will be a part of the soundtrack for the third installment of extremely popular vampire movie franchise "Twilight".

The Black Keys' have sold out? Yeah, sure. If anything, they've finally just sold in on their own terms.

In most cases, the term "sold out" would be fantastic news to artists in regards to shows, books, CDs, etc. It simply claims that the artist/event is doing so well that they have run out of space or items and that it is pretty much exclusive and rare - a privilege, really. It's heartbreaking to the people who did not get a chance to be a part of it, but it does hint at success, which can obviously be rendered in many different ways. For people who appreciate "underground" or lesser-known works or talents, however, "selling out" is the worst possible brand that you can get from a fan - it pretty much means that you are now not good enough to be appreciated anymore, and that you are now "mainstream" or "too trendy."" [The Black Keys Fan Lounge]

The Black Keys, who are opening or Pearl Jam at MSG this week (and playing a benefit at Housing Works that will also be a temporary Black Keys pop up shop), and whose sole SXSW show this year was a T-Mobile-sponsored Mog show, played a Microsoft/Verizon Kin show in NYC last night (5/15). The show took place at the Classic Car Club in Tribeca, just like the Passion Pit one did one night earlier. A free Kin Ting Tings show also happened last night at a different venue.

No more Kin shows in NYC, but Chicago has one by The Dead Weather coming up. The Dead Weather (who also opened a pop up shop in NYC when their last record came out), along with Metric (who play NYC tonight/Sunday), Muse (who are taking Metric on tour), Band of Horses (who also open for Pearl Jam at MSG this week), Vampire Weekend and others, also appear on the new Twilight soundtrack. The full tracklisting and more pictures from the Kin show below...

Broken Social Scene @ Stubb's (SXSW 2010)
bss

Broken Social Scene is now streaming three songs from their new album at MySpace. The band will next be in NYC in May to play Webster Hall and Music Hall of Williamsburg. More dates HERE. Another set of pictures from the band's SXSW show at Stubb's (with The Besnard Lakes, Drive by Truckers and Band of Horses) continues below.

As previously mentioned, Stars will play their new album, The Five Ghosts (out June 22 and featuring contributions from BSS's Andrew Whiteman), in its entirety on their next tour. They're also taking votes at their website (soon) for what other songs they should play at the shows. That tour has been announced and includes NYC shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg (June 4) (tickets on sale Friday at noon) and Le Poisson Rouge (June 5) (tickets on sale Friday at 4pm). All dates and more album info, with those pictures, below...

Broken Social Scene

"I don't get to see these people. I don't see Leslie (Feist) any more. It's tough to see Amy (Millan) and Evan (Cranley) because they live in Montreal. Jimmy (Shaw) and Emily (Haines) have been on the road so much. They just came and we hung out in the studio for a few days in Toronto. Just to hang out was enough."

Broken Social Scene hasn't closed the door on collaborations, by any stretch. Metric's Haines and Shaw were invited onstage Thursday night to perform You Forgot It In People's show-stopping "Anthems For a Seventeen-Year-Old Girl," while stretches of the show featured a six-piece horn section, the Beauties acting as a sort of all-male chorus line and vocal contributions from Jason Collett. [Toronto Star]

SXSW Day Two startedd out for me with a performance by Sharon Van Etten who was heartachingly beautiful at St. David's Sanctuary. Sarah Jaffe and band followed - great folk/rock songs. Over at Stubb's Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw guesting on "Anthems For A Seventeen Year Old Girl" with Broken Social Scene was the highlight of their show filled with new songs from the forthcoming record. Band Of Horses preceded and were great but their set was a bit short. Let's Wrestle (who didn't make it to NYC before Austin, but did make it to SXSW) during the day at Lovejoy's was loud and excellent. The Victorian Room at the Driskill Hotel was a perfect venue for Olof Arnalds and probably the most attractive setting for a show I've been to yet.

Some pictures and commentary from SXSW Day 1 HERE. Pictures from Day 2 continue below...

Band of Horses @ Outside Lands 2009 (more by Chris Graham)
Band of Horses

Band of Horses will be down at SXSW this year. The folk-rockers are set to play two official showcases - one on Thursday, March 18th at Stubb's, and the other on March 19th at Central Presbyterian Church.

They're gearing up for the release of their third record, Infinite Arms, will be released on May 18th. It'll be their first on Brown Records/Fat Possum/Columbia - the band's first two were on Sub Pop. Cover art for that record is below.

Band of Horses have tour dates scheduled through the spring. On those, they'll share bills with the not-too-shabby likes of She & Him, Snow Patrol and Widespread Panic. In addition, Band of Horses will be opening all but one of the shows on Pearl Jam's US tour this May. The bands play Madison Square Garden on May 21st. The Black Keys (who play Central Park SummerStage this July) open Pearl Jam's show the day prior (5/20) also at MSG. Tickets go on Pearl Jam fan club presale March 16th at 3pm and 6pm for the MSG shows (others start March 15 at noon). General sale starts March 20th.

Pearl Jam performed on SNL on Saturday night (March 13th) - video from that and all tour dates are below...

Nicole Atkins @ Bowery Ballroom - Feb 3rd (more by Bao Nguyen)
Nicole Atkins

Nicole Atkins's SXSW Picks

1) High On Fire: I like my metal slooooow!

2) Roky Erickson with Okkervil River: I missed them last time I was at sxsw. I love both of these guys music so seeing them together I'm sure is going to be unreal!

3) Band of Horses: Yep, I missed the boat on these guys and have only recently discovered them. I have been listening to their last record on repeat for two weeks now.

Nicole can catch Roky Erickson with Okkervil River at the BV/M For Montreal day party at Galaxy Room on March 20th, and you can catch Nicole Atkins, backed by Future Clouds & Radar, at the BV day party at Club DeVille one day earlier! Nicole joins the growing list of bands on that show. I've also already announced Twin Sister, Centro-matic, Lucero, The Antlers and Pearly Gate Music. Full lineup TBA momemtarily. Nicole's full SXSW schedule is below.

And as previously mentioned, you can see Nicole Atkins perform tonight, Friday, March 12th at City Winery in NYC with Joseph Arthur, as part of his weekly Friday residency at the venue. Limited tickets are still on sale.

Then, on March 26th she'll be playing the first show at OHM, a new private show space in the lobby of a NYC high-rise in Chelsea...

OHM is a 37-story rental tower located at 312 11th Avenue in the West Chelsea district. There is over 25,000 square feet of amenity space in the tower, including the lobby which holds an intimate performance space. Knitting Factory Entertainment will be exclusively bringing live entertainment to this space.
The show is only open to residents of the building and their guests however. "The concept is to create an extremely intimate environment where artists can connect with a built-in crowd eager to participate in a unique experience."

Broken Social Scene @ Masonic Temple, Oct 2008 (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)
Broken Social Scene

Broken Social Scene will be releasing their new, as-yet-untitled album on May 4th, 2010 on Arts & Crafts. Co-produced by the band and Tortoise's John McEntire at Soma Studios in Chicago, with additional recording at Giant Studio and The Schvitz Studio in Toronto, the new album is the follow up to their acclaimed self-titled record, released in 2005.
It's hard to believe that the last BBS record came out more than four years ago. The new album's release will be accompanied by a short set of tour dates in North America and Europe. One of those will be "An Evening With Broken Social Scene" at NYC's Webster Hall on May 7th. Tickets to that are on Arts & Crafts presale now. (as are tickets for their L.A. and San Francisco shows). NYC tickets go on general sale Saturday, 2/16 at noon.

Tickets for BSS's Toronto Centre Island (Olympic Island) show on June 19th are also on sale. Toronto Island Concert will be a full-day festival with Band of Horses and co-headlined by Pavement. More acts are TBA.

Pavement, whose reunion shows are slowly creeping up, recently released the tracklist of their best-of comp, Quarantine The Past: Greatest Hits 1989-1999, coming out March 9th on Matador. Tracklist, album art and updated tour dates are below. A remastered version of "Gold Soundz" from the comp is posted above.

Happy Holidays! I take on more than I can handle. That results in a lot of unposted content. In the name of catching up, while also taking it easy during this final week of the year, here's some of that lost material.

Tenacious D
MIA
The Dead Weather

For what was the worst day weather-wise for San Francisco's Outide Lands Festival, its last day (Sunday, August 30th) may have been the best musically. Cold fog and wind took the place of cloudless, sunny skies, but those who attended witnessed sets by Modest Mouse, the Dead Weather, the Avett Brothers, Band of Horses, Calexico, Matt & Kim , and soul legends Robert Randolph and Betty Layvette, and MIA, who complained via Twitter about the fest's substitution of Tenacious D for the Beastie Boys, then covered two Beasties songs, "Intergalactic" and "Sabatage, in her set.

Scrambling to find replacement headliners for the Beastie Boys was a common theme for festivals in summer '09, after the group was forced to cancel all dates when Adam Yauch was dianosed with cancer (he's since had sugery, and reports say that part of his health regiment is a vegan/organic diet). Beastie Boys' slot was filled by Jay-Z at All Points West and Yeah Yeah Yeahs at Lollapalooza

Band of Horses @ Carnegie Hall - June 11, 2009 (mcdeezily)
Band of Horses

"After a couple quick frosty beverages in the Carnegie Hall museum (got a little history lesson, saw a lot of autographed pics) we settled into our seats to see BOH take the stage about 9:15. The combination of it being an acoustic performance and being in Carnegie Hall made for a impressive performance that highlighted lead singer Ben Bridwell's vocals and the bands' haunting overall sound. They played around with a few tunes, playing 'Weed Party' a little quicker than usual and 'Wicked Gil' a little slower. The latter got a heckle from an audience member who shouted "Pick up the pace." To which Bridwell slyly responded, "We're gonna slow it down for you guys a bit" before launching into a stripped down version of 'The Funeral'." [Happy Genius Heroes]

Street Scene

"STREET SCENE, one of the nation's longest running music festivals, will celebrate its 25th anniversary with two full days of music Friday, August 28 and Saturday, August 29. The Black Eyed Peas, M.I.A., Thievery Corporation, Modest Mouse, The Dead Weather and Cake are among the more than 35 acts that will bring the streets of downtown San Diego's East Village neighborhood alive with music and entertainment from 4:00 PM to midnight daily. The venue site will include Tailgate Park (adjacent to Petco Park) in the heart of East Village, incorporating 14th Street as the main thoroughfare and bordered by Imperial Avenue to J Street."
2009 is the 25th anniversary of the festival which was launched in 1984. This year's festival also has WAVVES on the lineup, which means three shows total now scheduled for the band. Full lineup below...

Lollapalooza

"Though promoters around the country report strong early ticket sales for festivals and summer tours, the recession is causing jitters. This year Coachella, which has the most glamorous reputation of all American festivals, began selling tickets on layaway, and 18 percent of its customers took that option, Mr. Tollett said.

The proliferation of big festivals, like Bonnaroo near Nashville and Lollapalooza in Chicago, has not been without casualties. This year Langerado in Miami shut down, citing the economy. The Pemberton Festival in British Columbia is on hiatus after only one year, although its promoter, Live Nation, said the problem was permit delays." [NY Times]

With all the leaks of bands playing Lollapalooza this year, there are almost no surprises in the official lineup announcement, except maybe the Animal Collective DJ set... The whole thing below...

Like last year, the San Francisco fest shares a headliner with NJ's All Points West. In 2008, it was Radiohead. In 2009, it's the Beastie Boys.

Also on the schedule for the fest is the Dead Weather, Jack White's new band. Dead Weather plays its first show tonight (April 14th) at the Bowery Ballroom.

M.I.A., Ween, TVOTR, Mastodon, Os Mutantes, Extra Golden, Tom Jones, and many others are also playing. Full Outside Lands line-up and poster below....

Richard Buckner

Modern troubadour Richard Buckner will play a Friday, March 20th NYC show at Mercury Lounge with Arbouretum, Ruby Throat, and Lia Ices
(tickets on sale) before heading out an April/May US tour in support of three previously out-of-print, Merge-reissued CDs.

Bloomed, The Hill, and Impasse are all up now as digital downloads on the Merge online store. In his extended take on the old discs (read it below), Buckner writes that he plans to release a new record on the label in 2010, his first since 2006's Meadow.

Song of the PearlOpening the Mercury Lounge show is Arbouretum, who just released a new album, Song of the Pearl, on March 9th on Thrill Jockey. Check out the first track on the album, "False Spring", above.

"For two albums, a split EP, and who knows how many lineup changes, Arbouretum has reached further and further inward, honing and intensifying an idiosyncratic sound that is both doomy and folky, visceral and transcendent. They're powerful songs that sound both angry and melancholic, yet carry a sort of internal hypnotic, pacifying churn. The band's newest release, Song of the Pearl, is its most refined and to-the-point--the noodling of 2007's Rites of Uncovering is gone, the stylistic experiments are exhausted."
[Baltimore City Paper]
Arbouretum is also going on an April tour with Love as Laughter, and playing a few dates with Band of Horse in June. That includes the show at Carnegie Hall on June 11th.

Buckner reissued press release and vids, and all tour dates below...

Band of Horses @ ACL

"It was 6 o'clock on Sunday evening and the sun was setting on another Austin City Limits music festival. We ambled over to the Dell stage to check out The Band of Horses. At this point, I felt like I had inhaled about 40 lbs. of dust. Remember last years lush green landscapes and temperate climate? Well, this year was more akin to the "dust bowl" ACL Festival of 2006. With very little rain this summer and strict watering restrictions, I could see why, but it didn't make it any easier.
Back to the music.
We got to the stage early because some friends had a blanket pretty close to the stage and we didn't want to miss a minute of the show. Plus, we needed to rest our dogs after all the walking.
Band of Horses took the stage at approximately 6:28, ready to rock for the masses. Immediately, from the first notes of "First Song" off of their 2006 debut "Everything All of the Time," you knew that this show was going to be a good one. It was."

Bumbershoot

Darondo--wiry and hyperkinetic in a flashy suit, gold sneakers, and white hat--hit the stage while Moschella and company backed him. The sexagenarian busted astonishing James Brown-cum-Michael Jackson moves, and belted out songs with a weathered tenor that suggested a cross between Al Green and The Spinners' Bobby Smith. He flat-out commanded the stage, delivering everything from moral indignation on "Let My People Go" to deliciously libidinous boudoir funk on "Legs". Dear God in a velour tuxedo, he was nothin' short of a revelation. [Pop Culture Petri Dish]
