A record-breaking number of Spider-Men, Wonder Women and preteen titans crammed into the Javits Center for the four-day New York Comic Con -- many of them in their costumed finest. The 2014 NY Comic Con happened over the weekend, bringing record crowds (many of whom dressed for the occasion) to the event -- the NYC edition is finally starting to catch up to San Diego. Organizers expect the attendance to surpass 150,000 by the time the convention wraps up on Sunday.
"It's the worst day to wear body paint in the rain," Susan Li, 29, who was covered head-to-toe in pink as X-Men superhero Blink, said Saturday.
"But when you have some hardcore fan recognize you as your character, that makes the two hours of painting yourself worth it."
"It allows me to be who I am inside" Cici James, 30, who owns her own sci-fi bookstore, Singularity, in Brooklyn, said of the chance to dress up in her very form-fitting costume.
Queens resident Julian Keller, 22, spent more than 200 hours with his father to create the perfect General Zod costume, which would have made Superman do a double take. - [NY Daily News]

While Twinkies have a reputation for an unlimited shelf life, the company that makes the junk food may not not.I won't be running out and stocking up on any Twinkies. I mean, they're gross, but I can't help feeling nostalgic for the products that poisoned my body as a child and the ads that helped them do it! Continue the trip down memory lane and/or feeling hungry and/or disgusted and/or find some more ironic t-shirt ideas, below...
Hostess Brands, the bankrupt maker of cream-filled pastries like Twinkies and Ho Hos, said on Friday that it planned to wind down its operations. The decision comes a week after one of the company's biggest unions went on strike to protest a labor contract.
Friday's move could spell the end of Hostess, a company that has endured wars, countless diet fads and even an earlier Chapter 11 filing. But the liquidation may not mean the end of its signature product, the Twinkie, with its cake exterior and cream filling. The confection -- originally banana flavored, rather than the vanilla of today -- could find new life under a different owner, if the company auctions off its brands and assets.
In the short term, Twinkies may be in short supply. The last batches rolled off Hostess production lines early Friday morning, according to Tom Becker, a company spokesman, and no new products will be made for the time being. [NY Times]

To quote a June 7th press release in my inbox:
With the release of their debut studio album, O! Be Joyful (ORG Music), earlier this week, THE TOOTHACHES have unleashed their dynamic, dance-punk sound on the masses.Chris, full name Christopher Rapoza, was one of the many shot by that psychopath in Colorado... To quote Gothamist:
Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, THE TOOTHACHES are a five-piece band comprised of Zimmy (Guitar, Vocals), Rose (Keys, Vocals), Monica (Tambo, Glock, Vocals), Kiril (Drums, Vocals) and Chris (Bass, Vocals).
With New Yorkers feeling the aftereffects of Wednesday's horrible massacre in Aurora, Colorado, it turns out at least two area residents were among the survivors. Christopher Rapoza, a musician from Brooklyn, and Stephen Barton, a Southbury, Connecticut native and recent Syracuse University graduate, were both at the midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises when suspected gunman James Holmes began shooting; both were shot, but are recovering. So glad to hear Stephen and Chris and Perry (and many others) came out of there okay, and of course our condolences go out to all the families and friends of those who didn't.
Rapoza, who plays bass for local punk band The Toothaches and was in Colorado on a trip with his girlfriend, received a grazing wound on his back during the shooting and was treated at an area hospital. He linked to photos of his wound and bloodied t-shirt on Reddit (and as the photos show, he's lucky!), "I'm doing all right just a little shook up," he wrote on the site. "Me and my girlfriend waited until it seemed the shooting was finished so we were some of the last people out of the theatre and there was a lot of blood." He had also posted on Facebook, "Perry and I were just at a midnight showing of Batman in Colorado when some f***ing psycho decided to open fire on the crowd. "I was grazed in the back with a bullet but am fine. Perry is unscathed, but unfortunately has lost her shoes. A lot of other people weren't so lucky."
The Toothaches, who maybe you caught at Hillstock in June or at Aputumpu Fest in March, cancelled a 7/20 NYC show at The Bitter End due to the shooting, but are still scheduled to play on 7/28 at Big Mouth in Brooklyn with Eula, Celestial Shore, and many more, and on 8/9 at Shea Stadium. You can download "Pretty and Loud" from their new album above.
Actor Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday of a possible drug overdose in a Lower Manhattan apartment, the New York Police Department said. The Academy Award nominated actor was 28. "Pills were found in the vicinity of the bed," police spokesman Paul Browne told CNN.
"This is being looked at as a possible overdose, but that is not confirmed yet." Police later said the pills "appear to be over the counter" sleeping medication. Ledger was unresponsive when he was found by a housekeeper who had gone to wake him for an appointment with a masseuse in the Soho apartment, Browne said. [CNN]

Phosphorescent @ Sound Fix, Brooklyn, NY - Dec 13, 2007 (CRED)
Richard Hawley @ Other Music, NYC - Dec 3, 2007 (CRED)
The Bowery show Saturday night was the first night of that tour and he had the crowd right where he wanted from minute one. The show was a lot like his Sin-e performance in March of last year. Hawley is a pro, as are his ace backing band, and his velvet croon was in perfect form. It was such a class act, it's one of the few times I wish the show had been somewhere like Joe's Pub, which would have been the perfect place to see him. (He's actually played there before, solo acoustic in July 2005 -- his only other NYC show was the Sin-e gig.) And we only got one song from Late Night Final ("Something Is"), and none from Lowedges or his debut. But when the mirrorball came on for his waltz-time single, "Hotel Room," it was one of those perfect moments where you felt happy to be just where you are. Phosphorescent at Sound Fix and Richard Hawley at Bowery Ballroom where two of my favorites shows in December - both of which I forgot to post about afterwards. I wasn't actually at the Hawley Other Music show, but I liked the above pic of it better than any I saw from Bowery. Speaking of Other Music, they posted the video from the No Age in-store. Speaking of No Age, they're touring with Liars (Brooklyn show = 2/9 @ Warsaw) (and 2/11 @ ?).
I really loved No Country For Old Men. Have you seen it? Have you seen Juno, The Great Debaters, Walk Hard, or There Will Be Blood yet? What about the new Batman trailer? Are you excited for The Hobbit?
What else? Some videos below....
