Nels Cline's Stained Radiance at Winter Jazz Fest 2011 (more by Andrew Frisicano)

Winter Jazz Fest is returning to NYC in 2012 and will take place in multiple Greenwich Village venues from January 6-7 including Le Poisson Rouge, Sullivan Hall, Kenny's Castaways, Zinc Bar, and The Bitter End. Artists performing this year include Bill Laswell, DJ Spinna, John Medeski, Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog, Nels Cline Singers, Vijay Iyer Trio, Tyshawn Sorey, Mary Halvorson, Bernie Worrell, Marco Benevento, Jenny Scheinman, and many more. Two day passes and single day tickets are on sale now. There is also a kickoff show happening at Le Poisson Rouge on January 5 with Medeski / Skerik / Deitch, Red Baraat, and Marc Ribot's Young Philadelphians. You can also purchase a pass that includes a ticket for this show plus the two day festival pass (it's a little confusing, but if you click through on each LPR ticket link, you'll see the various options for each one).

Like at South Street Seaport, the River to River Fesival hosts free shows at Castle Clinton National Monument in Battery Park each year, and though more may still be announed, here is their initial 2011 lineup:

July 14: Patti Smith

For each of these shows, this applies: "TICKETS ARE REQUIRED and will be
available online or two per person at the entrance to Castle Clinton at 5pm on the day of show. Show starts at 7pm. Castle Clinton, Battery Park, State Street and Battery Place."

Observer: You've been with Lou Reed for what seems like forever. Any tips for staying together?

Laurie Anderson: Take a break from each other. We've been together for 19 years, married for two years. I think everything is about to blow away, and everyone is about to blow away, and it makes me care for them more.

Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed are no strangers to their friend and collaborator's non-profit, avant-garde, East Village club The Stone, and in February 2011 they will take their turn at being the curators. They will also play the venue right in the middle of that, on 2/15 with an opening set by Buke & Gass. Laurie also plays on 2/23 with Fred Frith. And the rest of the month isn't so bad either. John Zorn, Bill Laswell, Hal Wilner, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Eyvind Kang, Sean Lennon, Rob Burger, Marc Ribot, Rob Wasserman, and many others adorn the schedule so far (it is all listed below).

In related news, the dates that Lou/Laurie are curating The Stone overlap with a MoMA exhibit featuring Lou Reed's former manager in The Velvet Underground, Andy Warhol. The exhibition, entitled Andy Warhol: Motion Pictures, will show silent pictures that are professed to be his "most daring and experimental" film work. The show kicks off on December 19th and lasts until March 21, 2011.

And while we're on the subject of film, "And Everything Is Going Fine" is currently playing at the IFC Center. It's a tribute to Spaulding Gray directed by Steven Soderbergh. Laurie soundtracked the Spalding Gray films Swimming to Cambodia and Monster in a Box, and made a promotional appearance related to the movie this past weekend. .

Locrian will play NYC on Saturday July 10th as part of a artist Scott Treleaven's The Touching Of Hands exhibit at Light Industry in Brooklyn. The show will consist of the band playing a full set, as well as performing "Visible/Invisible" (downloadable above) as part of the artist's "Last 7 Words" video, an "affectionate and ethereal Super-8 portrait of [Genesis] Breyer P-Orridge".

...An evening of solo and collaborative projects by Scott Treleaven and Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, focusing on the shared influence of artist and mystic Brion Gysin. Gysin's close friendship with Breyer P-Orridge, and in turn her friendship with Treleaven, has over time given rise to a number of aesthetic and philosophical affinities found in the work of all three, communicated from one to the other.

Each has explored, in his or her own way, the nature of extreme mental states, ideas of eros and thanatos, and modern applications of occult thought. Permutations of the cut-up technique, invented by Gysin in the 1950s, can be found in the reordering of visual information by both Breyer P-Orridge and Treleaven. A preoccupation with the legend of the Cult of the Assassins led to Gysin collaborator William Burroughs's novel The Wild Boys, Breyer P-Orridge's collective Thee Temple Ov Psychick Youth and, later, Treleaven's The Salivation Army, his VHS classic about a mid-90s movement centered around a Wild Boys/Psychick Youth-inspired zine. All demonstrate what Treleaven calls a "pre-Web concept" of "total intimacy and privacy, unmediated by uncontainable social networks."

Genesis Breyer P-Orridge will not be in attendance that day, as s/he will be preforming as part of Thee Majesty in Torino Italy on July 10th. However, Genesis will be in attendance for a lecture on Brion Gysin on July 15th as part of a program put on by the New Museum.

Two nights earlier, July 13th, the New Museum hosts a related event - "8pm Dream Machine, A Celebration with performances by York Factory Complaint and John Zorn & Bill Laswell". Flyer for that one below with info on how you can help get a movie about Genesis and Lady Jaye funded...

Martin Bisi @ Knitting Factory

Martin Bisi played the first half-hour of his set as a suite, segueing from one part to another by frantically laying down one searing loop of guitar feedback on top of another. This time Bisi's band had lead guitar, bass, drums and a caped crusader wailing frantically on what sounded like a little Casio running through a million noisy effects, sharing the stage with a woman whose graceful miming quickly became the show's focal point. In a strange twist of fate, Bisi, like Visconti, is best known for producing great albums for famous bands (Sonic Youth, Herbie Hancock, the Dresden Dolls, ad infinitum), but ultimately it's his songwriting which is his strongest suit. This evening's numbers had a distinctly early 80s, East Village feel, sort of Nick Cave as covered by Blue Oyster Cult, ornate and haunting but also with a sense of humor that ran from cynicism to unaffected amusement. About halfway into his suite he ran through the mythology-based Sirens of the Apocalypse (title track of his excellent 2008 album), barrelling through the lyrics without a pause to take a breath. A more recent track, Drink Your Wine came off with an irresistible sarcasm, a word of warning to a lightweight; a dedication to his daughter, far from being mawkish, was a dark garage rocker evocative of the Libertines but tighter. They finally closed their set with a big riff-rock anthem that threatened to burst into flame after it had finally gone out, but it didn't. The audience wanted more but didn't get it. Larkin and Martin again share a bill this Sunday (1/24) at Mercury Lounge. Susu and Snowbaby are both also on the bill. Two nights of musick made by practicing magicians or practicing musicians whose work celebrates the magical lifestyle, as well a public performance of ceremonial magic ritual.

The lineup of the two-day fest includes Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (of Throbbing Gristle) with Thee Majesty (featuring Bryin Dall and Morrisson Edley), John Zorn and Bill Laswell, and Daniel Higgs.

Tickets for Day One (Monday, September 21st), Day Two (Tuesday September 22nd), and two-day passes are on sale.

Genesis P-Orridge will also be at the venue's Non, Prurient and Cold Cave show on August 8th. That bill includes spoken word performances by Genesis P-Orridge, Jamie Stewart, Jonathan Shaw, Kid Congo Powers, Eric Paul and Chris Leo (whose band The Van Pelt recently reunited). Tickets are on sale.

Just when you thought there couldn't be another Au Revoir Simone, Dirty on Purpose or Clap Your Hands Say Yeah side project... Radical Dads is a bass-less trio that shares two members with Uninhabitable Mansions. One of the members of both of those bands is Robbie from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Listen to Radical Dads at MySpace. See them live at Cake Shop tonight (2/19) or at the Castle in Hell in Brooklyn tomorrow (2/20). Uninhabitable Mansions play Union Hall on 2/27. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah played BAM last week.

After making her first post-Be Your Own Pet solo appearance at Music Hall of Williamsburg in January, Jemina Pearl promised she would "start playing around New York and New Jersey pretty frequently." Staying true to that promise, you can catch her and her band "Bad Attitude" at Glasslands tonight (2/19).

Martin Bisi's name tends to be preceeded with "New York super producer/musician/studio owner/legend". He is performing tonight (2/19) at Death By Audio in Brooklyn with Bill Laswell. All dates below...
