Stephen Colbert made his debut as host of CBS' The Late Show on Tuesday night (9/8) with guests George Clooney and Republican presidential hopeful Jeb Bush. The end of the show featured a performance by house band Jon Batiste and Stay Hungry, covering Sly & the Family Stone's "Everyday People" with a whole bunch of special guests, including Mavis Staples, Ben Folds, Buddy Guy, Beirut's Zach Condon, Kyle Resnick, and Ben Lanz, Alabama Shakes' Brittany Howard and lots more. Watch that below (via Vulture) and the whole episode is streaming over at CBS.
Ben in the studio with yMusic (via)
For his new album, Ben Folds has collaborated with NYC classical sextet yMusic which he wrote about, enthusiastically, on Facebook:
I don't recall ever being quite so excited about an album I'm making. I'll let you decide if that's a good thing or not. It's just that we don't often get to make a record that we've never heard before. I LOVE my band on this record - NYC's almost classical sextet, yMusic. Love 'em musically and personally. They are pushing me. Collectively and individually they've been on quite a few great recordings (Sufjan Stevens, Bjork, Dirty Projectors, Bon Iver, Blake Mills and lots of other stuff) since most of the group graduated Julliard nearly a decade ago. Then there's their new cellist, Gabe who just got out of Curtis, which is a maximum security music conservatory - hardcore shit. He'll cut a bitch over a parallel 5th.The record features nine songs plus a concerto for piano and orchestra. No title nor release date has been set -- Ben says "we can easily get this record out by September" -- but you can watch a bowling-themed teaser video below.
We tracked this album in 12 days total, with a lot of time spent, me, Rob Moose and CJ Camarieri, sometimes in New York, LA or Nashville, arranging. The playing, the recording, happened quickly.
On this record, yMusic are the rock band, straight up - not ornamentation. We call the ornamentation, "and strings" which is beautiful of course, just not what we are doing. The odd instrumentation is yielding something that I can't wait to release. It's a pop record, if that's what you call what I write.
You'll be able to hear them collaborate before the fall, as Ben and yMusic will be touring this spring. The full tour hasn't been announced but it includes three NYC shows: Bowery Ballroom on April 27, then Music Hall of Williamsburg on April 28, and Town Hall on April 30. Tickets for the NYC shows go on sale Friday (2/27) at noon with an AmEx presale for Bowery and MHOW beginning Wednesday (2/25) at noon.

Jack White at Bonnaroo 2014 (photo by Brian Mansfield)
As always, legacy acts enjoyed a good showing at the festival. Elton John played the entire first side of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, gave a tribute to the late Casey Kasem, and brought out Ben Folds for a guest spot. Ben had also appeared a day earlier with The Flaming Lips during their set to cover Usher's "Love In This Club" (video below), a set which included Wayne Coyne playfully throwing some shade at Kanye's set from earlier in the festival, asking the crowd "Where's the press?"
Lionel Richie played a set that included everything from his time in the Commodores ("Brick House") to "All Night Long" to his Diana Ross collaboration "Endless Love." More legends graced the Bonnaroo stages when Chaka Khan made a surprise appearance during the Derek Trucks-led SuperJam on Friday and covered Led Zeppelin and Stevie Wonder. Also in that jam were blues legend Taj Mahal, Anthony Hamilton and once again, Ben Folds. Led Zeppelin member John Paul Jones himself appeared at the festival to sit in with bluesman Seasick Steve, which he has done before with Jack White.
Jack White, who we also just caught at Governors Ball, didn't play with John Paul Jones this time, but he did play his own set which included a cover of Zeppelin's "The Lemon Song." It also included calling Rolling Stone a "tabloid," ranting about Johnny Depp and Albert Einstein (watch out Kanye!), and otherwise him rocking out to cuts from his solo albums, Raconteurs, White Stripes, The Dead Weather, and a cover of Dick Dale's "Misirlou." Video and setlist from Jack's set, below.
Damon Albarn w/ De La Soul at Bonnaroo 2014 (photo by 97X)
Skrillex led a SuperJam too which involved Janelle Monáe, A$AP Ferg, Warpaint, Doors guitarist Robby Krieger, Mystikal, Damian Marley, and Thundercat, among others. The set was closed by none other than Ms. Lauryn Hill, who played "Killing Me Softly" a la Fugees, Bob Marley's "Jamming" (though not with Damian) and more. More old school big guns came out during Damon Albarn's set, which was split between Gorillaz, Blur, The Good the Bad & the Queen and solo material. De La Soul joined him for "Feel Good Inc." and Del The Funkee Homosapien for "Clint Eastwood", Setlist and videos are below, and check out pictures and more from his recent Irving Plaza show.
Elsewhere, Omar Souleyman, who couldn't make it to Northside Festival experienced no travel issues and played a set on Thursday night. James Blake also played and told Billboard while he was there that his new album is halfway done and will include collaborations with Kanye West, Justin Vernon and more. Arctic Monkeys, who were covered twice during the festival (by Sam Smith and MS MR), played their own set too and to a HUGE crowd, heavy on the AM stuff but with a little bit of their other four albums mixed in. What didn't happen, unfortunately, was the set by Broad City's stars that were supposed to perform in the Comedy Theatre but canceled their set.
Of course the huge festival had tons of other highlights too. Did you go? What were yours?
Videos and a few setlists from the fest, below...

The gray skies grew darker Sunday in Chicago when a man allegedly punched a horse as the Lollapalooza music festival drew to a close.Lollapalooza took place in Chicago last weekend (Aug 7-9).
Pablo Fernandez, a 21-year-old Mexican national, is accused of approaching a Chicago police horse at around 9 p.m as the three-day festival was winding down, and when he was told by the mounted officer that he could not pet the working animal, Fernandez became angered and allegedly punched the equine.
The assault caused the horse to rear back in a panic while in the middle of the concert-goers, police spokeswoman Gabrielle Lesniak told the Chicago Tribune. Fernandez was charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct.
Police News Affairs Officer Kevin Kilmer told the Chicago Sun-Times that he couldn't confirm that the violence was Lolla-related, but it did take place as the festival was wrapping up and police were trying to get crowds to disperse from Grant Park. Approximately 75,000 people a day attended the festival, which was headlined by acts like Jane's Addiction, Depeche Mode and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Kilmer had no word on the status of the horse. [LA Times]
Depeche Mode were one of the headliners on the first day (Friday). Since then they had to cancel a few shows. Crystal Castles also played that day. From there that band went on to just barely played at HARD Fest in LA. Thievery Corporation were also one of the many bands on that day's bill. They have since announced a Halloween show in NYC at Terminal 5. Tickets for that are on sale.

"Though promoters around the country report strong early ticket sales for festivals and summer tours, the recession is causing jitters. This year Coachella, which has the most glamorous reputation of all American festivals, began selling tickets on layaway, and 18 percent of its customers took that option, Mr. Tollett said. With all the leaks of bands playing Lollapalooza this year, there are almost no surprises in the official lineup announcement, except maybe the Animal Collective DJ set... The whole thing below...
The proliferation of big festivals, like Bonnaroo near Nashville and Lollapalooza in Chicago, has not been without casualties. This year Langerado in Miami shut down, citing the economy. The Pemberton Festival in British Columbia is on hiatus after only one year, although its promoter, Live Nation, said the problem was permit delays." [NY Times]

hi guys...well i know i'm gonna regret this, but i can't help myself. I just heard Ben Folds, who many of you prolly have never heard of because you don't waste your time listening to shitty mid nineties m.o.r. lite grunge, calling my friend Charles Spearins' BEAUTIFUL new record "bad spa music" on the CBC. BEN FOLDS! insulting CHARLES SPEARIN! is he fuckin' nuts? you come to our country and insult a national treasure on the radio? CHARLIE SPEARIN????? the most beautiful talented soulful brother in the whole world? a guy who has written some of the most influential, sublime music this side of heaven? WHo has just completed the Happiness Project, one of the most original and uplifting pieces of music i have EVER HEARD? Ben Folds, ladies and gentleman, is an ASSHOLE for dismissing this extraordinary tribute to life and love as "bad spa music". It makes me wanna......well you know.....kick his scrawny, washed up hipster doofus ass....but instead, i encourage you all to write to his myspace (he could use the visits) and imbed charles' music in your message so that every time some refugee from the nineties wants to hear their favourite ben folds ditty, they get charlie instead. i've said it before, and it feels right, so i'll say it again;UPDATE: Torq claims he didn't write this!
BEN FOLDS IS AN ASSHOLE.
let the games begin!!!
xo love and hate torq@stars
