Black Prairie

Black Prairie, aka 4/5 of The Decemberists plus singer Annalisa Tornfelt and guitarist Jon Neufeld, put out a new album, Fortune, earlier this year via Sugar Hill. The album sees them taking a brighter, more song-oriented approach with Annalisa's vocals in the forefront. You can stream it in full (via AV Club) and watch the video for single "Let It Out," below.

Black Prairie have now announced a tour in support of the new album which hits NYC on September 11 at Rockwood Music Hall. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

All dates are listed, with the video and album stream, below...

Chris Funk vs Jim James staring contest (via BrooklynVegan Instagram)
Chris Funk

The Newport Folk Festival went down in Rhode Island over the weekend with sets from Beck, Father John Misty (who also played Terminal 5), Bonnie 'Prince' Billy (who plays NYC tonight), Phosphorescent, Feist, Cold Specks, and more. Like we guessed they would, Black Prairie (aka most of the Decemberists except Colin Meloy) joined Colin during his solo set, turning part of the show into a full Decemberists gig. Check out an instagram video of Colin and Black Prairie playing "Down by the Water" at Newport Folk Fest, along with longer videos from each of their respective sets, below.

In other Newport Folk Fest news, Decemberists/Black Prairie member Chris Funk involved himself in a 25 minute staring contest with My Morning Jacket's Jim James, as you can see above. Chris Funk and Annalisa Tornfelt also sat in with Beck (who played an intimate show at Le Poisson Rouge before Newport).

Before Black Prairie return home, they'll stop in NYC tonight (7/29) to play City Winery with Michael Hurley.

Videos and more tour dates below..

The Decemberists in Austin in 2011 (more by Tim Griffin)
Decemberists

It's been a while since we've heard from The Decemberists, but the band's members are still finding ways to keep busy. Their side project, Black Prairie, whose lineup now includes four of the five Decemberists members (Chris Funk, Nate Query, Jenny Conlee, and John Moen -- aka everyone except Colin Meloy), released a new album this year which is a "soundtrack" for New York Times magazine writer Jon Mooallem's book, Wild Ones. You can stream that album in its entirety below, and read what Jon Mooallem had to say about it at Slate.

Black Prairie are also going on a tour which includes previously discussed stops at Bonnaroo and Newport Folk Festival. The tour hits NYC for a show with Michael Hurley at City Winery on July 29, the day after they play Newport Folk Festival. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Colin Meloy plays Newport Folk Fest too, so if he and his bandmates don't team up for at least one Decemberists song, that's just cruel and unusual. It's one of three solo shows Colin has scheduled (all festivals, none in NYC). All upcoming Black Prairie and Colin Meloy dates are listed below.

Finally, as mentioned, John Moen is releasing a new solo album, Revise Your Maps, on June 25 via Jealous Butcher Records. We already posted the song "Ramble Scramble" from that album, and John just released the album's title track, which you can stream below (via Billboard).

Speaking of the Rough Trade-signed, Lumineers-like Houndmouth, you have two chances to catch them in NYC this week before they become as big as the Lumineers. They're at Mercury Lounge on Wednesday (4/10) and Rockwood Music Hall on Thursday (4/11).

Decemberists

The Decemberists have announced that their sixth full length album, The King Is Dead, will be released through Capitol Records on January 18. To accompany this announcement, they have also released the first single off the album, "Down by the Water" (which Colin Meloy played solo for KEXP during CMJ) featuring Gillian Welch singing duet vocals with Colin Meloy (Welch also just collaborated with Norah Jones on her new album). The single can be downloaded for free off of The Decemberists' website. The record will also feature guest musician Peter Buck of R.E.M., who The Decemberists have previously collaborated with in Buck's project, The Minus 5.

ABlack Prairie, a project featuring Chris Funk, Nate Query, and Jenny Conlee of the Decemberists, just played Mercury Lounge last week.

"Black Prairie is an impossible band to classify. They're billed in some circles as indie rock, but that's not quite accurate. That may be because it's the type of musical circles the members of the band normally travel in. The most well known members of Black Prairie spend most of their time in the folk rock band the Decemberists.

There are a few similarities to the Decemberists' work here and there, but anyone expecting that brand of folk rock/indie pop, should leave those expectations at the door. Black Prairie abandons any of those pop sensibilities for the most part, instead trading them in for an altogether distinct sound.

It would be a bit too simple to call them an alt-country band as they don't seem to share many of the same principles aside from sounding like a band that might interest people who have a leaning in that genre. The road they seem to travel is that of a bluegrass band."
[Washington Times]

How was the NYC show?

In somewhat related news, friend of the Decemberists and fellow Portland band Loch Lomond have announced a new album as well. "Little Me Will Start A Storm" will be released via Tender Loving Empire on 2/22/11, and can be pre-ordered on CD and vinyl now. Sample a track from the record above.

Both new album tracklists below...

Black Prairie

"[Black Prairie] was started by two members of The Decemberists: guitarist Chris Funk and bassist Nate Query. They decided to start a primarily instrumental string band as a way to present music that didn't really work with The Decemberists' sound. They asked another Decemberist, Jenny Conlee, to play accordion, and invited Portland musicians Annalisa Tornfelt and Jon Neufeld to add their talents as violinist/vocalist and guitarist, respectively.

Black Prairie's songs consist mostly of instrumentals, and their arrangements pull from bluegrass and old-time string-band traditions. But Black Prairie adds its own twist, mixing accordion and violin to mimic Eastern European sounds, while also incorporating Tornfelt's vocals on a few selections." [NPR]

Speaking of the Decemberists, Black Prairie are about to end a short tour in NYC tonight (10/29). They go on at 9pm at Mercury Lounge and tickets are still available. Check out their non-instrumental video for "Red Rocking Choir" below...
