"Death from Above 1979 tonight. I've been waiting for this since high school" - Kevin

DFA 1979
DFA 1979

Death From Above 1979, reunited and gearing up for a huge tour, played an intimate one-off show in LA at The Troubadour on August 14 with Big Black Delta. We've got pics of that show in this post. It was something of a warmup for the upcoming world tour in support of their long-awaited second album, The Physical World, which is coming out ten years after their first (9/9 via Last Gang). They debuted some stuff from that record at the show too. A video of "Right On, Frankenstein" had surfaced but is now deleted, but you can watch a video of them playing the album's single, "Trainwreck 1979," below.

As we mentioned, DFA 1979's tour will be hit NYC's Terminal 5 on November 28. Tickets for that show are still available.

More pictures from the show (including one of the setlist), and that video, below...

Gary Numan @ Webster Hall - 3/22/14
Gary Numan
Gary Numan

In his second SXSW performance of the evening, the U.K. singer behind the still-totally-genius hit "Cars" leaned hard against his mic stand as he delivered futuristic songs from the Seventies and Eighties plus brooding tracks from last year's Splinter (Songs From a Broken Mind), his first album of new material in seven years. At Elysium (where the pool tables were turned into a display of the latest Moog gear), he was overcome with gloom and intense emotion, feeling every throb of his synths. [Rolling Stone]
Synth pop pioneer Gary Numan is currently on a tour that he brought to Austin for his first-ever SXSW appearances (one of which the above review is from), and then to NYC for a headlining show at Webster Hall this past Saturday (3/22). Like at SXSW, we got a good deal of his new album plus those old favorites like "Cars," "Metal" and "Are 'Friends' Electric?". The show was opened by Gary's tourmates -- M83's pals Big Black Delta and Duke Spirit side project Roman Remains. Pictures of all three artists are in this post.

More pics, along with the setlist and a video of "Cars" from the show, below...

Gary Numan

Synthpop/goth legend Gary Numan has had an active 2013 with a new album and tour, and he plans to hit the road again in 2014. He'll be taking out Big Black Delta and Roman Remains (the new project of The Duke Spirit's Liela Moss and Toby Butler) for a North American run in March and April that includes his first-ever appearance at SXSW and a NYC show happening on March 22 at Webster Hall. Tickets for that show go on sale Wednesday (12/18) at noon.

All dates are listed, along with a recent live video and a more classic video, below...

Closing Fun Fun Fun Fest, Slayer treated Austin to greatest hits and then some: "Raining Blood," "South of Heaven," "Dead Skin Mask," "Seasons in the Abyss," etc. They also dug out the aforementioned "Die by the Sword," a high point off their 1983 debut LP, Show No Mercy.

After fooling no one with a false ending of "South of Heaven," the third backdrop of the night unfurled at the back of the stage: a parody of the Heineken logo reading "Hanneman" and bearing his life dates. The top read "Angel of Death." Reign in Blood's terrifying opening track - and closing number on Auditorium Shores - now serves as an epitaph for Slayer's fallen co-founder. - [Austin Chronicle]

The eighth Fun Fun Fun Fest happened last weekend (11/8 - 11/10) at Austin's Auditorium Shores, hosting three days of music and fun (fun fun), with such acts as MIA, Deerhunter, Slayer, Television, Thee Oh Sees, Kurt Vile, Cut Copy. Johnny Marr, The Walkmen, Jurassic 5, Killer Mike and loads more. Many of them played again as part of the FFF Nites shows, including shows presented by BrooklynVegan and Invisible Oranges.

We were there in the thick of it and, as mentioned above, you can check out pics from Day 1  HERE and HERE, pics from Day 2 pics HERE and HERE; and pics from Day 3 are HERE and HERE. See you again in 2014 Austin.

Susanne Sundfor

Norwegian art pop singer Susanne Sundfor has released five full length albums since 2007, including her most recent, 2012's The Silicone Veil, which included the single, "White Foxes," which she just released as a single with remixes (including one by M83 tourmates Big Black Delta) today (6/25). You can check out the video for that track and the Big Black Delta remix below.

She's also done some notable collaborations recently, including singing on M83's "Oblivion" which appeared on M83's soundtrack to the film of the same name. She also did a collaborative single with Royksopp, "Running To The Sea," and teamed up with them again to cover Depeche Mode's "Ice Machine," the latter of which appeared on Royksopp's LateNightTales compilation. You can stream all three mentioned collaborations below.

Though Susanne's had a long-running career over in her home country, she's only done a few things in North America, like when she came over for CMJ 2010. She'll be returning this year for NYC shows on September 28 at Glasslands and September 29 at Mercury Lounge. Tickets for the Mercury show go on sale Friday (6/28) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (6/26) at noon, and tickets for the Glasslands show are on sale now.

Boston Calling

The first-ever Boston Calling Music Festival went down over the weekend (5/25-26) at Boston's City Hall Plaza. M83 at Central Park Summerstage - 8/8/12
M83

Laser light shows, clouds of fog, thrashing guitars, an orchestra, and club bangers are just a few of the things seen on stage at M83's sold out Central Park Summerstage show last night (8/8). Like Animal Collective, who achieved a similar feat back in 2009, M83 spent about a decade as one of indie rock's most consistent bands, and when the release of 2011's arena-sized Hurry Up, We're Dreaming inevitably put M83 in arena-sized venues, they were more than ready for it. Main member Anthony Gonzalez really knows how to be a frontman, fulfilling the most classic definitions of the word (he does things like yell "NEW YORK!" in between songs). The band's light show is phenomenal, blending a glossy 80s aesthetic with a keen sense of futurism. They've got lasers, floodlights, spotlights, and four light-up panels on stage which shift in color and shape throughout the show. And every member of the band looks like they're having a great time on stage for the whole set. When members switch instruments, they don't simply walk over to their new position, instead they prefer to dance their way over. When a band has that massive a presence, it's hard to ignore them.

That said, I can't promise everyone in attendance felt the same. Unfortunate to admit, but the only song that really got the crowd going wild was "Midnight City," and I definitely felt the density of people lighten after that one ended. Summerstage's sound system wasn't quite loud enough for this one and it helped make it too possible to hear all of the talking going on during songs. The only other downside was that the band's set was way too short (just an over an hour), especially for a band with six studio albums and a 70+ minute double album as their breakthrough. But all road bumps aside, this was a great show and certainly one to remember. The setlist hit all the high points of Hurry Up, We're Dreaming, including "Intro," "Reunion," "Wait," and "Steve McQueen," and dipped into their back catalog as well, reaching as far back as their 2001 debut. At this point the band have both the potential and the right to play a "hits" set, but they continue to throw in instrumental tracks, which add to the flow of the show and promise that M83 might be dipping a foot in mainstream waters, but like all great crossover bands, they're also keeping one on the land where they started.

M83 will be back in NYC when their ongoing tour brings them here for two Hammerstein shows (10/2-3) and a Wellmont show (10/4) in October. All three of those shows are with Sun Airway.

Big Black Delta opened last night's show. More pictures of both bands and M83's setlist are below.

Sun Airway
Sun Airway

M83's sold-out Central Park Summerstage show is tonight (8/8) and sure to be quite the A/V spectacle under the stars. If you didn't get tickets, the band have a number of shows this fall, including the just-announced October 4 show at Wellmont Theatre, and two at Hammerstein (10/2-3) before that.

Opener for tonight's show is Big Black Delta who is Los Angeles resident Jonathan Bates, formerly of Mellowdrone if you remember them from the mid-'00s. You can stream a track below plus his remix of M83's "Midnight City." BBD (not to be confused with BV's own BBG) will play two additional NYC shows at Pianos this month on August 9 and August 17 and tickets are still available to both. They also play Brooklyn Bowl on August 11 with St. Lucia and Capital Cities (tickets). All Big Black Delta tour dates are at the bottom of this post.

While on the subject of M83 openers, Sun Airway will be touring with the band this fall, and will be at all three NYC shows in October. All Sun Airway tour dates are listed at the bottom of this post. The band's new album, Soft Fall, is out October 2 (the same date as the first Hammerstein show) via Dead Oceans. You can stream the album's first single, "Close," below. The band just released a new mixtape featuring Boards of Canada, Bowie, Dirty Projectors, The Chemical Brothers and more. You can check out the track list below and stream it, or download it above (warning: it's a half-gig wav file).

Streams and lists of tour dates are below...
