Beach House / Vampire Weekend / crowdsurfer
"I think it's dark and it looks like rain." One out of two, Bob. If ever an Osheaga headliner would thrive under stormy skies, it's the Cure, but the downpour forecast earlier in the week never arrived. Just as well -- this was Robert Smith at his most crowd-pleasing.While Lollapalooza was going down in Chicago over the weekend, Montreal was getting its own three-day festival, Osheaga. The fest had many of the same artists at Lollapalooza, with day 1 giving us sets from The Cure, Beach House, Vampire Weekend, Alt-J, DIIV and more, in addition to sets from artists who didn't play Lollapalooza, like The Gaslight Anthem, Ellie Goulding, and more. Pictures of day 1 are in this post.
The set list was calibrated for a festival audience: a generous delegation from Disintegration, early appearances by In Between Days and Just Like Heaven, and an overall tone that didn't leave much room for crying jags. The chirpy Mint Car and Doing the Unstuck ("let's get happy") bracketed the beloved-by-some Friday I'm in Love, comically botched by Smith after he said: "Sometimes, very occasionally, we'll play this song. This is the right night." [Montreal Gazette]
Like with Lollapalooza (and other upcoming shows), Death Grips were scheduled to play the fest but cancelled.
Update: Day 2 pics are up now. More day 1 pictures below...

Willy Mason at Rockwood Music Hall - 2/7/13
Rootsy singer/songwriter Willy Mason, who Radiohead once handpicked to open for them, stopped by Rockwood Music Hall last Thursday (2/7) for a show with Leif Vollebekk. Unfortunately, we missed Leif's set, but pictures of Willy's set are in this post.
The show was one of a couple hometown performances for Willy Mason before he heads over to the UK in March to continue supporting his 2012 album, Carry On. His other NYC show happens tonight (2/11) at Terminal 5 as an opening set for Ben Howard's sold-out show at the venue.
Willy Mason will also be a part of Mumford & Sons' Gentlemen of the Road travelling summer festival (which doesn't stop near NYC.) More pics from Rockwood and a list of all dates below...
Alt-J at Mercury Lounge in May (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
Big day for award nominations. The Oscars announced theirs this morning and the Brit Awards just wrapped up their ceremony for 2013 nominations, with Emeli Sandé grabbing four and Mumford & Sons and Alt-J each getting three. All three of those artists were nominated for British Album of the Year, a list that also included Paloma Faith and Plan B. If you don't know, The Brits are basically the UK's equivalent of the Grammys, though nominees are all British apart from a few "International" awards.
Jessie Ware, Muse, and Adele each got two nominations, and single-digit noms went to Bat for Lashes, The xx, Richard Hawley and The Vaccines.
The entire 2013 Brit Awards nominees list is below.

The shortlist for the 2012 Mercury Prize, an award voted on by a panel of music industry professionals and journalists honoring UK albums of the year, was just announced:
The Maccabees - Given to the WildOdds seem pretty good for Alt-J (who play Bowery Ballroom tonight), who have not only made a great album with An Awesome Wave, but also the kind of album the Mercury Prize voters like. (I am rooting for Django Django.) Last year's winner was Let England Shake by PJ Harvey.
Jessie Ware - Devotion
Alt-J - An Awesome Wave
Richard Hawley - Standing at the Sky's Edge
Michael Kiwanuka - Home Again
Lianne La Havas - Is Your Love Big Enough

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah/Feist
Before the release of their 2011 album, "Hysterical," Clap Your Hands Say Yeah had been inactive for three years, but they were as lively as ever on Monday afternoon. Blowing through tracks from all three of their albums, Alec Ounsworth and company charged through a set full of guitar-based indie rock that catered heavily towards their fans. But judging by the crowd's response, even those who were unfamiliar with the band were enticed. After playing Sasquatch! 2006 on a much smaller stage, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's triumphant set had the crowd, well, clapping their hands and saying "yeah!"Gorge, WA festival Sasquatch wrapped up on May 27 with sets from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Feist, Beck, Spiritualized, SBTRKT, Shabazz Palaces, Ted Leo, Cass McCombs, Damien Jurado, Cloud Cult and more.
Mogwai (who have upcoming shows with Balam Acab) were supposed to play that day but they cancelled last minute and were replaced by Deer Tick who came on to play a set of covers.

Hot Water Music
Chuck Ragan (of Hot Water Music) is taking The Revival Tour 2012 across the US and Canada this March and April. Like past Revival Tours, the shows feature a number of singers (usually of the punk scene) and their acoustic instruments collaborating on stage in a traditional folk music fashion. This year's tour hits NYC on March 30 at Bowery Ballroom, and in addition to Chuck Ragan, features Dan Andriano (of Alkaline Trio), Tommy Gabel (of Against Me!), and Lucero-associate Cory Branan. Tickets go on sale Saturday (2/4) at noon. The Revival tour also has ticket bundle options available with tour samplers, vinyls, posters, and more.
Nathaniel Rateliff, who released his debut album back in 2010, is on a number of the dates too, but unfortunately will not play at the Bowery Ballroom show. However, he will play in NYC one day before that show as part of the Communion-presented "Austin to Boston" tour, which kicks off at this year's SXSW in Austin. That tour hits Mercury Lounge on March 29 and also includes Ben Howard, The Staves, and Bear's Den. Tickets are on sale now.
Chuck Ragan's band Hot Water Music, who have been reunited since 2008, have announced that they're working on their first new album since the reunion and since 2004's The New What Next. They've been recording the album with Bill Stevenson (Descendents) and it should see the light of day this May on Rise Records, the label they signed to over the summer. Hot Water Music released the single "The Fire, The Steel, The Tread," b/w "Up to Nothing" in September of 2011. There's no word of whether or not these songs will appear on the new album, but you can stream them both below.
Hot Water Music have a few shows scheduled in 2012 including Bamboozle in Asbury Park, NJ and SXSW. Single day passes for 5/19 when HWM plays Bamboozle, along with The Promise Ring, A$AP Rocky, Action Bronson, and others, are on sale now. HWM doesn't have many other shows announced at the moment but maybe they'll schedule a NYC show when they're in the area for Bamboozle like The Promise Ring did.
All dates, streams, and tour fliers below...
"Following last year's 10th anniversary, which crushed previous attendance records and set a new mark for the speed with which tickets sold out, the Sasquatch! Music Festival unveils its 2012 lineup which once again features 4 days of music. The festival, hailed as "a model of well-paced programming...in a four-day schedule as efficient and natural feeling as an expertly built algorithm" by NPR Music while Wired notes, "leave the landscape out of it and Sasquatch! has a lineup to kill for," runs May 25-28 (Memorial Day Weekend) at The Gorge, the internationally acclaimed concert venue carved in the basalt cliffs high above the Columbia River Gorge in Quincy, WA."The Sasquatch! Music Festival takes place, as usual, at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington over Memorial Day weekend (May 25-28). And this year's lineup is:
