Songs Cycled

The Henry Miller Memorial Library has done concerts in Big Sur, CA for years, and they're now bringing the celebration over to NYC for Big Sur Brooklyn Bridge, a weeklong festival which goes down from May 12 - 19 in Williamsburg in multiple locations. The festival ends with a concert at Music Hall of Williamsburg on May 19 with modern classical master Philip Glass and baroque pop legend Van Dyke Parks, plus special guests. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (4/26) at noon.

Other events throughout the festival include a pop-up book store at City Reliquary (right across from Knitting Factory on Metropolitan Ave); literary readings; more music like Jeffrey Lewis collaborator/Holy Modal Rounder Peter Stampfel at Spike Hill on May 15 (tickets); an evening of short film at Videology on May 17; and a UCB-presented comedy show at Knitting Factory on May 18 with Chris Gethard and others (tickets). Full schedule and more details below.

In related news, Van Dyke Parks just reissued his classic album, Song Cycle, and released a new "orchestral fantasy" album, Super Chief, on Record Store Day. He's also releasing a new album with re-imagined versions of old songs and covers, Songs Cycled, on May 6 via Bella Union. You can read Van's statement on the album at Bella Union's site. Stream his re-recording of "Hold Back Time" from his 1995 collaborative album with Brian Wilson, Orange Crate Art, below.

Real Estate at Bomb Fest 2011 (more by Eric M Townsend)
Real Estate

Congrats to Real Estate (and new live drummer Jackson Pollis), as well as offshoots Ducktails (Real Estate's Matthew Mondanile) and Alex Bleeker and the Freaks, who have all signed to Domino! The label will release the forthcoming Real Estate LP, currently in the throes of production, in October. Details are forthcoming. Meanwhile some new live shows were announced.

With the heat starting to crank up even though its only early June, there may be some reconsideration regarding show choices based on venue coolness and comfort. We already knew that The Feelies will play Maxwell's three times in early July in addition to their FREE outdoor appearance at Prospect Park with Times New Viking and Real Estate. But now comes word that Real Estate has hopped on the air-conditioning train too, by adding a show at Maxwell's on July 24th (the day after the Prospect Park show). Tickets for Real Estate are on sale, and Feelies tix are all still available too: July 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

The Maxwell's show, like most of Real Estate's July dates, will be with Dent May. They are all listed below.

Both Real Estate and Ducktails will also hit the Woodsist Festival in Big Sur on July 30th and 31st, where they'll meet up with Woods, Sic Alps (new/old drummer Ty Segall included), The Fresh & Onlys, Woods/Fresh & Onlys Big Band, and many others over the two days. Individual day tickets are still available.

Full Woodsist lineup, some videos and all dates, below...

Kurt Vile @ the Henry Miller Library
Woodsist at Big Sur

"We hot footed it down to the Henry Miller Library for the Woodsist festival. It was hidden among the trees like a secret garden and as we laid on our rugs drinking strong vodka cranberry, the place seemed to glow. We watched the bands, perused the library, went exploring and hung out at the merch table and before long the sunlight faded and the fairy lights came out. Oh and then we saw Kirsten Dunst, just hanging out in the bookstore and Joe let his cool mask slip and got all star-struck and gaspy. The day was magical but tinged with melancholy. I couldn't shake this feeling and this feeling was the end." [In Another World]
The described and pictured Big Sur Woodsist Festival happened on Saturday, June 12th at the Henry Miller Library. It was one of two west coast Woodsist events. The second was last night, June 15th, at Echoplex. NYC gets its own on June 25th at Music Hall of Williamsbug as part of the Northside Festival. Tickets are still on sale. More pictures from the Big Sur fest, below...

Ben Gibbard

Aside from getting married this week, Mr. Zooey Deschanel (aka Ben Gibbard) is keeping busy. He'll be playing a few shows this October with Jay Farrar of Son Volt in support of their new collaborative record, One Fast Move Or I'm Gone: Kerouac's Big Sur. The album, coming out Oct. 20th on F-Stop/Atlantic Records, is the soundtrack to a documentary on Kerouac's Big Sur. The songs, written specifically for the project, take their lyrics from the novel. The setlist for the four-date tour will include songs off the soundtrack and "other surprise material," and the band will conist of Farrar, Gibbard, Nick Harmer (Death Cab for Cutie), Mark Spencer (Son Volt) and Jon Wurster (Superchunk, Bob Mould, The Mountain Goats).

The NYC show is happening October 28th at Webster Hall. Tickets go on AmEx presale Wednesday, September 23rd at noon. General sale starts Sept. 25th at noon.

Jay Farrar was just in NYC Thursday (9/17) with Son Volt, who are currently on tour.

"The gig in New York was mostly a success. Although I'm confident that the sound in the house was solid, on stage it was loud and lacking in definition. Also, for some reason the lighting director decided to black out the stage in the middle of a song. Not sure what that was about.

Being that we were in NYC, we all stayed out too late and paid dearly the next day. Jay had it the worst, however, as he had to be up early to play on the radio." [Son Volt]

The trailer and more info on the film (which has guests that include Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Sam Shepard, Patti Smith and Tom Waits) and the album (with a video for its last song, "San Francisco")are below...
