Don Giovanni Records had yet another good year, with solid 2014 releases from Nude Beach, Priests, Peter Stampfel, Black Wine, Crow Bait, Chris Gethard and more, and they've already got big plans for 2015 with new ones from Screaming Females, California X, Downtown Boys and more on the way.
Ahead of the label's annual Brooklyn showcases, label co-founders Joe Steinhardt (also of Modern Hut) and Zach Gajewski (also of Nuclear Santa Claust), and several DG bands including Screaming Females, California X, Worriers, Crow Bait, Laura Stevenson, Brick Mower and Mal Blum have given us lists of their favorite albums of 2014. You can check out those lists below.
The 2015 showcases happen on February 6, 7 and 28 at Knitting Factory with Nude Beach, Shellshag, Crow Bait and more on night 1; Cali X, Downtown Boys, Pinkwash, Worriers and more on night 2; and Screaming Females, Priests, Tenement and Vacation at the final show. Tickets are still available.

The Menzingers in Chicago in June (more by Jeff Ryan)
The Menzingers already had two NYC-area dates on their tour schedule -- Long Island's Revolution Bar on 10/24 with Iron Chic, Spraynard, Casavettes and Lee Corey Oswald, and Taking Back Sunday's holiday show on 12/27 in NJ -- but nothing in NYC proper. That's now changed, as they've added a free show happening on November 7 at Brooklyn Night Bazaar with more TBA. Updated list of their dates, below.
That show's part of an all-punk weekend at BKNB, with their Revolution billmates Iron Chic headlining the venue the next night (11/8) with Beach Slang, Blessed State and Collect Yourself (also free).
Beach Slang also play Saint Vitus on October 14 with Cheap Girls, Lee Corey Oswald, Signals Midwest and Chumped (buy tickets or win some), and they play the official 2014 BrooklynVegan CMJ showcase happening October 25 at Baby's All Right with The Jazz June, Pity Sex, Cayetana and Sport (tickets).
Other upcoming punk shows at the Night Bazaar include the Lemuria show that we mentioned earlier today and one this Friday (10/10) with Crime In Stereo, Sorority Noise, Mannequin Pussy, Nine of Swords and Push Ups.

Northampton rockers Blessed State are now just a week away from releasing their debut album, Head Space (due 6/24 via Safety Meeting -- pre-order), but you can finally hear the whole thing in this post. The record pulls from decades of punk and post-hardcore, sounding at times like Braid, Husker Du, Paint It Black and still more. These guys definitely sound like they've got a serious record collection, but it's not just showing off a list of influences, it rocks pretty hard too. Listen to a premiere of the whole thing below.
Blessed State will celebrate Head Space with a FREE record release show in New Haven, CT on July 9 at BAR with their Northampton neighbors Potty Mouth, Holyoke, Mass. noisemakers Neoteric, and New Haven's Oughts (not to be confused with Ought).

Western Mass punks Blessed State will release their debut LP, titled Head Space, produced by Justin Pizzoferrato (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Speedy Ortiz) on June 24 via Safety Meeting (pre-order). You've already heard the title track and the band are now letting loose another cut, "Best Case Scenario," along with its video (dir. Allison Kern). The track sees the band diving into mid-'80s Husker Du-isms, and its video turns a walk through the woods into a spontaneous Blessed State show and bonfire. The video premieres in this post and can be watched below.

Los Campesinos! / Speedy Ortiz @ Irving Plaza - 1/22/14
Cardiff indie rockers Los Campesinos! are over in the US for a short tour supporting their newest LP, No Blues, which hit NYC's Irving Plaza last night (1/22). The band were characteristically enthusiastic and gave us a good mix of the old and the new. Speedy Ortiz opened, and pictures of both bands (including one of Los Campesinos' setlist, though it may not be 100% accurate) are in this post.
Speedy Ortiz have a ton of other dates coming up, and now that last night's show is in the past, they've added another in NYC. They'll be the previously-unannounced guests at the Golden Ratio/Shea Stadium/My Social List-presented Brooklyn Night Bazaar on February 7 with Krill, Odonis Odonis, Heeney, Infinity Girl and
Blessed State (update: though Blessed State are listed on BK Bazaar's site, they're not actually playing). Like all Night Bazaar shows, that one is FREE, but if you want to skip the line, you can RSVP.
Speedy will also be doing an 8 PM in-store at Other Music on February 10, the day before their Real Hair EP comes out.
Updated Speedy Ortiz dates are listed, along with more pics, below...

Tickets for the Metal Alliance tour stop at Irving Plaza with Behemoth, 1349, Goatwhore, Inquisition and others go on Live Nation/Ticketmaster/Music Geeks (password: "musicgeeks") presales today at 10 AM.

Perfect Pussy at 285 Kent in October (more by Amanda Hatfield)
One of this year's great unsigned bands, Perfect Pussy, are unsigned no longer. The Syracuse noise punk crew have announced that they've signed to Captured Tracks (DIIV, Mac DeMarco), and will release their debut full length on the label in early 2014. That LP will follow their 4-song I Have Lost All Desire For Feeling EP (streaming below), which they self-released earlier this year. Since that release, the band also offered another song, "Advance Upon the Real," to the new Accidental Guest Recordings compilation, Beyond Inversion (via Rookie Mag), which benefits Rachael's Women's Center in DC. You can stream that track below too.
Perfect Pussy have also announced an extensive, almost-two-month long tour. It begins with two previously discussed NYC shows, including tonight (12/5) at NYU's E&L Auditorium with Ceremony, White Lung, and Sleepies; and Friday (12/6) at Shea Stadium with California X, Blessed State, Yvette, and Flagland. Admission for the NYU show is free to students and $5 at the door to the general public, and tickets for the Shea show are on sale now.
Then, after touring to the west coast and back, Perfect Pussy will celebrate New Year's Eve at Baby's All Right. The rest of the lineup for the Baby's NYE party hasn't been announced yet, but considering the occasion, chances are we can expect other great bands too. Tickets for that show are not available yet, but check Ticketfly for updates.

White Lung at Fun Fun Fun Fest 2013 (more by Tim Griffin)
NYU is putting on yet another great show before this school semester ends, and this one's an all-punk lineup with powerviolence-turned-garage-punks Ceremony, Vancouver shredders White Lung, Syracuse noisemakers Perfect Pussy, and Brooklyn punk 'n' rollers Sleepies. This excellent quadruple bill is free to students and $5 at NYU Ticket Central to the general public. It takes place on December 5 at NYU's E&L Auditorium (4th floor of Kimmel Center). More info at the Facebook event. Flyer below.
Both Ceremony and White Lung have a few other dates coming up (none in NYC), all of which are listed, along with a stream of White Lung's new 7," below.
For Perfect Pussy, it's one of a few upcoming dates, including other NYC stops on November 23 at 285 Kent with Shannon and the Clams and A Rex and J Rex (tickets); and December 6 at Shea Stadium with California X, Blessed State, Flagland, and experimental art rockers Yvette, who were recently added to the bill (tickets).

Blessed State @ O'Briens Pub - 4/14/13 (photo by Dave BrushBack)
We just mentioned that Northampton, MA punks Blessed State were working on the followup to their 2012 demo, and they've since revealed more details on the release. It'll be an 8-song LP (release date TBA), and its first single, "Head Space," is out now. Their demo was filled with Replacements-y flange-guitar arpeggios, and while the fretwork is still pretty busy here, they're taking a more aggressive, overtly hardcore punk approach that's closer to Paint It Black than it is to the 'Mats. It doesn't hurt that they've got beefier production courtesy of go-to Western Mass guy Justin Pizzoferrato (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Speedy Ortiz) either. Check out the new song, along with a recent live video of another album track, "Best Case Scenario," below.
As discussed, Blessed State will be making their return to NYC for a completely stacked show on December 6 at Shea Stadium with fellow Western Mass band California X, Syracuse noise punks Perfect Pussy, and Brooklyn garage punks Flagland. Tickets for this show go on sale Monday (10/28) at noon.

Perfect Pussy at 285 Kent earlier this month (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Syracuse noise punks Perfect Pussy just returned to NYC for a couple CMJ shows, including the Pitchfork showcase at 285 Kent on Friday (10/18) and a show at The Flat two days earlier (10/16) with SISU, Total Slacker, Hunters, Tweens, and Lodro. At their show at The Flat, they played a new song, which you can watch a video of below.
Perfect Pussy must not mind the drive down here, because they've been playing NYC a lot lately, and they've already announced they'll return on December 6 at Shea Stadium. That show is an all around great lineup, also including Amherst sludge rockers California X, another solid bunch of Mass rockers Blessed State, who are working on the followup to their 2012 demo with producer Justin Pizzoferrato (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Speedy Ortiz), and Brooklyn garage punks Flagland. Tickets for that show go on sale Monday (10/28) at noon.

Blessed State (photo by Dave Brushback)
Northampton, MA punks Blessed State (whose lineup includes Brian of Iron Hand) recall the time when bands like Husker Du and The Replacements were pushing hardcore punk to its limits and coming out with something more similar to alternative rock. The guitars shift back and forth from a flanger-filled jangle to straight ahead punk n' roll, and the vocals from a bark to a half-melodic moan that just grazes the melody in his head (in a good way). And when the band break out into the occasional J Mascis-style solo, that's nothing to complain about either.
They released a four-song demo back in October of 2012, which you can stream below or download above. The cassette is available to purchase at Blessed State's bandcamp. It's a recommended listen for fans of any of the aforementioned bands or other recent torchbearers of that sound like The Men, California X, and Milk Music.
Blessed State will be playing some shows this year, including one in NYC on February 9 at 538 Johnson Ave with Ugly Parts, Working Stiff, Trash Tide, and Ylajali. More info on this show at the facebook event. Their dates also include an opening slot at the New Haven stop on Iceage and White Lung's tour together.
A list of all dates and the stream of their demo below...
