Eddie Vedder & The Pharmacists - Aug 21, 2009 in Toronto
Eddie Vedder and the Pharmacists

Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, who just got back from playing some West Coast dates, have scheduled a few new East Coast ones for December. One of those is December 6th at Bowery Ballroom in NYC and tickets just went on AmEx Presale. All currently known dates below.

The West Coast dates were supposed to happen right after Ted left Toronto. In Toronto Ted was scheduled to play in a charity soccer game and (again) open for Pearl Jam. Other celebrities playing the soccer game included Rivers Cuomo and Michael Cera. They actually played, but Ted never made it...

"Ted Leo, famed indie rock musician, was also originally scheduled to be at this event, but apparently he got stopped at border security and couldn't make it (or, in addition, open for Pearl Jam the night before!). Also, Rivers Cuomo was there with his Japanese wife and 2-year-old Japanese daughter!! Exciting, eh?" [Until we Eat Again]
Ted never made it to the Pearl Jam show either, so instead his band The Pharmacists played without him (and, much to the delight of the crowd, with Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready). A Little bit more about that, their setlist, videos from the show, and all Ted Leo dates, below....

Pete Seeger @ Columbia in April...
Pete Seeger Celebrates Earth Day at Columbia's Teachers College

"Clearwater conducts innovative environmental programs, advocacy and celebrations in order to inspire and energize the next generation of environmental leaders.

Clearwater was founded in 1969 by music legend and environmental activist Pete Seeger." [Clearwater]

Pete Seeger's been busy lately, especially for someone who just celebrated his 90th birthday. The event for that occasion took place at Madison Square Garden on May 3rd, and is reviewed in full below, with pictures. A few weeks before that, on Earth Day (April 18th), Pete played a show at Columbia's Teachers College. Photos from that show are below too. Right after that he headed to New Orleans to perform at Jazz Fest. Prior to those, Seeger played the Clearwater benefit with Jeff Tweedy at Beacon High School on March 28th. We also recently noticed his name as the special guest on a show at Joe's Pub.

This summer Pete Seeger is scheduled to play the Newport Folk Festival (August 1st and 2nd), and will perform at his own Clearwater Festival, taking place in Croton-on-the-Hudson, NY this weekend (June 20th and 21st). The Clearwater Fest lineup includes Dr. Dog, A.C. Newman, Elvis Perkins in Dearland, Richie Havens, Old Crow Medicine Show, Alejandro Escovedo, Arlo Guthrie and others. Its full schedule is below. Tickets are still sale at the gate.

UPDATE: we can confirm that Pete played his scheduled Saturday morning Clearwater Fest performance "with kids" for those who braved the rain. Pete will perform again at the festival on Sunday afternoon with his grandson Tao Rodriguez-Seeger.

A review of Pete Seeger's 90th Birthday Celebration at MSG, and all above-mentioned photos, with the full Clearwater Festival lineup & schedule, below...

"The 2009 Austin City Limits Music Festival will showcase a diverse blend of acts both fresh and familiar at the eighth edition of the event in Zilker Park October 2-4. Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, and Beastie Boys are performing for the first time at the Festival, with Kings of Leon, Ben Harper and Relentless7, and Thievery Corporation returning to Zilker Park once again. John Legend, The Dead Weather, and The Levon Helm Band will also make their ACL Festival debut, while Austin's own Ghostland Observatory will no doubt deliver another memorable set for festival goers.

With over 130 artists on this year's bill, the list of acts awes at each note with the likes of Sonic Youth, Mos Def, Toadies, Flogging Molly, The B-52s, Lily Allen, Citizen Cope, Arctic Monkeys, The Decemberists, Coheed and Cambria, Andrew Bird, Girl Talk, and many more.

In the tradition of the TV show from which it was born, the Festival has always aimed to offer musical discovery for the fans. The 2009 lineup is rich with pop, country, folk, bluegrass, blues, reggae, indie rock, hip-hop, and gospel, to name a few, spanning cultures and countries from New Orleans to Venezuela to France."
The entire 2009 lineup is below...

Lollapalooza

"Though promoters around the country report strong early ticket sales for festivals and summer tours, the recession is causing jitters. This year Coachella, which has the most glamorous reputation of all American festivals, began selling tickets on layaway, and 18 percent of its customers took that option, Mr. Tollett said.

The proliferation of big festivals, like Bonnaroo near Nashville and Lollapalooza in Chicago, has not been without casualties. This year Langerado in Miami shut down, citing the economy. The Pemberton Festival in British Columbia is on hiatus after only one year, although its promoter, Live Nation, said the problem was permit delays." [NY Times]

With all the leaks of bands playing Lollapalooza this year, there are almost no surprises in the official lineup announcement, except maybe the Animal Collective DJ set... The whole thing below...

Paul McCartney and Ringo

Half a Beatles reunion, or some approximation of it, took place Saturday night at "Change Begins Within," a benefit concert at Radio City Music Hall for the David Lynch Foundation. Paul McCartney was headlining; Ringo Starr was also on the bill, and yes, after letting the anticipation build, the two surviving Beatles did perform together, as they did in 2002 for a memorial after the death of George Harrison...

...As the concert's entire lineup-including Donovan, Sheryl Crow, Eddie Vedder, Moby, Bettye LaVette, Ben Harper and Mike Love (from the Beach Boys)-filled the stage, Mr. Starr took his place at the second drum kit. And Mr. McCartney unveiled a song that could surprise even Beatles fanatics: "Cosmically Conscious," an excerpt of which appeared as a hidden track on his 1993 album "Off the Ground." [NY Times]

Eddie Vedder and Ben Harper played "Under Pressure", there were lots of serious Beatles fans there, Howard Stern was there... That and more in the videos from the event below...

Flower Travellin' Band @ Smokin' Music, Austin, TX - March 19, 2009
SXSW

"There was a certain amount of tension before Flower Travellin' Band's set at Smokin' Music. Would people show up for this 30+ year old Japanese psychedelic rock band? Would they be playing to like 30 people, many of whom were there for the free smokes from American Spirit? Would the band be any good? The band's heyday was in the 1970s, when they produced some of the most visionary psych rock around. But that was then and this is 2009 and these guys must be in their 60s at this point. Could they pull it off and would anyone care?

Yes. And yes." [Austin 360]

Flower Travellin' Band also played two shows in NYC before they got to Austin to play SXSW on Thursday. More of Jacob's pictures from that day below...
