Post-American Girl, written by and starring Washburn, draws from her 17-year relationship with China and addresses themes of expanding identity, cultural relativism, pilgrimage, today's shifting world order, the universal appeal of music and opening the heart big enough to fold it all in. The piece explores how a contemporary young American woman brings her conflicted feelings and simultaneous love of a changing China together with similar conflicted feelings and love of her own country's culture. The production will include Chinese Theatre Works' Kuang Yu Fong (founder and Master Vocalist); Stephen Kaplin (Puppeteer & Set Design); composer, violinist and violist Jeremy Kittel; Chinese percussion master Tian Gang; cellist Tristan Clarridge and Guzheng master Wang Jungling. Post-Amerian Girl will be directed by Meiyin Wang, Associate Artistic Producer of The Public's Under The Radar.

"I started going back and forth between China and America in 1996 and have hoped for a chance to dive headlong into a fuller expression of this journey and the lessons learned," said Washburn. "My artistry is expanding inexplicably because of New York Voices. Joe's Pub and The Public have created an opportunity to expand my artistic vision by freeing me up to think unabashedly about ways to merge my musical and personal journey with theatrical performance."

Abigail Washburn's first theatrical production, Post-American Girl, makes its debut at Joe's Pub this week for a three-night run (March 28 - 30). Tickets are still available for Thursday's debut (3/28) but Friday and Saturday are sold out.

Abigail has a number of tour dates, including a few with Bela Fleck, and all are listed below.

The day when a bill Jeff Mangum on it selling out instantly might be gone, but take note that tickets just went on sale for the 11/15 "People's Bailout, a variety show and telethon to benefit the 99%". Note: as strange as it may seem now, the LPR show is not a hurricane-related benefit (though Occupy Wall Street is on the case). The Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk & Anders Osborne show at Highline Ballroom on 11/5 is one though. Amy Helm, Eric Krasno (Soulive/Lettuce), Luther Dickinson (N. Miss Allstars), Bela Fleck and Questlove and more are on the bill so far. Tickets are on sale.

Questlove's DJ set at Brooklyn Bowl last night was also a benefit for the Red Cross. Bear in Heaven and Small Black are DJing a Sandy benefit at Glasslands tonight (11/2).

The now-annual Blue Note Jazz Festival will sprinkle over 50 shows at venues across the city during its twenty day reign (June 10th - 30th).

"This year's performances go beyond jazz to include everything from flamenco, soul, and Latin to tap, blues and R&B, all with the common thread of improvisation. Mazes...

"When you think Manchester, England you may think Stone Roses and The Smiths, but in the case of Mazes, it's more Sebadoh and Soul Asylum. Not unlike Yuck, this trio owe lots to '90s indie rock as can be heard on their debut album A Thousand Heys which came out in April." [Bill]

Bonnaroo

Two New York men who got arrested here Friday never made it to Bonnaroo. That's because law officers allegedly found they were carrying over a pound of cocaine, 1,000 ecstasy pills, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.

Alberto R. Almonte, 40, and Joseph Cruz, 29, both of the Bronx, N.Y., are charged with possession of drugs for sale and possession of drug paraphernalia. Almonte is also charged with speeding.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, it was around 2 p.m. Friday when Trooper Matilda Mahaney clocked a 2006 Chevrolet Impala doing 83 in a 55 mile-per-hour zone on Highway 111 in Putnam County.

The trooper stopped the car "and discovered that the two occupants were enroute to Bonnaroo in Manchester," says a news release from the THP. [Herald Citizen]

Bonnaroo happened this weekend. Pictures of Karen Elson from Day One are HERE, with the rest of Day one HERE. Pictures of Decemberists from Day Two HERE. Days 3 & 4 & stuff coming soon. The rest of Day Two below....

Beast @ CMJ 2009 (more by Chris La Putt)
Beast

Lady Gaga was nominated five times. Considering her rocket to fame over the last year, many were expecting more for her. But at least the contests are going to be really interesting: Beyoncé, [Taylor] Swift and Lady Gaga are going head to head in three of the most important categories: album, record and song of the year. Will one of them sweep, or will the lady vote be split?

One of the usual complaints about the Grammys is that it over-rewards older, established, familiar acts at the expense of newer, fresher ones. MGMT, the Brooklyn synth-rock duo, was nominated for best new artist, a big coup although not unexpected. But some of the shoulda-been names that have been circulated and Tweeted: Grizzly Bear, another acclaimed Brooklyn group; Regina Spektor, a young New York songwriter who started in the underground and has found some mainstream popularity; Diane Birch, a young soul-style singer, just the revivalist type the Grammys usually adore; and the Decemberists, an alt-folk-rock band from Portland, Ore., that released an ambitious concept album this year. [NY Times]

Neko Case, Imogen Heap, Phoenix, Silversun Pickups, David Byrne, Wilco, Death Cab for Cutie, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs are some of the other familiar names in the list of Grammy nominees this year. As Ben Sisario in the NY Times alludes, the nominations are a complete joke and predictable... but fun to look at anyway. Nobody expects Animal Collective to get picked, despite their soon-to-be status of being one of the highly rated artists of the year (and decade maybe).

One surprise (for me anyway) came this year in the video category. Montreal's Beast were nominated for "Mr. Hurricane". That video with a list of some of the other nominees, below...

Bela Fleck throws down his heart...
Throw Down your heart

Béla Fleck will continue exploring African music this summer on two separate, celebrated tours: the ³always adventurous² (USA Today) banjo master will join Oumou Sangare and her band, and revive his acclaimed duo run with Toumani Diabate. Pete Seeger @ Columbia in April...
Pete Seeger Celebrates Earth Day at Columbia's Teachers College

"Clearwater conducts innovative environmental programs, advocacy and celebrations in order to inspire and energize the next generation of environmental leaders.

Clearwater was founded in 1969 by music legend and environmental activist Pete Seeger." [Clearwater]

Pete Seeger's been busy lately, especially for someone who just celebrated his 90th birthday. The event for that occasion took place at Madison Square Garden on May 3rd, and is reviewed in full below, with pictures. A few weeks before that, on Earth Day (April 18th), Pete played a show at Columbia's Teachers College. Photos from that show are below too. Right after that he headed to New Orleans to perform at Jazz Fest. Prior to those, Seeger played the Clearwater benefit with Jeff Tweedy at Beacon High School on March 28th. We also recently noticed his name as the special guest on a show at Joe's Pub.

This summer Pete Seeger is scheduled to play the Newport Folk Festival (August 1st and 2nd), and will perform at his own Clearwater Festival, taking place in Croton-on-the-Hudson, NY this weekend (June 20th and 21st). The Clearwater Fest lineup includes Dr. Dog, A.C. Newman, Elvis Perkins in Dearland, Richie Havens, Old Crow Medicine Show, Alejandro Escovedo, Arlo Guthrie and others. Its full schedule is below. Tickets are still sale at the gate.

UPDATE: we can confirm that Pete played his scheduled Saturday morning Clearwater Fest performance "with kids" for those who braved the rain. Pete will perform again at the festival on Sunday afternoon with his grandson Tao Rodriguez-Seeger.

A review of Pete Seeger's 90th Birthday Celebration at MSG, and all above-mentioned photos, with the full Clearwater Festival lineup & schedule, below...

Toumani Diabaté @ Stuyvesant High (more)
Toumani Diabaté

Over the last decade, Diabaté and his Symmetric Orchestra have performed almost every Friday night at Bamako's Hogon club. They have become one of the most popular bands in the city's vast music scene, celebrated across West Africa and beyond. Like the title [of 2006 album Boulevard de l'Indépendance] -- taken from the main road that bisects Bamako -- the group's name refers to a balance between tradition and progress: music preserved from the Mandé Empire that once connected West Africa and contemporary dance-music styles. The Symmetric Orchestra comprises players from Senegal, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, and Mali, and its instrumentation includes electric guitar, bass, and drums, as well as the more traditional kora [Diabaté's instrument of choice], ngoni, and balafon.

Fifty-fourth in a hereditary line of master musicians and griots, Toumani Diabaté is at once revered as the guardian of an ancient musical tradition and as a bold, boundary-crossing experimentalist. He has earned acclaim for inventive solo records as well as collaborations with Björk, Blur's Damon Albarn, Dee Dee Bridgewater, American bluesman Taj Mahal, and jazz trombonist Roswell Rudd, among others. Diabaté won a Grammy in 2006 for his collaboration with the late Ali Farka Touré, In the Heart of the Moon.

Toumani Diabaté is on tour across North America through May. Right now, he's traveling with Béla Fleck's The Africa Project (a tour that stops by the NYC-area Tarrytown Music Hall on 3/29 - tickets are on sale). Diabaté then joins the Symmetric Orchestra for more dates that include NYC's (Le) Poisson Rouge on Saturday, April 18th (tickets) and Sunday, April 19th (tickets). Pianist Jenny Lin and Burkina Electric, respectively, open.
