this is where the DFA anniversary is happening
grand-prospect-hall

NYCers might be familiar with the infamous commercials for the spectacular Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn, with the proprieters finishing off the commercial by yelling "WE MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE" at the top of their lungs. I've always thought that the venue -- which is truly fantastic in the textbook definition of the word -- might make an interesting space for a musical event. It has before, including being the home of the world-music oriented Golden Fest.

Apparently I was not alone. We've mentioned it, but never fully given it the attention it deserves. As part of the massive Red Bull Music Academy takeover of NYC next month, DFA Records will make their dreams come true by hosting their 12th anniversary of party at the dazzling space on May 25, featuring a veritable army of the DFA crew including DJs and live sets from James Murphy, The Rapture, Black Dice (live set), Juan Maclean, Pat Mahoney, The Crystal Ark (live set), YACHT (live set), Sh*t Robot (live set), Planningtorock (live set), Prinzhorn Dance School (live set, their US debut), Still Going, Nancy Whang, Tim Sweeney, Larry Gus, Dan Bodan and Marcus Marr. There are bound to be some surprises in store as well and seems likely to be a very memorable night.

Tickets are still available, but reportedly "dangerously close to selling out."

Tickets are also still available for the RBMA talk with James Murphy at NYU. Browse RBMA's full lineup for more amazing events.

DFA-related videos and those classic Grand Prospect Hall commercials are below.

Quintron

In addition to making music, Quintron & Miss Pussycat are filmmakers as well, their most recent work is The Mystery in Old Bathbath, which is the latest adventure for puppet pals Trixie and the Treetrunks. Here's the synopsis:

Something is wrong with the Happy Tree! For some reason, he can't send out secret messages anymore. Trixie and Marsha set off to an ancient spa town to find a cure before all his branches fall off. But this town is kind of funny and the historic Art Museum of Bathbath seems to have some secrets of it's own. And so does the drummer JJ Suede... Adventure unfolds as Trixie and Marsha try to save the Happy Tree and look at art made by thirsty people.
You can watch the trailer for The Mystery in Old Bathbath below and if you live in NYC you can go see a screening of it at Anthology Film Archives on April 18. While here, the band will also play the "Spring Fever / Smoke Lots of Weed Festival" at Secret Project Robot on -- wait for it -- April 20. That show also features K-Holes and Black Dice. The band will also be at Austin Psych Fest in April, if you're going to that, and all tour dates are listed below.

Animal Collective

As mentioned, Animal Collective are playing two nights at Terminal 5 (12/4-5) to make up for their cancelled Williamsburg Park show. The first night (12/4) is with Traxman, and no opener has been announced yet for the second night. Tickets for both shows are still available and a portion of the proceeds will go to The American Red Cross to help Hurricane Sandy relief.

Like Amanda Palmer, Animal Collective just spoke to us about their top 10 things of 2012, some of which were albums, like the one by their tourmates Micachu & The Shapes and the new Madlib-produced Georgia Anne Muldrow album, whereas other things on the list were restaurants they had memorable dinners at and British sketch comedy shows. You can check out the whole thing below.

Brooklyn Night Bazaar 2011 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Brooklyn Night Bazaar

The Brooklyn Night Bazaar, a place to do your holiday shopping, eat and listen to music all at the same time, returns to its warehouse location (45 North 5th St.) in Williamsburg this winter, and is again hosting shows like they did last year (though BrooklynVegan is not involved this year).

The holiday bazaar is open on Friday and Saturday nights from November 23 to December 22, from 6pm to midnight. A lot of the music lineups are still TBA but confirmed bands so far include The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Black Dice, Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio, Ayshay (aka Fatima Al Qadiri), CFCF, Eternal Summers, MEN, and others. Everything is free to the public (except the food and other stuff people are selling there)

The current lineups and sponsors for each day, and much more info, below...

Black Dice at MoMA PS1 in 2011 (more by Erez Avissar)
Black Dice

Brooklyn experimental bands Black Dice and Oneida will celebrate their respective 15th anniversaries with a show at Secret Project on December 1. No advance tickets for this show at the moment.

Black Dice released their most recent album, Mr. Impossible, earlier this year via Ribbon Music. They're over in Europe now wrapping up a tour. A list of all of their upcoming dates and the video for "Pigs" from Mr. Impossible are below.

Baroness at Terminal 5 in May (more by Joe McCabe)
Baroness

Earlier this week, we posted an update from Baroness showing that things were looking upwards for the band. Unfortunately though, with two members having broken vertebrae and frontman John Baizely having a broken arm and leg, it doesn't come as much of a surprise that Baroness have in fact cancelled some of their upcoming North American tour dates, including their NYC show at House of Vans and LA's FYF Fest. They will not be replaced on the House of Vans lineup, which happens on August 29 and now just includes Turbonegro, Doomriders, and Nightbirds. This is a bummer but it makes sense that the band takes the time they need to recover, and we wish them a speedy and successful recovery!

Meanwhile, FYF Fest, which Wild Flag also dropped off of, recently expanded its lineup. It now features The Faint (who just announced they'll be reissuing Danse Macabre and touring the album), Glass Candy, King Tuff, and newcomers The Orwells. Tickets for FYF Fest are still available. The updated lineup and flier are below.

FYF

FYF Fest. September 1st and 2nd, 2012
At the LA State Historic Park, Los Angeles, CA
Tickets are $77 and go on sale Friday June 22nd.
WOW.

Quicksand recently reunited at Revelation Records' 25th Anniversary on the West Coast, and I would't be surprised if they do the same at Irving Plaza in October.

American Nightmare has two shows coming up at Webster Hall.

Wooden Shjips at ATP NY 2010 (more by BBG)
Wooden Shjips

Warning! The following Wooden Shjips video is not for the faint of heart, nor is it for those who don't enjoy the spacey, psychedelics of Black Dice who is responsible for the visuals in this far-out mescaline-induced trip. "Lazy Bones" is a slice of retro-grade 70s hard rock, the focus of the band's recent LP West whose repress is currently up for preorder via Thrill Jockey. Head to the Thrill Jockey site for more snippets from West and head below for the fractals and noise of the "Lazy Bones" video, which makes its debut here.

As previously mentioned, Wooden Shjips hits Music Hall of Williamsburg on November 10th as part of a string of dates with Birds of Avalon. Tickets for MHoW are still available.

Wooden Shjips will spend their New Year's Eve in Austin (at the new Emo's East) with The Black Angels who play THREE NYC shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg in late October (Hallloween included). Tickets for all three dates (10/29, 10/30, 10/31) are still available.

WS video & dates below...

oOoOOO

Warm Up continued at MoMA PS1 on Saturday (8/13) with His Name is Alive, Black Dice, Water Borders, Clams Casino, oOoOO, Ayshay and short DJ sets from Brandon Stosuy, Jon Galkin, and Robin Carolan of Tri Angle Records (who is also DJing our Chelsea Wolfe show this Wednesday night).

oOoOO played a live set with Butterclock producing, singing, and hustling. Butterclock has been providing vocals for oOoOO for the whole US tour, which also hit Mercury Lounge two days before PS1 (8/11) with Water Borders. Check out a video of oOoOO and Butterclock doing "Hustlin'" at the Mercury Lounge show below along with more pictures from the PS1 show...

"Animal collective at prospect park =

"unbelievable set by animal collective

"Every other late comer in this crowd is a hater, but this is best Animal Collective set I've seen in 8 years. #nextlevel" - Max Burke

Animal Collective

Animal Collective, Deakin included, played Celebrate Brooklyn in Prospect Park last night (7/12) with Black Dice and Beta & Hatch (DJ). Looking over a few recent setlists could tip you off that AnCo have been filling the majority of their sets with new songs, and the Prospect Park show was no exception.

Save for "Did You See the Words," "Summertime Clothes," "Brothersport," and "Taste," every track the guys played has yet to be released. This was to the disappointment of some. Village Voice overheard a young woman say, "I thought those guys sang 'My Girls'?" and Vaughn Schoonmaker writes, "What is this song?" I heard mumbled from several fans in their late teens/early 20s. "When are they going to play [insert any one of their earlier song titles here]?" However, many others thought the set was incredible, us and the many clapping and cheering on the top of their lungs included. Yes, they should probably get over themselves and play more hits for those willing to spend $40 a ticket to see them play, but what they did play still sounded great and I guess that makes them pretty punk for not giving a shit (and consistent since it seems to be the same story after every one of their shows).

I wouldn't be surprised if the end result of these new songs is similar to the mixed reactions to Panda Bear's new songs at P4K Fest 2010, which are now on the beloved Tomboy LP. Though unlike the new Panda Bear LP, what we heard in Prospect Park last night was primarly fronted by the voice of Avey Tare.

Speaking of Animal Collective not giving a shit what people think, Black Dice opened for them again. I missed their opening set, but as tweeted, "Twitter makes you think nobody likes Black Dice but they just got huge cheers when Animal Collective thanked them before encore start." What did you think?

Beta ended up being music writer Andy Beta who also DJ'd the Animal Collective afterparty at the Bell House in 2009. More pictures from the whole colorful show and a video below...

Archers of Loaf @ Sasquach 2011 (more by Josh Darr)
ARchers of Loaf

This weekend marks the return of '90s indie legends Archers of Loaf who play Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday (6/25, sold out) and Webster Hall on Sunday (6.26, you can still get tickets). Opening both shows are Mr. Dream which is as perfect an opener as you could imagine.

I didn't care for their later records (or Eric Bachman's Crooked Fingers) but Archers of Loaf's 1993 debut, Icky Mettle, is an indie rock classic that stands tall alongside No Pocky for Kitty, Slanted & Enchanted, There's Nothing Wrong with Love and Sebadoh III. 1995's Vee Vee is pretty awesome too, and both records are getting the expanded reissue treatment from Merge Records in August. You can download "What Did You Expect?" (a 1994 7"-only release) at the top of this post.

Speaking of Mr. Dream, despite the Voice saying that the lineup was final, they added Mr. Dream today to the upcoming 4Knots Fest at South Street Seaport, and DJs and an indoor lounge too...

The Village Voice is excited to announce the addition of the 4Knots Indoor Lounge during the 4Knots Music Festival on Saturday, July 16, 2011. The lounge, located at 210 Front Street, will be open from 2PM till Midnight with free admission, 21+ only. DJ Sets will take place all day from: Yeasayer, Dan Deacon, Finger on the Pulse, PUNCHES, Brahms, and others TBD. Drink specials from Sailor Jerry and Bud Light will be available along with a PopChips photo booth, and much more.

The inaugural 4Knots Music Festival with also include live music on South Street Seaport Pier 17 from 1-8pm. The Black Angels, Titus Andronicus, Davila 666, Oberhofer, Eleanor Friedberger and Mr. Dream and are all scheduled to perform on the outdoor stage at the free, all day, all ages music festival.
---

Mazes

While we're in the '90s milleiu, Mazes are here opening for White Denim on Saturday night (6/25) at Bowery Ballroom. I'll just quote myself here:

When you think Manchester, England you may think Stone Roses and The Smiths, but in the case of Mazes, it's more Sebadoh and Soul Asylum. Not unlike Yuck, this trio owe lots to '90s indie rock as can be heard on their debut album A Thousand Heys which came out in April.

A Thousand Heys is full of catchy singalongs -- like their current single "Summer Hits" -- and well worth checking out. (Samples from the album are streaming at their label's website.) You can download a previously unreleased track, "Brunswick Stack," at the bottom of this post via a Soundcloud widget.

And if you can't make it this weekend, Mazes return for a headlining show at Glasslands on Tuesday, July 5 where they'll play with Beige, Country Mice, and The Hairs.

Art Brut
Art Brut

What else? Art Brut are on tour and played Maxwell's last night and will be at Music Hall of Williamsburg Thursday (6/23). The band's new album, Brilliant! Tragic!, finds Eddie Argos taking it down a notch and almost singing. Almost. It's really more of a whispery type thing -- not unlike Jarvis Cocker -- and for the most part I think it works pretty well. I especially like the single, "Lost Weekend," which you can download at the top of this post. More than anything, I think the music is the best Art Brut have come up with since their debut. And the band remain a lot of fun to see live. Argos is the real deal.

Sic Alps
Sic Alps

Sic Alps roll through town on Friday, playing Death By Audio with Spectre Folk and Weekends. As previously reported, founding member Matt Hartman -- who was half the band originally -- has left the group which is kind of weird Mike Donovan is carrying on with the name with Eric Baur and some kid named Ty Segall (who had briefly joined the band a couple years ago). Shouldn't they be called Sic Andes or something now?

Granted, Mike Donovan did most of the singing (and maybe wrote most of the songs) and I'm gonna bet this new version of the band is pretty awesome. Sic Alps most recent album, Napa Asylum, is another smoldering, thick stew of swamp garage. A lot of bands use the low-fi thing as a crutch, but Sic Alps have always used sludge like it's a member of the band. A new 7", perhaps the first fruits of this new line-up, is out in August.

Fulton Stall Market in 2010 (more by Chris La Putt)
Fulton Stall Market

And finally, a little shameless plugging. Sunday afternoon, June 26th, is the first of my four Sound Bites Series shows which take place at the Fullton Stall Market down at South Street Seaport. You can get your vegetables and jingle jangle indiepop all in one place. This Sunday the latter is provided by scene stalwarts My Teenage Stride. The fun (which includes me DJing before the band) starts at 2PM, and it's all free. Do come down and say hi.

This is the full Sunday show lineup:

JUNE 26: MY TEENAGE STRIDE
JULY 3: THE HAIRS
JULY 10: pow wow!
JULY 17: HOSPITALITY
July 10th is also the first of six free shows at Beekman Beer Garden which is at South Street Seaport too. The free Friday Seaport shows begin this Friday, but more about that below.

Some additional daily picks follow:

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 22

Iceage play a free show at Other Music today.

THURSDAY, JUNE 23

Black Dice's Eric Copeland, McDonalds and Regal Degal play Secret Project Robot. It's a record release party for both Copeland and McDonalds, so do check out the merch table. The Copeland record, Waco Taco Combo, is only a 500 copy pressing.

Dinosaur Jr. are at Terminal 5 performing their classic 1988 album Bug (that's the one with "Freak Scene") in its entirety. And probably some other songs as well. Many people will be going just to see Fucked Up, not to mention Off!.

Beach Fossils and Javelin play Santos Party House. It's a free show if you RSVP.

Panda Bear at Governor's Island in 2010 (more by Erez Avissar)
Panda Bear

Panda Bear is playing Music Hall of Williamsburg on July 3, a venue much smaller than last time. According to MHOW's website:

"This show will be will call only. No hard tickets will be issued. There is a 2 ticket limit per person and tickets are non-transferable. Tickets will be available online only. Not available at any outlets."
Tickets go on sale Friday (6/10) at noon. Noah's only other upcoming solo date is as part of a big fest at Hollywood Bowl on September 25th with TV on the Radio, Arctic Monkeys, Warpaint, and Smith Westerns.

In related news, Panda Bear's voice can be heard on the new Zomby album, and Animal Collective has dates coming up too including a sold out show in Prospect Park with Black Dice who also opens the Merriweather Post Pavilion (the venue) show three days earlier. Black Dice also opened for AC in Prospect Park in 2009. Zomby did not.

Check out a new video of Panda Bear's "Slow Motion" directed by Cheryl Dunn spliced with an interview and live footage of his set at Governors Island in 2010, along with more dates, below...

Panda Bear

"Panda Bear is the project of Animal Collective member Noah Lennox. Tomboy, his long-awaited fourth album as Panda Bear, and follow-up to Person Pitch, is now complete and will be released on his own label, Paw Tracks on April 19, 2011.

Over the past six months or so, Panda Bear has released a series of vinyl singles on different labels, including Domino, Paw Tracks, and Fat Cat, with the final single forthcoming on Kompakt. The Tomboy album will be a compilation of these songs, along with new ones that have not been released. Additionally, all the songs have been added to and newly mixed with help from Sonic Boom to give the album a wonderfully rich and warm sound. stay tuned for more details." [PRESS RELEASE]

It was back in September that we learned we definitely wouldn't be seeing Panda Bear's album in 2010, or maybe even anytime soon, so this is good news.

In related Animal Collective news, Animal Collective member Deakin will share a bill with Black Dice and Mirror Mirror this Saturday in Brooklyn at Secret Project Robot, a venue which is moving to a new location at the end of 2011. Meanwhile they have a full schedule at the current location. More details, more event listings (including a Knyfe Hyts residency) and this weekend's flyer below...

"Myself and the rest of the band are absolutely gutted that we won't be able to do these shows at this time," Jones said. "I know this is a disappointment to some of you who have been patiently waiting for five years to see us there and it is a feeling we share with you as a band. Again I'd like to extend my sincere and heartfelt apologies and hope to see you some time in the near future."
Black Dice played "The Schoolhouse" on Saturday night. A video from that show below...

Dent May @ BV-CMJ 2009 (more by Chris La Putt)
Dent May

A few nights earlier, I tried and failed to see Dent May at a late-night show, but I figured I'd give it another shot, so I headed over to the Cake Shop after the BrooklynVegan CMJ show at MHOW Thursday night, and was delighted to see that they were running on schedule. I thought I was tired at that point, but I've got to hand it to Dent May and his friend Bobby for their dedication to the cause. "We drove 20 hours straight to be with you. Our car got towed. We've been threw a lot of shit, and we love it," May said by way of introduction. A quick look at Bobby's zombie-like stare as he sat, waiting for the show to start, revealed just how tired he was. In addition to their lengthy sojourn to New York, it was their last show of the week and the third of the day. Luckily, their music is upbeat and undeniably catchy. When they started to play, they sprang to life, and many of the people in the audience began to dance.

Dent May doesn't have any more dates on his schedule, but he is on the lineup of the just-announced All Tomorrow's Parties curated by Animal Collective taking place May 13th-15th at at Butlins Holiday Centre in Minehead, UK. Full initial lineup announcement below...

Wolf Eyes @ McCarren Pool's last show - August 2008 (more by Lori Baily)
Wolf Eyes

Wolf Eyes, Black Dice and Growing will be playing a Wednesday, July 7th show at Secret Project Robot. Already 300+ people have confirmed on the gig's Facebook page, so getting there early is probably a good idea. Wolf Eyes and Black Dice don't appear to have any other shows scheduled at the moment.

Growing, whose only other scheduled show is ATP in the UK in December, just released a new album, Pumps, in April on Vice Records. Two tracks from that are above. VBS.TV interviewed the band about their history and live show. That's below with a flyer and more videos...
