ACL Festival - Weekend 2 - Day 2 - Saturday - 10/11/2014

ACL Fest Weekend 2 continued on Saturday (10/11) after kicking off a day earlier. We caught sets from Eminem, Skrillex, Broken Bells, Major Lazer, Lana Del Rey, Icona Pop, The Head and the Heart, My Brightest Diamond, Interpol, Polica, Mac DeMarco and a few others, and pictures of those are in this post. There was a short rain delay with anything before 12:30 getting cancelled, but otherwise the second Saturday of the fest went off without a hitch.

Stay tuned for pictures of weekend 2 day 3. Check out weekend 2 day 1 pictures HERE and all three days of weekend 1 pictures HERE. More of weekend 2 day 2, below...

ACL Festival Day 2 - 10/4/2014

...but then crowd density reared its ugly head again with the battle of the headliners: EDM master Skrillex and established rapper Eminem. From the midway point of the festival grounds, dozens of teens were spotted running full tilt in the direction of Skrillex from Major Lazer's set, while older generations seemed to migrate toward Eminem. Skrillex kicked off his bass-heavy dubstep right on time, dousing the electric crowd with lasers. In the meantime, Slim Shady got a slower start, getting underway nearly 10 minutes late and with a video intro that was lost on tens of thousands who just weren't close enough to hear. Including this one, who instead threw in the towel and headed for home. [Sound Spike]
The first weekend of 2014's Austin City Limits Festival is now over, with the city gearing back up for a second round this weekend. Although the festival's second day was marred by some intermittent showers, killer sets were still plentiful from Eminem, Skrillex, Lana Del Rey, Major Lazer, Interpol, Broken Bells, tUnE-yArDs, Mac DeMarco, Polica, My Brightest Diamond, The Rosebuds and plenty more. Pictures from those sets and more are in this post.

Check out pics from Day 1 and pics from Day 3. More of Day 2 below...

The Cure / Matt & Kim & a colorful fan
Voodoo
Voodoo
Voodoo

Like they did at ACL and Osheaga and Lollapalooza, The Cure co-headlined Voodoo Fest this year. To be more specific, they helped helped close out the final day of the 2013 New Orleans 'Experience' on Sunday night....

"Smith opened with the tight rockers "Shake Dog Shake" and "Fascination Street," and took the crowd through a winding tour of the band's catalog, playing breathless, ecstatic classics such as "Just Like Heaven," "Friday I'm In Love," "Lovesong" and "Pictures of You," as well as deeper cuts. Notably, he also delivered a red-letter day for the Cure-fan timeline: Sunday night, apparently, was the first time the band performed "Burn," popularized by the 1994 film (and icon of goth culture) "The Crow."" [NOLA.com]
Matt & Kim, Dr. John, Bassnectar, Kid Rock and others also played on Sunday which was also the final day of 'Soundwave' this 2013 festival season. Compared to other festivals we went to this summer, Voodoo was definitely a bit light on the number of bands we're fans of, but it's still a great time.

Like SPIN and sometimes Pure Volume and sometimes Hype Machine, BrooklynVegan was responsible for two hours of entertainment a day inside the Toyota Soundwave tent at each festival it appeared. We did at Firefly, at Lollapalooza, at Outside Lands, at Bumbershoot, and finally at Voodoo Day 1, Voodoo Day 2 and Voodoo Day 3 where we closed out the BrooklynVegan portion with a special set by the Jingle Punks Hipster Orchestra who also played 90 minutes earlier on the Carnival Stage. Rusty Lazer, instead of DJing with Big Freedia in Brooklyn, closed out SPIN's Soundwave portion with a multiple hour DJ set.

Pictures from the day are in this post and continue below....

Those additions join previously announced names like Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, Desaparecidos and more. Tickets for the festival are still available.

Sasquatch

"Following last year's 10th anniversary, which crushed previous attendance records and set a new mark for the speed with which tickets sold out, the Sasquatch! Music Festival unveils its 2012 lineup which once again features 4 days of music. The festival, hailed as "a model of well-paced programming...in a four-day schedule as efficient and natural feeling as an expertly built algorithm" by NPR Music while Wired notes, "leave the landscape out of it and Sasquatch! has a lineup to kill for," runs May 25-28 (Memorial Day Weekend) at The Gorge, the internationally acclaimed concert venue carved in the basalt cliffs high above the Columbia River Gorge in Quincy, WA."
The Sasquatch! Music Festival takes place, as usual, at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington over Memorial Day weekend (May 25-28). And this year's lineup is:

SnowBall

"The Snow Ball Music Festival [in 2011] was chill, in more ways than one. Besides the expected below freezing temperatures Avon gets in early March, the atmosphere of the festival and attitude of the attendees were very relaxed. The tents were set up on snow instead of concrete, and so dancing the first night was no small fete as everyone was slipping on the ice. By the end of the weekend, any movement at all was unpleasant as people were standing in puddles of water, beer, and probably some bodily fluids or stuck to the ground in thick mud. The crowd left their clubbing attire at home and sported their neon ski coats instead as they drifted through the clouds of cigarette and marijuana smoke. Despite the cold weather and the impossible dance floor, most importantly, the music was good." [cause=time]
The SnowBall Music Festival, for people not afraid to watch bands playing outside in freezing temperatures ("We recommend that you come prepared for snow and winter conditions. Temperatures are expected to be in the low 40° range during the day and in the teens at night. Please dress accordingly."), is returning to Vail Valley in Avon, CO from March 2 - 4, 2012. This year's lineup includes Big Boi, Big Freedia, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. (who just announced a Bowery Ballroom show), Deer Tick, Gauntlet Hair, Major Lazer, TV on the Radio, Thundercat, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and others (listed below)

Early bird and holiday special passes are sold out but regular passes and tickets for the festival are on sale now. Don't forget your "Warm Jackets, hats, gloves, and snow boots."

Current lineup below...

That lineup just got even better with additions including TV on the Radio, Special Disco Version featuring James Murphy and Pat Mahoney, St. Vincent, SBTRKT, Flying Lotus, YACHT, John Maus, Araabmuzik Baths, Zomby, Active Child and more. It was also announced that Brian Eno, part of the initial lineup, will be presenting Brian Eno's 77 Million Paintings and "Illustrated Talks" as part of this year's fest.

The initial announcement also included Suicide, Tangerine Dream, Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Austra, M83, Little Dragon, Passion Pit, Toro y Moi, Moby (full band), The Flaming Lips, Battles, CANT, Brandt Brauer Frick (who will be on a US tour that hits Glasslands), and more.

The album comes out September 13 on Chris' own Terrible Records. He's also got an upcoming tour surrounding Moogfest which includes a show on October 25 at Bowery Ballroom. Speaking of SBTRKT and Little Dragon, Drumma Boy remixed the SBTRKT song with Little Dragon's Yukimi Nagano on lead vocals. Shabazz Palaces is also featured on the remix (compare that to Drake's version). Grab the track above via Gorilla vs Bear. Shabazz wrote on Facebook today, "Besides the release of Black Up, I don't think I've seen one article on here create such a surge of activity as this Wildfire Remix has. Amazing."

Moogfest is one of the stops on SBTRKT's recently announced US tour that also hits Bowery Ballroom on October 31 (with Araabmuzik) and Music Hall of Williamsburg on November 1. Tickets for both shows are still on sale.

Little Dragon plays a BV-presented Record Release show at Music Hall of WIlliamsburg TONIGHT (8/16). The show is sold out, but if you don't have tickets you can catch them in NYC again on their headlining tour which hits Terminal 5 on October 14. Tickets are still on sale.

Lollapalooza last year (more by Josh Darr)
Lollaplaooza

Lollapalooza celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with some huge names on its just-announced lineup. See it in full below.

The festival has obviously changed over the years. What started out as a farewell tour for Jane's Addiction with a 'touring festival' lineup that included the Rollins Band, Nine Inch Nails, Butthole Surfers, and Souxsie & The Banshees, has turned into a one-weekend Chicago festival that Lady Gaga co-headlined last year. As leaked a while ago, Foo Fighters, Muse and Eminem all play this year, as will Coldplay, Cee Lo Green, and My Morning Jacket along with the reunited Cars and the continuing-to-be-reunited Big Audio Dynamite and Death From Above 1979, and a bunch of other bands which may or may not be worth the ticket price depending on how you feel about the headliners and generally seeing bands in big, hot, outdoor crowded parks (Lollapalooza happens in Chicago's Grant Park from August 5th - 7th).

Full 2011 Lineup and a couple of videos (one from 1991, one from 2010), below...

Bonnaroo

Bonnaroo (June 9-12 in Manchester Tennessee) has announced the 2011 lineup (slightly early), and like the rumored Lollapalooza lineup, Eminem is among the headliners. Bonnaroo also has Grammy winners Arcade Fire and the Black Keys, in addition to Lil Wayne, Mumford & Sons, the Strokes, The Decemberists, Florence & the Machine, Girl Talk, Beirut (haven't seen them in a while), and many more. Full list below...

Lollapalooza

"The 2010 Lollapalooza line-up is official: Soundgarden, Green Day, Lady Gaga, Arcade Fire, The Strokes, and Phoenix will headline, joined by Social Distortion, MGMT, Jimmy Cliff, Hot Chip, and The Black Keys. With 130 bands on this year's bill, its sure to be a weekend long feast for the ears.

It's a monumental year for Lollapalooza, filled with homecomings, reunions, and first-times. Soundgarden, 1992 and 1996 Lollapalooza alumni, return to the Lollapalooza stage for their first performance since 1997. Green Day will rock Grant Park sixteen years after their first Lollapalooza appearance. While Lady Gaga will headline the festival only three short years after playing the BMI stage at Lollapalooza 2007.

Arcade Fire returns to Grant Park, having played the reincarnated Lollapalooza in 2005. This is the first Lollapalooza for The Strokes - and also their first show in four years. And making their Lollapalooza debut: Phoenix." - Lollapalooza
After extremely accurate early leaks and then much teasing, Lollapalooza oficially announces this year's lineup. Check it out below...
